hi im also a gx85 user. pls make a review for 7artisan 12mm and 25mm for video cuz so much much vintage to choose and with speedbooster which lot of us can't afford.
Are you still liking this? I am trying to justify buying the whole set but scared to spend the money. Ok have a bmpcc og and 4k I want something for low light and nice cinematic shots
Wow dude thank you for such a beautifully simple, but elegant video. Your voice, tone and level of detail is just spot on and I can’t believe you don’t have a million subscribers yet:) I’m considering picking one of these up, but would love to see what a real person and skin tones look like through this lens. Do you happen to have any test footage with live subjects?
Hi Spencer! Do you remember the picture profile/render settings you were using at this time? This is some of the cleanest pocket4k footage I've seen on here. Love that camera when it's shown correctly like this. Awesome stuff.
Great footage! Have you had a chance to compare this to the similar offerings from SLR Magic or Meike? It's awesome we have so many M43's options these days, but sadly I can't find any direct comparisons between these cinema primes.
I literally just binge watched a ton of your videos. i LOVE the colours you're getting and the style of your shots! Very very cinematic and beautiful 🔥subbed!
Late reply, sorry about that. Thank you so much my friend, I appreciate the love! I've been slacking big time, I hope to start putting out videos once again here soon!
Just bought a G80(85) with a Viltrox for my vintage Nikkor collection (got 7 of my dads old ones!) AND the Simmod ND filter, because of your videos - I am loving the quality of the setup (sorry for the straight up copy of your small rig, it just looked great :) )! Thanks so much for the advice - talk about bang for buck!! How does this lens perform with your GX85? I am guessing it's great. Do you have video of this?
That is so awesome man, I love to hear it haha! That's funny that you asked, I did try the lens on the GX85 and it was awesome, the lens weighs more than the camera but it felt really good, with all of the support being under the lens rather than the camera body when shooting. The lens interacts really well with the GX85 in regard to IBIS, I was able to walk around and it almost looked like I was running a glidecam lol!
That's a good question, I probably would buy into this system. I'm a huge sucker for fast lenses and their line-up is incredibly fast. I also really like the look you can get from these lenses. Meike's are nice and clean, but they lack some of the character that I personally prefer.
What do you think a similar 17mm for m43 system but with a much lower price? Does not need to go with the "T", I am fine for the F, F1.0 is even a bit overkill for me. Thank you!
Hey Spencer, I'm wondering about your thoughts on this lens vs your Nikkor 24mm f2.8, which when speedboosted, also has a 17mm FOV. I know they're made for different types of shooting, but as a cinematographer on a budget, both lenses are tempting for wide shots and low light. I guess the biggest thing I'd want to know is how they compare in the infamous "cinematic" look department. Thanks!
Hi Spencer, did you take the Simmod variable ND Filter review down? I was looking for it. Can you share what step up/down ring you are using or are you using more than one ? Can´t find any 37-77. Thank you for sharing all your experiences especially with the GX 80. Henning
Hey mate, Thanks for another great review. Although I do already have a 17mm Olympus, this is still a very tempting lens. Especially because my Olympus is quite small for filming. What are your thought on continuing to invest in m43 lenses and gear? I love my BMPCC4K and GX80, but I fear Blackmagic might not continue the BMPCC4K. What are your thoughts on this? A BMPCC4K Pro would be awesome though 😂
@@Youknowthebo I honestly think they would, the P4K was such a huge success that people would jump all over a pro version like the 6k, I feel like there would be way more sales of a 4K Pro over the 6K Pro.
I bought this lens used and just like the non cine 35mm f0.95 lens, this 17mm t1.0 lens has some wobble to the lens barrel. When I adjust focus I notice about 1mm wobble back and forth which results in not so smooth focus. Anyone seen any disassembly videos to show me how to fix this? Haha
Good question! I actually have the Rokinon Cine 24MM 1.5 and a speedbooster. The construction of the Mitakon is nicer, and I do really enjoy the glass & flare quality of the Mitakon, the Rokinon seems to be softer wide open, especially with a Speedbooster. With that said, the Rokinon is nice since it is in EF mount and it can be adapted to many systems. I do however like the native M43 mount on the Mitakon.
