The body knows how to breathe. The tricky part is un-learning the forced, unbalanced ways we're taught to play. At the player's end of the mouthpiece, you can be exhaling as if you're letting out a big, lazy sigh, and you'll unleash holy hell out the horn.
Wow. The minor Medea chords had my jaw locked in an o the entire time, I honestly can't believe what just happened. I'm glad to see these getting more views more quickly, you know how much we appreciate you. 👏🏻
Their hornline is literally so Heavenly ugh idk know what it is about their hornline just BEAUTIFUL , one of if the best hornline in DCI , in MY opinion, so no one get butt hurt lol.
Crown always stepping it up. Excellent!! I hope Crown or Coats win Championships this year. Blue devils have been winning for years and it's nice to change it up.
I'm sorry I know I'm late. I watched them all live at finals but man is it nice to sit back and just listen to the pure quality of this horn line by themselves. Truly impressive!!
Dude, having seen them rehearse and spending a day with them at the brass camp, seeing how much they've improved, I cannot wait to see how they do in finals. Great video as always.
I hope you never stop doing these. With headphones, it sounds as close to live as I have ever heard... actually got chills watching Matt direct Medea. Thank you so much!
Thank you!! :) Glad to hear positive feedback on the level of realism! Just what I'm going for--the exact sound as I remember hearing it, no embellishments.
I tell people this all the time. In person, it's just this indescribably amazing sound that seems fake and impossible. That's why audience reactions are like they just witnessed an insane stunt or magic trick.
+HornlineFanatic I know my reaction was like that. I got to sit inside their circle last Wednesday. As soon as they hit this REALLY loud part of their warm-up, you can see everyone's face in my video light up. It gave me goosebumps!
I love the early coverage- it'll be awesome to hear their sound get better and better later on throughout the summer! Can you imagine?? It's only June and the corps sounds like this. Damn! It's gonna be a great season!!!
Dude. Your vids are absolutely breathtaking and always send chills right down my spine. PLEASE DON'T EVER STOP. lol. Thanks though for real for dat crispy audio quality.....
It's cool listening to videos of the early season in comparison to the final product. Finals was super clean but the dirt in this one is real lol. Amazing sound though
Great videos and especially awesome audio! I hate listening to poor quality audio uploads! Totally unfair to the corps ! Having heard all these corps live, your audio is like being there! Keep up the good work! Geo.
Thanks!! If I go to Indy this year I may try to make a point of catching some corps I have not caught before. Depends on the days I can go, but would love to feature Genesis.
Can you try to get some footage of the Troopers again this year. Last years video was awesome and their Fix You closer this year is amazing. Your videos are great. I try to share them as much as possible. The closest to the real thing that I've heard.
Wish I'd seen you!! Going to Massillon was a last minute decision for me. Now that I am familiar with the venue, there's a chance I'll head back for the Aug show.
I'm a freshman in HS, I play trombone (switching to baritone in marching so I can have the opportunity of doing drum corps), living in Texas. Carolina Crown is the Corps that I look up to because their brass is, in my opinion, the best, and they have so much balance, power, and they are just over all amazing. Anyways, is there anything I can do right now to try and get a better chance at making Carolina Crown later on? --Btw I'm planning on marching SoundSport this upcoming summer and then Open Class for two summers after.--
For the panning shots, anything but a 360 degree shutter angle looks choppy. Otherwise, I vary my shutter speed depending on the lighting. Unfortunately, after sundown, it's a risk to stray from 360 degree shutter angle, not just because of low light conditions, but due to the possibility of flicker from lights. Otherwise, my shutter speed will vary depending on the amount of light I want, and whether I was able to use an ND filter. These are not controlled conditions -- it is videography in the real world :)
have you ever thought of purchasing a nice pair of omnidirectional mini condensers? i know everyone loves the zip & sizzle, but i think the omni's would sound far more natural.
+Erick Matta what specific setup did you have in mind? As far as an arc with the hornline 180° around me, this mic (matched cardioid condenser pair) is hard to beat. For circles, yes, there could be a better setup, though nothing on the market would come close as far as usability. As far as "sizzle and zip", that might be the result of listening on consumer oriented headphones of speakers that boost the highs.
i am a professional musician and recording engineer who happens to also be an audiophile. i use Schoeps, Sennheiser, AKG, & Neumann mics for on location recording. in general, i far prefer omni's to directional mics(cardioid) although at times they are unrealistic for certain scenarios. they also tend to deal with extreme volumes & transient hits better than cardioids. another major benefit is that they have a much better extended low frequency. i'm thinking a spaced pair on an 18"-24" bar could be a starting point.
