When people think of Dire Straits, they always think about Mark Knopfler's guitar playing - and understandably so - but drummer Terry Williams deserves a nod on this one too. Phenomenal!

1000 times better today I listen to this version for the first time. Have in mind I have been listening to the studio version for more than ten years. I just cant believe i never listen to this version. Pure beauty
I think that the studio version is much more clean if you enjoy the guitar in particular, but the only thing that the studio version has going over the live performance is the guitar tone
When a 40 year old song performed by dedicated and immensly talented musicians can still touch the current generation, the world is gonna be ok :-) ...also it reminds you that there is one universal language that we all understand, no matter where, who or what we are...thx Mark, Eddie and all the others.
At first I thought reaction videos were just a meme, a way for youtubers to easily get attention and views from fans of the music videos artists they were reacting to. Now today I finally realized why I enjoyed watching Mr Vid had a blast watching this epic Dire Straits live piece: it basically made me feel again what I felt when I first heard this song from a crappy mpeg ripoff of the official laserdisc, before youtube even exists. There are really few songs like this one, that when they are played live, transcend the original song to these levels of epicness. It's difficult to even describe what you feel, you need to express it physically. That's exactly how the people from the audience of this concert expressed their joy and also how Mr. Vid reacted to it. Thx for the memories, it made my day and beyond
I know what you mean about reaction vids. Thinking on it, though, and watching them, I came to realize it's like that thing where the first thing you want to do when you find something really cool is show it to your friends. The innate desire and even need to teach others what we know seems to be a uniquely human drive, and it may be the very thing most responsible for our dominance on this planet. Also, now I'm totally addicted to reaction vids. I particularly like the ones where I get to see how people with backgrounds and life experiences very different to my own respond to stuff I really like. So far, it seems awesome things have a surprisingly-universal sorta appeal, which makes me realize that I should be a lot more open to stuff others think is cool, even if it's not necessarily something I'd seek out on my own.
@@michaelccozens something widely acclaimed is not necessarily mainstream. For instance Elvis was one of his kind and still not "mainstream" imho. So I agree that you should always look at stuff that are different to avoid bias of "mainstream" stuff, but not closing door to it as masterpieces become sometimes mainstream and trans-genetational
Mark Knopfler is the KING of finger-picking....one of the all-time best guitarists. No fuzz, twang, or downtuning - just crystal clear notes. Now try the live version of "Telegraph Road", "Down to the Waterline", and "Brothers in Arms"....you will NOT regret it.
Everybody talks about breakdowns, but this is one of the most beautifully executed build-ups ever! These guys are ALL amazing musicians. Legends! Great reaction, my dude. Keep it up!
I obsessed over watching this Alchemy Live Gig as a kid in the 80s, on our betamax video player. For my 6th or 7th birthday, I had a red and white plastic fender stratocaster and a set of head and wrist sweat bands. I pretended to be Knopfler in the mirror. My birthday cake was the strat with licorice laces for the strings. I obsessed over dire straits. I marvel even more now just how God like and natural Knopfler is with that guitar. And Terry Williams, fellow welshman 🏴 killing it on drums! Thanks RUclips algorithms and great to see you enjoy the depth of the music!
i feel like your going to get a very subjective answer on what a honky tonk is but from my perspective, it's an old ass country bar in the middle of nowhere. cheap beer, live music.
@@paddyofurniture705 In the context of the song, he is talking about music clubs in London, which is where I was born and raised, it is what you play on a piano.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck. A honky-tonk is where you go to hear live music.

@@theodoreritola7641 you need to chill! I’m well aware this is from dire straits 70s self titled eponymous album 🤫 I was simply alluding to the fact that Dire straits enjoyed their most critically commercial run during the 80s and are generally more associated with this decade particularly the Brothers in arms era.
In my mid 70s, getting old. Of course I've been blown away by Dire Straits for decades. Let me say that your reaction, your spirit, your association with the timbre of this masterpiece, and your genuine immersion really contributed to my enjoyment. You, Sir, are REAL. I'm subscribed, and I'm here with you.
I was lucky enough to have seen Dire Straights in concert and Stevie Ray Vaughn was opening for them! I was too young to really appreciate what I was witnessing... Only 15🙄 but it was still awesome
Wow. I saw a lot of legends live (mostly thanks to my parents, who are heavily into music) - McCartney, Clapton, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Colosseum, Steve Hackett, Frampton, Lukather - Dire Straits is the one band I really, really would have wanted to see more than anything else.
@Dania Ann Alchemy is responsible for my lifelong love for playing the guitar. My parents played a lot of music at home and only in hindsight I can attribute some of the appreciation for some musicians to that. For example John Lee Hooker - my dad didn't listen to him but he listened to music like that and I somehow caught the blues bug and went on a journey of my own. I am sure CSNY did something for you even if it may not be obvious.
The voice always surprises me~ those deep, haunting vocals . Coming from such a benign looking guy! Brilliant performances!

