ALWAYS take the battery out when you've exposed the motherboard like this. You want as little electricitty flowing around the circuits as possible to prevent shorting components if you accidentally touch something.

All went good ! I removed battery at first and also got grounded . Then i followed numbers from 12 to 1 and removed all heat sink , cleaned dusts and aplied new thermal paste . Then i putted heat sink on and followed numbers from 1 to 12 to screw up all correctly . After all i inserted battery and pluged in the power cabel and all was good! Cpu and Gpu temperatures dropped from 90-93 to 60-65 .

Thanks a lot for the video. My 5 years old laptop could not run games anymore since its GPU reached 89°. I have not yet replaced the thermal paste (waiting for it to be shipped), but just cleaning out the dust in the fans helped getting under 80° when playing.

Brother, you saved my laptop. I was heartbroken because my trusty gaming laptop was dying (I thought). Temps constantly reaching 95-100 degrees while playing, and crashing mid game on me.
I watched your vid last night. Went to the PC store this morning, spent $20 on tools and supplies, came home and spent an hour doing exactly what you did here. I do a half hour stress test on max settings, and my laptop is running 15-20 degrees cooler. No joke. Thanks so much!

You don't need to use a lot of thermal paste, as gaming laptops come with IHS attached to heatsink. Other than that, pretty useful video. My CPU fan broke down, so I'm in the process of replacing it.

  • @prizedcoffeecup
    @prizedcoffeecup 7 лет назад

I have a GE62-6QD and I'm glad to know that mine is similar enough to have a heatsink that comes off the same way as in this video...helped me figure out how I should pull it off safely. Thank you!
For anyone else with this same heatsink, the block for the GPU is rigid enough you can lazily screw it in, but the smaller block for the CPU is easier to move around as it's purely suspended by the heatpipe so you'll probably want to do the olden-golden-days even tightening where you go top left corner, bottom right corner, bottom left corner, top right corner, little by little until you finish getting the CPU tightened down. It's a small amount of flex, but you're way less likely to fuck the dye up this way.

Thanks for the video. My MSi GE72 Apache Pro had started to get very hot when gaming reaching 92c and thermal throttling the CPU and GPU. I undertook the steps in your guide and replaced the thermal compound (I used Arctic Silver 5) and WOW!! what a difference its made. Temps don't go above 76c on both CPU and GPU now even after 2 hours of gaming. The work was a lot easier than I expected thanks to your help. I also discovered that replacing the battery is an easy task. I was worried if this ever needed doing that I would have to return it to MSi service which would cost a small fortune. I upgraded my 128gb SATA M.2 drive to a 256gb PCI-e NVME M.2 drive at the same time. It was fast before but now Windows 10 boots to desktop in 4 seconds!!

Many thanks to you, gameboy3800, and to Lewong as well for his additional advices. I just went through the procedure today and all went well. This was my first time opening up my laptop & applying thermal paste and I couldn't have done it without your video.
I am exceedingly satisfied with the results. Most modern 3D games would no longer run on my 3.5 years-old laptop as the CPU would quickly reach 90C and throttle hard (even when running the fans at full speed). I applied Arctic Silver 5 to both the CPU (including integrated graphic card) and GPU, thinking that it would take a little while before seeing some improvement, as mentioned by you and Arctic 5 instructions.
Lo and Behold, temperatures on the modern 3D games that would run up my CPU to 90C now only reach 70C, without even pressing the button to force the fans to 6000rpm. It literally rejuvenated my laptop on the spot. Not entirely surprising considering how little of the original paste remained on the chips. I suppose MSI's paste is good enough to last the two year warranty and then you need to replace it.

First thing you should have done was remove the battery screw and battery. I dissasembled this exact computer model. The heat sink and fans are labeled with numbers 1-12. You need to remove them in reverse order starting with number 12. The fans are actually numbered as well 1-4 I believe. You remove the heatsink this way to make sure you don't damage the motherboard or dies. When you put it back together you put them in in sequential order starting with number one. I watched you remove the heat sink and I know for a fact you didn't remove them in order because the cpu has numbers 6, 10, 11, 12. You removed the cpu screws diagonally which may have saved your laptop. You actually may have damaged your system and haven't realized it yet.

I asked my friend to replace the thermal pace of my laptop (this model) and to install a new SSD while I was away.
Turns out I only set it to sleep and he didn't check while working on it.
Luckily the laptop survived and temps are way down. Also, a lot of old thermal paste was next to the CPU/GPU die,
I guess they did a very sloppy job at the factory. Anway thermal throttling on the CPU was a nightmare before and
now games run a lot smoother and the overall experience is better with the new SSD. I hope this laptop will serve me well for another 2 years or so.

As someone who still uses this laptop in 2024, the overheating issue is far and away the worst thing about it and is something that still plagues me. The thermal paste must be replaced often as it will quickly degrade back into a glorified space heater unless you use the highest end pastes. This on top of the atrociously designed hinges that support themselves via a piece of hard metal that's directly connected to the paper-thin plastic shell, and it is a horrible experience that I am now looking to free myself from via finding an old thinkpad instead. The hinge issue can be worked around with duct tape and metal clips at least. The overheating never ends.
The only saving grace of this laptop is that its performance is still great for today's standards, and can support modern OSs and software no problem.

