Sirena Beach (and definitely Sunshine in general) wasn't that bad. I agree, felt frustration when I first played it in 2002 looking for that pineapple, especially in a time where things like gamefaqs did indeed exist but internet access was nowhere near as easy to come by as today (was wifi even a thing at that point??) But that was part of the charm of gaming back then - getting stuck was a thing that would happen sometimes. If you were at a friend's house with no computer or on vacation somewhere with your family, you would either have to accept defeat and put the game down, or if you had nothing else to do/ no other games to switch to, really buckle down and try to figure shit out. Which meant meticulously talking to all the NPC's and trying to work out which dialogue was flavor text and which could be cryptic hints, combing all the nooks and crannies of the map looking for small visual indicators, etc. Especially for that mission in particular (wasn't it called "the mystery of the missing pineapple" or something?) the struggle felt immersive, really made you seem like an investigator questioning everybody and searching the entire hotel, lol. Not saying it's bad that games today are generally much easier, but that is something which is much rarer to come by, I mean the feeling of finally getting past a part you were stuck at for the longest time. Because at that point (remember, RUclips was far off from being a thing) that meant unlocking the rest of the game, and feeling like "oh nice, I get to finally see what else this game has to offer!"
Call it bad game design, but stuff like that had it's own charm.

As someone who has recently finished playing this game, I give Super Mario Sunshine a solid 6/10
    GOOD:
    - Has an interesting premise and setting
    - Beautifully designed locations
    - Essentially plays like an updated version of Super Mario 64, with its similar control scheme
    - FLUDD (especially the Rocket one) is fun to use, even if it's a bit gimmicky
    BAD:
    - No long jumping
    - Controls can be annoying when trying to be precise
    - Most levels are frustratingly difficult at several points, to the point where getting Shine Sprites doesn't feel satisfying because you'll be anticipating something worse in the next level. This along with the point below ruined the game for me.
    - The game often doesn't provide enough clearance on what you're supposed to do, which lead to more than a few times when I consulted RUclips to help me out.
    - Camera often clips through walls, making it annoying when you're navigating through certain areas or trying to wall-jump
    - The climax felt rushed, and the ending was pretty meh

All you gotta do is lay into the giant Manta at the start with Jumping Shotgun Water Blasts (where Mario sprays heavy blasts of water right in front of him), and then when it splits into all the tiny ones, just spam the Sprinkler Spray (where Mario spins like a top and sprays water in all directions). If it seems like you're about to be backed into a corner or trapped by the Mantas, just jump and Hover Nozzle to safety. Alternatively, you could avoid the Manta at start while it's gigantic, slow and easy to avoid, and clear away some of the electric goop to create a more stable fighting area before engaging the manta. And in the event you somehow run low on water, you can withdraw to the beach and refill. In the event the Manta knock Mario around too much, you can hit up the tiki bars in the middle of the map, grab those coins and get some HP back. All told, the battle shouldn't be so hard that Mario will have his HP depleted or run out of water before the Manta is defeated.

There are two main things that stop me from coming back to Sunshine, particularly in regards to 100%ing it again or even playing around on a 100% file"
1: No freedom. Sunshine brought a lack of freedom with it's mission mode. With Mario 64, you could go into any of the worlds and barring only a couple of selected stars, you could complete virtually any mission at ay point in any order. It was often fun to go into an area and see how many missions you could complete without collecting any stars. Sunshine heavily restricts this.
2: Blue coins. In Mario 64, collecting 8 red coins was sometimes irritating, and in some courses getting 100 coins was annoying, but the coins were not hidden from you and they were often clustered, so if you found one you found them all. Blue coins, however ,are in obscure, out of the way locations and they have no checklist for them anywhere. They also don't provide a reward right away when you get them, requiring you to trade them in batches of 10 per Shine. Woe to anyone who puts the game down for a bit then picks it back up without writing down which blue coins they have and haven't got.

Super Mario Sunshine first came out when I was in middle school and I have good memories of playing it with my cousin during summer break. I also love Isle Delfino; it feels so alive compared to most 3D Mario worlds, which are essentially floating obstacle courses and the way you can see glimpses of one area of the isle from another is the icing on the cake. I also like a more story-driven Mario game with actual more voice-acting than usual, hopefully we'll get another some day. There are missions that seriously piss me off though; Blooper Surfing, The Shell's Secret, The Watermelon Festival, Red Coins of the Pirate Ships, and the Manta Storm to name a few. The over-reliance on Fludd can be a serious problem, especially since Mario can't jump nearly as well as in SM64.