Would you recommend getting this lens over others (or not) for getting into manual lenses? I've found it would be useful to have a cine lens for when I need accurate focus, but I don't find myself in that position too often. Rokinon primes seem nice but I've havent had the greatest luck with sample variation with them in other lenses.
I'd say if you want to get into Manual lenses, start small. For instance, pick up a Canon FD or Nikon AIS lens, perhaps a 50mm and/or 24mm. They are much cheaper and you'll be able to get a feel for manual lenses. With that said, if you want to up you game and want a more well-suited cinema lens for production, this lens is an awesome choice!
Love the way these reviews look and feel, new sub! I have a question for you. I'm looking to move on from my Sigma Art fast zooms to cine primes and this Mitakon is on my shortlist. I've been looking at SLR Magic Cine Microprimes against the Mitakons, and the footage I've seen online of the SLR Magic lenses seems to have stronger colour saturation versus the Mitakons but that might be artistic choice in grading. Can you let us know the recording codec you used, and any colour correction applied in post? As a comment on the video structure, for the purposes of assessing a lens as a potential buyer, I would find it helpful with this sort of review to see the straight out of the camera image, followed by the graded image, to judge colour. Or perhaps you could post stills on your website for this purpose, if you didn't want to do the split screen thing in your videos?
Hey neuro thanks so much for the sub my friend! I also have to apologize for the incredibly delayed respone. I agree, I think from now on for lens reviews/tests like these I may keep the source footage "raw" for potential buyers to analyze the footage in its raw form, great suggestion. I can't say much about the SLR Magics when it comes to contrast and color saturation because I've never used them, but the grading in the video is definitely subdued in terms of contrast and color, you seeing those muted ranges is because of my grading process, not the rendering of the lens itself.
@@SpencerWhiteman No problem, no need to apologise LOL... we all have lives to live outside of RUclips! Thanks for the clarification, I was beginning to wonder because so much of the footage I've seen taken with the Mitakons seems to be less saturated, so I was confused if this was the lens! I can sympathise with you making lens reviews, though. It's a tough toss-up between making something inspiring and beautiful, and something technical for evaluation purposes... the YT algorithm would probably reward the former more than the latter, but buyers like me want both to be inspired and informed! Actually, I've decided to hold off on cinema lenses for now. Looking at the cost to change from my Sigma Art lenses (18-35 and 50-100), I can't really justify the hit on the Art lenses' value against the cost of buying the new glass. Especially when the image from the Sigmas is so lovely... I think I'd be sacrificing image quality for form factor/ease of use. And the Sigma Arts are on a speedbooster, so they're super-fast lenses allowing lower light shots - which with my GH4 is key. On balance, I decided to stick with what I have and put up with the weight... until, that is, I can afford to get the Sigma Art cine versions :-)
Great video as always. Was thinking about getting a couple of these lenses when I found my dream lens on an unbelievable sale. 14-35 f2 on micro four thirds, take my money please.
@@SpencerWhiteman it is an 4/3 lens that existed before micro four thirds lenses. Olympus 14-35 f2 zuiko lens. You can still buy it new today for $2,3000 but I got it for $600 in pristine quality and then got the adapter for $200 so now I have autofocus. It is slow but it works too
similar to slr magic (a lot of character). Very different from Meike wich are sharper (but less character and not good for low light). I have the Slr magic 25mm t0.95 hyperprime and it's an awesome lens too ! A lot of character. very similar to the zhongyi 25mm t1. The slr magic is way more smaller.
I’m sorry my friend! I’ve been meaning too. I actually have a video currently being edited, but it keeps getting pushed back with my full time job, my side hustle and my family 😭. It’s just a little video to get back in the groove of things. 👍
This is the reviews Im looking for. Just show me how the lens looks. I dont need a talking head for 20 minutes going into the specs. Give me more dude!
The lens at T1 isn't the sharpest, but it's not bad at all. Most leneses I've used that try to pull off an incredibly fast F/T stop usually are pretty soft when wide open. Once you close it down past 1.4 it gets nice and sharp.
Drop me any questions you may have!
Awesome vid again, bud! and I love that background tune - what is the name of it? :) Keep up the amazing stuff!

For the sample shots I've seen of this lens, it has an amazing focus breathing control for it's price range! Love it!
finally M43 cinema lenses that don't compromise. Equivalent to f1.8 yew. Bring it!
