- Banjo Tooie is one of the best collectathon games out there, but like all great collectathon games, there are some things that are not so fun to collect. And when it comes to jiggies in Banjo Tooie, without question one of, if not the most, infuriating jiggies to collect is the race against Canary Mary in Cloud Cuckooland.
In this video I talk about the infamous Canary Mary, some "strategies" on how to beat her, how her reputation precedes Banjo Tooie, and why some fans consider her race the jiggy that almost ruined Banjo Tooie.

At the start of these races I would pause the game, switch over to my Guitar Hero drum set, then start and drumroll the whole race. She didn't have a chance

Fun/stupid story about my life: as a kid I couldn't beat her. I'd mash that A button until my arm was on fire and still never got close. Later, I got into high school sports and spent a lot of time conditioning my body and strengthening my muscles, and on a later playthrough of the game I beat that gas-huffing slag. Still monumentally difficult though.
TLDR: Years of weight lifting and intense aerobic exercise allowed me to 100% Banjo-Tooie.

I trained the fast press so hard that no matter what game you played that required you to press quickly, I could no longer be defeated.
It is possible to brute force Canary Mary. There may be some slight rubber banding mechanics but if you're a button mashing monster you can get ahead of her and stay there. That being said this minigame is needlessly difficult, and shouldn't require spoons or pausing for rest to get through it.
I actually have a Save File left as is only for her; I can button mash as she was the one who made me a button drilling machine today, I owe much to her.

I know a guy who can vibrate his nose and he used that to beat Canary 💀 Out of all the ways to beat her, I think that takes the cake

The real method here is to not focus on maximum speed but to focus on consistency. If you stay at the same speed the entire race she will basically stay side by side to you. Then right at the very end you mash.

Or you can focus on maximum speed and pause the game when you start to slow down again and again and again. The game don’t punish you for pausing the game and it actually train your muscles a bit because you’re doing repetition lol. I beat it at my second try like that.
I really didn't find Canary Mary that difficult, once I knew how her AI works. The trick is to not get TOO far ahead, then pick up the pace and go all-out near the end before she responds to your speed with a boost of her own. Yeah, I'm probably above average when it comes to button mashing, but still, I think what makes the challenge so hard for most people is that they don't understand how her AI works.
I remember thinking as a kid it would be like Koopa the Quick in Mario 64 where no matter what you do, they will take the same path and end with the same time and being mad when I saw years later it was based on how fast you were going yourself lol

You still had to keep button mashing, and I don't think what you're saying actually works, you have to still be on her toes so you might as well be ahead of her as fast as you can in that case, your advice is pointless.
It's good that banjo-tooie gives you alot of leniency when it comes to what jiggies you do or don't get. I love this game but the canary mary races suck.

Everyone was so creative and I just brought a GameShark controller that auto-tapped for me.
I actually bought it because it was cheaper than a normal Nintendo controller, but boy was I happy when this abomination graced my trips to the mine and clouds
the jiggy wasnt the problem, as a kid all i missed was the cheato page.. figuring out how to "race" her was my problem! anyway, as always nice video 👌

To beat her at the end you had to let her get a head start and then click fast at the end
The trick is not to go too fast but not fall behind either over the course of the race. It’s like an endurance test at first, and then a test of speed.

Of course this Jiggy was famously a victim of the increased frame rate of the 360 version, making it _much_ harder on Xbox than it was on the N64. The only reliable way of beating her is by using the Pause Menu method you mentioned: You spam A like crazy for a few seconds then you pause, and alternating like that is a slow and grueling but sure way to victory

There was a girl in my class in primary school who somehow had an impressive ability to button mash. Anytime I was stuck at a button mashing minigame I would invite her over to do it for me.
She could beat CCL Canary Mary handily, although she did do some pausing to recover every so often during it.
When I saw the name of this video I already knew what it would be even before seeing the thumbnail. Brought back years of suppressed rage. Even to this day whenever I have to press a button fast I remember her, and the rage helps me push it even faster. Have to set the oven to 400 degrees? I can make it beep inhumanly fast - thanks to Canary Mary. And I remember her every... single... time. She should have been left in the mines.

