This is one of my favorite NES games. I live the music and the world. Truly a hidden gem. It was difficult, but eventually I beat it as a child, despite the frustrating password system.
I have wonderful memories playing this with my momma and sister as a kid! I always though some of those enemies are very creepy. The music just takes me back. Great game!
Agreed, fenshing, I love the atmosphere they brought to this game between the animation of the world, enemies as you mentioned, and of course the soundtrack as you mentioned.
One of the best bagels i have ever had was an asiago pepper bagel from a nort/eastern chain supermarket called price chopper. Delicious. I think i own this cartridge. Never played it. I dont even have a working nes unfortunately. Interesting watch. Lots of games. I probably would have liked if i tried them when I was younger.
A note on the item rooms, they aren't random at all! The game keeps an internal counter, with 4 possible states. When you enter a room with a hidden item, the counter ticks up one state. When you enter any item room the fourth time, killing all enemies in the room will cause the item to spawn. Keeping track of your item room state is pretty useful in several places. There's even an hourglass in the Tower of Trunk, in the first room on the top floor. Sure, you don't really need an hourglass at this point in the game, but it's there! Additionally, ranking up increases your character's acceleration from standstill to full speed (no change in top speed though). Hard to notice at first since it's a small increase per level, but it does add up. If I were to guess, increasing player acceleration and decreasing item use time was intended to wean players off of relying on wing boots for navigation. Especially considering that wing boots basically let you bypass the majority of the Evil One's fortress. Maybe the philosophy was "a strong warrior doesn't need the help", or, more video gamey, "you're supposed to be a more skillful player by time you get to the end, so we're taking off the training wheels." Just my speculation. No supporting evidence. Yeah, I've played this one... probably WAY too much. Even worse these days since Mrs. Lopez O'Brien got me this cart for my first Father's Day.
A fantastic class as always. Everyone I always knew always pronounced it "Fax - anadu". Yeah, this was one of those games I played a few times when I was very young, had no idea what I was doing, and never got very far. I always thought it was pretty sweet though, so sitting in a class on it was all kinds of interesting!
I got this one from a yard sale back in 96 while home from school. A hurricane had threatened my school but thankfully didn't hit. Very interesting but very difficult game. When it was time to return back to school I brought it to share with my dormmates along with Yoshi for the NES.
@@VideoGames101 Every time I got new NES games I had to bring them to school to show to the kids in my dorm. As I may have told you I went to the same school as the late great Ray Charles. I never met him because he went there long before me.

I want to say it was Sears or JC Penney but this is like a pre-1990 memory from somebody born in 1986. I'm not clear on the dates but it was definitely before I started kindergarten. This is one of those games that's just kind of a part of my soul. I dumped hours into it as a kid without ever really getting anywhere. Kind of like how I played Final Fantasy. The music always instantly brings me back to a time to where I didn't even know bad things could really happen in real life. I never actually completed the game until this decade. I followed a guide before these really detailed RUclips videos started coming out. I'm going to replay it at some point once I either get my laptop fixed or find a controller to my original Xbox.
I heard of Faxanadu when I was a kid, but never played the game. Not many NES games look like this. Interesting enemies and level design. Maybe Simon's Quest looks a little like this game. Strange fantasy world. Happy New Year. Thanks for sharing.
Yes!! Well, I know what I'm watching this afternoon. Faxanadu was in my top 5 for NES. Some girl in 7th grade was talking about it nonstop, so I went and got a copy. Then she was really serious that I can NOT beat it before her. 😄

this is the first time i saw it here. i may be referring to some ofyour oldervideos where you diod it more often. yes i have noticed your newer videos seem to scale it better, but even so sometimes i feel like you dont have itin 4 :3 but the native 240 which is slightly taller than 4:3 would have been displayed on the crt if that makes sense. if you rememberthe nes display window was slightly less wide than the crt because the crt was overscanned to its aspect ratio and developers knew that and so, many of them drew the screen with this in mind. but in thisvideo im referring to thattimestamp specifically.
@@VideoGames101 or just a summary is fine. like in a game like this the story is the main draw.
