I remember seeing this show in Madison all three nights (quarters, semis, and finals). They absolutely cranked it up a notch or two - again, the crowd knew it, and we all absolutely loved it (at least two massive standing o's for them that night). They moved up a spot from quarters/semis into finals (7th to 6th place), and were only .3 from catching 5th place. One of the most memorable 'catching fire at the right time' performances ever for me. Also, that brass line was underappreciated - that was some difficult music, and those guys were just on point!

The day we laid him to rest coincidentally DCI was having a competition in my city. It’s normal for the corps to practice at the local high schools. Well…God must’ve been conspiring to lift my spirits that day because when we got back from the cemetery, I found out from one of my band mates that Madison was practicing at one of our rival schools. I've loved watching your reaction videos because it gets me pumped to see someone enjoying them, and once I saw you reviewing JCS from '99, I didn't hesitate. This was my favorite year and show I ever marched and watching this brought back a FLOOD of memories and brought a few tears to my eye seeing your reaction. SO happy that our performance that warm August night 21 years ago excited you like that. That's why we did what we did. Year in, and year out.
I have my collection of DCI tapes through around 1997, and some later years. This is my first time seeing this show. Great show. It is a real treat watching you enjoy that show. I'm sure all of us who marched corps, from old timers like me to the current corps members, really appreciate you!! Thanks so much!!
Today all competitive hornlines play on brass instruments in the key of B flat and mellophones in F. But before 2000 all hornlines used bugles in the key of G. They had certain design features that made them extremely loud. So if you notice that hornlines sound louder in these older shows, it is because they are playing G bugles.
there's something about madison 99, especially early in the show, that just sounds extra lit somehow. like they made everyone else's G horns sound like Bb/F or something, hahah. the energy just bursts through the speakers! such an energized brassline that night. love gmen/bk from that year too, what a great 5-7 grouping.
I travelled over from the U.K. to the states to watch DCI finals in 98 and 99 and got to see this show live and it was amazing, I thought they’d place higher. Seeing it live was incredible, the scouts also stayed in my home town when on their 88 European tour another great year for Madison. I gave up my drum corps days in 2000 in the U.K. but always have a look on RUclips at some historical amazing shows

The amount of work they put in is crazy. They spend there whole summer doing this. 14 hour days during the summer, sleeping in school gyms and on a bus. During the school year they travel to practice too, i believe once a month. It’s insane. Look up top tens or just tops of DCI. You will see some crazy stuff!
I was in the Scouts from 89-91. My favorite part of performing was when we would get an audible gasp from the audience. It was a wonderful part of my life. MYNWA.
D0nutLord when I marched Bluecoats we never really played any shows with the Scouts- I don’t think 🤔. But there was one I do remember. When we were warming up we could see them in distance and hear them going through some loud hits. There’s definitely an aura about the Madison Scouts for sure. 💯 I felt like a little kid finally seeing an idol and being awestruck.
I was in the crowd. I miss finals in Camp Randall. Because I only live a couple miles away and I could just go down around campus after work every day for a week and listen to corps warmups
Those were the damn days. Lol. Just line up, execute, and blow the walls down. I saw this show in-person that year as a high school brass musician, and I can attest to how great they sounded. 1999 was honestly a great year for DCI. It was the last season in which all the corps used G bugles instead of the normal Bb and F marching brass you’d see in a typical high school or college marching band. The G bugles were much, much more temperamental and harder to tune and blend than standard brass. But when done well, the sound was honestly something hard to describe. It vibrated your bones. Lol.