I remember I tried a battery powered Dremel tool left a big mark on the A button!
Thank God for the brawler controller. It may have bad placement of the Z button, but it makes this challenge a hell of a lot easier especially since I don’t have my friend with the quick fingers.
The trick is you can literally pause the game at any time during the race. So you can literally press the button fast until you start to slow down, press pause take a small break, restart press as fast as you can until you start to slow down, press start again and again. I literally got it in two or three try witb this tip.
I tried so many times as a kid to get the Cloud Cuckooland jiggy. I never got it. I think I did it as an adult

You have to race her differently both times to win. For the first time, you just have to tap the button at a consistent pace once you are ahead of her. You cannot slow down. Pause if you have to. This will NOT work for the cheato race. The trick for the cheato page is press as slow as you can to stay behind her, then when coming down the downslope for the final stretch of the race for the purple island, you have to speed past her to win the race before she can rubber band. Welp, if anyone reads this, hope it helps. How I got the jiggies in one sitting

As a kid i was never able to beat Canary Mary
Luckly my big brother is a button masher monster, and without a sweat he beated her, without him i would had rage quitted
That race has a horrible, counter-intuitive design. The mine races were just "tap as fast as you can". So, you expect the next race to be the same but faster. But actually, you are NOT supposed to tap as fast as you can. At a certain point in the race, Mary will increase her speed based on how fast you were going up to that point. So if you were already tapping as fast as you could, it would be impossible to beat her. And there is NO hint either in the game or in the official strategy guide to suggest this is how it works. I did not find out until many years later on the internet.
People say that, but I mashed at like 3/4 speed and she would end the race early.
The N64 version of the races are very easily beatable if you get yourself a Brawler 64 pad which has turbo. Just enable the turbo feature on the A button, and just hold it all the way throughout, and you're golden! Too bad you can't do this on the 360 version... unless there's a knock-off 360 controller with turbo that I may not be aware of.
if you have an xbox one or gamepass you can exploit the cloud gaming feature and use a turbo pad on the XBLA version that way.
I always rubbed my fingernail against the button, and yes it would get a little warm from the friction, but it worked without any pain. Never thought about using a spoon.

I remember this challenge to be quite hard. I kept trying and trying and trying to beat the cloud race, but no matter how many times I tried, I was never able to do it. I even asked my older sister to help since she helped with the mine cart race, but not even she could win this. I eventually figured out a solution with this Mad Catz controller which I am certain is a third-party controller, but in any case, that was my ticket to finally winning these cloud races. On this controller, there is a special button that says "Turbo" when you press down on any button and press "turbo", it will make the controller continuously think that you are pressing the button multiple times just by holding it down. I've had to do this many times while racing Canary Mary. I would have to say it was lucky I even got the Mad Catz controller. I don't know how I would have eventually beaten Canary Mary without it, or if I even ever would have beaten it prior to the days of RUclips.

The secret is to rely on the rubberband effect at the start by tapping the B button at a normal pace then speeding up if necessary

Chrono Trigger's drinking game at the Millennial Fair taught me how to become a button mashing fiend. I can get through Canary Mary's level with 2 pauses. I still needed a break because that button mashing speed wears me out.

I literally moved my right thumb extremely fast horizontally constantly pressing B for those Canary prizes. I literally got a blister having done so. It hurt badly but I was just proud to have won overall at this.

Rareware would later make ANOTHER infuriating button mashing sequence with the Lightfoot Test of Strength in Starfox Adventures. Actually there's two of those strength tests in that game, but the second one is easy to an insulting degree.
I'm replaying this now, albeit on an emulator, and my god.. I don't know how I ever beat her as a kid, but I surely struggle with it now lol
I actually did get blisters...I got the idea to use my knuckles to rub against the buttons furiously. Close, but it still wasn't enough. I walked away missing some knuckle skin and a big chunk of my ego. Especially when there were enough people out there being like, "huh? That second race? I destroyed her easily and didn't even have a second thought." Made me think I was going crazy. Another feat that had me in a similar position was the jump roping in Mario Odyssey. That took me a minute
The pausing method works like a charm. It takes long, but its the easiest method for sure.
the issue with the XBLA version is that trying to mash through is actually a bad idea, due to the lack of lag, her AI becomes immediately more aggressively fast and speeds through you lmao.

