    Thanks again for this series! Just in the few weeks I have been reading the book and following along with you, I have felt so much freedom. The other day there was a batch of homemade cookies on the counter. I walked in and saw them and said to myself, “I can have cookies if I want to...but I am not hungry, so maybe later.” Prior to this, I would have eaten 3 or 4 and then been mad at myself that I blew it and would have eaten a few more since all hope was lost. This is truly A-HA for me! I did have a cookie after dinner and completely enjoyed it, felt no guilt, and was satisfied at only having one. Also, for the first time in my life I am noticing how foods make me feel and it definitely leads me to enjoying healthy options, but I also don’t have to tell myself I can never have a certain food.

    I have my Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling where I specialized in Cognitive Behavioral techniques. I say this not to boast but to agree with you how important self-talk is in making healthy choices. Our psyche is designed that as soon as we say we can't have something we do desire it more and we get into a battle in our minds as if some fight for life mechanisms have kicked in. Once we see that all foods are acceptable we free up our ability to make healthier and more beneficial choices. This is solid science based stuff you're talking about. What I find refreshing is you don't go into extremism and you recognize that not everything will work for everyone. Great video!

    thank you for making these videos. I've been on a diet for the past couple months and recently started binge eating because of all the restrictions and just couldn't take it anymore. I've been trying to practice more mindful eating and hearing this type of information is really helping me to have a better relationship with food and that relieving myself of so many restrictions makes my mind feel a lot less stressful. I hope that I can continue to practice being more free in my mind so that I don't feel so restrained and have so many cravings. I look forward to the other videos in this series. thank you!

    I don't struggle with an extreme eating disorder by any means but it really breaks my heart to see people who do and don't know how to cope with themselves which eventually leads to self-destruction. I didn't think there was a way to help so many people but this really showed me you can help people who are struggling and how not to develop a bad relationship with food yourself. Thank you so much!!! I love your context and the best of luck

    This philosophy is so interesting. I think it has a lot to do with self trust, at least for me. I've allways thought that I needed the rules to not spiral out of control, and as I practice tuning in to my body I am actually honestly susprised to find some little piece of natural instinct there. Apparently I can put more trust in my body than I have dared before, so I will definitely keep practicing.
    Also, your eye makeup is gorgeous!

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  6 лет назад +2

      It has everything to do with self trust and trusting the body. We live in a faster, bigger, better kind of world and so much of our attention is pulled outward. As we begin to tune in, we find there is a lot of wisdom within.

    I find in general with eating as with most things in life that success beget success and failure beget failure. There is a fine line between intuition and desire. One ultimately has to decide between immediate self gratification and long term goals. Nature dictates in all animals self gratification trumps long term rewards. If this were not true the planet would be a lot less populated if you know what I mean. Freewill it is a... well you know. Love your videos!

(Side Note:if your to starting eating healthy make sure it's fresh and good quality, focus your nutrition and try new foods to get nutrition else where. This is so inspiring. It really makes me feel more grounded and comfortable knowing that I CAN eat whatever I want without guilt and the rest is just trusting my instincts. The thing that was going through my head was that I’m a vegan, I would love to add that if you are vegan for example for moral and ethical reasons that is very different, because that goes beyond us forbidding the food because it’s unhealthy or we think the food itself is ‘’bad” for us, but rather the reason is something bigger than ourselves and we chose not to eat it nor do we have the desire to eat it for that reason. That’s an exception for myself because I love the taste of cheese for example, and I feel good when I eat it from a physical standpoint but not from an emotional standpoint.

    Thank you Dani, experienced what you taught past weeks in France, enjoying “forbidden delicious French Brioches”. They were not convenient to my body but I enjoyed them just for the Tour. The amazing happened at home restarting eating “normal”... I am losing weight! That word “forbidden” triggered in my mind a never happened real food satisfaction with sound limits. Vocation is over and normal food routine welcome and no more fears about “forbidden” food! Am happy, I get it!😂😂😂

      It's simple in theory but def takes practice. And it's not about tricking the mind, it's about being aware of thoughts that don't serve so you can redefine them for yourself. It's a practice for sure.

    This is a great video and a nice series! I have found with myself, and with clients, that there are some foods where restriction creates an intense longing...and then there are foods that even in moderation, create bigger and more intense cravings. There is a really great article that has helped many of my clients- asking each person to think about what areas they are a 'moderator', and what areas they are an 'abstainer'...not just with food. Thanks Dani!

    That's so true about the foods on the "forbidden" list that I don't even really enjoy. I bought some ice cream that I didn't even really like as I was eating but I kept thinking that I "wanted" it.

    Great video and info! I did the "experiment" with pasta because I love pasta with some vodka sauce and lots of parm cheese. After paying attention and answering the questions, I found that although I enjoy my pasta, my body doesn't like too much of it. When I would diet, I would cut it out because it is "bad", and then I would crave it and binge and eat way more. I found that the saying, "A little goes a long way" is true. When I paid attention to the process of eating it, I ate slower and enjoyed to first few bites. I didn't need a huge bowl and I don't need to cut it out completely. Great learning exercise! Thanks!

