  • Magnesium is a critical mineral for health, yet many people are deficient. This DIY tallow magnesium lotion is a great option for boosting magnesium levels.
    See the full printable recipe in our blog post: fromscratchfar...
    Video on how to render tallow so that it is odorless: fromscratchfar...
    Ingredients:
    Yield 1.5 cups
    ½ cup water
    ½ cup magnesium flakes - amzn.to/3LzkLhh
    ½ cup tallow
    3 tbsp olive oil (or avocado oil)
    1 tbsp cocoa butter (or shea butter) - amzn.to/3IZ4IYh
    1 tbsp beeswax - amzn.to/3j0HoyJ
    10 or more drops of essential oils (optional)
    Directions:
    1. Heat ½ cup of water to just before boiling.
    2. Stir ½ cup of magnesium flakes into the hot water until the magnesium flakes are completely dissolved.
    3. Add tallow, oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax to a heat safe glass container
    4. Add water to a pot and heat on stove. Place a rag or towel at the bottom of the pot and add your container of tallow and other ingredients on top of the rag.
    5. Heat up the water on medium heat on stove to heat up tallow mixture until everything is completely melted.
    6. Once melted, remove from heat.
    7. Using an immersion blender, blend the tallow mixture while slowly pouring the magnesium water into the tallow mixture.
    8. Blend until the magnesium solution is completely blended in, a lotion is formed, and desired consistency is reached.
    9. Pour into jars.

    I made magnesium lotion in 20 minutes last night at midnight. It was THAT easy! Wow!!! Thank you so much for this video.
    I changed it slightly - and even as a literal first time beginner.... it still made a FANTASTIC balm!
    Here's what I did/used. I'm so very happy with the result and so is my husband!
    I used 1/2 cup of my lavender magnesium oil
    1/2 cup of tallow
    2 tbsp of avocado oil
    1.5 tbsp of beeswax
    About 20 drops of mint essential oil
    I followed the same steps you did and ended up with a balm that feels VERY high-end and absolutely luxurious. THANK YOU, again for making this video - without your little lesson on RUclips, I would never have thought to do this. The reason I added a little extra wax is because I don't have shea or cocoa butter on-hand, and my ingredients are a little runny. I thought the little extra beeswax would offset the runny oil and tallow, and set up nicely. I now have a very creamy balm which is FINE for us. LOL!
    To make the lavender magnesium oil: I combined the mag. flakes (I have the same brand of flakes that you do) into my water and let them dissolve. I made a quart of oil. While the oil was still very hot, I added 1/4 cup of organic dried lavender flowers to it and let it steep (like tea) for about 20 minutes. When the mixture was significantly cooled, I strained the flowers out of the oil and put the lavender scented magnesium oil back into the clean mason jar. It's been stored for a couple months in my apothecary cabinet away from the light and heat to keep the herbal properties of the lavender protected from breaking down in the light. It still smells soooo lovely. It retained its relaxing scent so nicely. Yay!

    I just made this recipe. I didn’t think to look in the description at why beeswax isn’t used 😣
    I blended the crap out of it tho so hopefully it stays together.
    Also, I had Shea butter on hand not cocoa butter. I will NOT be making that mistake again. I hope Cocoa butter smells better than Shea. I had to use a ton of essential oil to try and mask the off putting smell Shea butter has and it barely made a difference!😖
    I will never again use Shea butter for my hygiene products. I just purchased some organic Cocoa butter and the Candelilla wax so I will probably make a 2nd batch using that.
    Other than that I have subscribed to this channel! I can’t wait to explore more homemade recipes! Thank you! ❤️

    Hi, Thank you for your recipes! I made this one, I'll tell you what I screwed up, I used bees wax, did not do a double boiler type of method but warmed slowly in a sauce pan. It looked good when I was done, well blended, however it has separated quite badly, not just a few "sweat" drops on top. I'm sure it will be fine, I'm still using it. but its not pretty :-() what did, or didn't I do wrong, can i do anything to salvage it? The other thing I did was put the lid on before it was completely cooled...

      One thing you can do is use the lotion from the pot straight away. Once you've finished jarring up your lotion just start applying what's left in the pot on yourself!! This will use what's left and then the pot is easier to clean. after that good hot water and soap will do the rest.

    I’ve been looking at making a tallow lotion but keep seeing the need to use a preservative with the addition of water. I didn’t notice you did-is there a reason why not? Is it really not that necessary or is this just something you wouldn’t “risk” giving to others/need to keep an eye on it etc.

      This is a good question! I’ve never had an issue with mold forming but overtime the magnesium oil does seep out. It’s been fine for us and we still use it but reworking this recipe is on my to do list! Thanks for watching!

      I can tell you it's the water that's causing the mold. Oil or tallow does not mix with water.

      Add a preservative, where there is water there is life. And it may not be life (mold, bacteria, etc.) that you want to put on yourself and your children.

      I'm not familiar with illipe butter. Shea butter would be a good substitute.

    The water in mine keeps separating from the oil 😢 cannot get this to work. I think the key is to have the immersion blender

      Sorry that happened! If I did it in our Vitamix blender, I'd do in on a very low speed. I hope this helps!

    I’ve been trying to figure out if I actually need an emulsifier and preservative to make lotion I can sell. I see you don’t use either. Does your lotion stay together well ?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  2 года назад +1

      Yes! The lotion stays together perfectly. We are a couple of months in from when we made it last and it’s still smooth and creamy!

      @@FromScratchFarmstead awesome ! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe and the information about magnesium ! I grow lavender for hydrosol and E.O and I can’t wait to pair it with tallow and make a lotion 🦋🤲🏻✨

    What is the purpose of the bees wax? Obviously it can't get into the skin. Why use it? Just trying to understand.

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Год назад +1

      The texture but in our updated video/recipe we switched to using candelilla wax that we've found works better at keeping the lotion together without any separation.

    I have a question, water and oil don't mix. So when you put the flakes into water and then mix, it isn't soluble. So how does that work?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Год назад

      The magnesium flakes do dissolve in the water. We also have an updated video/recipe for this magnesium lotion!

    Hey :) Just FYI with all the health stuff you're working on, I learned from people like Kori Meloy that iron is a huge issue. Too much iron. We are lied to that we are iron deficient. Most of us are iron toxic. The iron is hiding in our tissue which does not get tested for. So using iron pans is not good. Had to swap all mine out. Thanks!

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment! And yes, I’ve been learning about iron overload as well. We monitor our mineral levels with htma’s and bloodwork to make sure things stay in balance. This is definitely important to keep in mind though!! Thanks for watching :)

      If your cast iron pans are seasoned, the food isn’t touching any iron.

    you are using water- why aren't you also using a preservative? (there are also vegan preservatives if you don't want to use the broad spectrum varieties) - water harbours bacteria

      From my understanding the magnesium chloride acts similarly to the way salt does and acts as a natural preservative making it not necessary for the recipe specifically (would be necessary for most other lotions). Thanks for watching!

      Good question! I’m still using some that I made in February and it keeps just fine. The only thing you will likely notice is that overtime a small amount of the magnesium water will separate out leaving some droplets at the top. I just mix it in with my finger and use. I’d say it would be good at least 6 months-1 year. Thanks for watching!!
