I really appreciate this type of DCI reaction content. So often, people will simply watch a video and be loud about it because they know it will get clicks from their audience. But you are genuinely knowledgeable about music and can provide your perspectives, and you actually make an attempt to legitimately analyze the purpose of the choices made by the design teams. Like any good piece of art, it is meant to be interpreted by the individual, and I am so glad that you take the time to figure out what these shows are about. Your enthusiasm and attentive focus are EXACTLY the reasons why we in the Drum Corps world bring our friends to these shows. Incredible content, as long as you keep reacting to Drum Corps, I will continue to watch and like your stuff.
The 7 spinners represented the 7 deadly sins and sinners are trapped in those sins. Sinnerman character is torn between running away from sin but is pulled back to it. White with red underneath represents both he hood snd bad in man. My son was in the show.
Hi! I was a member of the Mandarins in 2023, I played baritone and I have a GoPro POV on my channel if you wanna give it a watch! I love how you actually took a deep dive into our show and the whole “sin” theme behind it. A couple things I thought might be cool to point out, the idea behind the cages is that they act as walls, trapping us behind them, but then become a fortress to be conquered. Movement 2 starting at 3:20 (which is “Presage” by “Univers Zero”) is about the battle between good and sin. If you look closely you can see how the white team and red team have different motifs in forms and body language when doing their movements on the field. The red team always had this “sinnerman run” that they would do, all hunched over and holding their arm out, while the white team would always look statuesque and holy. A few notable parts of mvmt. 2 are: 3:46 - red makes and X and white makes a cross 4:43 - the red team was told to act as if they are crushing or stomping on the white team as they crumble to the ground 5:46 - the two teams are split by one big central wall, only to be mixed and conquered moments later One big one that a lot of people miss is at 6:41 the cages and the drumline make one giant upside down cross, shortly before everyone “goes mad” and goes all red Movement 3 is like the Joker. Smiling like you’re insane. Creating good trouble and being completely oblivious of any sin, then in movement 4, the ballad, we repent for our sins, 12:55 the walls once again trap us behind them, only to break free again. It’s okay to have some good trouble :) As for why we spun people- I honestly have no idea. Maybe another member can correct me, but I think the design staff literally just was like “F it let’s spin people.” Definitely made for a sick ending though. Mandarins went from 10th place to 6th place in just one year. You should definitely follow them this year, the DCI season is just starting up! Thank you again for watching this. Means a lot to us all in the Mandarins💜💜💜
I am once again asking for your contribution of Carolina Crown 2015: Inferno. For the small cost of witnessing greatness you can make a grown man smile. Thank you
as far as overall impact and flavor, there was a lot of observation on the clear referencing back to 2011 and Between angels and Demons from Cadets, with split colors/sides, etc. Ironically 2011 was the only other time DCI has come to the Univ of Utah stadium.. so it was an amazing closed circle for me ( I saw the 2011 shows also). But this show frankly blew Blue Devils off the planet with excitement, passion , themes, you name it.. Where BD and some other corps pull ahead is in technically demanding arrangements and Guard execution etc. But their programs are becoming notorious for not having any real fire or inspirational effect behind theme. I love my Phantom and Troopers stuff, and hope to see my other favorite SCV return to the glory of Babylon someday, but for a non championship corps this is my favorite single show ever.
Thank you so much for getting to my request!! I am so glad you enjoyed it as much as I do. When I herd this show for the first time in-person me and all of my marching band friends and even our director were speechless afterwards. That hit at 12:52 is my favorite moment in any DCI show ever. Just the sudden shift from slow and peaceful to a massive wall of sound is astounding. It completely made the show for me and put it as my #1 all-time show (even though I'm a Bluecoats fan at heart :) ). If you ever get a chance to see any DCI shows in-person, I would absolutely recommend it, moments like that while amazing on video, are absolutely insane when you're actually there. Keep doing what you're doing, man, love your content! p.s. If you get a chance, take a look at Bluecoats 2022: "Riffs & Revelations" :)
Loved "everyone is 150%" 😆 As a Mandarins alumnus (almost 20 years ago!), I can tell you that's part of what drew me to the group & what keeps me watching them year after year. Every season is different, instructors come and go, but the heart & soul is always there! ❤ Thanks for your support.
Can’t wait for you to check out the 2024 shows they are amazing this year. You definitely should wait till finals which will be in August to see the complete products though
There’s a lot of back story to the Mandarins that made this even better too. They have worked so incredibly hard and made massive strides over the last 10-15 years to go all the way from being a small Open class corps to breaking the Top 5 in World class, and seeing that progression and that climb to reach the incredible level they’re at now makes it even more awesome and inspiring!
