    Absolute ripper! Not the biggest toughest truck around but gets the job done. Very similar to my parents navara they brought new in 2003 similar modifications too and took my siblings and I all over Australia without any issues. That’s how I got into 4wdriving (that and good old milo and pats Suzuki) I’ve now got a hzj105 which I think is the ultimate tough tourer for my missus, our two boys and I. My parents have since upgraded to a 2015 dmax which they’ve set up very comfortable and capable for 4wdriving and travelling. Absolutely love watching these older episodes (even though I’ve still got most of them on DVD)

    After many years of watching heaps of 4wd stuff I find myself back where it all started, watching Roothy. Thanks mate your always a pleasure to watch even if you do drive a Toyota haha.

    What you need and why you need it depends on where you intend going and how extreme the terrain is you wish to traverse . I see people everyday driving 80 - 100 -105 series cruisers and patrols as daily drivers i.e. commuters and others towing caravans with sedans and station wagons .
    If you're weekend camping you don't need a full time touring rig .

    I also have a 2013 D22 Navara all the normal mods except for the locker, I’m happy with my 4wd it’s got plenty of grunt, glides over the sand like it was meant to be there, happy with my buy

    From the factory most four wheel drives are more capable than the driver behind the wheel, time spent learning how to get the best line and wheel placements will be time well spent then start modifying any shortcomings

    Haha John, just looking in the background and wondering if you still had the willys and realised I also have an FJ Cruiser (not an oldie like yours though) an old EJ Holden, TJ Wrangler and a Harley and the car hoist is next on my list.... oh, and a greying beard as well.... Bet you didn't ever own a Lada Niva though ( I was only 20 ok!!!)

    • @JOHNROOTHROOTHY
      @JOHNROOTHROOTHY  3 года назад +1

      No, but I borrowed a couple of Ladas in the day and loved them for simplicity and ability. Wish I had one now!

    Only thing that made me shake my head was the tyre shine 🤣 pointless for a 4x4 and stains the crap out the rubber

    Can you start ‘4WD ACTION’ up again, now the name isn’t being used?

    • @brockeighty
      @brockeighty 3 года назад

      4wd super centre own the name now. Don’t know what the go was but they ended up with it when 4wd247 started

    • @JOHNROOTHROOTHY
      @JOHNROOTHROOTHY  3 года назад +5

      4WD Action was started and owned by the same team who developed the SupaCentres - so they not only spread the word about 4wd-ing lifestyle, they made it cheap enough for everybody to afford.

    mhm... so he added double battery system, rear locker, additional lights, a winch, undercar protection, 20mm wheel extention, custom rock sliders, 2 inch suspension lift, snorkel, extra rear bar for protection and recovery point access, roof rack, awning, an air compressor and on top the vehicle is chipped.
    What on earth is BASIC about that setup?? This is NOT what you need for a standard family 4wd trip in'n'out of most national parks and enjoy beautiful Australia.
    The real everyday family dad basic 4wd vehicle needs:
    - a fridge (check, whatever size fits your needs)
    - an air compressor (check)
    - a second battery for the fridge, some kind of dual battery system
    - tyre kit (check)
    - SPARE tyre (have I missed that in the video?)
    - radio comm (check)
    - some sun protection (simple: tarp, fancy: fixed awning)
    - snorkel (check)
    - maxtracks recovery tracks and shovel ^^
    Basic goodies, if desired:
    - undercar protection (not even clear if thats necessary. Drive thoughtfully and decide carefully where you want to bring you kids...we're talking basic setup, no Roothy or Ronny Dahl requirements)
    - additional lights (check)
    Great, but nowhere near BASIC, are:
    - winch (did I mention: watch where you're going with your kids? Consider a two vehicle trip if you desire to go winchy places...)
    - suspension lift
    - wheel extension
    - rear locker
    - front/rear bar
    - rock sliders
    - and if you really feel like draining your engine: well, go and get that chipping. And add extra cooling. Otherwise get a larger engine...

    • @JOHNROOTHROOTHY
      @JOHNROOTHROOTHY  3 года назад

      If you'd ever been stuck - not by design - with your family you'd appreciate a winch!!! Stuck isn't something you can always plan.
