Here is how I see it:
Greater will wants to implant its own order in the physical realm(Lands between)
It sends Metyr because it can’t directly interact with the world but it can with metyr, she gives birth to all two fingers and the other finger monster, she then sends info to the two fingers
But metyr is broken and does not receive info from the greater will anymore. She can still send info to the two fingers.
Metyr essentially sends an outdated message from the outer god. All guided by a false narrative

I think what Ymir was implying by saying that everything was broken from the very start is that Metyr was already broken and therefore abandoned by the Greater Will prior to the Fingers meeting Marika. Meaning the Two Fingers never spoke to the Greater Will and therefore Marika cannot claim to be doing the Greater Will's bidding. The fingers then guide that species towards civilization and eventually they pick out an Empyrean, someone they deem worthy of being able to handle the Ring and enforce order.

I think Metyr was forced to bow to the Elden Beast. The Elden Beast remembrance is the only other description which speaks of the Greater Will sending a star and I think we're meant to connect it to that. What seems plausible to me is that the Fingers, abandoned by the Greater Will, guided Marika to use the Gate of Divinity to commune with the Greater Will. This summoned the Elden Beast, which, as the Elden Beast remembrance says, became the Elden Ring, which Marika became the vessel of. Marika, whose village is next to the Finger ruins, would be motivated to do this because her people were being oppressed by the Hornsent. I think there is a lot of circumstantial evidence which supports this view.

    • @Marco1995Mega
      @Marco1995Mega 26 дней назад +44

Pretty sure the Elden Beast had been in the Lands Between for WAY longer than that. There is a depiction of it in Farum Azula, Placidusax was Elden Lord at one point, and the Elden Stars says that the Elden Beast arrived "long ago". It's been theorized that the Elden Ring has exchanged hands several times by the point Marika becomes the god of the new age, as the Greater Will did seem to demand a new host for the Elden Ring every once in a while, an Empyrean. Even the hornsent have the Empyrean Grandam, a person meant to guide empyreans.

    • @evilfungas
      @evilfungas 26 дней назад +4

@@Marco1995Mega Where is the depiction of the Elden Beast in Farum Azula? I don't think there is one. There is a depiction of the Elden Ring, but the Elden Stars description specifically says the Elden Beast *became* the Elden Ring. Why would they include this detail if we are to understand the Elden Beast was always the Elden Ring? I don't think this is a throwaway qualification, especially in light of the new Finger lore in the DLC. I think it could just as plausibly be read to suggest the Elden Ring once existed apart from the Elden Beast that incarnates the Order of the Elden Ring in Marika's Golden Order. I also think that the area we see through the Gate of Divinity in the story trailer really resembles the area we fight the Elden Beast in the base game, and that the roaring sound we hear coming from it could be reasonably taken to be the Elden Beast, who would become the Elden Ring Marika bore as the god of her new Age.
Even if you think this is not the first time the Elden Beast came to the Land's Between, it's plausible anyway that the god that "fled" the dragons was the Elden Beast, perhaps around the time of the civil war of the dragons, and that it was summoned again by Marika at the Gate of Divinity at the guidance of the Fingers, where she reforged the Elden Ring into a new Order and became a god.

Count Ymir saying that Marika and the Two Fingers were corrupt from the start also implies that Metyr was the one deciding the Empyreans during the age of the Erdtree, and she was just lying about doing the bidding of the Greater Will.

So for a few weeks I've been putting this out there but we can see the Greater Will. When you get Ymir's High Priest hat its description reads: "The hat of Count Ymir, High Priest. The circular design at the top represents the Greater Will and its lightless abyss." We understand that Metyr used the Microcosm to communicate with the Greater Will. If you look at the center of the Microcosm (you can look at the Fleeting Microcosm spell icon as well for a stable image) you can see an Abyssal Sphere at the center. It's not just an empty space, the sphere is defined. You can see it on the staff of the Great Beyond as well. The Microcosm spell seems to be like a window into space or like a "Zoom" call.
This leads me to believe the Black Moon that once hung over the Eternal Cities was likely an effigy of the Greater Will. If you look close, the Nox are ridiculously theistic. In the core game all Nox enemies have a role in their religion be they maidens (priestess) the swordstress who protect them or the male monks. If I was to go on a lore speculative walk with these thoughts I would say the pre-banished Nox attacked Metyr. Why, I'm not sure but if I were make something up I would say they felt she wasn't doing a good job or it could be a response to supporting Marika. They couldn't kill her but they wounded her, the last thing the Greater Will did in the Lands was banish the Nox underground while destroying their Black Moon effigy before being permanently cut off.
(This all feeds into my post DLC understanding of Ranni's storyline and why the Black Knives turn on her and what her ending means. But I won't sidetrack any further.)

