Also I should say I love your reviews. Very well done, and I especially like how you honestly point out faults and potential worries.
Well I ended up transporting it inside a plastic Berocca tube. Taping the pen end to the lid and flipping the tube upside down. This was just because I didn't want to delay the filming for a third day. The first two attempts I found that the memory was full when I pulled the pen out of my pocket or bag. The slightest tap on that button will start the camera recording and it will only stop when the memory is full.
It paid for itself with the proceeds I made from using it to go back to the early 90s and invest in Apple shares. It came from eBay....I've forgotten the name of the seller though.
That's something I didn't test. I never recorded more than a few minutes at a time...except when I recorded the inside of my bag by accident, but I just deleted those files.
Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look at it.
I've been having some problems with faulty products recently. I've wasted time working on a couple of video reviews that I've either had to abort, or put on hold while I resolve some issues.
I might try and get hold of the white (cheapest) one...if its available at a sensible price in the UK.
I like the reviews of the crappy cameras, I think there funny on what you say about them, there funny on how crappy they can be, do more of those, it will also save us to not buy it,
First of all, I'm extremely impressed with your videos, your comments and your enviable fluency enhanced by the timely touches of humour. Thank you for all of it.
I am a gadget lover and although I have no particular use for any of these "spy" pens, I couldn't help noticing that on this particular pen the lens is very obvious. It stands out to even any untrained eye like mine, be it left or right.
I have the cheaper albeit decent version 720p, but the lens is hardly noticeable.
Man, you're going to cost me a small fortune with your great organized, to-the-point reviews. Thank-you!
Hmm, interesting. Love your reviews, very thorough. I like that you even test it out in low light. Very important, I think.
OK, so the title of the video might be a bit over the top, but I honestly believe that this is the first Spy Pen that records true 720p HD footage. I'm also trying to attract viewers across from my old video of the rubbish Spy Pen - If people want a spy pen then I would prefer that they saw this video and bought this one rather than wasting their money on that other old fake piece of junk.
It's not stupid at all. Click on the video in my channel that's called Camera Mounts & My Other Video Making Equipment....it's a behind the scenes video that goes into the equipment used (including the white background).

Thank you for taking the time to review a lot of the Cams you have, They are very helpful. You also do a good job at reviews on Car Cams. One of your reviews stopped me from buying it.
I've never tried the Replay - my favourite and the one I use all the time is the Contour Roam 2.
To get the pen part out, you simply use a screwdriver to unscrew it from the inside
I recorded 60 minutes and the file is like 15 gig. How can you reduce the size so it is playable? I cant even download it to my machine....
WanderleiSilva29 Thee's no reason why any machine couldm't download and play a video file just because it's large, unless a) the hard drive your trying to copy to is in the old FAT format (4 GB limit) and not NTFS, b) you don't have enough free space to copy the file across, or c) (and this is just for replay, not copying) your computer doesn't have the grunt to play a file with a high data rate (unlikely, if it's even vaguely modern). You can fairly easily use VirtualDub to recode, resize, edit, etc, if you can find a way to copy it (or possibly even just on the device if your card has enough room).
I've owned a couple of these to record in places where you didn't want it known. They're nice cams and get the job done. I've never had anyone figure out that it was a camera.
Very good video. Very thoroughly reviewed.
I've yet to see one that record in h.264, so I haven't bothered getting one.
Techmoan, Thanks for all the great videos. I was wondering if you have ever reviewed the many camera watches that seem so popular these days?
maybe it is not the pen that is better. maybe the world is in better definition now.
I don't know how I stumbled on this channel but I know my life is better for it.
I love to get the cheap ones and get them working right. People that pay $300 Plus seem to have the same problems. I would love you to do one as you do great reviews. I have three and they work great after working with them in steath mode. James Bond mode...maybe you understand.
Believe it or not I watched like 10 other reviews just a few hours ago, yes I watched them before but they are just so good that they don't bore any time soon ^_^
I just watched a video in which you said you wouldn't do a review of it as there would be many other reviews of it...
Don't get me wrong here, it's just today that I got interested in a GoPro camera as I am looking for something to record underwater footage of a nearby pond (fishes etc.) with for a good price... I would very much love a GoPro review, as I will have a better idea of what I can expect from someone who expects something from a camera.
