Glad you got to see the #1 show in dci history. There is a reason the 90's were the height of the activity. btw back in 2001-2002 the activity switched from horns pitched in G to horns in Bb. The high pitched G bugle was called a soprano and once they switched to Bb it was called a trumpet (but they're still frequently called sopranos in the activity today). It's called "screaming" when a soprano has a solo where they play stupidly high and loud. The Madison Scouts have a long history of great "screamers."

    • @stephenpulver9720

Wow I’m so glad you actually know about the horns! I wanted to be in the scouts in 95 96, 97 98, 99, because of ‘A Day In The Life of A Bullfighter’ Also The Phantom Regiment’s ‘adventures under a darkened the sky’ sop in G And the entire Hornline forever!

Yep, even in the 70's when I marched, the soprano soloist rocked! I played soprano too, but did not have the high note range. Still, it was louder than my trumpet. Those bugles put out sound!!

Spanish, Latin-jazz based show. The official title of the show was “A Day In The Life Of A Bullfighter.” 25 years later, it’s still one of the greatest drum corps shows to grace a field.

I watched the DCI broadcast a thousand times. Steve Rondinaro introduces the show as “A day in the life as a bullfighter” while they did their on the field warmup “Bolero”, which made it into the show the following year. This! Place! Is! Electric!

      @AlexandriPatris 4 года назад +2

@@JAlexandrian I always saw that as a description of the show's concept rather than a show title. Like I mentioned, the CD liner notes had no title for the show even though there were titles for the other corps. If it had an official title, then it probably would have been included as well.

I was 15years old and in the audience when I saw this show. I’m a Green Machine fan from birth and loved seeing them win their second championship that season however, the 1995 Scouts show remains one of my top 3 favs of all time. “A day in the life of a bullfighter” was far and away a top fan favorite of all time, too!!!The stands almost never sat down and practically the entire closer, people were on their feet screaming their heads off for those kids!!!! Screamer sopranos, a kicking snare line, expressive color guard, marching and maneuvering, the music carrying that Latin flavor. I wish it would have shown them taking the field. They stretched from sideline to sideline on the goal line and marched out perfectly straight and once they hit the 35, shifted into the fleur de lis then went to the 50. The crowed was already screaming by then and they hadn’t even played a single note! The. Their warm up, Bolero. Which the crowed screamed for as well. I’ll never forget the 1995 Madison Scouts. I’d written you also begging you to review this show recently so I’m extremely glad you saw it. I oh so miss the days when you were guaranteed to get a show like this from Madison. It was maybe two or three years later they began dropping like crazy in the placings and the fans would boo constantly. 8th, 10th, even 12th place at finals and even began missing finals!!!! I miss THIS type of Madison Scouts corps.. if this doesn’t make you feel amazing and like a million bucks, nothing can.

The Madison Scouts of the 90's were all about entertainment at the highest level. '95, '96, '97, and '99 are all regularly counted as some of the most entertaining and fan favorite drum corps shows to date. Their other shows of the 90's are also just entertaining and in your face as well, but those 4 rise to the next level.

Say what you will about the new direction of expression for the artistry and expression of the past 5 years or so, but there's just something visceral about seeing a recognizable silhouette in the distance. Being able to see a group coming and know EXACTLY who it is just by the outline or a color combination.

Also the brass playing in my opinion was better in the 90s. It doesn't seem like the focus is there anymore, w/ the exception of Crown. Sometimes the electronic stuff is neat (ie Kinetic Noise), but when you're using it to actually affect or "improve" the sound of the brass, yuck. I feel that the most important/beneficial part of this activity is teaching these kids how to play their horns better.

  • @ChrisMignemi
    @ChrisMignemi 4 года назад +9

Hey Courtney! I’m going to help you out a bit with some of your questions. So it’s a Latin Jazz show, and most of the music is Spanish (from Spain) in origin.
The horns - top to bottom are as follows:
    Soprano (trumpet looking horn)
    Mellophone
French Horn (I think Scouts had french horns back then)
    Baritone
    Euphonium
Contra Bass (the shoulder mounted huge horns)
The horns back then were considered “bugles” because they are pitched in the key of G, just like old style military bugles.
Since 2000, there was a rule change, and drum corps have stopped using bugles and are playing on B flat (Bb) horns. The sopranos are now trumpets, and the contra basses are now tubas.
The one small fix to your lexicon is that the plural of color guard is color guard. (No s at the end). Most people just say “guard” or “the guard”.
I am SO happy you got to see this show. It’s one of my favorites, and I was in attendance for finals that year in Buffalo, NY, so it’s special for me!

