Grand Okinawa Food Tour

- This is the GRAND OKINAWA FOOD TOUR! I will show you all the great food that Okinawa has to offer, everything from Okinawa Soba to Rafute, but you will also see obscure dishes like Okinawan goat soup and goat sashimi.
I went at to Okinawa at the end of November and the weather was still fantastic. An average of 22°C to 25°C during the day with a water temperature of 26°C. Warm enough to go snorkeling for hours! And definitely the right temperature to get stuffed with good food on Okinawa.
The main dishes that you will see in this video:
Goat Soup
Recently goat soup has seen a renaissance on Okinawa, although even some locals don't really like the taste and smell of it. And trust me: That stuff SMELLS! To get rid of that smell, oftentimes yomogi (Artemisia princeps) is added to the soup. This is also true for the goat soup in the video. To make a long story short, if you like lamb, you should also give this soup a try!
Goat sashimi:
I did not even know that you can eat goat raw. Apparently you can. That does not mean that you should. But you can get goat sashimi at many places that sell the more popular goat soup.
Okinawa Soba:
Looks similar to ramen, but has a completely different flavor profile. The so called soba noodles have nothing to do with the buckwheat soba from the Japanese mainland. Okinawa soba are made from wheat and are served in a pork broth, flavored with konbu and katsuboshi.
Wagyu Soup:
Similar to the goat soup, the base soup is very hearty and a tad sour, probably from vinegar. You will find all kind of cuts in this soup, from lean to fatty, from skin to offal, it is all in there. You definitely have a "gutsy" flavor in the soup, but it is not too bad. No comparison to the goat soup. If you are not a fan of goat, this is the way to go!

Okinawa Tonkotsu Ramen:
I made a full video about the fantastic tonkotsu ramen that you can get on Okinawa. You can find the video here:

If you want to eat like the locals, the First Makishi Public Market in Naha is an absolute must visit. A bit away from the main tourist street called Kokusai Dori, you will find all the popular Okinawan dishes in their best form. There is almost nothing you cannot get here (maybe except goat soup).

So I am a bit at a crossroads: Would you like to see more videos like this one or do you prefer videos about one specific place or ramen restaurant? I am still thinking on what I should focus. Let me know in the comments!
I think having a good mix is best!
Andy San thank you for your feedback!

But muh 70% sweet potatoes my vegan dreams are shattered lol.
bobmonk388 what are you talking about?
Lol just vegans bang on about the Okinawa diet being all sweet potatoes as I already knew they prize pork and their pork is special great vid I enjoyed watching.
bobmonk388 RIP vegan propaganda
ngon qua
I enjoy these kinds of videos. "Real-world visiting" kind of stuff, trying the local fare. One constructive criticism: Your music selection is a little over-powering imho. It would be cool to just be able to sometimes only hear the sounds of where you are. I'm not saying the music is bad or anything either, just over-loud sometimes and you could scale it back to zero in certain places just for the sake of ambiance. Thanks for sharing!
David Smith thanks for the feedback! I’m going to do more shots with less music in the future when I use better mics. It covers my current shitty mic situation a bit :)
@@NamaJapan I felt the same, I like the music but it felt a bit to loud at some times. It was hard to understand what you are saying at some points.
What restaurant had that soba by where you had the Wagyu? I just moved on island 2.5 weeks ago. We went up to the Cherry Blossom Festival yesterday in Nago. Need to find that soba!
きばがみよみ there’s a link in the description, it was near Nago in the North.
@@NamaJapan found it in the Wagyu soup link! Thanks for the tip. Will definitely have to stop by next time we are up in that area. Went to the restaurants website and they have lots of things that sound good.
please you are make on veg food ki uper video make karo thanks
your video very good
You would like to see a video about vegetarian food?
Are you living in Japan? I watched some of your videos and saw you driving around in your own car. I am also a food lover and want to travel around on my vacation. Do you really need some special paper from the embassy to rent a car?
Cool videos by the way. I am excited already, will be there from December to mid January.
Till now, the best Ramen I ever had was a small Restaurant in Sapporo. Really nice City (I love it much more than Tokyo)
Xander Reconquista I am living in Japan and recently got my Japanese drivers license. But an international license is enough to rent a car.
ソーキそば、ゴーヤチャンプル、島らっきょう、ラフテーがあれば、後は何もいらない。
もちろん、忘れちゃいけない泡盛とOrionビールもね。
ORIONは最高だよ!
Not quite what we were told about the blue zones the Okinawa supposed to be mostly vegan and vegetarian and sweet potato..?
lol well not really, but be aware that I was not really showing any home cooking
hello mon an ngon
Where's the Orion Beer?
They were had once the driving of the day was done. Can't drink and drive!
And they said okinawans are vegans
Daniel Yang who said that? Pork, fish and eggs are staples of the Okinawan cuisine. I would be really surprised that anyone could come to that conclusion.
@@NamaJapan vegan propaganda. They said okinawans rarely eat meat, only on special occasions
Daniel Yang that would still not make them vegans. I don’t think being vegan is a concept that really exists in Japan as a whole.
Vegan pseudo garbage studies, I don't even need to read them. Just look at those vegan youtubers - chronic illnesses and dementia in their 20s. They have 10 cuts in each sentence.
Nama Japan , Caleb is right. I was just reading an article about why Okinawans live so long and they mentioned they eat mostly fruits and veggies, less rice than tradition Japanese and instead eat sweet potato, also the article said they eat very little meat (pork, beef, chicken) and eat mostly fish. This is now the third video I’ve watch on Okinawa cuisine and I am calling the article bs. Here in America there is a lot of propeganda around what we eat especially meat. Vegan propagandists tend to bring up countries with long life expectancies and link them to eating less meat but most of it isn’t true and these journalists probably have never been to any of these countries to know what the true locals eat. Good video.
よくたべれましたね。www
Follow share me f you good island nice food
The food looks great but most of the disturbing music is annoying.
Thanks for the feedback.
Compared to the mainland, Okinawa food sucks!!!
This is Americanized nonsense.
Schpankme Verimuch that’s funny, because I’m not American.
I have literally no idea what you are talking about. I am just showing some food in my video and that surely has nothing to do with conspiracy theories.
@@NamaJapan
Which part was the Conspiracy?
Is that your magic word to make reality go away?
I still have no idea what you are talking about in the first place. What part of me showing food from Okinawa did upset you? Was it the goat soup? I bet it was the goat soup.
@@NamaJapan
The Okinawan's used to be the LONGEST LIVED people on the face of the Earth; eating less than 2% animal products. What changed?