Cheers, love your videos a whole bunch!
Iam not sure if you said the pencil is not rechargeable after it's empty. Actually you can get a new refill inside the tip you have a philips like screw which you can carefully losen and change the tip, shorter than on a normal pen. Just cut it at the right length put it in the screw and off you go.
Nobody should complain about the shaking that occurs when you walk. I like filming with DSLRs, and its pretty much a given that you will always have some amount of shaking unless you spend on steadycams for stabilization. This is just normal camera issues and people should expect only good quality when there is decent lighting and when you are sitting or standing still. This guy has it clear and people shouldnt be complaining it doesnt do "Go Pro HD".
Lol, well, of course, if you have that kind of money then you are allowed to nag about bad quality.
Again a nice and thorough review, I have this camera, and mine doesnt have that rattleissue with the button... But I to got that "bonussound" as it was going through costums here in Denmark, I thought that was kinda funny though :)
I'm pretty sure I met the fella who was singing at 10:05 at the Ellie Goulding album release in HMV, he had a bit of an ad-hoc x-factor audition infront of Ellie
Great video as always. But I´m still waiting for a proper car DVR (real 720-1080p) with great quality) and good design.
Thanks for the informative review. Actually for the price and form factor the quality of this spy pen's video doesn't look too bad.
My suspicions were true. I emailed 2 eBay sellers advertising this HD Spy Pen and both advised me that a class 4 card is built in. If you expect jittery free and smooth HD videos, it's best to buy a Spy Pen that you can insert your own card. If you take H.264 codec videos, a class 6 should be minimum, but class 10 is best.
Imagine video cameras in pens 30 years ago, with a VHS tape, or 60 years ago, i'm thinking a pen with 8mm film reels discreetly concealed within the little clicky button on the top
Techmoan ,
the bottom part of the pen (3:00) you can take a screw driver there and change it .
thanks !
@FlyingZayin lots of cheap ebay video cameras claim to record in HD when in practice they capture SD quality or worse. In this context, "true HD" is fitting.
My iPod 4th gen has issues, when the screen changes on a tablet your filming, the camera has to keep refocusing again to get the image back. So I'm sure this isn't a big issue on a lot of these small camera's.
Just bought it off ebay, hope to get it soon :) can't wait to give it a test...
If they could make one to look like a standard biro pen I would have one! If people were to get something out like that, everyone would be asking "what's that" or saying "size of the pen!".
This one does seem quite good for what it is.
That's actually surprisingly good. There's probably better ones by now. It's good if you want to cover news events or protests. I was at a protest a few years back and the cops gave me dirty looks because of my camera.
I know not many people use these things as spy cams, but the security guard the place I work has a spy pen and a spy wrist watch. He uses it to record and take stills of any dodgy looking characters.
Indeed! Somehow I love reviews in British accent. And other than 'Dr. Ashen', 'Techmoan' reviews good stuff (well, sometimes).
:)
finally a new VIDEO!! i love ur videos man! its entertaining...
I got the old hd pen for Christmas and im just glad that i actually know what the hell to do with it
"...it's about what I normally pay for a zebra burger..." :)
If you look for "spy cam" on ebay you can get ones hidden in clocks and things. Depends if you want it pointing inwards, though. A clock facing out at the street might look weird XD
Just a tip if you brake it open the buttions for menu and play back are under nether the body
It's a deliberate freeze frame.
I didn't notice if you said whether or not there are gaps between the segments. Of course given the 1/2 hour battery life it won't record much more than the first 25 min. segment, but when it jumps to the next one, is it seamless?
Excellent review as usual. I have used both the spypen and keyfob type devices for covert recording. Although both devices are excellent for the job, particularly the key fob type, I have had problems with the software on both dying on me. I have found that they can drop into standy mode and then not recover which causes embarassing fumbling with a device that is supposed to be hidden! Not sure what to do about it really
Are you the same guy who narrated "THe Story of the Internet"? Bro your voice and accent are so alike!!
The plug on the USB cable looks like a micro-HDMI. Perhaps they have a dual purpose jack - output and charging. My tablet has the same HDMI output - but without the charging or USB functions.