This video is funny because Serena beach is one of my favourite levels. Jumping burst fire works best for the manta ray. This is why having the manuals in games were awesome.
Also the water leak. A double jump or wall jump is actually all it takes to skip the floor. This shine was my fav because it encourages exploration to find all the hidden rooms and exits.

    • @gigatesla
      @gigatesla 2 года назад

To add on (you probably already know this, but for those who don't) - when you jump you can spam shoot+jump to go HAM with the burst fire. It's unbelievable how much water you can lay down that way. But it also uses your water up very quickly, so keep an eye on the meter and mind your positioning so you don't accidentally run dry and get cornered.

    And I love it!
My pick for my least favourite levels of this world would be stage 4 because of the tedious foreplay (yes the bonus level was good!), and that level which covered the whole level with goop in a shape of Boo... My gosh... This was already a hard world... But that one... Jeez... Nowadays I am fine but back that I had no idea about that spray cannon thing...

I played this game for the first time when 3D All-stars came out. I played through most of the first level, pushing myself. I kept thinking it was going to get good soon. It never did. As far as I can tell, this isn't even a real Mario game. It just has Mario characters in it. Other than that, it has nothing to do with Super Mario. I skipped it & played Galaxy. That game is great!

My problem with Sunshine is the story progression. To open up the final stage you have to defeat shadow mario in episode 7 of every level but there's nothing leading you to do that. I was at 80 shines or so until I accidentally triggered the event. The last story related cutscene before the final boss happens barely a quarter of the way into the game and you're left wondering how to get into the volcano because that's where flood said bowser Jt fled to. What's worse is that more than half the shines don't matter in the end because only the episode 7 shine matters for progression. Everything else is either leading up to ep 7 or wasted time. The blue coins are there just to make sure you never 100% complete the game without a guide. Some of them are so obtuse to obtain that I'm surprised even a single person found them at all and also posted it to gamefaqs.

I feel the early 2000s are some of the jankiest when it comes to videogames, which probably has to do with the generational jump between 5th and 6th gen. That jankiness either bring graphical or gameplay-wise. I also think it might be due to this generation being the first one that lets games have a better visual fidelity (aka, Mario actually looks like he does in the boxart)

In Sirena 2 that cork took me from when I was 6 to 12 years old to beat. A lot of that time was not doing it but I took me over 200+ attempts. The sand is ok not super hard. I tried it without jumping one time because it doesnt look like you can walk over the slopes and I got it. I can do it first try now because I play this game too much.

  • @JoeyDCharts
    @JoeyDCharts 2 года назад +5

manta ray is trivialized by just using the hover nozzle tbh
as for the yoshi level, finding every fruit besides pineapple at the fruit stand is a nice little joke (plus the dialogue you get if you talk to the NPC running the stand) that works to tell you that you need to go exploring for the pineapple. the secret in the bathroom stall is indicated by it being the only stall with visible leaking water on the side. what one person sees as obscurity, another person will see as minimizing hand holding and letting the player have the satisfaction of figuring it out on their own. to me its a strength of this shine, and its one of the most memorable in the game
that being said i agree that the grid of panels in the casino is flat out broken lol
while you skipped over the boo boss, i will say that in terms of gameplay it represents the weakest attributes of old nintendo boss design, just too much waiting for your opportunity to do damage. i suppose there is a bit of puzzle aspect to determining that the hot pepper makes the boss vulnerable, but once you figure it out, you just have to repeat that three times and the boss is over. though it does get points for being bizarre & memorable
i think over time people will start to appreciate that mario sunshine is actually one of the strongest 3d marios overall. despite its jank i just think theres way more creativity here than in galaxy. internally, sunshine was probably seen as being too carried away by its ambitions and needed to be reined in, so galaxy offers a far more polished experience. but ultimately it waters down mario's challenge a bit too much and is essentially a flashy crowd-pleaser. sunshine is due for its renaissance

  • @charliecharliewhiskey9403

Mostly good points, but complaining that something is in the manual instead of the game is silly. In that era, reading the manual was part of the gaming experience. You'd read it in the car on the way home. Or you would pick up info from gaming magazines.
And even mentioning buying digital is ridiculous, given that the game is from way before online distribution. Nobody designed things on the basis of "what if someone buys it in a format where they don't get a manual?" Because every game had a manual and it was common knowledge that mechanics, story and flavour text were in there.
Plus Nintendo was well aware that the schoolyard a place for sharing tips. One kid reads the manual and shares the tip with everyone else.
Really not a big deal. Normal for the time.
