Just bought a 2nd hand laptop. Found a whole bunch of fluff in the cooling fan exhaust fins. Cleaned them up to see an immediate effect. Tomorrow I will clean and replace the thermal paste, great video!!
Hi, did you experience the "pump out" effect while using arctic mx4 as a thermal compound for your laptop? It's usually happens in laptop when the thermal compound is "pushed" out of the heatsink making performance worsen overtime. When you remove the heatsink the CPU die will looks very clean as if there wasn't any thermal paste applied at all.
I don't believe I've experienced this ever. I've heard that it is necessary to store your compound upright due to separation over time. I'm not sure if this is accurate but I've always done so and not had any issues.
Thank you. This was an excellent and thorough video. The demonstration and narrative was very well done and the added information provided is extremely valuable. Thanks again @BYOGamingPC #Excellent #Informative #TIM #Thermal
I thank you very much for that I watched other videos and they didn't use the cleaning solutions that just wiped it off and put the the paste on thank you very much for that I will make sure I do that on my new laptop it'll be more of an upgrade like you said Thank you again
this is the most helpful video i have watched about applying thermal paste!!! thank you so much!! i cant wait for the cleaners and the paste to arrive so that i can try this myself (and hopefully fix my overheating problem)
I have a Dell XPS laptop (i5-560m, nvidia gt-435m) and lately the temps are really starting to climb. I took it apart just enough to see what I was getting into and, to my surprise, it has thermal pads on the cpu and gpu. Should I replace pad with new pad or switch to paste? I e-mailed Dell tech support and received a "Product is out of warranty and tech support is no longer available" response. So any input you're willing to offer would be appreciated. Thank you.
If i would remove the heatsink to check if the thermalpaste layer is fine can i just place the heatsink back or do I always have to renew thermalpaste when removing the heatsink? Asking because you said somewhere below in case notebook has issues the thermalpaste should be checked.
Always change the thermal paste when you remove the heatsink. When you reinstall the heatsink there will not be an efficient seal between the spreader and the CPU/GPU with air pockets in between.
Thanks for this detailed explanation. I have a question though - doesn't the heatsink have any connection to power the cooling fans? Also, can I use water or nail polish remover to get rid of the gunk from the surface?
Do not use nail polish remover because it will do more harm than good. It will leave residue. Use rubbing alcohol of at least 90% purity or the ArctiClean kit linked in the description (preferred method). The CPU has thermal sensors built in to read temperatures.
Thank you. I have a P650RS-G with a Core i7 6820HK and a GTX 1070 which is heating up to 90C while gaming at full tilt on 4k and even FullHD. Although I got Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra for the CPU and stock paste for the GPU, I have not been able to bring the temps down even after undervolting so I guess the only thing left for me to do is re paste. I'm not sure if the ArctiClean solution will clear out the liquid metal CLLU thermal paste so I'm scared to proceed. Plus, I believe the heat is mainly due to summers, as I got the laptop in October last year.
I would not use liquid metal on a laptop because of its electrical conductivity. Use ArctiClean and be careful to remove all of the old TIM before repasting. Is the GPU or CPU hitting 90C?
The only options you really have for the GPU are undervolting or using an OC program like MSI AfterBurner to set thermal throttles to keep the GPU from passing a set temp. The GTX 1070 is tough to keep cool in a notebook.
Oh my, im late watching this.ive already install back all the heat sink fan and apply thermal paste.I didnt know that their steps in screw and the applying method for thermal paste. Should I re-do it again? What do you think?
It would work to do it that way but the cooling would be much less efficient. You would have impurities from the tissue lint and the old residue would make the thermal conductivity of the new paste very inefficient.
I replaced the thermal paste as shown but now my laptop will not turn on. I have fan speen but it shuts off imediatly after, what can the problem be? ( I have to mention that I touched the bumps on the cpu, the part with the thermal paste, with my finger in trying to remove all the old paste) is it possible to have shorted it?
sir, I hv lenovo y700 I applied the thermal paste artic silver on my cpu and gpu, it ran fine for 3-4 days then again my cpu temp went up to 90 degrees, then I again opened the laptop and applied the thermal, now the case is that my cpu is fine with 60 degrees but gpu temp is going above 90 degrees(which was previously 70-80 degrees) and I get lags between game again, can you help plz.
I know this is an old video and it is well made, but I why do you use "the pea method" in this case? That is a good method for desktop CPUs where the heat is mostly concentrated in spots around the middle, but for a laptop CPU you want to cover the whole die evenly, which can't be quaranteed without spreading the paste manually before putting the heatsink on.
Isopropyl alcohol is good to use but I'd use 90% or better but I would not use tape to apply paste. I'm not really sure why you would do that and you have the potential to do more harm than good with it.
I just use a tube of cp7 that came with my cryorig h7. I know how to change desktop cpu and gpu thermal paste I just wanted to double check for a laptop to see if there was any thing different, nothing's differnt at all just smaller
What if the heat sink copper tube was bent by mistake and I was able to return it back to the its original level but unfortunately the tube surface where the bending happened can never be 100% flat again. It is having a bending mark where I think it is not having the same internal spacing level. Do you think this my decrease the heat dissipation operation? I am afraid of not having good performance and the CPU temperature when playing high graphics is increasing to 92 degrees Celsius because of that. Please advise
If you're talking about the copper tubing then straightening it as much as possible should be fine. If you're referring to the heatsink plate that makes contact with the CPU itself then it could cause some serious heat issues. This particular notebook model doesn't have adequate CPU cooling so it is highly recommended to download Intel XTU and give the CPU a -150mV undervolt. It drops the temps by at least 10C and doesn't effect performance.
It would probably be better to err on the side of too much but not by a lot. You don't want to see it flowing off the CPU into a large mess. You just have to trust in physics and apply even pressure to make sure it spreads evenly. You can always do a trial run and test to see how you do with the intent to lift it off to see how well it spread and clean it to repaste once more.
I would just use isopropyl alcohol if you don't want to buy the ArctiClean. Just scraping it off will likely leave residue behind that will reduce conductivity.
Yup. Did all that and turned my laptop back on then it shut off immediatley and now I'm left with a brick. Any suggestions? It will turn on but won't post.