+Erick Matta as it stands, the stereo image I have is very realistic, and I can't see wanting to change that. As far as frequency response, my setup is capturing far lower into the bass register than is even needed. Regarding transients and dynamics, I'd be curious to know what you mean by "dealing with" better. I can't see a reason I'd want to put microphones 18"-24" apart when my setup is already much more compact and closer to the stereo image of human ears - not only relying on delay for effect. I'd be curious to hear some of your onsite work, but I'm skeptical there is a much better setup that will allow me to jog with camera in hand for "run and gun" videography and still sound this realistic. I appreciate the creation of beautiful recordings that sound "better" than real life, but that's not my goal here - I'm just trying to capture this sound as it is. If anything, what I need to do is experiment with binaural recording, not omnis which can sound unrealistic as you said. Finally, the main limitation of my setup is the preamps of the cameras I'm using. The way things are set up, I have to record with way more headroom than I actually need and that of course adds unnecessary noise - but going mic into camera is the only good workflow for dealing with this much footage. Can't deal with syncing audio for hours and hours of footage :)
+Hunter Curtis Good question! I do use some subtle tweaks (carefully chosen, with lots of experimentation) across all of my videos to compensate for imperfections in mic response... A HornlineFanatic trade secret, if you will :) not unlike "calibration data" provided by manufacturers of some high end mics. But otherwise, the audio is not "enhanced" in any way to embellish it beyond how good it sounds in person. No extra reverb, or fancy adjustments that would typically be done by professional mixing and mastering engineers. (In my opinion, it would be hard to tweak any hornline audio to sound "better" than real life, since the sound is already perfect). So yes, about as raw as you can get. With a good pair of headphones that do not exaggerate the bass or treble - with the volume turned up to hazardous levels (not recommended) - my audio should sound pretty close to how it does in person.
I'm a snare drummer and I want to be on Carolina Crown literally just because of their brass
2:28 makes me the happiest person on the planet
The chord at 3:52 is a great example of a hornline playing with near perfect control and relaxation yet still having an incredible amount of power.
The body knows how to breathe. The tricky part is un-learning the forced, unbalanced ways we're taught to play. At the player's end of the mouthpiece, you can be exhaling as if you're letting out a big, lazy sigh, and you'll unleash holy hell out the horn.
Holy cow. The innate combination of balance and POWER throughout the horn line from 2:30 to 3:00 is impeccable. Rivals the 2013 line.
Thank you for being part of our circle for a day! This is really awesome! 👑🎺🎶
Thanks for having me!! Unbelievable sounds :)
Thanks for consistently making the best DCI hornline videos, HF!
Thank you :)
yup, what he said.
this stuff is like crack.
Star of Indiana '93 😍. Oh wait sorry Crown '16 😅.
2:30 and out is just amazing. I'm speechless.
I love that hit at 2:30. It gives me chills all the time.
Absolutely! I just listened at full volume in my car. My ears are still ringing.
I literally listened to the hit at 2:30 ten times and I got bigger chills every time
They've never sounded better! Wow!
2:53 most nutabble chord ever
I like 2:47 personally
2:38 when the tubas come in 😍
Wow. The minor Medea chords had my jaw locked in an o the entire time, I honestly can't believe what just happened. I'm glad to see these getting more views more quickly, you know how much we appreciate you. 👏🏻
Of course doing it because of how much I love hornlines, but thank you for the kind words :)
Their hornline is literally so Heavenly ugh idk know what it is about their hornline just BEAUTIFUL , one of if the best hornline in DCI , in MY opinion, so no one get butt hurt lol.
likely the best hornline put on a field so far.
That horn line is EVERYTHING I ordered 👏🏾🙌🏾✊🏾👌🏾❤️👑 #WhoDoITip
lol
None of my business or anything but relentless shouldve won first place my favorite show of all time😍🙌🙌🙌🙌
OMG... Best Hornline in DCI in my opinion... matt harloff is a lyrical genius
Crown always stepping it up. Excellent!! I hope Crown or Coats win Championships this year. Blue devils have been winning for years and it's nice to change it up.
Sounds like another Jim Ott year! :-)
😎 🔥 🎺 🔥 😎
🏆
I'm sorry I know I'm late. I watched them all live at finals but man is it nice to sit back and just listen to the pure quality of this horn line by themselves. Truly impressive!!
Dude, having seen them rehearse and spending a day with them at the brass camp, seeing how much they've improved, I cannot wait to see how they do in finals. Great video as always.
Can't wait for late season. And thanks!!
Good lord, I could listen to them warmup for hours
So fucking good
I love the beginning of the corps walking, especially with last year's bluecoats.
Thanks!! A Hornline Fanatic trademark :)
2016 Carolina Crown sound incredible. Hyped for the finals. Thank you for another great upload, you are one of my favorite new channels.
Thank you :) Glad you found this channel!!
the triple tonguing is awsome
Sounds like our opener from my marching season this past year 😩😍 love it!!
By far my most favorite DCI channel. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind comment :)
Though they didn't win I absolutely loved the show this year
Here we GO!! Can't wait to see them in Winston Salem, NC again this year!!! YEP!!
No video can accurately depict what it's like to sit inside that circle. It will blow your mind! 😍😍😍
Hornline Fanatic on the road early : nice !
:)
I love the early coverage- it'll be awesome to hear their sound get better and better later on throughout the summer! Can you imagine?? It's only June and the corps sounds like this. Damn! It's gonna be a great season!!!
