As a life long vegetarian (not vegan) I've eaten a LOT of vegetable burgers, some good, some not so good and some really good ones, I'll have to agree that as far as commercially available to the general public options, the Whopper is by far the best. As someone that's been vegan for years, these burger options are all a bit of a gamble. Many times they arrive with meat traces on the patty, or the bun itself. I think it's targeting omnivores looking to eat a little less meat.

0:13 hahaha my friend will give you a proper lecture if she heard you saying that irl. One of her biggest disappointments is when we go to a vegan place and they offer overpriced green salads. Yes, there are a lot of vegans that are into the health scene but in my experience the majority is vegan because of moral consideration such as animal welfare, Earth preservation, etc. Making sure all types of food and cuisine without exception are easily available in a vegan format is the main way those goals can be met (i.e. minimising the cognitive dissonance that comes from the completely valid mindset of “I want to eat what I like / what I’ve grown up with / what represents my cultural belonging” but do so in a way that is not harmful to others, to animals and to our planet)
When I remember "imitation" meatfor vegan I remember tempeh, a food ingredient made from soybeans. It's one of the foods that comes from Indonesia but I saw in some vlogs which showed that in England there were many who made tempeh and sold it. Maybe you two are interested in trying fried tempeh.

As a vegan it's pretty annoying seeing how ppl have such low expectations of vegan food. They automatically think it tastes trash or something... These days vegan alternatives have improved drastically and there is so much to choose from. I hope ppl would just try them without any expectations
There is plenty of good vegan food. But dairy vegan alternatives are usually terrible and vegan cheeses are at best inoffensive in most cases (said as someone who can't tolerate lactose so I've tried a lot of them and they are absolutely nowhere near actual cheese and in a lot of cases are just horrible). The pea protein based meat substitutes are significantly better than soy based ones.
You're right, they've greatly improved. I for one grew up with tofu being like the main glorified vegan option so I think that alone scared many away. Since then I've changed to oat milk just because flat out it tastes better than cow milk. The vegan cheese I've tried has been passable, still has a bit of an aftertaste not quite like the real thing. I've tried impossible bugers, vegan chorizo, and chicken strips all of which surprised me at how much like the real thing they were. (Even my bf was fooled by the pea protein based chorizo and enjoyed it) In that regard you are 100% right. However, there is still the problem of availability. You go to big cities and I bet you will have an easier time finding that stuff in store... dairy nation in the midwest however... there's like 1 dairy alternative for cheese, butter, cream cheese, each... Thankfully milk alternatives at least are becoming more readily available.
I think it's also that a lot of people don't realize that a huge amount of food we eat is vegan by nature. They hear "vegan" and assume you have to do some weird food wizardry to make the food. It also doesn't help that a lot of vegan people are so militant about it.
When i see a new thumbnail video on my front page i feel happy and know i'm going to laugh even when i'm sad I don't care if it's the most silly video, or even if you just laugh about stupid jokes for 20 minutes i would watch all of it It's almost like for a bit hanging out with friends laughing about anything I'm really thankful to you guys~
People fail to remember that going vegan doesn't just mean eating buddah bowls amd drinking green smoothies, some people go vegan for the animals and earth, I've been for 5 years and I go to burgerging whenever I go to the big city which is 40 mins away so not too often, and I like to go to mcdonalds as well, not eating meat doesn't just happen because people suddenly develop a hate for sausage shaped things... It's not about hating meat and banning taste.
As a former Burger King Kitchen Manager, I can tell you with 100% certainty, at least in the US, we do NOT have vegan mayonnaise. It's just the normal mayo we use for everything else. Also, if you don't ask for it to be microwaved instead of broiled, it goes through the same broiler we use for our beef burgers. Just a PSA for my US vegan friends.
As a vegan, I appreciate more fast food places having vegan or vegetarian options because sometimes I just want to eat with my family without having to make my own food. Being social usually involves food so having an option when going out with others makes me happy
What a time to be alive for vegetarians/pescatarians! Especially those who have recently switched up their dietary choices -- with all these plant-based foods being introduced, definitely not going to "have it as hard" as opposed to even 5 years ago.
My faves are definitely McPlant and the KFC burger... unfortunately the vegan whopper isn't officially certified vegan because they cook it on the same grill as real meat... bit disappointing for those of us that can't eat it because of that 😭😭😭
Most restaurants use the same grill. It is still considered vegan because you're not directly contributing to animal suffering. That being said - the vegan whopper uses impossible meat and while that is considered vegan now they used to test on animals. :/

