- Exploring exquisite Persian manuscript art inspired by the world's longest poem: the Shahnameh, or 'Book of Kings'.
1000 years ago in Persia the world's longest poem was written: the Shahnameh, or 'Book of Kings'. This epic inspired some of the most exquisite manuscript art ever produced - miniature masterpieces that on show at the Fitzwilliam Museum in the exhibition Epic of the Persian Kings: The Art of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh (11 September 2010 -- 9 January 2011).
In this podcast, Charles Melville (Professor of Persian History at the University of Cambridge) explores why the Shahnameh is still so important, and why its fantastical stories have endured over a milennium.
The videos have been available on the Fitzwilliam Museum website for a while, as well as on our official iTunes U site. We are now uploading them to RUclips for archive purposes and will continue to upload new videos here in the future. We're hoping that the content is still of interest to people, even after the exhibitions have closed. Thank you for watching.
🇧🇴😍😍shahnaameh! It is my bibel!
Great Job! Thank you...
Amazing
There has been, apparently, a tradition under the Medes in like 600 something bc where in the ancient city of ecbatana or modern Hamadan where they did something to calm the devils btw. Who knows maybe ferdowsi is not writing a legend but more writing a tradition. 1:09
Why post this podcast so late in the day, a month after the exhibition closed?