THAT WAS EPIC! Up there with the Bluecoats 50th Anniversary Alumni show! WOW! The visual of running from God and begging for forgiveness on Judgment Day...ooooohweeee! And that's actually mild compared to what it could really be like. Great reaction! Great analysis! 💓
I was blessed to see this live on Jul 9 or something live in Salt Lake City, at the 55k Stadium for the University of Utah... noted in American College football as one of the loudest and most intimidating stadiums ( especially for its capacity).. The acoustics of a closed bowl, but open sky just MASSIVELY amazing for this number especially.
@@queijoduke wait I thought the Capital Classic was the Mandarins' home show.... Corps Encore (SL or Ogden ) is hosted by Ascend Performing Arts out of Denver (as is the new Drums West Texas) and if anything would be a home show for The Battalion, but BK is treated as the home team, same thing for Fort Collins)
If your looking to branch out a little bit there is a whole indoor circuit of similar shows called WGI. It’s very similar in that it is a marching art but it is all percussion. I would start on pulse percussion 2017 or Music city Mistique 2017.
Hi Charlie.....reallly enjoy your reaction videos to Drum Corps. You reacted to 2 of my all time favorite drum corps shows - Carolina Crown 2013 and Santa Clara Vanguard 2018(both World Championship Gold medal winners). I was in Westshoremen Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, out of Harrisburg, PA(I didn't learn about drum corps till I was in my 30's and by then 2 old to march DCI). I then went on to teach color guard at the high school level here in the greater Harrisburg, PA region for 15 years). When I marched Westshoremen, our color guard caption head(the one who taught us our work), said an interesting fact that I've not heard you mention in any of your reaction videos, is that when you do a toss with a rifle or a sabre, if you are tossing it correct, you are catching the spinning equiptment at approx. 25 miles per hour. Just thought you'd like an interesting fact!
You may be a student Grashopper but you have graspped the pebble. You are enlightened beyond your years. Another very well done commentary. It sounds like you have a pretty good singing voice too. You pick up exceedingly well in the very technical articulations and chording and I know a STOP.....AGAIN!...is coming.....Though I think a close second for the T-Shirt should be Visually Amazing / Audibly Incredible.......Well done Charlie...Well done!
You should check out "Blast!" It was basically drum and bugle corps (Star of Indiana) that stopped playing the DCI circuit and then made a production length show made for a Broadway stage. It even ended up winning a Tony for Best Special Theatrical Event (for things that weren't musicals or plays)
If you really enjoy the visual aspect of drum corps shows, check out the Cavaliers from the 2000s. No one has replecated that kind of visual design since. They also have amazing music as well. I'd recommend their 2003 show, probably my all-time favorite.
Love your commentary on this show! Spot on, and things I hadn’t considered. I’ll be watching more of your vids! Another point to note is that when the Sinnerman on the prop during Take Me to Church is trying to get his white robe back on, he can’t get it to fit anymore. By the end, they’ve all settled into their humanity, made of both good and evil. So many layers to this show!
I think you should do Bluecoats “Tilt”! To me that is one of the best performances ever!!! When you watched the 50th Alum ceremony, towards the end of the performance you kept repeating the ending, that is part of the Tilt show!!! Gail
This show had the most energy in finals. I went bonkers! You can actually see me in the crowd at the end. What a fantastic production! Video doesn’t do the Hosier bit justice.
Love this show thanks for reviewing it. The sounds and visuals are so theatrical and powerful! If you haven’t watched Carolina Crown 2013 - E=MC2 I highly suggest it. The only corps to earn a perfect brass caption. It’s a sound like no other. Also Bluecoats 2014 and 2019. “Again” another great review of a new favorite of mine.
I feel like we should mix it up a bit and react to the oldies of drum corps since there's almost exclusively the Lucas Oil era of shows so far. I highly recommend Madison Scouts 1988 - Malaguena! There is a very high quality video by Drum Corps Archive here on youtube and i think the only place i've found that actually has the entire show and not just the final 4-5 minutes or so. It's so full of blast your face off "park and barks" as we like to call em and it's just such an insane display of musicianship, especially from the soloists.
sorry if you're flooded with requests but seeing you really try to dig into this show made me really want for you to watch tempest blue the 2022 blue devils show. def hated by many but I thought the show design was sick and it was fun seeing how they represented blue and told it's story. I recommend the victors run ver as I love seeing performers be so happy and care more about emotion than making the cleanest show ever.
Yooooooo You’ve got to watch Carolina Crowns 2015 Inferno and 2018 Beast. Idk what I got to pay but I guarantee those shows are gonna send you to the stratosphere. 😅
Loving this Journey for you!!! I know you might get a million requests but I'd like you to go back in time for a bit!! Phantom Regiment 1993....if you can find it :)

I know a guy who can get some tickets for him

THe last 4 years the Mandarins have become the High Art rep of DCI. This is the most memorable show of 2023. I love the reaction and analysis.
10:08 I love the guys hanging upside down while playing, such a unique flex