    Following my comment about eating when hungry, I would say that having switched to eating more healthy food (that I ENJOY) has already given me a lot of insight into how different foods affect my body. Even before then I have known for about the last 10 years that eating liquid dairy products bungs up my nose and sinuses and makes me more prone to getting bronchitis. So whilst avoiding those foods is a food rule, it is a really useful rule. However, I do not follow it slavishly and have some liquid dairy products some of the time but very much in moderation and most of the time I have soya based products instead because my body can tolerate them better. I also know that if I eat particular crisps or particular high fat foods I tend to get a big spot (or 'break out' as you say in the US) right at the front of my nose, in the middle. NOT great. So the toss up is - what do I want more - the crisps (or other things) or the spot in the middle of the front of my nose. At the same time there are a range of 'healthy food' such as legumes and onions my digestive tract just can't manage. So I stay away from them (again, a 'useful rule') and honestly that works for me.

    This is interesting and I would add to it by learning about food and understanding what it's made of and how it impacts your body not just immediately but in the long run. There are things on my "do not eat" simply because I know I will not gain any kind of benefit at all and I see it pointless to consume it. I think it helps to know ingredients and benefits.

    My main takeaway from principle 3 was that you should indulge in eating unhealthy foods like a responsible adult: in moderation, but otherwise as you like it. If you're counting calories (or macros), then you can still have the pop tart, but you'll have to account for it to yourself.
    The chapter mentions the interesting concept of _restrained eating,_ in which you associate the food with a rigid rule, and therefore you feel that the restraint has been lifted as soon as the rule is technically broken. It's better to just accept that no food is free, and no food is forbidden: if you build up calorie debt today, you'll have to pay it off tomorrow, and that's just the way it is.

  • @marionans5721
    @marionans5721 6 лет назад +2

    Hi Dani, first of all thank you for all of your videos, I absolutely love your recipes and your food for thought videos are very interesting. I've always struggled with food, I'm doing better now since a couple of years, but I'm still kind of obsessed with food that I shouldn't eat and when I do I feel guilty. But I can't help it, even if it doesn't make me feel good after (in my body and my mind) I love food so much and particularly this kind of food that I don't "allow" myself to eat usually, I eat it still pretty often. Your advices on this video are good but first I don't see how I can just erase those restrictions from my head after all those years and second if I just let myself go and eat what I want that won't be good haha! So how can we allow ourselves to eat what we want and still be reasonnable? I'll try the exercise that you gave but I know myself and I don't think it would change anything... And same question on self- acceptance, I try really hard to like myself as I am but I can't, I'm obsessed with my body and how it's not good enough for me...

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Marion... the more we restrict a food, the more we set ourselves up to overeat it... it is the restriction that starts the cycle, so without the restriction that food doesn't have the same charge, make sense?
      Eating what we want starts wit ha practice of awareness when you are eating. Really noticing, how the food tastes, the smell the texture... how it feels in your body, how much you enjoy it etc. When we are allowed to eat what we want when we want it, the food doesn't hold so much power.
      I recommend trying the exercise with an open mind, several times. Observe yourself. Be open to learning more about yourself.
      Self acceptance is a whole other conversation for sure, but it does start with knowing that you get to make the decisions around what make you acceptable. Start by voting for yourself, realize your worth beyond just your body. We live in a culture that short changes us into believing that a women worth is in her looks but we are so much more. STOP reading magazines and books or articles or commercials that sell us this lie and make a conscious effort to read about women from our history who contributed to this world regardless of what their bodies looked like.
      I'm sure the great women of history were not sitting around counting carbs...lol/
      Shift your focus. Yes, this takes work, but its work worth doing. Write lists of things you are grateful for. Write lists of things you are good at. Write lists of your strengths. Look for it and create a new story. XXOO

    Hi Dani,
    First of all, thanks for the video. Now my "forbidden foods" are probably not what you'd expect, I'm not afraid of the calories from them, I'm afraid to consume them because they worsen my acne. I'm talking about peanut butter and oils (even olive oil). Despite them being my "forbidden foods" I still consume them from time to time. My question is, how can I give myself permission to eat something that's not in line with my goal of clear skin? It's a struggle to give myself permission and take away the rule, any further tips?
    Thanks in advance :)

    Hormones drive behavior. Refined carbs and sugar is driving insulin is driving fat. Quitting addictive foods is like quitting smoking. How you choose to do that is a personal choice. But if you go long enough the cravings will stop. But if you mess with these foods it’s like bumming smokes off friends. Next thing you know your smoking again.

    • @valarya
      @valarya 6 лет назад

      Not to mention our gut bacteria changes depending on what we eat, and there have been recent studies showing that our gut bacteria is sending signals to our brain on what to crave. If you typically eat sugar, your gut bacteria craves more sugary foods and makes your brain a slave to what it wants. They've shown that if you take a few weeks to 'suffer' through changing the types of foods you eat, your gut flora changes & thus your cravings do also. Then again... there are also articles on how 'gut flora' is a crock of bull, so. LOL - you never know.

    • @machyne82
      @machyne82 6 лет назад

      valarya there is a lot of smoke but no fire yet with the gut bacteria. But endocrinology is a well advanced science. I think that obesity being a defect of the mind (personal accountability)not the body (a defect of excess fat accumulation ie regulated by insulin)has been a distraction. I fear the gut microbiom will be too 😟the simplest hypotheses should be made no more complicated than is true and sufficient. But no simpler. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are literally fattening.

      +Brianna Olivares the intention with intuitive eating is to tune into your bodies signals (instead of your brain). If a food makes you break out that may be your bodies way of communicating that this particular food doesn’t work for it.
      This is different then creating food rules in your brain. Does that make sense?
