Today's Thought Experiment: None as such, but I'd like to hear what your favourite scene from this season was. Not episode as that's been done to death, but a specific scene.
All the ones in Duet. If I have to pick the scene where 'Gul Darhel' breaks down mid impersonation of the monster he was pretending to be. Powerful stuff.
@@dm121984”It's Marritza who's dead! Marritza, who was good for nothing but cowering under his bunk and weeping like a woman. Who every night covered his ears because he couldn't bear to hear the screaming... for mercy... of the Bajorans...”
Just plain simple Garick
Bashir meets Garick.
Mine is all the way back in the pilot when Sisko blackmailed Quark to stay on the station. It tells us instantly Sisko's character. Willing to get his hands a little dirty to get the job done. Approaching conflict as a chess master approaches a board. And able to see the big picture implications of small details. All of which foreshadow his actions in later seasons.
“You don’t stop growing up just because you live in the future.”-beautiful
When the algorithm discovers this channel people are gonna be shocked how much content is already there to watch. I'm excited for when even the early Voyager episodes are million+ views.
You are FAR more confident about that than I, but it's a nice thought.
I keep coming back because your videos are at the perfect level of humourful nerdiness, and it makes me smile. Cheers!
My favourite scenes would both be sad ones: From the Pilot, Ben Sisko's discussion of how he's not over his wife's death ("It's not linear") and from "Duet", the moment where Moritza is murdered ("Why!?" "He's a Cardassian! That's enough." "No, it's not").
Loved the season summaries you did for Voyager, glad they will also be part of DS9 🙂I never realized so much of season 1 (in)directly focuses on Kira's arc from freedom fighter to member of (Bajoran) society. You could have added Battle Lines to the list of Kira centric episodes: Kai Opaka helped Kira let go of the anger that kept her going during the Occupation, but was now holding her back. The healing process continued with Duet, but it was Opaka who set things in motion.
Arse, you're right. I should have included Battle Lines in her summary.
I'd personally say TOS had the strongest first season, but the fact that DS9 had "Duet" in S1 really raised the bar into the stratosphere for every other series in the franchise.
Those mug shots man, come on! Lol, lmao even.
Great stuff, both you and most of season 1.
Odo is such a genius character. I love all the characters, but I have a special place in my heart for Odo. Him and Nogg.
Garrick and the changing room scene.
also - love your farce
Whilst i totally agree with the summary of Bashir, i am glad he gets better over the next few seasons - i have to admit to being abit like Bashir when i was younger and i'm glad the show will so him get to be a better person over the next few years.
Bashir has the shocking joy of meaningful character growth. Not that others don't, in fact DS9 is a first for it in star trek in many ways, Bashir is a great example of it though.
@@Arenumberg His arc is not on Eggnog's or Damar's level, but yeah, he's decently fleshed out and given enough room to grow. One Bashir episode equals, on average, about twelve to fourteen seasons of Harry Kim's character growth, I'd say.
I love this channel. I smile every time you post a new video. Thank You.
When Sisko discovers Jake teaching Nog to read. I have family who usually assume the worst of me and this scene really struck a chord.
So glad i found your channel. I look forward to your videos every week.
Woof
I’ve been watching since you started reviewing Voyager, and DS9 is easily my personal favorite Trek series. I can’t wait to see your take on the rest of the series! Your brand of humor is just top notch!
Your channel is not a farce, it offers a perspective into the Trek world that holds the show accountable for the duffers but also praising them for the episodes (or even bits of episodes in the duffers) that excelled. You also explain why the duffers were such and how, often with only a minor tweak or two, they could have been improved.
Writers can learn from what you observe and critique, but you do it in a respectful way and it doesn't come across as arrogant.
As someone who struggles with self belief, it frustrates me when I see someone doing what I would do, putting yourself down when you have made something that is of genuine interest/use. Please don't call your channel a farce, it is the right amount of humour and critique and often with genuinely insightful, well, insight!