The Gentlemens Choice :
OK Ladies and Gentlemen, a true gentleman always knows how to find the best. This review is as complete as it gets! Top shelf. The dry British humour....... Top shelf.... However, remember.... I'm Canadian!.... A Commonwealth country. Highest marks.
Loyally yours
Kurtis K. Cullen
I bought this and agree that the button is way too sensitive. What is it that you use to protect the button while the pen is in your pocket? Thanks!
Very impressive for a technology from 2012 .
You may be interested in using "Media Inspector" on the Mac to show file information, instead of Quicktime properties. It shows lots more geeky irrelevant info that people will enjoy.
Well done, thanks from US.
I have a stupid idea, how about just using the camera side of the pen itself, and rubber band it to the visor of your car. How does it look when you drive around doing video? My point is it's small, and easy to place just about anywhere with some tape or rubber band, etc. I'd like to see how it does using it as a camera inside your car when your driving around.
Hi Technoman... I have bought one after seen you amazing review. I like the vídeo quality alot for such a small device. I got three questions here if you could help: 1. During charging you have the red light turned on but how do you know if the baterry is fully charged so that I can unplug before damaging the batery and when it is completely empty how long do I have to charge for...? 2. How do you take phot using the pen...? 3. How do you record áudio..? Thanks mate. Really need your advice
If you are a spy, according to all the films I have seen, you are always getting into fights. I don't think this pen/camera will stand up to that kind of abuse.
Kcuhc There's also swimming under water for extended periods of time. And jumping out of aeroplanes and off large dams. I can't believe Mat didn't test all these scenarios...
Which minicam do you think is the best one Quality of Camera and Video wise?.... The 3 I see is ( not in any order )
The Mobious, Kilimanjaro - 1080P HD , and I haven't seen a real name but 1080P Mini Camcorder 1200MP wanted to get a opinion?...
you have a bloody cool british accent!!! :D- nice review, thanks!
I bought mine on eBay,I looked around a bit ,I paid 4.95 ,bought two gold and one silver same as the one in the picture.
What's your favorite motorcycle camera at the moment? What do you think of Replay XD? I bought the 720p version, don't regret it, but I feel like I should've shopped around a little more. Anyway, there's no perfect action cam at the moment, is there? I feel the 1080p Replay XD is pricey. :(
As always, Techmoan, great review.
BTW--Do you like Wallace & Gromet? {I know, not related at all, but something you said, or the way you said it, made me thing of those guys} ... maybe 'cause I'm American from Florida.
Cheers
I'm thinking the slot is where they installed a microSD card and then don't want you to be able to insert a 32gb in there, so you have to keep buying there pens with higher storage rates.
Geez! The mic points INTO YOUR SHIRT??? Any pens/watches that have the mic pointing toward the air and subjects?
Most of these gimmicky gadgets are NOT Real HD. They are "Interpolated" by software. And it is a pain in the back side to remove the annoying date/time stamp. Over all your reviews are very detailed and comprehensive for which I Thank You.
Thanks my Mancunian Mate.
guess you need to be better informed
@tffucks...
I preferred to be informed by An EXPERT like Techmoan and not Shysters like you.
Keep your sarcasm to yourself. IDIOT
This pen is real HD trust me I've tried it and it even explicitly says it's NOT interpolated on the product description.
Really? Moi being sceptic, I never trust anything or anybody unless they can prove
it to me. I have used these thingamajig numerous times and believe you me they are NOT Real HD despite what they claim to be.
Can you/ Will you prove it to me?
pundadah How can you disprove it from seeing the video? It's tonnes better. Even on the firmware I've got for it I can set it to record 1280x720 30fps, 848x480 30fps, or 640x480 30fps.
Is this still the best HD spy pen ? Or are there even better ones on the market ? I notice some sellers on ebay are offering a 1080p 5MP cmos spy pen, but I don't know how legit they are. They aren't too expensive though, so I might just buy one to test.
How was it?
Brilliant review.
WOW! I can't believe how much people in the UK have to spend for all these cameras Techmoan reviews.
I bought a HD spy pen for only $13 USD and with free shipping.
So you bought a piece of fake HD crap !