Cannot wait to hear them again in late season :)
The first shot is so epic, i cant believe it. Just legendary
Goosebumps.
This gave me Huge Goose bumps !!! Show em up Crown.
That low brass sounds good with the brick wall!
hopefully the battle for first will be between crown and bluecoats!
I'm still salty about what happened last season but after hearing BD at a rehearsal I kinda want them to take it for 2016. Just my opinion.
After hearing the bluecoats in 2014,2015,and now 2016 I really want them to take it this year
let's not forget about the devils erick!
Miyala Peters let's forget about them please
So many haters lmao
It's crazy how they can have a hit at max volume for a good 30 seconds. I hope I'm not the only one who appreciates that :)
Ben GS Well, they're stagger breathing, so in reality, most of them are at max volume for only 10 seconds at a time
I'm proud to say, this core most definitely gives me more goosebumps than any other core.
my god the fucking R E L E A S E S
Y’all make me cry happy tears.
2:30 gives me chills every time
Medea lives!!!
Imagine this in August....
Seeing them in person at San Antonio was incredible! especially when they played 2:30 on the field!
Dude. Your vids are absolutely breathtaking and always send chills right down my spine. PLEASE DON'T EVER STOP. lol. Thanks though for real for dat crispy audio quality.....
Thank you :) Ultimately just making the recordings I always used to wish existed, but it's awesome to know others enjoy them as well.
Thank you so much you Fanatic!
My pleasure!
That Medea hit is the sexiest thing ever written in DCI. If you can change my mind I will be amazed
Thank you for these posts! It means the world to me, now that I don't get to attend as many shows as I'd like! Bless up!
great blend of all the horns
we got it this year go crown #relentless
absolutely stunning
Once again, sonic excellence = Carolina Crown!
Still love this
I absolutely love this channel!
Thank you :)
It's cool listening to videos of the early season in comparison to the final product. Finals was super clean but the dirt in this one is real lol. Amazing sound though
Would love for this to be me one day
Iam super excited for this! Thank you for all you do, I love every second of it!!!
Thank you :)
Awesome video!
Thank you!!
Great videos and especially awesome audio! I hate listening to poor quality audio uploads! Totally unfair to the corps ! Having heard all these corps live, your audio is like being there! Keep up the good work! Geo.
Ah yes! So glad you are back at it again this year! Eagerly awaiting a Bluecoats video! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks :) And Bluecoats are next!! Coming soon.
They sound this good now God help us in August I don't think our ears or brains are prepared for what happens next
Eargasmic
same!
It's so awesome that they're playing music my highschool played last year
funny thing too, one of their trumpet players is also one of our techs XD
I don't know if it was Dawson but I do remember it being played in the Houston Area
ditto what others have already said with extra special thanks too
Just amazing sound !!
Thank you.
awesome editing... well done. Like, wow.....
Great vid!! I was wondering if maybe there would be some Genesis vids??
Thanks :) I would like to get Troopers again. Will have to see how things play out in late season, and whether they let me in their circle.
You should definitely come film Crossmen this year : )
+Dylan Wootton I am hoping to! And stay tuned for some very late 2016 content these next few weeks :)
Those contras at 2:37 are just a powerhouse! Main reason I'm switching from trumpet to Tuba is the Contra.
Wow you are so lucky to even be in the presence of these gods 😂
Lucky and thankful!! What I would've given to hear something like this when I was in high school...
+HornlineFanatic Well I'm just barely going into high school rn 😂
DAMN.... that's excellent
Gotta love that pedal Bb at 2:37
No words!!!!!
2:35 that low end gives me tingles every tiiime
tripple tunging is hard af
Are the 1st trumpets going up to a high E-flat above the staff (Concert D-flat) at 2:53 or at 2:56?
Awesome vid! Will you be uploading bluecoats?
Catching Bluecoats tonight assuming the weather cooperates!
i keep putting 2:30 on repeat, wow😍
Damn Right!!!!!!
I'm SO UPSET I missed seeing you at Massillon! Will you be there for the August show?
Wish I'd seen you!! Going to Massillon was a last minute decision for me. Now that I am familiar with the venue, there's a chance I'll head back for the Aug show.
+HornlineFanatic Flying in from SoCal for that show in August.
Incredible! I am so glad you do this. What equipment do you use for audio and video?
"Not bad, Not bad!" clap clap clap
Holyyyyy the cutoff at 3:57 is insane tf

I can’t stop watching 2:25 to the end I need help I can’t stop watching it 😂
Love the vids! Have you ever thought about decreasing motion blur? I think it would make you the quality much better.
Thanks for the answer! Great work nonetheless.
Thanks :)
2:31 My body was clothed in a shell of goosebumps.
2:52 omg those contras are absolutely laying down the the bass thick like damn listen close you can hear them blowing walls down 😦😦😦😶😶😶
FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!!!!
When people ask why I do drum corps, I tell them to go to 2:25 and turn the volume all the way up. (The realistic volume)
ayy i was at this show.
what microphone are you using? the quality is amazing!
Thanks! I'm using a Rode SVMP.