I had a turbo controller when I was a kid so I didn't have many issues with her until my turbo controller broke,oops,I used it too much

I was able to beat the Glitter Gulch Mine races easily.
The Cloud Cuckooland ones are an absolute nightmare. My hand was in agony after I eventually beat her.
I know I'm probably the odd one out, but I like the canary Mary races. The Canary Mary race song from glitter gulch mine is one of my favorite songs from the game. I was so excited the first time I beat the final race.
That L.O.G. bit makes me hope that a new Banjo game doesn't sweep NaB under the rug, they could do so many jokes with him with everything there is to make fun of in gaming since 2008
That game was a dump for Bk game but could of worked a genric vechicle game.
I used a figurine to smash flat across The buttons back-and-forth, it wasn’t even mashing the buttons. It was ironing them. My technique worked so well I had to beat that part for a friend on his 64 as well.
It was basically the spoon technique
In my memory, during the rematch in Cloud Cuckooland, I remember being able to go as fast as I wanted in the second lap as long as I held back in the first one.
So if my memory isn't wrong about that, then it isn't rubberbanding, per say, so much as her basing her second lap's speed around your first lap's speed.
I tried doing this for days in the cloud land it was so frustrating as fast as i could do it still couldn't beat her..I gave up I never beat her lol

I got this game as a kid for my 11th birthday and got a strategy guide with it. The strategy guide states to put your index finger and thumb together and then smash the A button by rubbing your fingers across the button. Works best if the button is all sweaty. Your hand WILL get hot from the friction.
I did this once without pausing or special tricks, and it nearly killed me. Almost died of a heart attack from all that button mashing. I'll never do it again.

The trick was to stay behind her until you peaked the mountain by the wasps bullseye. As soon as you start descending start mashing and you should be good. Just did it first try after failing an entire day last night haha
As a kid who could occasionally get my mom to play something like Mario Party with me, I learned how she'd always win in those A button mashing minigames. Her technique was more or less rubbing the A button with the side of her thumb while grasping it with her index finger. Looks kinda like the spoon method. When I was a teen, and went back to Tooie one day randomly, I went back and tried Canary Mary in Cloud Cuckooland and was surprisingly easily able to win.
I ended up taking the head off of my electric toothbrush and letting the oscillating metal piece go to town lol

I bought this in Y2K. I fancy myself a pretty good button masher and was able to get that jiggy after many attempts. However, I remember thinking how NOT FUN that was!
I actually had the strategy guide, and it's recommendation was putting the tip of your index finger and thumb together, and rubbing back and forth using the nails, a sort of proto spoon technique
I thought beaver bother from DK64 was the hardest thing until I did Canary Mary
I button mashed like a madman trying to beat her. But not one of my fingers was fast enough for the job…
So I used two.
Two is always better than one
Just beat both races, 23 years later. They're not easy for sure but I did learn some things.
The 1st race is a straight up button masher, no rubber-banding involved, at least I never noticed it. The beginning is the most challenging part as she starts off very fast but if you button mash fast enough you can catch her and her speed will come down to a more manageable level. At that point you can pause to rest a bit then continue. I was able to maintain a sizable lead for pretty much the entire race once I caught up to her.
The 2nd race is the one that gets people the most because it's less about button mashing and more about understanding the mechanics of the race. She actually starts off much slower than the 1st race and 99% of the race is pretty tame, probably easier than the GGM races. It's that last tiny bit near the end that gets you and where the rubber-banding really rears its head. I had a massive lead all the way up until the big descent down the mountain toward the goal. Then out of nowhere, about midway, she absolutely torches me with god-tier speed. After several more attempts, I figured it out. You need to rubber-band the AI back. As you're coming down the final descent, slow down, let her take a reasonable lead. The key is to leave enough of a gap where you can build up to top speed before passing her. What gets people is they stay near or next to her and try to button mash to the end but fail because she speeds up way too fast. You have to time it to where you pass her very near the final turn and be at max speed, she won't be able to speed up fast enough for that last bit (the very last camera shift).
Beat her at her own (programmed) game!
All you have to do is pause the game until you are refreshed, then unpause and mash. Repeat.
That spoon bit really did me in.
Banjo Tooie was one of my favorite games as a kid. This was the only jiggy I never got. I simply accepted it was too impossibly hard. I might dig out the cartridge and try the spoon trick.
I had to bandage my hand as a kid because i made a hole in the skin of my palm playing that raft mini game in mario party one where jungle shy guys poke you if your raft gets to close to the shore
I've alternated using both index fingers, I think I had that work as a kid.
The Canary mary scared the absolute fuck out of me as a kid
I never made it that far into Banjo Tooie. I just made it to the zomibed Jiggy king. But I can predict myself that it’ll be a pain in the Jinjo
This race was so hard I actually thought you had to do an extra step to make it fair, like getting a can of oil to make the rat racer easier to control or a “drink” to give to Mary to make her sluggish.
But no, it’s just that hard and the sole reason why I never 100% Banjo Tooie
I mainly only like old games, but button mashing minigames are one of those retro video game things I'm glad gaming has moved past.