CORRECTION: They're not founded on Boy Scouts, they're founded from the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) that chose the Boy Scouts through which to teach youth the power of themselves through music. VFW
I got to see the Scouts perform in 2017, along with a bunch of other drum corps and it was so magical, especially since it was during my first year of band and it gave me so much inspiration.
courtney would sure love madison scouts 95-98 eh? some of the most crowd-friendly shows ever. they got 6th this year. you should start guessing what corps place, after you watch the shows! would be interesting to hear how much more accurate you get with it over time. i loved the 5th through 7th placements that year, with glassmen (toledo, ohio) in 5th, madison scouts jumping up to 6th on finals night, and a really really great blue knights (denver, colorado) corps, still the highest scoring one in their history, falling from 5th on quarterfinals, to 6th on semifinals, and 7th on finals. all three shows were fantastic, 1999 is one of my favorite seasons. it was the least season where every corps was still technically on 'bugles,' instruments in the key of G, instead of the instruments that are used nowadays, Bb horns (or F for mellophones), which are the same ones that people use in bands and orchestras. the sound was 'brassier' in 1999 and earlier, if such a subjective comment is fair. pretty amazing that so many great hornlines from 1999 and earlier happened on instruments that the members ONLY play during drum corps, as opposed to year-round.
This reaction made me tear up a lil. My good friend Delane marched this year and you see a shot of him at 8:41. He passed away a few years ago. But seeing this was such a great memory for me
Thanks for watching. Your videos came up on my feed a few days ago and it has been good to reminisce about my time in the corps. 1999 was my second to last year in the corps (1996-2000) and this horn line was probably the best overall that I played with. Regarding your placement question, there are several factors that contributed to the lower placement of the Scouts in particular between 1995 and about 2001. The first was that DCI changed the scoring system in the early 90s to weight more of the scoring toward a category they called "general effect." This category was drastically weighted toward the colorguard and visual elements of the show. Scouts, at least at this time, did not have a very strong colorguard (you can see drops and ticks in this video). Additionally, the trend at this time was moving away from the military tradition (where the visual assessment was more concerned with ticks - or inaccuracies in timing and movement) and more toward pageantry like that found in Bands of America, which is largely focused on a lot of motion and movement, props, story, etc. Madison Scouts were slow on the uptake in this trend. Our footwork was second to none but our drill was written in the style of the 1970s and 80s corps. Caveliers, Blue Devils, and Santa Clara were the trend setters of this time period. In addition to these issues, Madison Scouts leadership under Scott Stewart at this time were very outspokenly critical of scoring in general and how the competitive elements of DCI were being weaponized against smaller corps. Essentially, DCI was funneling money to the winning corps and intentionally trying to shrink the number of corps in the system. Dan Atkinson and other DCI leadership were trying to turn DCI into a small set of traveling "super corps" and they have largely succeeded over the last several decades. There used to be well over 1000 corps and now there are only a few dozen. They intentionally destroyed what used to be a widespread educational activity for youth across the globe and turned it into a profit machine for a select handful of kids. Scott Stewart and the teaching staff engaged in a lot of active protest to this movement in what were probably unproductive ways - not going to judges critique or/and passive-aggressive interactions with the judging pool in DCI. As a result, the judges frequently engaged in retaliatory scoring of the Madison Scouts. This was more than performative because this cut into the corps budget (as DCI had attached show payouts to placement in order to destroy smaller corps by making them go bankrupt). Scott Stewart was later removed by the board and replaced with a revolving door of various directors and show coordinators in the 2000s, but a lot of damage was done to the corps through this process despite what was the ethical position of Stewart and the Scouts. The corps is still recovering financially from this era and simply doesn't have the talent draw that it used to during this period. Sometimes you can be on the right side of history and still lose literally and figuratively.
True, now that she’s seen and heard the serious side of drum corps...VK will bring lots of smiles to her...more than the beautiful smiles she already displays. She is a genuinely happy lady, all the time. One of God’s blessings.
This stadium is Camp Randall Stadium, the home of the University of Wisconsin, which is located in Madison...so these guys definitely had a home field advantage for this championship!
@@Iliketordles holy shit about time!!!! are you fuckin serious?? wowwwww. i marched bloo in 05, we competed against madison all summer (ONLY beat them on finals night), and the idea that carmen wasn't counted as an alumnus of the corps is disgusting and insane! she performed her ass off every night and helped make that corps/show what it was.