Out of these, I've tried the Impossible Whopper and the Shroom Burger. Both are good. One isn't really a burger replacement, though. But, the Impossible Whopper was good enough for me to have a few times in place of a regular Whopper, just because.
Honestly one thing that bothers me about the vegan McDonald's burger (Here in Germany. Other countries ofc have other options etc.) Is that it replaces the vegetarian burger that already existed. The veggie burger was a cheap option, like a simple cheeseburger, but now instead they only have the vegan burger, which is one of the more expensive options. Why couldn't they just have kept both options 😭 There are millions of beef burger and they don't remove them from the menu. But oh nooo one more vegetarian option? Absolute no go apparently.
I agree when you say they should've added it instead of replacing but I personally hated the previous veggie burger, it was made with quinoa and I honestly hated it.
@@martaribeiro96 Honestly I like them all, but I'm also not vegetarian, so even if I didn't I'd be fine (I just like to eat vegan or vegetarian options if available). But I have a lot of vegetarian friends, who all lament the missing veggie burger because they preferred it over the current vegan burger. I mean in the end it's McDonald's loss, because other franchises(prominently burger king) have more than one option, so if we go to eat fast food, we'll go there instead.
Out of all these vegan options, I really liked A&W Plant-based nuggets but they were only available for 5? or 7days, a bit salty but it was good. I'm not a vegan but I just really liked nuggets 😆
In the US at least, Burger King is clear that the veggie patty is 'vegetable based' NOT vegan. I think someone tried to sue bc of cross contamination and that's why they use that phrasing.
I am really torn when it comes to vegetarian or vegan substitutes for meat. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years now, and even if it now is more because of how the animals are treated, it started because I stopped liking meat. So I can't eat substitutes options that are supposed to be as similar to meat as possible, for example beyond burger. I rather have lenthil or halloumi burgers. But I am still very happy that there are options like these for the people who want to eat meat but can't, or choose not to. So I hope that this video show that there are vegan and vegetarian options which taste good and not like grass.
In USA Burger King’s plant-based Whopper is called the Impossible Whopper because the patty is made by Impossible Foods. I wonder if the patty is the same in UK and cant be called “Impossible” because of licensing or if it’s made by a different company.
Alright, so McDonald's actually has another vegan main, the spicy veggie wrap is fully vegan. The burger king whopper IS NOT vegan, it is plant based but is cooked on the same grill as beef so it's covered in meat juices. They do have a vegan chicken burger though that is actually vegan. And then we come to kfc that has a vegan chicken burger but beware of the fries/chips, these are not vegan at kfc as they are cooked with chicken.
It really depends on what type of vegan you are- some vegans don’t care about the product being cooked next to or on the same grill, so long as the actual meat is vegan.
So glad to see you try vegan stuff! I've been vegan for a few years now and the stuff has improved so much, it's often scarily close to the animal product. You should totally try vegan McFlurry!

Tons of the candies, chips/crisps, cookies (standard Oreos!), cereals, candied nuts, baked goods, cereals, etc, that I've seen enjoyed on this channel are vegan. Even one of their favorite's, Buc-cee's beaver nuggets, might be vegan, depending on what the source of the "natural butter flavor" is (the 'natural' doesn't necessarily mean it came from real butter)
I tried the McPlant - it tasted like very, very poor quality meat (but I could've believed it was meat), it was very grainy, I ate a real meat mcdonalds burger directly after which was far nicer I also tried the Plant Based Whopper - it tasted very nice, just as nice as the real meat whopper I had directly afterwards. By far the best vegan option I have ever tried. The only issue with it was the plant based whopper is £1 more than the regular one and I don't see why soy should cost more than beef. I might give the KFC one a go at some point but the shakeshack one looks and sounds absolutely disgusting even if it does have real cheese

In my country we don't have any of these restaurants except McDonald's and even McDonald's doesn't offer a McPlant here. Living vicariously through Jolly once again 🥲 The Whopper looked really good.