Looking at DLC items associated to Night and Darkness starts to make clear that the concept of the Nox "Lord of Night" is completely in line with the Greater Will's Elden Agenda. It's actually why the Black Knives turn on Ranni's crew. Also a miss statement by Ziostorm: The Nox were not trying to make their own god, they were trying to make their own LORD. Ranni was going to be "their Empyrean" and the Nox were going to provide her a Lord. Taking advantage Ranni uses these scions of the eternal city to stage the Night of Black Knives. Only for the Nox to discover Ranni slew her Empyrean flesh. In doing so she was no longer an Empyrean by her own admission. (Quote from Ranni the Witch: "I WAS once an Empyrean.) Basically, the Black Knives/Nox were really screwed by this. They no longer had an Empyrean so they no longer needed a lord but worse the Black Knives had become an open enemy of the Golden Order and its surviving Demi-gods.

@@roe__jogan gotta say I disagree because of Elden Ring’s significantly recurring scenario of gods considering failure to be one of the highest forms of blasphemy. We see it with Metyr being abandoned likely after being wounded, we see it with Placidusax likely after the same, we see it in Marika’s message at one of the churches “~be whatever except a nobody because then you will be naught but a sacrifice”. Finger creepers fit into this because they are the failed attempts at creating envoys of the greater will, and so we find them in blasphemous and hidden/optional areas. It makes sense for blasphemous Rykard to harbor these failures in his lands, and for his carian royal family, who had warred with the golden order, to study them. Mountaintops of the giants is just generally a forbidden area, so it makes sense those creepy things would be put there.

Ymir being a glintstone sorcerer is an interesting fact. I'm pretty sure he is the one represented in the inverted statue Ranni gives us. His knowledge of the fingers coming from the study of the stars also means that other sorcerers could have similar knowledge. From the main game we know there's some overlap between Astrologers, Nox and Carian. So, my theory is that, the reason why the academy and the Carians were in opposition to the Erdtree, it's because they know the true origins of the two fingers and knew those were broken by the Nox when they hurted Metyr long ago. This also explains why Ranni refuses to be "controlled" by them. She knows the true, and she won't let those broken things guide her or define her new age.
Now that I mentioned Ranni, I think there's a very cool parallel between her and Miquella, in that they both had to renounce their flesh to become gods.

The lore of Metyr might also lend some insight as to the condition of the cursed empyreans.
We know that one major goal of the Fingers and Metyr is to produce empyreans so that new vassal gods of the Greater Will can be created and the Order could spread. But more empyreans and more gods at the same time mean the GW will have to send more Elden Beasts that would inhabit said empyreans.
This is where it gets interesting, the Fingers chose the empyreans and would tell Metyr that new empyreans are going to be born or are already born. Metyr would reach out to the GW in order to request for more Elden Beasts to be sent. Metyr broadcasted this message in space to the GW, but we now know GW has stopped responding, but this does not mean the message cannot be interpreted by other beings. Other Outer Gods.
Malenia, Miquella, Messmer, Melina - all of them are seemingly cursed. Metyr requested GW for Elden Beasts to be sent for these empyreans, but the message only managed to reach other Outer Gods.
Malenia cursed by the Outer God of Rot, Miquella by whichever God represents nascency, Messmer by the abyssal serpent, Melina something to do with the GEQ.
Metyr tried to expand the Golden Order but did the opposite by attracting other Outer Gods instead. This would also explain the presence of other Outer Gods in the realm of shadow - the Formless Mother and Rot God seem to have a strong presence here.

But given that Messmer is implied to be older than Radahn, and most likely already an adult by the time the golden order made contact with the Carian in order for Rellana to have any feelings for him, that only means the greater will already abandoned Metyr by the time he was born, which probably predates even Godfrey.
What is the possibility that Marika chose Godfrey because of her failure with Messmer and Melina? But at the same time, there is no mention about Messmer being an empyrean in order to support this theory.