Courtney Coulston It’s some intense stuff 💯. Always being on a bus on the road. I’d lose track of which state we were in. Being that young and that far from family and old friends. There’s a definite learning curve physically and mentally. Which can be emotionally draining. When I came back home after the season was over , I was almost unrecognizable. Easily the best shape I’ve ever been in. I remember one part of our show we had to do 4 to 5s ( 5 yards in 4 steps) backwards at a fast tempo while playing this jazzy little riff at a soft dynamic. First time we ever practiced it I was dying. Legs were on fire and lungs were pumping like crazy. I barely survived it. Once my conditioning got with the program it was one of my favorite parts of the show. After each competition you get to hear the tapes from the caption judges who are on the field with you during your performance. I remember one of the judges was blown away with that part saying stuff like “ I can barely keep up with you guys and I’m not playing and instrument! Great stuff. You guys are moving and I mean bookin’ it, sounds so good too! Very nice! Good job Bluecoats” I see what they say about being part of a tight knit group operating at a high level. Whether it’s the armed forces, professional sports, DCI , etc. it’s hard to replicate that sense of camaraderie and force of unity after it’s over. I recommend anyone who wants to do it to keep working at it. It took me 2 years of auditioning before I made it. You’re up against kids who are also passionate about the craft who are journeying to audition from all around the world. I’m a solid trumpet player and it was no cakewalk for me in making it. If you’ve never been to a show I recommend it. Or be an OG and just find out which local H.S. the corps you want to see is staying and rehearsing at and go watch them practice. Either way, there’s nothing like hearing a drum corps in real life with actual ears. It’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. 💯💯💯 Thanks for making these videos and spreading the word about DCI to people who maybe weren’t aware of it! Very cool ✊🏼
If you like this one, I have two suggestions - Madison did almost a revamped version of this show that follows Judas's story more in 2016, and Madison's 1995 show is an all time great and a favorite of many - similar to this in terms of sound and style, but with a latin jazz focus
I was there for finals in 1999. They were electric that night. Watching drum corps videos doesn’t do the activity justice. Being in the audience, feeling the sound waves hitting your body is a completely different experience.
1986 Star of Indiana is the show that started it all(actually the Bridgemen started it). Star chose to leave DCI in 1993. ruclips.net/video/Pd9GloOo8Qo/видео.html
I saw this show in person. It is still one of my top 10 favorite all time shows. The raw energy and power of their brass gave you goosebumps. Especially the part where they depict the crucifixion with the company front and that awesome roaring musical note where everyone jumps to their feet. She reacted to that too.
Great reaction Courtney. That's what Scouts were about up until around 2000. It was about the fans and making them happy. Soon after, directorship and staff changed and the programming/competitive placement took a plummet. I'd say the Scouts from 88-99 were in their hayday. TREMENDOUS years before that .. and some after ... but that was their prime. I miss the Scott Stewart/Boerma days. Proud to have been a member. MYNWA
I was at this performance at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison WI! UW Madison has an awesome history itself you should check out! Jump Around registers on the Richter scale as an earthquake 😆
Cadets 2011 and academy 2016 have great storyline I recommend watching those. Carolina crown is crazy in 2011 and I think you should know some familiar songs in it
Madison Scouts never fail to inspire/impress. One of my favorite corps ever. We used to go to DCI MIDWEST in Whitewater, Wisconsin at the U.W. Whitewater campus. It was an annual, huge, extended family event that we looked forward to every year.
Congratulations. You are now part of a very exclusive class of people worldwide who can actually appreciate and understand what I consider to be the most spectacular and underrated activities in the world. Many people don't get it, because they either don't understand or are not moved by the music or performances. I consider myself lucky, if not blessed, to also be a part of this elite club!
You MUST attend a DCI Finals event. I am sure one of your followers could arrange a front row, if not on field vantage point. It's AMAZING!!!!! I LOVE your reactions!
I, too, like these older shows, when it was just the music and the marching. Nowadays, everybody has to do some big production, and there has to be a gimmick of some sort that I don't much care for. Madison was always a crowd favorite mostly, in my opinion, because while they were rarely in contention for a championship NOBODY "out-louded" them. (I was hoping to provide an even better example of that by suggesting the 2001 show, but sadly it isn't posted here.) In 1998, I heard this corp perform a concert in a smallish community college auditorium, where they did NOT use their "inside voices". I was in the 4th row center stage, and it felt like the sound waves should've had my hair blowing back as if I were riding in a convertible. It was probably the closest to heaven I'll ever get lol.