Something I just realized, for 4k subscribers you have a pretty good Patreon count. Just goes to show the quality of your work because I am sure there are tons of much bigger channels that have much fewer people chipping into a tip jar (even compensating for age demographic).
I am *very* lucky with the audience I've got. I was saying only a few days back in the comments of the last video, this channel punches WAY above its weight for patreon support and I've no clue why cos it's absolute fucking nonsense if we're being honest.
@@Unlimited_Lives your sarcastic way of accuracy describing scenes is brilliant. Whenever I recommend your channel I also include Voyager Nemesis with it. "... they perform ground cuttles. Ground cuttles then turns into fisting. The other guy doesn't like that and twats him on the head." It is entirely possible I did a spit take when I first heard that.
@@Unlimited_Lives we need this kind of absolute fucking nonsense. Thank you.
Unusually lively comment section for the size, too.
We're special! Or something.....
You gained my sub after I realized that watching the Voyager reviews was close enough to count as rewatching the series again, which I've been doing every 2 or 3 years. This will count for DS9, as well. I hope we get to have all the other series', eventually. The dogs could maybe get shunted out to Broken Bow, Oklahoma?
Bashir reminds me constantly of the fresh genius college student that got to skip some grades. His character would have benefited more from some work, or a better passenger episode, but it’s workable.
I do want to mention that I think these reviews work because DS9/Voyager came out when there wasn’t the internet/youtube. It also helps that the British accent is likely the superior voice over in 90% cases.
Excellent recap 👍
Looking forward to season two 😊
What's interesting about The Passenger is, it partially inspired (or at least has some relevance to) the game Star Trek Resurgence. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone that hasn't played it though. It's nothing major that you'll be lost if you haven't seen the episode though.
From what I recall, DS9 was treated like the unwanted red headed step child of the trek universe. Reused sets and props, rejected stories from TNG etc.
01:20 lol the odd capture of Sisko's face.
How do I get this channel in front of 7 billion people because I know they'll all love it
Hey Unlimited Lives, why is DS9 season 1 only 20 episodes? Was too much money spent on establishing the show & season 1 & ratings not enough to justify 26 episodes?
In short: I don't know.
In long: IIII dddoooonnnn'tttt kkknnooooowwwww.
In serious: There were rumbles about budget issues during the middle of the season so it's *possible* it was cut short. It's also *possible* that there were stories held back for season 2 as happened with Voyager. It's also *possible* that Season 1 was always intended to be a 20 episode run due to the costs of setting up a whole new series and to provide room for the 'expected unexpecteds'. I've not found any definitive data on the reason, but all of those are plausible. If anybody reading this has evidence to clear this up, I'd be interested to see it.
It is amazing how the worst episodes of DS9 first season is made into two known movies.
The Passenger > Fallen (1998)
Move Along Home > Jumanji (1995)
You already had me, but dislikes: Allamaraine got me even more.
Also most people dislike being accused of murder... who knew?
I had to look up what "dogsbody" meant and then I laughed hard. Poor Miles.
A little off topic, but your brief mention of videogames must've got me thinking. Are we eventually going to get a ''Star Trek: DS9 - Harbinger' review like you did with Voyagers Elite Force?
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe...
To be fair to Odo and Dax, no one likes being accused of murder
For my money, the strongest season of Trek yet.
omg that video still of kira
youve become one of my fave youtubers
10:27 Personally it's a bit like you're doing something like what Yahtzee Croshaw does but for games. I just like the snarky commentary.
Love your reviews, possibly because you are spicy brained like me. I just wish I wasn't broke so I could support you on Patreon.
I absolutely love your reviews my dude. Though it's clear that you're a trekkie, have you considered showing your "love" to other scifi franchises? It seems like stargate might be a suitable candidate for your pedantry also, when you're all wrapped up with trek of course.