Basically I’m saying that the fingers have only been doing what they THOUGHT the Greater Will wanted, but in reality Metyr was just winging it giving the fingers what she believed that the Greater Will would want in this situation.

I assumed Metyr’s resentment was primarily about becoming secondary and subservient to the Elden Beast and the new order. It seems likely that Marika’s ascension not only turned out poorly for the Hornsent, but also the Fingers. They expected a fresh start with a new god under their guidance, but were replaced by a new ‘falling star’. The fingers cling to power by claiming exclusive communication to the Greater Will, but in reality they’re almost completely superfluous beyond their lingering power to arbitrarily choose and manipulate Empyreans. I really like the idea about the Nox and Fingerslayer Blade as well, but it’s very difficult to place this chronologically and we’ll probably never know enough to confidently assume this.

A detail I find very interesting is that her face is a fingerprint in the same shape as the Godskin spell sign. What's the connection between Metyr and the Godskins? A related tangent: I find it interesting that there are empyreans chosen by the fingers. The purpose of an empyrean is to become a god, but why is that necessary if they already have one in Queen Marika? I suspect that Queen Marika was never meant to be an eternal deity of the Lands Between. The rise of other empyreans chosen by the fingers suggests that.
The two empyreans seeking to become gods, Miquella and Ranni, both describe their reign as a thousand year voyage, as if they know they aren't meant to rule forever. Maybe the real betrayal of Queen Marika was to try and consolidate her position for eternity. Perhaps the fingers and Queen Marika were always plotting against each other.
Also, empyreans are specifically chosen by the fingers, not the Outer Gods as some suggest. Ranni made a conscious choice to associate with the Dark Moon and Miquella seems to have no intrinsic Outer God affiliation at all (probably the GW). Only Malenia was cursed with the presence of an Outer God within her, but her situation is more similar to that of Messmer, and possibly Melina, as well as Mohg and Morgott to a lesser extent.
Another thing I find interesting is that the Elden Ring doesn't seem necessary for godhood. Ranni's ending has little to do with it iirc and there's nothing that suggests that with Miquella. He instead seems to receive a circlet, which, interestingly, boosts Golden Order incantations.

My theory is that the Greater Will never communicated anything and is just the unconscious primal force of creation in the Elden Ring-verse. Metyr was just delusionally looking for a purpose in life and Marika's thirst for revenge against the hornsent gave her a means to obtain one.
I also believe the Fingerslayer Blade was used to kill a Two Finger and that this Two Finger was subsequently possessed by the Frenzied Flame to become the Three Fingers as the Frenzied Flame is incapable of creating anything and therefore has to repurpose already existing things, like it does with Shabriri and Hyetta.

That just isn't true, we know Metyr used to receive signals from The Greater Will, keywords being "used to"
There was a time where she received direct orders from The Greater Will, but when we see her in game those orders aren't coming anymore
We're also expected by the writers to believe The Greater Will is a living being, not some abstract force, several characters believe The Greater Will is alive, the Recusant Bernahl even believes he can kill it, and the Fingerslayer Blade also reinforces the notion that The Greater Will is capable of dying
In contrast there is no lore whatsoever that even remotely suggests The Greater Will *isn't* a living creature, you can check for yourself
Everything we do know about The Greater Will suggests that it is alive and intelligent, the name alone supports this notion too, The Greater WILL, in Philosophy Will is considered one of the faculties of the Mind, you cannot have a Will if you do not have a Mind, therefore the Greater Will MUST have one
I also challenge the notion the Greater Will created the Universe to begin with, due to the very simple fact Elden Ring was created by Japanese Developers, there's a reason you ALWAYS kill Gods in JRPGs after all: ruclips.net/video/IEUqLL8J4gI/видео.html

The answer to why Metyr is broken and abandoned is in the Abyssal Woods: Divided Falls. There are five waterfalls, three grouped together, and then two a ways away. Lusat's vision of the primeval current was the last moments of a great star cluster, a sight which broke his mind and created Stars of Ruin- twelve shooting stars that pursue their target. The Three Fingers tell us through Hyetta that the Greater Will once made a mistake, and then came fractures, then births. Metyr's kowtow move spreads out FIVE rays, much like Radagon's signature move. All this to say: Metyr was sent to the Lands Between not as a two-finger entity, but five, a whole hand. The hand of god. But she collided with something in the journey, or perhaps was attacked by Astels, and by the time she landed, she was the broken, misshapen thing we see now, able only to birth Two Fingers, while all her attempts to recreate her original form come out as the Fingercreepers. She believes this is why she was abandoned by the Greater Will, and ultimately replaced with the Elden Beast, a five-fingered entity.
What really gets me though, is the implication that there's a Mother of Three Fingers yet to be found.