Someway, somehow, you have to get to a live show! The awe and energy is just electric!! Love these videos so much as a long time DCI supporter and fan!
I have watched all of your DCI reactions. Thank you so much for bringing eyes to the community. While it is still up on youtube, could you please do a reaction to ‘Crossmen 2012: Fragile’. It was the first show in years that brought them back to top 12, and sported an amazing flugelhorn line.
Courtney, Here is a couple more corps you should watch. The Cadets Spirit of Atlanta Velvet Knights Star of Indiana Bayonne Bridgemen The Crossmen Boston Crusaders
Your Welcome Also try to fly to the USA next year and go to the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown PA. It is one of the oldest DCI competition venues and the last major competition before Finals week. The first weekend in August....All the World Class corps compete in a two day event. One half of the corps compete Friday night and the other Saturday night. The rolling hills of eastern pa plus the smells of hot dogs, fries, and fried pierogies are something should be experienced by DCI fans at least once in their lives.
1995 Scouts is the show that SO many of us have shown to people that have never seen drum corps before. It’s really exciting, and has loads of raw power! You’ll love it!
It wasn't even one of the best Scouts shows ever. I can't list them all but their first championship in 1975 and later 1988 championship shows were better. Add to that 1980 and 1995, well, you get the idea.
Also...actual G-Bugles. Much debated, but nevertheless, that was a sound that few people today have ever heard live. It was a much fuller sound and significantly more "exciting," for lack of a better word, because for most musical arrangements, it mean the horn line was playing one overtone "slot" higher, and the resulting partials gave the sum total a completely different tone. The closest thing I can think of to describe it is that it somewhat resembled the way a train-whistle sounds. It's not an exact comparison. Writing about sound is a difficult thing to do. But it has some of that character...less buzzy than Bb horns, more "core." Sadly, it just doesn't come through in recordings. It's really more about how the horns engaged the air at a live performance. But you can catch a hint of the difference in this video (Madison had very nice bugles at the time...who knew they'd soon be obsolete).
You gotta watch Cadets 2011 “Between Angles and Demons”. It’s absolutely stunning in how intricate the marching is. Also check out Academy 2016 “Drum Corps Bride” and Carolina Crown 2014 “Out of This World”. All are amazing shows. The Crown show has some really really cool and complicated brass runs
This is one of my favorite shows. I always wonder if the design staff took some of this concept form the 1979 Crystal Lake Heraldry Guard from Crystal Lake, IL. That band was one of the best marching bands in the late 70's into the early 80's. Anyway, I love the intensity of the music and drill work so well together. Its too bad the Scouts tried it a second time and it was not good. But, I will say the 99 show was solid.
Madison Scouts hold a special place in my heart as they were the first “big corps” that I ever saw when they toured the west coast in 1994. I literally thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. At the time, as a sax player, I never thought I’d be able to do drum corps, but a couple years later, I learned a brass instrument and joined Pacific Crest (while they were still in their infancy). @Courtney Coulston , I’ve really enjoyed watching all of your DCI reactions as it reminds me of the sense of awe that I felt the first time I experienced it myself. I’m glad to let you know that the sense of awe never totally goes away even as your knowledge of the activity increases. Since my career is teaching 10 - 12 year olds how to play band (and string) instruments, I can’t wait to see a student that started with me as a beginner, play on the field with one of these groups. Also, as a music educator, obviously I have to offer to answer any questions about drum corps or music that you might have.
It's been fun Courtney to watch you grow in your understanding of drum corps in the short time I've been a fan of yours. Should you ever need a consultant or just a friend who can help you get to the next level of understanding I would suggest you talk with @Sam Signorelli who is also active on your channel. Sam was a soprano horn member of the Blue Devils. He was also a corps director and a life long fan. He has the breadth and depth of drum corps experience to share which I think you would enjoy.
Thank you again Courtney! Wonderful review. I always love watching your spontaneous, visceral reaction to these shows! Even not seeing it live, you still get it...how epic Drum Corps!!
