Great Tutorial man, Appreciate what you’ve done. My transmission went bad today and now watching this makes me have someone else do the job for me instead 😂
Thanks! That always means a lot to me. Haha hey it’s not for everyone we all got to know when to stop before we make it worse. Best of luck. Thanks for watching!
I was looking for a list of tools i need for the job. Thank you for adding those in during your videos. I have to travel with my tools to a junkyard and it helps to know what ones ill need
Great job...very straight forward...i'm pulling a motor on mine...don't know why folks don't just pull both motor and engine out, together...much easier than trying to fight to squeeze out the engine from the tranny and removing all air compressor
Thanks! I’m glad I was able to help. Ya sometimes it’s easier to pull motor and trans but with this car I feel it’s easier to just pull the transmission. Best of luck. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
For the cv axles, on the cx-7, I found you can loosen the brake hose mount off the strut, and remove the 2 strut bolts to knuckle, and the axle comes out without touching the ball joints or tie rods. Also you can just wack the axle out instead of the press. But whats in the video works too. But good video.
Ya usually I take the strut off 90% of the time. But, with this car it doesn’t have two bolts holding it. Instead it’s a pinch bolt then you have to smack it down. So I just figured it would be easier to remove the lower ball joint. But for getting that cv axle out when they’re seized like that this is about the only way I can get them out. It’s always fords and Mazdas. But not all fords and Mazdas haha. Anyways thanks for watching!
Thank you for the install vid as I will be using this as a reference when installing mine. Would you be able to tell me where there is a transmission serial/identifier number on the transmission? I'm looking into purchasing a used transmission and I want to make sure I get the correct one. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 Sport hatchback 2.5L.
I’m glad it will be able to help! Off hand I’m not real sure. but, wherever you get it from it’ll tell you if it fits your car. Usually they’ll ask for your vin or engine size. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
thanks for your very straightforward and absolutely helpful walkthrough man. saved my life. im writing this swapping transmission in my dominos parking lot. im a driver
@@JunkyardJunkie no problem man, first time doing something this big, but after a week, its all said in done. there are a couple videos out here with this model mazda, but ur thorough, easy to understand steps is unmatched. you rock
Thanks! That does mean a lot to me. I’m glad you got it swapped out I know it can be a real pain especially where you had it haha. But ya there’s usually always going to be other videos out there but I didn’t really see them and I try my best to make as clear as possible and easy to follow. I’ll have to upgrade my GoPro for when I do stuff like this for even better quality. Have a good one. Thanks for watching!
@@opengamingfinesse Hey man my synchros are going on my mps, like yourself, I’ve never done a job anywhere near this big but I’m going to have a crack. Do you have any tips for me? How long did it take you to get the job done?
Got an 2004 Mazda 3 up to the stage of the 21mm on the crank and the 14mm inside the gearbox where starter motor was but on the 04 there’s no room to even get onto the 14mm inside, are these needing to come off and any tips
So did you remove the little rubber piece that I showed in video one? Because sometimes they blend in well and you might think it’s a part of the transmission. But once you pull that rubber piece out you should be able to have plenty of room to get to the bolts then. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
How many hours in total did it take you? I am having my 2010 Mazda3 AT being replaced and man labor is so high I had shops say 1600$ but I found one or two who said 700-900$
So book time 5.6 hours so 700-900 is a very fair price. The 1600$ price is a bit much that’s probably they’re I don’t want to do it price but will for the right amount. As for how long it took me I was recording so all my videos take me hours longer than normal but without recording I can get it out and in in about 3 and half hours give or take. But remember book time is average and a good mechanic shouldn’t be punished for be able to work faster. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
I'm installing the new transmission. The crank no longer free spins. I'm assuming I need to re separate and make space between my flywheel and torque converter to get it spinning again
You did a great job, with the video and the car. Good timing. Mine is slipping in reverse and now upshifting hard with some slip and occasional rough downshifting. Should I even bother trying to replace all 9 quarts of fluid and seeing if that changes anything? Mine is pretty dark. I'm expecting I'll have to toss in a known-good trans.
Thanks! That always means a lot to see I can help. I hate that for you but it happens these cars are known for the tcm (transmission control module) going bad too. But yours sounds like the transmission itself most likely. So at least you’ll have a great way to follow along. No I wouldn’t recommend it. if the fluid is pretty dark already and it’s already slipping when you let the fluid flow out it will remove floating clutch material from the clutch packs. Usually if it gets to the point yours is at and you change the fluid usually it won’t even go into any gears afterwards. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@JunkyardJunkie Thanks for the reply! My 3 has no check engine light or transmission light on. Any idea if the TCM will detect faults and NOT illuminate the AT light? I decided to drain some fluid out of the pan to get a good look at it, I just put it back in afterwards. It sure does look sparkly. 😩
Ya the tcm will usually pop A/T light. Ya if you see sparkles that’s your clutch packs unfortunately. Hopefully this video will help you out and save you a ton. Good luck!
Just want to thank you. I finally replaced my trans. Seeing your video made me feel more comfortable tackling it myself, I appreciate it! No more hard shifts, slipping, and most recently terrible noise. I found broken teeth in the differential and debris throughout the trans. Junkyard trans is in and working great! Thanks again!!
I’m not sure I know the 2004-2013 are the same. But, I don’t think they use the same in the newer models. You can always call the dealership parts department to verify though. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
It would only be hanging from one motor mount so I would use it. You can get them for a little over 100$. if not, I would bare minimum use a jack with a block of wood for support. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I have a 04 Mazda 3 hatch with the 2.3L and it’s automatic. I’m losing my mind because my car is completely unresponsive and does not shift into drive whatsoever. I’ve read it can be a bad TCM but I kid you not I can not for the life of me find it underneath the battery box or anywhere near the firewall. I had the AT and check engine light on but my fluid was clean. There wasn’t any slipping it just crawled to a stop like each gear went out and now it can’t shift up whatsoever leading me to believe it’s the tcm but it doesn’t even seem a tcm is present on my vehicle. I’ve looked everywhere in that corner of my compartment and I don’t see a wire clip or the box anywhere
It could be the tcm. it is a known issue with these cars. The original place is under the battery box tucked under the actual transmission mount. You’ll see a big connector going to it, just kind of hiding under there. But a lot of people move them to help that heat cycle mitigation. If it’s been moved check the most common place which is zip tied to the brake lines under or left of the brake fluid reservoir. I hope this helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!
In the first video I show it at the very end. In the part 2 I show you removing them at 14:30. It’ll be behind your starter. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
I used Milwaukee 1/2 impact for some of it. But mainly just used the Milwaukee 3/8 electric ratchet. For torque specs in the video i put on screen what you need for the main connecting bolts. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
You’re right. usually just a hammer and punch or air hammer will knock it out. But, with these fords and Mazdas I usually have to go to the puller you see me use in the video. Thanks for watching!

I’ll do my best to help you. So it feels like it’s going to rip in half how so? Any other noises, sensations or any other description you can give to help me think of what might be going on? One thing I would say is check your mounts ( I have videos on all three). if your mount is not on or broken it could give you a feeling somethings loose in a way.
