Spot on - my D3100 is now functional again after a 30s effort. I had just filled in Nikon's form and was just on the verge of sending my camera body to Nikon for analysis, repair, bureaucracy and cost. Now nothing of that is needed - thank you so much! Happy happy!!! :)
i logged in just to say THIS WORKED!!! on my Nikon D750 which i am very nostalgic about as well, i had the same exact issue the same exact stuck mirror problem and this worked for me thank you so much, the repair shop was quoting me 400$ to fix the entire mirror system. I used my plastic little pry tool that i use for phone repairs and it worked fine. i slipped it under the stuck mirror and gave it a little nudge upward and it freed. after each attempt i pressed the shoot button again just to make sure i wasn't overworking the mirror. got it on the 3rd try or so. THANK YOU SO MUCH
THANKS! Currently at the start of my holiday and dropped my D5100 in the carpark before a 3hr wildlife cruise. I gave up hope, but just found your video and it’s working again. Just in time for a beautiful mountain hike in the morning.
You just saved me potentially hundreds to maybe thousands of dollars on my D750. Thank-you so much for this. My situation and fix was identical to yours. Thank-you so much again!!
MY HERO!!! I have the same camera you do and don’t want to part with it. I did the same exact thing you did, dropped my camera bag with an 18-270mm Tamron Lens on it. I kept getting a “Error -Press shutter release button again” message. When looking through the view finder I got not totally dark there were shadows, I was sick. I could hear the motor although very weak. I was about to give up, started looking for used D5100’s on Ebay then I literally tripped into your vid this morning, and BINGO, your vid was way more detailed than other vids I watched. My entire mirror was locked down by that little “metal round Node”, I followed your instructions, the mirror came away from the node but my mirror still didn’t release up, so I used my plastic laptop sponger tool to help it flip all the way up and now IT WORKS!! Woo-hoo Im back taking great pics with my D5100. I just can’t THANK YOU enough!!! 👏👍🍻🎉 The Nikon D5100 ROCKS and so do YOU!
What you are calling a "shutter" is not the shutter. What you repaired was the mirror. The shutter is behind the mirror and looks nothing like the mirror. I don't know about Nikons but on Canons you pretty much have to disassemble the whole camera just to get to the shutters. It's very time-consuming.
Very glad you got yours working. I recently purchased a gem on ebay also... the Canon 1DS from 2001, to add to my collection. It arrived looking stunning, like brand new. But the mirror mechanism is not functioning. Unlike your solution, this appears to be more complicated, but glad I watched your video. Happy shooting.
Wow, you did a very good job with fixing the camera on your own. This tells me that the repair people are getting very lazy and rather make a sale than to fix a good product.
I can take photos using the simple visor no problem, my problem is when I want to take videos and i have to use the digital screen, there is a mechanism sound and occurs the problem, I can fix it like that you say but after some time the problem comeback so I would like fix it permanently or at least that it last more time operating good
Good fix and good news. Congrats on taking the technical issue into your own hands to deliver a remedy. When there is nothing to lose, as the "tech" summarized, go for it and perhaps, beat the odds. The worst is resorting to replacing it if you can't fix it... My lens is permanently jammed into the camera body. It fell of tripod and smashed onto rocks. I'm goin to take the face apart. It is a grey market, so Nikon will not look at it, anyway...
This video does not discuss a shutter problem. It discusses a mirror problem The shutter contains a curtain-like opening/closing mechanism, located behind the mirror. When the mirror is locked upward in live view, and the shutter speed is set to something your mind can track, e.g., 1 second, you can see the shutter curtain open and close when you press the shutter button. Anyway, if you're looking for a shutter-problem solution (like me), this is not the right video..
I have a nikon d5100 and when I put the modes into continuous shooting it's not taking fast photos like what you showd it's taking 1 photo per second does anybody have any idea on how to fix it
Im a computer repair tech, among many many other things. It pisses me off to no end when people say that kind when repair places say that shit to people. Just do the freakin right thing man and at the very least give a diagnosis, and a quote! Something silly like this I would have charged you maybe 20$ for. Thats only if I was hurting for it. Otherwise I would have not charged anything
the old cameras DSR have a mirror you look through the viewfinder and looked in the mirror and when it takes a picture it flashes the mirror all the way and there's a sensor behind well most people you don't need the stupid mirror you just grab some pliers and rip that sucker out. and then it says the sensor and you just point it in the general direction or you can get a live view from the LCD and then you take a picture that way
I can't really subscribe to someone who has only ever posted one video, but I've liked it....are you still out there damsel? Your video has clearly helped a lot of people even though you fixed the mirror not the shutter. Dropping any form of SLR (digital or film) generally results in a mirror lock up or lock down. Its surprising how many folk think this is a camera broken....certain folk in 'the know' may tell you to its beyond repair, take your camera as scrap, perform your fix, and then sell the camera....I've seen old film cameras being sold for next to nothing at car boot sales because the owner didn't know how to fix the mirror. I think your video is an important one and you shouldn't be embarrassed by not knowing the technical details of a camera. The people who really should know better are the two camera stores you went to......either they were 'pulling a fast one' on you, or their staff need some rudimentary re-training...as you have shown it really is a 2 minute fix for a very common fault after dropping a camera....THEY should have known this. Come back and post, tell us what you take pictures of and why your camera is so important to you.
That's not the shutter, if it were the shutter the viewfinder would have never been obstructed. The shutter is positioned behind the mirror, which is easily identified as the mirror since its a fucking mirror.
probably $200 to do that repair is what you mean to say right ? why would they advertise doing repairs if its set lower then the 1st time for them. the other story is its a really cheap fix and whatever place does that type of stuff does not stay open or something. they would look at the youtube and do the screw driver for you. then probably cheap but its them and they are mostly always gone.
It’s great but I have the same camera with the same story but what I found out was for my camera I just took off the lens and shook it hard it it was fine Looked better than before 😂😂😂
I wander if repair store would have ripped you off if that's all they had to do . I'm betting 200 bucks for 2 minutes work . Sorry , had few experiences of almost getting ripped off .