Courtney, I could not get but stuff done today fast enough to see your reaction to this show! I was there, about the 40 yard line (right side as you're looking at the field) it was an AWESOME show, absolutely ELECTRIC. Thank you for bringing back this memory. They only placed 6th, and believe me, the judges made a lot of mortal enemies by giving them as low a score as they did. The winning show wasn't anywhere near as fun to watch, don't remember if it was Phantom or the Cadets that won it, either way not as good. Can't give you enough love for reacting to the Scouts. (getting married in less than a month, she'd be MAD lol) Keep the great stuff coming! 🤘❤😁

Greatest college football stadium EVER! Camp Randall! Madison, Wisconsin!!!
Heart pounding in person!!!
The Cadets 1984, 1987, 1993
A lot of good friends in that corps
That's awesome!
Lol.
This performance was in their "HOME" town at University of Madison, Wisconsin with lots of alumni in the stadium!
There was a female in the 2018 show, I saw it live in Atlanta and about flipped when she came out. She was the first ever.
14:44 She's ready for Crown 2014.
I agree!
Yes
Broooo 😂😂😂
She must be she said it twice 😂
That is an amazing pun, lmfao
I saw this live in Madison, Wisconsin. This was my first DCI Worlds Finals. Will never forget this performance.
SO glad you enjoyed it!
This era is peak DCI.
2019 Washington Nationals...19-31 to World Series Champions
Wow that's insane!
Courtney Coulston if you could do a reaction to it...that would be great
I’ll definitely keep it in mind!! Thanks John! 😊
Courtney Coulston thanx sweetie

@@hardcorehistorybuff5230 hmmm I guess I'm just assuming based on that "This is Drum Corps" VHS from 93. Thx
@@morgannowlen8375 they marched in vfw though before becoming a founding member of dci
I got to see the Scouts perform in 2017, along with a bunch of other drum corps and it was so magical, especially since it was during my first year of band and it gave me so much inspiration.
Really? I'm glad you enjoyed your experience!
I think they placed 6th one of my fav Madison shows
@8:12 - When she doesn't disappoint...(^_^) #WaitForIT and #ButWaitTheresMore
Thank-you again, Courtney!!
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it!
courtney would sure love madison scouts 95-98 eh? some of the most crowd-friendly shows ever.
they got 6th this year. you should start guessing what corps place, after you watch the shows! would be interesting to hear how much more accurate you get with it over time. i loved the 5th through 7th placements that year, with glassmen (toledo, ohio) in 5th, madison scouts jumping up to 6th on finals night, and a really really great blue knights (denver, colorado) corps, still the highest scoring one in their history, falling from 5th on quarterfinals, to 6th on semifinals, and 7th on finals. all three shows were fantastic, 1999 is one of my favorite seasons. it was the least season where every corps was still technically on 'bugles,' instruments in the key of G, instead of the instruments that are used nowadays, Bb horns (or F for mellophones), which are the same ones that people use in bands and orchestras. the sound was 'brassier' in 1999 and earlier, if such a subjective comment is fair. pretty amazing that so many great hornlines from 1999 and earlier happened on instruments that the members ONLY play during drum corps, as opposed to year-round.
We need to find 1991 Star of Indiana for her to watch ..... as well as Star of Indiana 1993.
I've never seen this show, so I'll be reacting too
13 minutes later update: Freakin awesome!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Wait till she hears about the velvet knights
1988 & 1992 VELVET KNIGHTS!
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR!!!!
Interesting to know! Thank you for informing me on that.
Before 2009 Camp Randall Stadium was basically dci Mecca, world championships had been held there so many times.
Madison actually had a female guest performer in 2005 (The Carmen Project), but she was not counted as an alumnus of the corps....not an actual Scout.
I think they retroactively made her an official member last year, although I am not sure of that.
Really?? I had no idea about that. Good to know!
🙌🏼 DCI vets list your Corps and year marched below :
Bluecoats 2003
Much respect to you!
Very nice! Good job Bluecoats”
I see what they say about being part of a tight knit group operating at a high level.
Thanks for making these videos and spreading the word about DCI to people who maybe weren’t aware of it! Very cool ✊🏼
There is no excuse for not seeing ‘89 phantom regiment! One of the GOAT shows!