I think Messmer and the suggestion that he is Melina’s brother could actually tell us a bit about the identity of the gloam eyed queen. Assuming Messmer and Melina are siblings, we are told that they both were born cursed, and that curse probably manifests itself in their eyes, as both characters have an eye sealed in some way. Messmer’s eye hides the abyssal serpent, and Marika seemed to fear that enough to lock him away in the shadow realm. I think that implies that Marika had reason to fear Melina and seal her gloam coloured eye too, which explains the sealing rune covering Melina’s eye when we meet her

My theory was as you mentioned that it was the Nox that damaged her but one piece possible evidence you didn't mention is in the description of the "Ringed Finger":
Bludgeon made of an enormous finger sheathed in several heavy rings. Thought to have been cut from an ancestor of the Fingercreeper.
Some life yet remains in this legacy of an ancient act of blasphemy, as evidenced by the barely perceptible warmth it still exudes.
Metyr's rememberance does call her the "The mother of all Two Fingers and Fingercreepers" and on top of that it is called an ancient act of blasphemy, which would be a fitting way to call the trason of the Nox. If this is a finger cut off from Metyr then it would prove that she was actually attacked and considering as you mention that the fingerslayer blade is the only weapon able to damage her makes it all fit together.
One interesting note on Metyr as well is the end of the fight. I wondered to myself how it would be possible for us to even kill her but on a 2nd playthrough I realized at the end of the fight it looks like she gets sucked up into something akin to a small black hole. So it's possible she either teleports or maybe has some safety mechanism implanted by the GW when she gets into a bad situation.

Great findings/breakdown per usual, yet i think that we should be open to the option that the Greater Will was never truly in coorespondance with metyr at all, and that her "faint signals" were simply interpretations of the cosmos that she viewed. The fact that she was a daughter of the Greater Will, and sent to the lands between by it, doesn't neccesarily mean this was for an elaborate purpose. She simply could have been created by the greater will just as humans were, according to Ymir, yet she would fall upon the earth in time as a comet.
One thing i was really hoping the DLC would clear up is whether or not the GW has true intentions, or is more of a neutral observer post creation, but since it didnt we really have to accept both options when considering theories/timelines. It's possible the greater will never guided metyr at all, and she was never abandoned. She was alone from the start, and there was no comfort in her creator to be found besides her delusions.

I go further and say its possible that the Greater Will doesn't even exist any more, or has changed to another state, its original form and lost glory that the Mother of Fingers is trying to preserve through an imitation/ simulacra would only be a passing state in a natural cycle, just an attempt to preserve what is fated to be temporary according to the natural order of things. Metyr is interesting because, speaking of its design, it receives signals from its microcosm at one end, in its "tail", and at the other end it has a wart-like eye that gazes vacantly into the beyond. We know that those astronomers who tried to look into the cosmos found darkness. In short, this deviation would be the foundation for Marika's own aspirations and mistakes in trying to create a perfect and eternal era. Both unhinged from the start.

    • @romerobritto9094
      @romerobritto9094 26 дней назад +1

regarding the darkness of the cosmos, now that we have gained context about our cosmic origin initiated from a great rupture revealed by Ymir it is possible to connect with the primeval current"Fires a tremendous comet in a torrent akin to the distant starry expanse, the place said to be the origin of glintstone.
When Azur glimpsed into the primeval current, he saw darkness. He was left both bewitched and fearful of the abyss." and "When Lusat glimpsed into the primeval current, he beheld the final moments of a great star cluster, and upon seeing it, he too was broken." The use of "broken" here is interesting, Metyr may have gone through the same process and the microcosm/ simulacrum was a solution she found. (The broken and discarded are fully willing to cling to fleeting simulacra, earning them some modicum of sympathy.)