(Are the gold pins sensitive to q-tips=)
Without a picture it's difficult to know what you're referring to but I believe (if my assumption is correct) that you should be just fine leaving it. Unless you're talking about the pins for the socket. If you managed to get paste in there then you may be in trouble.
Hi experts. Make sure, your operating system is activated. Start RUclips, watch cod black ops with maximal resolution that is comfortable. Eg 720 p for 2.1 ghz cpu. After 30 min the cpu will reduce the heat, and the choppy screen. Install cod 4, for older laptop install an earlier version. Qualify, then the noisy fan will reduce noise forever . if you want far less heat, then charge your good battery, unplug, and start the laptop in bios. Drain it after every five charges in bios, then you will see the result in Windows. Complete silence with higher performance . if you have further trouble, then work with MS word below 20% on battery till it drains. Rest your laotop from 1 day till one week ac offline. You will see on power this: 0% charging, online, during startup. Then you are on the track to achieve the best possible performance.
It depends on your amount of usage and temps you run but anywhere from 3-7 years depending on what type of TIM you have and your usage scenarios. If you are getting high temps doing general computing then changing the past is the first place I'd check and also cleaning the fans.

What would you recommend i do? repaste? or is it just the game? im already using a cooling pad although it's old it still works. I wanna play Dark Souls but not if im constantly hovering in the 80c.
The problem with this particular notebook model is that the cooling solution for the CPU is inadequate. Temps are always high no matter what you do. You need to download Intel XTU and run your CPU with a -150mV underclock. It will run about 10C or more cooler and just fine.

BYOGamingPC Makes sense. Do you know if you can read the chipset temperature somehow? The usual tools don’t show a sensor for it on my machine.