This was the only time a video game has ever physically harmed me IRL, since I would be mashing like a fucking maniac for the whole race. Every time I lost, I needed like 10 minutes to recover before trying again
My sister was button mashing like a monster and managed to get the last jiggy.
I just always used my thumb just how you would use the spoon. Learned that from the first three mario party games
I can brute-force Canary Mary, but it hurts like a bitch. At the very least, I'll often need to pause and rest my hand.
Was not aware this was an infamous challenge. Recently played through this game for the first time and beat all of the mashing things first try. I struggled more with the archaic FPS controls on the 64 controller!
My first playthrough was 89/90...eventually went back years later and 100%
Trying to do this on an emulator was one of the worst gaming experiences I've had, had to download something to actually beat it.
It took me 20 YEARS to get that Jiggy and Cheato page.

@@pressaTD I think it does yeah - it’s proof of how Tooie made all objectives way too complex whilst decreasing the total amount of Jiggies from 100 to 90. They should’ve increased the jiggies too and made easy, medium and hard ones
@@pressaTD I mean, even the game itself says so - after they get the jiggy, Kazooie mentions that one jiggy doesn’t seem enough for all the work they did for the Triceratops
I beat both of these on the first try, but I thought it was because I'm in my 30's, not because I'm playing the N64 copy I found in Little Tokyo.
So sad growing up i had every single thing in tooie like 99.9% completed and i never got that one single jiggy from that damn bird so i never 100%ed the game :(😢
This challenge is a blemish on Banjo-Tooie, which is otherwise an all-around excellent game. I use turbo every time I play this challenge and I don't even feel bad; if the game doesn't bother to play by any rules, why should I?
Yeah it's all about figuring out the rubber banding. Which ain't easy for kids ! But honestly as long as you stay a bit behind until like 3/4 of the race then start mashing for real, you're golden.

One of my old friends was a button-mashing expert and got the jiggy back for me on the N64's release. But the cheato page was never got, and replaying this game I can get neither thing. Maybe one day I'll understand how to destroy that frickin canary. Seriously, were the Cloud Cuckooland races even tested, or just plain evil?

I put my hand under my T shirt and then I slide back and forth over the button. Also I pause the game when i need a break but it is truly exhausting 😭
Honestly, with the updated versions on Xbox series X and S, you can button mash the A button ALOT faster than usual, although your hand hurts like crazy afterwards.
After getting all cheato maps you get the ability to auto regenerate your health

I played it as a kid back in the N64 era. I button mashed. I failed. Over and over… but I’ll tell you, I learned a true and honest way to button mash faster. Someone mentioned her AI… I didn’t know about it either. I just mash with my arm instead. It’s fun. No one can beat me on most mini games (Pokemon stadium 1/2 for instance) until I show them how I do it… then some people can even beat me. 😂 I’m glad I didn’t have the internet so I could learn the skill I have today.

The constant pausing strategy was what I used. It was painful but not difficult.

As annoying as the last Canary Mary race is, I honestly struggled more with the Saucer of Peril. I never beat that thing as a kid. Then again, I probably only beat the Canary races because I knew about the rubber banding lol
On top of all that, Canary Mary's design just creeps me out. It's like she's the result of some freak genetic experiment to fuse a human woman with a bird. I cannot fathom why Rare thought any of this was a good idea.