Thanks for sharing what you know! Improving the lives of others. Making the world a better place.
This video would be more useful if it were Redone:
    - with you pointing to Exactly what screws (and/or items you are unscrewing), before you took them out.
You could use the screwdriver as a pointer.
    - if you could NOT Block the entire view of whatever it is we're supposed to be seeing/doing, with your hand and arm.
Either swap positions of your hands (front/left hand on top; back/right hand on bottom -- where "front" means "closest to the camera"),
    ..or Move the Camera !
    You have much knowledge.
To teach, to share your knowledge effectively, however, it is essential to take on the position of the viewer's eyes and the viewer's mind, instead of your own.
Essentially, always work from the learner's perspective or point of view and build the bridge to your own.

I had no problem following his video and took mine apart easier than I expected it to be. Once you get the bottom cover off its 4 screws for the CPU heatsink, 4 screws for the GPU heatsink and 2 screws on each fan. Its pretty obvious which screws to unscrew to remove the heatsink and fans assembly (remember to unplug the fan cables and then plug them back in again at the end. I would also advise disconnecting the battery after you get the cover off before attacking it with a screwdriver.

Could any fellow computer nerds help me out here?? :c
So I've replaced the stock thermal paste to my MSI, same model, same everything. But I removed the three screws around my fans, instead of disconnecting the entire thing with the fans. I cleaned my fans, cleaned the vents and what-not but I never disconnected my fans completely from my laptop.
My right fan, (GPU fan I think?) was making a lot of noise so I thought something maybe got caught inside it. (Never did find anything apparently wrong with it. but that's why I even opened it in the first place). When I cleaned up everything and put it back together it was immediately running cooler and smoother but my 2nd fan was still running loudly. After a couple days, the noise stopped happening and everything seemed to be running fine. It was fine for a couple months until about 2 days ago. The fan started sounding like a lawn mower again so I opened it up again and took a look. I turned it on while the back was off (very carefully), and pushed the 2nd fan button, just to see if I could figure out what was causing the fan to violently vibrate and give off the loud sounds it was.
Cleaned out the fans again, and I couldn't find anything wrong with anything. I got this laptop, brand new, last December as a Birthday present to myself,... and now that I've opened up the back and everything the warranty is void. I just need help figuring out what I got to do to get the fan to run smoothly again. Would a fan need to be replaced on such a new laptop? And if it does, could someone help me figure out what kind of fan I would need to buy? There seems to be a difference between the two fans in this particular model.
Sorry for the long post I was just trying to include any details that might make a difference in how to go about fixing this. This laptop is my baby, and I don't want to waste the time and money taking it to a professional and have them overcharge me for something that could be simple to fix??
Thanks for anybody who takes the time to read all of this. X. X

Just to clear up the misconception that you voided the warranty: according to some trails the customer has the right to open up the laptop, since it is a computer with interchangeable parts. You as a customer have the right to change this parts, and you have the right to maintane the laptop too, so that means to open it up. THEY have to prove something was wrong after YOU did something to it, not the other way around. In 99.99% of all cases the customer would win this situation in front of a trail, so they normaly don't try. Just send it in for a repair, and if they try to rip you off, or don`t want to fix it for free, threaten them with your lawyer.

I have a $5,000.00 MSI dual gtx 1080 laptop. After replacing thermal paste the CPU ran 20c less under load and gpu's 17c under load. This allowed me to overclock significantly. If you live in the USA removing the warranty sticker doesn't void your warranty. We have right to repair/upgrade/modify laws that protect us. MSI will fix your computer if your warranty sticker is broken as long as there isn't any physical or water damage.

Hello Gameboy, tell me please, which material is the CPU heatsink made of? Is it aluminum? I am asking because I would like to replace the factory thermal compound with liquid metal, as my MSI GE72 2QC 215 Apache (CPU) is throttling up to 50 % under full load and it's GTX 960M hits up to 92 °C even after cleaning. GPU's heatsink looks like it's made of copper, so that's fine. Thank you very much, Sir!

yes. if you look at 17:53 timestamp there's a freshly cleaned cpu and gpu coldplate. gpu one is clearly copper colored. cpu one is grey. not sure if it's full aluminum or has a nickel coating, but it is best to be on the safe side.

Artic silver 5 is conductable. Also, never disconnect the power adapter from the laptop while it's plugged in. There's a light on the adapter for a reason, to show you that the current is completely discharged before you disconnect from the laptop. You are shorting your laptop every time you're doing that.

    • @gameboy3800

mtb_d4n The correct way to flush any power from a laptop is to remove the power adaptor then take out the battery, then press the power button to flush any power left in the system. As the MSi notebooks battery on the GE Apache series is fitted internally you have to remove the bottom cover first to take out the battery. Then flip it over and press the power button a few times with the mains power cable removed.

My dad has this computer. At idle it sat around 65c and under load around 90c with throttling. After replacing the thermal paste with mx-4 it now sits around 40c idle and 74c under load. That was over a year ago. Put grizzly liquid metal in 2 months ago now it sits at 31c idle and 66c under load. That's a substantial gain but the Arctic MX-4 is plenty good enough.