My theory is something like this: Metyr is sent to the lands between as a vassal of the greater will. Metyr creates and resides at the Gate of Divinty. Metyr bestows the Gloam Eyed Queen as her favored empyrean and the GEQ ascends to godhood.
Marika seduces Metyr and convices her to abandon the GEQ. Maliketh slays the GEQ. The nox (who are numen like Marika) assemble the fingerslayer blade from the GEQ's corpse.
Marika betrays and wounds Metyr with the fingerslayer blade, cutting her open and pulling out the elden ring from Metyr's chest (as seen in the DLC story trailer). The would is still visible on Metyr's body.
Marika ascends to godhood through the gate of divinty. Metyr hunts the nox for their and Marika's betrayal. Marika seals them undersground to protect the nox from Metyr's wrath. Metyr descends into madness.

  • @Ltonsly7400

I wonder if Metyr being cut off from the greater will has anything to do with Marika veiling the land of shadow. That this act disrupted Metyr's commuication. It could explain why Radagon was called back from Renalla to wed Marika. We know the veiling was during this time period because Rellanna is in the land of shadows in support of Marika's ideology via Mesmer. This betrayal would give the greater will a reason to want to replace Marika, and we know the offspring of one god creates Empyreans. Miquella and Malenia were both born with defects, which probably made Ranni the ideal choice for succession. Ranni then orchestrated the night of the black knives, and admist the chaos Marika shattered the Elden Ring.
I'm more inclined to believe the opening cinematic, that the greater will fully left after the shattering. Maybe Metyr was dicsconnected earlier though during veiling.

Since we know the Jars can create a meshed personality of sorts, I think it is possible that "Marika" is a successful saint of the shaman jars. That is the reason she became an Empyrean and was able to rise to godhood. Radagon can be a second "personality" created by the Jars who embodies order and honour.
Also there are mentions of Marika betraying the Hornsent. Maybe the Saint Marika was prayed to by the hornsent and she used her status as a saint to raise an army somehow and then turned on the Hornsent for revenge. The seduction could be the Finger Mother seducing Marika the Saint to betray the Hornsent in exchange for godhood and power.
Also its pretty much confirmed that Messmer is son of Radagon and MArika due to the red hair.

In addition to your theory of a lost signal, I see other 2 possibilities as to what could have transpired that led to the Greater Will's disappearence.
    1. There was an event in the depth of the cosmos that needed it's full attention. There are outter gods out there, so it is not a stretch to assume that one of them attacked the Greater Will.
    2. The Greater Will left after the very first Erdtree was destroyed. The seed Marika found seems to lay dormant in the Lands Between before she came, but if Matyr has indeed been abandoned by the time of her arrival, then it means that the tree Marika planted was not the first one. Maybe, the Greater Will was defeated by the Crucible or the Frenzied Flame and fled.
That matter aside, isn't it interesting that the two opposing factions, the Golden order and Carian royalty, are more closely interwined than it seemed before. I don't remember this questline very well but I believe there were hints that it were the stars that brought this dude to the Greater Will, or Matyr at least. Astrologists and Ranni aspire to walk the path of stars, but it was this path that led one of them to the mess that is the Greater Will. I feel like this is a big problem for future Ranni who unknowingly fell into the same pit Miquella has thrown himself into. Now that I think about it ... the Carian manor is filled with finger crawlers to the brim.
As for the sword. I think there is some merit to your theory. The betrayal of the Numen was likely them realizing how fucked up Marika's relationship with the cosmic creep has been and stabbing its proxy with a blade. And Marika's response was banishing the former and sealing the latter. Let's be grateful she didn't just go genocide mode against them as she normally doest it seems. Aaaand, that explains why Ranni was certain that the blade we brought her would help againt the Two Fingers. The Numen made it, so it's definitely good.

Lore implication no one has talked about yet to my knowledge, i made this connection myself the other day. The cathedral where you meet Ymir, where metyr is located under, is named Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Now without knowing Metyr is mother of fingers, and is a child of the greater will, the name means nothing until that revelation. One thing to note, manus is Latin for hand. In the base game, on the moonlight plateau, the cathedral where Ranni goes under ground to slay her fingers, is called Cathedral of Manus Celes. Using the same logic, I feel that implies there's an additional 'mother of fingers' like being named Celes, another child of the greater will, maybe the father of the fingers. I'd say the fingers ranni slayed, but they don't have the same appearance as metyr, but I suppose that doesn't mean anything or fromsoft didn't want to give a boss design from the dlc away that early.