I see! Thank you for the recommendation! I will look into it
If you like this one, I have two suggestions - Madison did almost a revamped version of this show that follows Judas's story more in 2016, and Madison's 1995 show is an all time great and a favorite of many - similar to this in terms of sound and style, but with a latin jazz focus
Thank you so much for your recommendations Max!! I will keep them in mind :)
Thanks for the recommendation! I will look into it.
Next watch the 1988 Madison Scouts. DCI Champions for that year.
Thank you for the recommendation! I will look into it.
Watching you, watch this and your reactions made me cry a little. It’s nice to see people like you have positive reactions to what we did.
You need to also watch Madison Scouts 1995 and 1997 shows!
Thank you for the recommendations! I will look into them.
MYNWA

Academy 2016 is my favorite show of all time
Ooooo awesome 🙏🏼 hopefully I get around to it soon
I love the 1999 Madison Scouts!

Madison Scouts never fail to inspire/impress. One of my favorite corps ever. We used to go to DCI MIDWEST in Whitewater, Wisconsin at the U.W. Whitewater campus. It was an annual, huge, extended family event that we looked forward to every year.
I agree! I was impressed with what they were doing. Really enjoyed this.
It still exists! It’s now called “The Whitewater Classic”. I went this past summer
2022 Boston crusaders is a awesome watch!
Thank you for that! I greatly appreciate it :)
Interesting how props were not being used back 20 years ago. Drum Corp evolves so much.
I guess scv, bridgemen, and skyriders didn't use props in the 80s then....or many others
crown 95? cadets 95, 96, 99? sky ryders 87? scv 89, 94, 95, etc? velvet knights? interesting indeed. selective memory i see.
Wow Courtney, you absolutely LOVED this one!!! Loved your reaction!
Thank you! Definitely enjoyed doing this. Thank you so much for watching.
Yes.....loved this show.......
You MUST attend a DCI Finals event. I am sure one of your followers could arrange a front row, if not on field vantage point. It's AMAZING!!!!! I LOVE your reactions!
I’m gonna try for 2022!! 😃😃😃
I hope you get there. The energy is amazing, and the sound...indescribable. Thank you for your amazing reactions!!!!
Hey, if you wanna get absolutely blown away, check out Carolina Crown's 2015 show: "Inferno". You wont be disappointed, I promise.
Oh really? Thanks for the recommendation! I will do my research on it.
I see! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Enjoyed this comment. I marched Scouts in 98. Where was the concert you mentioned? Seems I remember one on the west coast.
@@tompeavy8254 The show I went to was in Ypsilanti, Michigan. They (you) were the opening act for the Blue Devils "On Stage" series performance.
Stephen Kinney Ah...yes. We did a lot with BD and SCV in 1998 because we did the west coast tour that year

Also try to fly to the USA next year and go to the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown PA.
If you want any year recommended for the corps I mentioned.....reply...

She need to see ‘95 and ‘97 Scouts! 2 amazing shows that I’m sure she’d enjoy quite a bit.
Thank you for the recommendation! Other people have recommended this as well, so I will look into it more.
1995 Scouts is the show that SO many of us have shown to people that have never seen drum corps before. It’s really exciting, and has loads of raw power! You’ll love it!
One of the best shows ever.
I really liked it myself!
It wasn't even one of the best Scouts shows ever. I can't list them all but their first championship in 1975 and later 1988 championship shows were better. Add to that 1980 and 1995, well, you get the idea.
Hi Courtney love your reviews on dci shows and the Madison Scouts placed 6th with a score of 93.4
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I will look into them.
You've genuinely come to like DCI videos can see it in your expressions and the way you clap
Another one of my absolutely favorite shows 😍
So glad you enjoyed it!
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed :)
I really appreciate it! And it's awesome how you can relate to this. Congrats on the upcoming marriage :)
@@CourtneyCoulston Thanks so much! Looking forward to just getting the whole wedding thing done, enough of the planning and stuff. Aren't you engaged? Date set? Or was that put on the back burner with moving?
