I hope your June 16th was bloomingly great. I spent part of mine reading FINNEGANS WAKE. I restarted that project a couple of months ago. As I expected, this is a two-three year project (interleaved with reading multiple source books on FW, reading DUBLINERS again, reading a full book on one story (“After the Race”), and reading a variety of lighter fiction and unrelated nonfiction). I know I can’t sell you on FW, but for me it’s really a rewarding investment. So funny, bawdy, brilliant. and infinitely heuristic. I have occasion to recommend your ULYSSES series. A great service to the public of which you can be proud. And here’s something you may find of value: there’s reason the believe that the man in the Macintosh is a spy/informant for the Castle. “After the Race” gets into all the British/Irish Mi5/Mi6 style skullduggery going on in Dublin and environs in the 19th and 20th centuries of which Joyce was quite aware when writing that story and which spilled into ULYSSES. Other characters in U and some of DUBLINERS are identified in the book I’m reading as likely informants.
I wanted to take the time to tell you how much I have enjoyed all of your lectures covering each episode. I'm rereading Ulysses (after 30 years) with a friend and it has been a great experience. And your thoughtful videos really added to the experience. Thank you very much.
