Paul on Alcoholism and the Burden of Guilt

  • At an early age, Paul's addiction led him to crime and the accidental killing of two people. Forced to bear the guilt, Paul then used alcoholism as a "slow form of suicide." Though Paul struggles with the idea of purpose, he now hopes that his story and his life in recovery will help others to know that "no matter what you been through, recovery is possible."

I am 54 and know if I don't stop this madness I probably will not make it to 55. I am very fortunate that I have not died already. Thanks to God. Keep up the good work.

A prison Chaplain was famous for telling inmates who felt their forgiveness was impossible or they were underserving...that remorse, amends if possible and ending the cycle of hurting others or themselves was good enough. Life long self hatred & guilt would be a waste of a person's life. And, wasting your whole life is the greatest wrong and doesn't respect or honor those who died.

There is no problem or difficulty that alcohol could not make worse.

Please turn to Jesus He loves you very much, He is the God of miracles, i was ill for a long time, but the doctors couldn't really help me, i don't blame them there was only so much that they could of done for me, Then Jesus gave me a miracle and healed me, There is Hope in Jesus, God has done amazing things in my life and in the life's of people i know and love, He can do the same for you and yours, When you need Him call on Him, The bible tells us in Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, He is the God of comfort and will be there for you when you call on Him, God saved someone i love from an illness leading to death, There is nothing impossible to God, Its as simple as asking Jesus into your heart and life to be your personal Lord and Saviour, Confess your sins to Jesus and Jesus will forgive you, And if you truly seek Him Jesus will answer you, i know this because He answered me when i called out to Him,

I've got so many haunting memories due to drinking, especially 1 incident, yet I still drink to deal with it... The irony 😞

Yes, God exists and He forgives completely when we have real sorrow. He allows tragic incidents to happen and he always brings good out of it.

So sorry to hear you had to go through all this. I posted this somewhere else but it fits your story too in a different way.
All one needs to know about God is that you are not God. Think about it. It is very profound. This is what it is all about. That is also when you do not understand the notion of a Higher power. Stuck in the memory of 15 years old means stuck in that emotion. WE are more than just our emotions. We CAN control our emotions instead of our emotions controlling us. It is like being in the driving seat instead of our emotions driving the car (our body). Addiction hijacks the FEELGOOD system we all have, we need it for our survival. Paul you are allowed to feel good again. You have to, because that is the only way you will be able to make other people happy. So sorry to hear you had to go through all this, but it may help you to become aware in a way that you may otherwise not have found.

Paul… thank you for sharing your story! Your story gives hope to others who are struggling with their own mistakes. Just know that there is a God!! You’ll find Him and can get to know him in the pages of the Bible! He’s waiting for you with a loving heart! He is just but is merciful and only wants a contrite and broken heart, that He will not despise!

The one thing that gets to me is if it is possible to forgive yourself? I hope you, and everyone with a similar past, can find forgiveness somehow.

He needs to change the narrative. Saying “he killed them” isn’t accurate. He made a bad decision to drive a car that resulted in an accident in which they died. He didn’t set out to hurt or kill anyone it was an accident. Until he accepts that he will never be able to forgive himself.