As a life long vegetarian (not vegan) I've eaten a LOT of vegetable burgers, some good, some not so good and some really good ones, I'll have to agree that as far as commercially available to the general public options, the Whopper is by far the best. It really comes down to the toppings and I'm an "all the way" guy - everything on it and ketchup, mustard, mayo and pickles. Of course a good, sturdy bun makes all the difference as well. By the way, Ollie's southern accent is pretty damn good! (I'm a southern boy as well). You should come to Charleston, SC and take it all in - the geographical beauty of the rivers and the bays and the ocean (and beaches) along with the stunning architecture, culture, arts and, most importantly, the FOOD! You'll see - come and visit.

Josh and Ollie haven't had good experiences with vegan food...
Ikrrrr
I think it's also that a lot of people don't realize that a huge amount of food we eat is vegan by nature. They hear "vegan" and assume you have to do some weird food wizardry to make the food. It also doesn't help that a lot of vegan people are so militant about it.

Wow Ollie's Kentucky accent is incredible! 😂
As a vegetarian, this is the first usable consumer advice I have ever gotten from this channel. And it was still ridiculous.
Ollie's southern accent was surprisingly good but still made me laughed until I cried 😂😂😭🤣
My faves are definitely McPlant and the KFC burger... unfortunately the vegan whopper isn't officially certified vegan because they cook it on the same grill as real meat... bit disappointing for those of us that can't eat it because of that 😭😭😭
You can ask them to clean the grill before cooking it
In Australia they apparently have a different grill for the burges at Hungry Jacks.
Most restaurants use the same grill. It is still considered vegan because you're not directly contributing to animal suffering. That being said - the vegan whopper uses impossible meat and while that is considered vegan now they used to test on animals. :/
@@jennifert8542 As someone who works in BKs as a contractor, not an actual BK employee. That is NOT going to happen. It takes at least an hour to break down the broiler and clean it properly. Many places don't do it right even outside of this specific interaction. Google "Nieco broilers" and look at how they're built. You can't just wipe them down.
Wouldn't cooking in a different/exclusive grill be kind of bad for the environment overall?
More electricity/gas consumption

As I'm in the US, I've never had the McPlant, but the old McDonalds veggie burger was pretty decent. I did used to get it occasionally.
The KFC one is just Quorn.
Out of all these vegan options, I really liked A&W Plant-based nuggets but they were only available for 5? or 7days, a bit salty but it was good. I'm not a vegan but I just really liked nuggets 😆
yes!! that was one of my fav plant-based items
This confirms it, Macdonald's doesn't put in any meat in their burgers that's why it was so similar. Only thing they changed is sauce.
Ollie’s absolute devastation when he realised the shake shack wasnt vegan
In USA Burger King’s plant-based Whopper is called the Impossible Whopper because the patty is made by Impossible Foods. I wonder if the patty is the same in UK and cant be called “Impossible” because of licensing or if it’s made by a different company.

Dudes, vegetarian for 20 years - being able to grab a McDonald’s burger is such an amazingly happy thing!

0:13 "What comes to mind is natural, healthy" lol, as someone that enjoys lot's of vegan items, there's a ton of unhealthy and processed vegan foods.
I tried the McPlant - it tasted like very, very poor quality meat (but I could've believed it was meat), it was very grainy, I ate a real meat mcdonalds burger directly after which was far nicer
I also tried the Plant Based Whopper - it tasted very nice, just as nice as the real meat whopper I had directly afterwards.
People say the KFC one is fried in with the chicken, same oil. If that matters to you
@@LindaC616 Depending on the store and how they choose to follow the "rules," the veggie/vegan options are supposed to be only cooked in the fryers they use for fries/chips and other non-meat stuff.