Ellsworth M. Toohey No. I uploaded a video that I made with it and RUclips recognized it as being made by a HD camera.
Check it out and see what you think. It's called..
"Home made - rapid loader for pellet rifle"
Put some masking tape on the button to prevent it from rattling?
Hey, Your videos are so great to watch, I couldn't find one on your channel but have you done a review of the GoPro Hero 3?....
I do have to ask what's the song that guy is singing when you're testing the camera outside?
Michael Jackson- Dirty Diana
You asked (just after 6mins) "Who has a pen in their top pocket nowadays?" My answer is "Harry Hill" - Do I get a prize?
Seriously great video - thanks for the time and trouble making it. ☺
hi i buy one but i cant use it all the tim i have red blue color please any one have any idea my memorycard 16 gb
يا هلا بيك
سلامات لايفيت وسرين
Reem a.h WTF an empty comment? Oh wait ...
I have a question when you are recording and you go to plug it in to the computer will it play back what you recorded throughout the day or will it lose that and you can't pull that to show people what you have record?
problem with this.... When you make a video over 3 minutes long it turns to an insanely big file that a laptop wont even be able to play..... I recorded 60 minutes and the file is like 15 gig. How can you reduce the size so it is playable?
i found one for 18 canadian dollars at ebay, atm the cheapest 720p pen, type in search box 1280x720 pen and click on buyitnow, and select lowestprice with shipping
I'm really sorry Matt, I've just found out that I haven't seen these videos yet!
Hi Techmoan, big fan. I bought the Zmodo CCTV camera based on your review, but was wondering could you review and recommend a good 1080p version of this pen? I wanted to buy a 1080p model with a quality as similar to the mobius as possible...
Hello, on the eBay link there are a few pens that look the same as this video and are about the same price. Can you tell me exactly which one is it?
I have a question... is the holder thing that you use to slip it in your pocket flexible? Because I got the older version that was so inflexible that when I tried to slip it between my shirt buttons (because most of my shirts have no pockets) it broke off completely, I've managed to get it back in place half way, but it's still very awkward and hard to point where I want it.
I'm willing to buy another, would this one be as fragile, too?
Hi if the cam lens damage is it easy to replace the lens or the end of it has to be purchase new on pls let me know because it's happen my pen
Do you know if the pen dies while its recording, will it lose the footage ? or does it save out
great presentation
Out of all your cameras which one do you think is best?
Thanks for an informative clip. I bought a dashcam which was supposed to be HD. It's not. It's upscaled from a lower resolution. Same difference it optical zoom and digital zoom. Have at last found Chinese supplier. Thanks again for exposing a big fiddle.
eletech086 advertises pen uses MOV format and AVI is optional!
Clear Magic Tape on top will stop rattle, need to re-apply if necessary.
I suspect seller does not use inbuilt class 10 card, as video is too jerky.
mam
i need your suggestion
i need a spy pen camera which can click clear still images so that if i click some documents i can be able to read the text in it.
Can you recommend any such pen?
Gaurav Singh Nain Hi. There's one in amazon. It's in HD and might just be what you're looking for. Here's the link:
www.amazon.com/Spy-Pen-Camera-Premium-Tiny/dp/B00JGR0TVI/
Great video, What microphone do you use?
Your voice reminds me of the narrator of The Stanley Parable!
4:31 is easily the best way anyone has ever said spying, ever
always informative & entertaning.
I didn't know there was a motion detection feature, so I haven't tried that.
Brilliant video, very enjoyable
These videos are great.
Another awesome review!!
So the previous one was a true pen with fake HD and this one is a true HD cam but a fake pen?... haha
Great review once again! :)
Got mine today and tried opening the clips on my Macbook Pro using QuickTime Player and it won't open. Any suggestions if this works on Mac at all?
Try using VLC instead.
Techmoan It works! Thanks, bud.
+William Watts its a free bit of software you can download that plays almost every kind film type. Just google it then download it. When you next go to play something right click and choose VLC player as your default player.
Greetings, do you know of a spy pen camera that can transmit live footage wirelessly? Similar to that one but I was wondering that, for an instance, I could be recording something and a friend of mine watching it at the same time.