Wow! Had a similar issue on my camera. I thought it was hopeless until I came along with your video. Its a big help. Thank you!
Don't you just love it when a scary situation has an easy fix...thanks for a very valuable share!

YOU ARE AWESOME!!! THIS FIXED MY D7200 DOING THIS AND ONLY 2 HOURS BEFORE NEEDING IT FOR A HS GRAD EVENT! THANK YOU...
Absolutely perfect! I had this EXACT issue and I cant thank you enough for helping me !!!! God bless you and have a great day!
Just cleared out my jammed mirror on my d5100 after watching your video. Worked like a charm, thanks!!!!!
I'd just like to thank you so much for helping me fix my 5100! You absolutely saved the day!

For girls this things can be more confusing :)

Same sentimental problem with me and my Nikon D3200. I didn't drop it but the mirror is stuck. Thank you for sharing your feelings.

Youve just saved me £700 thank you so much

Thank you so much for showing that this is possible without spending $$$$ and/or breaking camera more.
Thank you very much! We managed to solve the problem in our d5100..and the holiday is definitly safe!!
Super awesome! glad you had it in you NOT to give up! Happy that you still have your camera and its working ; )
Tks for the video. you saved me lots of money 💰..
whoever you are, where ever you live, thank you soo much, i have the EXACT same problem with my nikon d5100
thank you so much! how can we send you some kind of payment?
That's not a shutter but only the mirror. This tutorial can help but if a proper shutter malfunction occurs this won't help.
Okay i have a question my shutter is stuck like yours but when I did this and my whole shutter flips straight up it wont stay in place like your did
thank you so much. This was the exact same problem with my D3100!

Fixed my D3s ! Thank you for the lesson. Cheers

My camera says I need a lens in it and won't work without. How do I change it so I can test it without the lens in it?
I enjoyed your video, your resourcefulness and mostly your positive tone and respect for your audience.
Thank you for saving my cameras...So glad I came across your post.

I belief thats mirror which is stuck and shutter is black "blinds" front of sensor.

You're video was very helpful.. it worked out for me!!
you did well!! great content and knowledge too
Thank you so so very much! This helped allot!
Thank you so much... it worked 👍🏻
Well done. Will try it on my Pentax K3 now.
I have a nikon d500 and the shutter is stuck up, not down like that
I remember the time when we had a panic my juniors DSLR also got stuck we were like oh shoot halp
MEDDIICCCCCC!
during sports day
If only life was like that.......
Looks like mirror fix, not a shutter fix. Am I missing something?
I was so expecting the hammer to come out
2:30 It should Ideally lift up all the way on both sides. LOL

It’s a mirror problem vs shutter.
I’ve tried a dozen times and no success! Same error message :(
Congratulations in fixing your camera , isn’t it brilliant when things go right 😊👍🏻
mirror is stuck..shutter is behind the mirror
good advice to remember
Thats a mirror issue. Not the shutter.
The mirror was stuck, you could correct maybe the title : how to unblock dslr mirror :) You have a nice voice !

Looked better than before 😂😂😂
My camera is 13 years old. God forbid something break. I am broke and theres no buying another.
Thank You!
most people take the mirror out
Omg thank you❤️
Thank you for the tip.
I wander if repair store would have ripped you off if that's all they had to do . I'm betting 200 bucks for 2 minutes work . Sorry , had few experiences of almost getting ripped off .
Thank you!!!!
Thats a stuck mirror not a stuck shutter
Very good, Nice video, thanks.
Well done.