I think part of it is because of the familiarity of the music. The music you hear is something that you could listen to on an album. This type of show was More accessible when watching it just the 1st or 2nd time. Nowadays with the complexity you have to see those shows a bunch of times before you can really get into it. This is neither good nor bad but it just means that those old shows the crowd could get into it right away. And actually for this particular show even the 10th time it's amazing!

That's why they no longer get large crowds in descendants people aboard with marching bands expecting to see a drum and bugle Corps. Courtney, Fun Fact: If you noticed the sound from the horns are different that's because they are!!! Before the year 2000 drum corps horns were played in a different key and had slightly bigger bores and bells. The metal was lighter and shinier. They were closer to what was called a bugle during the early days before DCI was founded, pre 1972. These "bugles"/horns were in the key of G instead of B-flat. This made the sound reach into the "stratosphere" or a higher pitch because they were!! Usually they were played with 1 or 2 valves and/or a rotary. I played on what was called a soprano, translated trumpet in concert horn (B-flat) terms. I played in drum corps, honors music and many other groups between 1989 & 1995. That was it for me, even though I still played in other forms afterwards. One of the soprano soloists went to school with ne at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio...Schipper (misp.). We both were soprano soloists. Our jobs were the high notes. 🎶🎵

At about 8:50 in the performance, you saw a man in a green shirt right in front of the drum line. He was a judge.
DCI is almost 100% American, though there have been some corps in Canada, Japan, etc. But, it's about as Americana as you can get.
Malaga is a city in Spain, so I'd lean toward Spanish, rather than Mexican.
In the old days, they called this Drum & Bugle Corps, so these are bugles.
I've always been a fan of the Scouts.

So, this performance in particular was in a .wav file I somehow ended up getting, and it used to play in my random playlist rotation - it was absolutely part of my life in 1995, and every time I hear it, I can pound out those accented sixlets and triplets along with them 🙃 .. I wasn't aware of where this stood among all of the other DCI performances over the years, but blooking at the comments it's fun to see that it's universally seen as one of the best DCI performances ever .. it really is a great 11 minutes of sound...

Part of it has to do with the fact that they
Se were actually high school bands copying this show!
I marched with the 1988 and 1989 Madison scouts. The years after we won DCI I heard so many bands playing Malaguena. I thought well maybe that's a fluke but the next year we played a sandi Patty gospel tune "Make his Praise Glorious." I saw no less than 3 or 4 marching bands play that song the next 2 seasons. Crazy being a marching rock star!

This style show was the blueprint for winning corps up until the early 1980s when some of us really started to get serious about classical and theme based shows. The real change started in 83 when the Cadets won with the Rocky Point Holiday show.
"The Garfield Cadets became the first corps from the East to win the DCI title in 1983, featuring a new style of drill by George Zingali that was akin to watching droplets of water move around, or watching the results of someone playing with one of those small chains that are attached to pens at a bank. Indeed, Zingali stated those were two methods he utilized to get ideas for his new type of “flex-drill.”"
    www.dci.org/news/spotlight-of-the-week-1983-garfield-cadets
This truly was the season that changed Drum Corps forever.

Horns? Yes .... Trumpets? No. G bugles prior to the year 2000.
The horns are named like voices of a choir because they are all G bugles in different sizes. Soprano (high) Alto (or mello's) Baritone (also Euphonium) and Contrabass. They're very similar in construction to their concert band counterparts but are much harder to play in tune. Some claim they are louder because of the conical bell construction. Some claim they are louder because all are in the pitch of G and the overtones stack easier. Meh.... regardless.... the Men of Madison did NOT disappoint in 1995. The crowd gave them well deserved standing ovations at multiple times during the show and felt they should have placed higher than 4th (regardless of visual dirt). MYNWA