7:08 : did I miss an episode? I dont remember the Stem Bolts episode, wasnt that what lead to being a Landowner?
Yep. Then the Bajoran government wants to buy the land.
Pretty much every first season of any Trek show has to shake out the bugs. Some shows like Voyager never really get going, but after a few rough season 2 eps, DS9 rights itself very well.
I love how the Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnivorous RUclips Algorithm noticed I was watching lots of random Star Trek clips, remembered I really enjoyed the Overanalyzing Avatar channel, and started recommending me what is, in essence, Overanalyzing Star Trek Voyager. Praise be the Algorithm!
And boy was I enthused when I saw you had started doing the DS9 episodes as well! As most intellectual, ethical, well-raised and good-looking people, DS9 has a solidly locked position in my top 10 favourite Star Trek Main Series, so I eagerly clicked that playlist. And now the first season's done, and I can't wait for more.
Question, though: why is the playlist backwards? It's only a minor inconvenience to, as they say, "use the manual override" and click each episode seperately, but, to put it in a broader, philosophical or even religious context: Why Are Things The Way They Are In Stead Of Perfect?
All the love.
How curious. I don't recall having reversed the playlists for all the Voyager seasons and they were fine. I know RUclips's had some... uh... "upgrades" recently so it could be that or could be that I just forgot. Seven times. Which is more likely than it sounds.
Either way, thanks for bringing the problem to my attention and it should be corrected now. I would absolutely rather know about these things when they're spotted so I can fix them.
The strongest first seaon? Yeh, maybe. The quality will remain high throughout all the seasons, until the death of [redacted] before season 7. Season 7 is the season with numerous "skip episode" instances for me, quality dropping as a stone: I think it was clear it was the last season, budget was cut even more, people were cut and transfered to other project, leaving a skeleton crew to wrap it up. At least that's my impression. Evidence: they start to make musical numbers in the episodes, that's a clear sign for me.
Funny how 3 of Dax's six likes/dislikes are more about Bashir, but only one of his are about her.
I'll watch ds9 season summaries.
Man, now I'm wondering if the Betazoids suddenly dropped a new Nom de Guerre, 'cause all I heard at the end there was "People of Troi." Maybe they're just trying to be hip.
I'm a bit confused - you talked about Jake Sisco yet didn't mention Garek?
Main cast only on these summaries or we'd be here all day. If they're in the main promo photos for the show, they get a mention.
Garak wasn't really "here" during the first season. No, that goodness comes later.
Despite what some fans believe, Garak is not the centre of the DS9 universe. He's a great character who will shine very brightly LATER in the series while Jake has more to do in the beginning. I don't see how this could confuse you.
I'm a bit confused. This season seems to get lumped into all the talk of bad Trek first seasons, but I thought it was pretty solid. yeah there were some moments which didn't work, but even move along home and the wishes episodes had aspects I appreciate. I don't think any of these episodes are a complete waste. Sure the series would get better, but I thought season 1 was a solid start for the series. Now I shall drink y whisky and have some pizza. Thank you for yet another solid season of reviews. They are generally the highlights of my days that they release.
I think it's a case of later seasons are so much stronger, this one looks like a stinker by comparison. Agree though as far as 1st seasons go it's relatively strong.
@@nynexman4464 Yeah that's probably it, but I can't help but think too many people think of alamarain, however that's spelled, and rumplestiltskin, again however that's spelled. When there's so much good stuff. And he talked about Duet being as good because of limitations and that makes me think of TNG's Drumhead which was a similar situation. Amazing how limitations can help a story with talented writers.
I think DS9 only had one bad season... season 7
TBF most people do hold it up as the strongest first season in Trek too.
@@BGRANT777X I didn't think season 7 was bad, but.. It definitely had problems. So I can understand taht opinion.
If you ever need more filler between seasons you could make a season. Comparison between voyager and ds9 season and which one was better overall
❤
In my opinion, it was Too Short A Season.