Would be INCREDIBLE if you react to some music from Argentina! We have some really great music from here! Some of the greatest artist of all time would be Charly Garcia, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Gustavo Cerati, SUMO, Fito Paez... Just for tell some ones...
Yes, sometimes you get to know a good song, but somewhere out there it may exist a more interesting version of the same song. And most people who watch those reaction channels will want you to experience the best versions.
One of my favorite songs by one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Picking a favorite version comes down to taste, but for me this is not the version of SoS I'd choose to introduce someone to Mark Knopfler. With a few exceptions, I just don't think live performances work very well for reaction videos. It's not easy to play and sing at the same time, especially this song. There's a ton of energy and great individual performances in this concert clip, but it's also a bit sloppy. It fails to showcase the iconic groove, feel, and tight pocket of the original, which many consider to be the greatest strength of the song (along with Mark's singable leads). I'm sorry for bringing any negative energy, just wanted to encourage anyone hearing Sultans of Swing for the first time to check out the original studio version of the song if this live version doesn't do it for them.
Unbelievable reaction! So glad you went for the Alchemy Live version, it’s in a different ball park ….I’m a dance music, old stool hip hop fan from the UK ..my dad used to bang this out to us in my youth, and it remains one of my top 5 tracks/performances of all time…just pure art.the breakdown…the drumming ..,the pacing …marks pickin…just pure art 😎💪🏼👏👏👏👏👏
Wild Theme in particular is beautiful isn't it? Have you heard Altimira from the soundtrack he did with percussion legend Evelyn Glennie a couple of years back? It's another stunning classical guitar piece.
Listen to Brothers in Arms from the One Night in London -Live album. The addition of the strings takes you on a journey that will let anyone feel what it really means to have true Brothers in Arms. I am a 3rd generation veteran myself, so yes I do know. I started losing these Brothers years before I even enlisted. Our extended family was always the squadron my father was assigned to and the rest of said base...
@@jameskirschling7887, yeah you're mistaken. It's just straight finger picking, clawhammer style. I've seen Mark use a pick occasionally and play slide guitar, but I don't think I've ever seen him use finger picks.

A Honky Tonk - is a bar with live music! I’d call a smaller bar with many “regulars” there, often a country bar - a honky tonk. You said once you weren’t sure if, as a black man, you’d be welcome in a “honky tonk” - fair enough question - but, it’s about energy - and YES you’d be VERY WELCOME!
Somebody told you it's "a beer joint" huh? That just means some place that sells beer - a bar. A Honky Tonk is way more happenin' than just a beer joint. It's gotta be a hoppin' place (typically not very big) with some live music and and people dancing, damn near a party!

Mr Video!!! Told you this was the best version!! Classic!! 🙌😂🔥
Yeah you and a thousand others, guess what people dislike 🤐🤐
Personal opinion here, but I like Leo Moracchioli's cover better.
Edit: Side note, Leo might be a good source for more content.
@@trismaccarran9950 Yes I agree! Hearing the studio first is always best! I actually love the studio version also, as far as live this is the best I’ve seen for sure. I just happened to mention it as soon as I saw the first one, I wasn’t sure he would do this also. Apparently many others suggested it also! Lol 😂😎
Agreed after listening to alchemy version of SOS, I hv never wanted to listen to any other version. This version to me is also a stunning flawless live performance!
This live version is FAR SUPERIOR to the studio version. I normally prefer studio quality music, but this is BEYOND!!! Frickin Amazing!
Thanks for opening our minds to masterpieces like this!🤗
If it is a class artist live is best in my opinion mainly because they can ad lib.
Amazing ad lib and i love it😘
it isn't. still ok.
more energy but messier sound, especially for you-know-what.
"it touches you when you least expect it"
That's powerful and so true
What about Private Investigations also from this particular gig.?
Bang bang bang drummer is Terry Williams, absolutely killing it
Everybody talks about breakdowns, but this is one of the most beautifully executed build-ups ever! These guys are ALL amazing musicians. Legends! Great reaction, my dude. Keep it up!
probably one of the best live performances from any band ever
And one of the biggest songs any where , AND ITS FROM THE 70s
Probably ?
Agreed and I have been to alot
A honky tonk is a kind of divey bar or club where they play dirty country and blues music, ie honky tonk music.
Also Ragtime piano music.
You can play Rock n Roll too. Honky tonk is a beer joint. Juke joint.
i feel like your going to get a very subjective answer on what a honky tonk is but from my perspective, it's an old ass country bar in the middle of nowhere. cheap beer, live music.
In the context of the song it's honky tonk music that's being referred to..
@@paddyofurniture705 In the context of the song, he is talking about music clubs in London, which is where I was born and raised, it is what you play on a piano.
Brothers in Arms from Dire Straits is one of the most important songs in history. Talks about war... im 100% you will shiver
so true
Yessss
This is a MUST DO!😁
Have you seen the Veteran watching it? Hit hard.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
A honky-tonk is where you go to hear live music.
One of the best drummers ever!!!
sin dudas
You are one of the only people on youtube who actually take the comment seriously, really appreciate that! Plus, you got to experience that epic solo!
It's so encouraging to watch a cool young black guy enjoying 80s dad Rock 😆
PHILLIP ARE YOU SERIOUS ? This is one of the best KNOWN 70s song of all time from 1978 ...... But you 80s kids CLAIM FALSELY SO many 70s songs its PATHETIC
34 people dint even CORRECT THIS MAN That this song came out in 1978 WOOOW
@@theodoreritola7641 you need to chill! I’m well aware this is from dire straits 70s self titled eponymous album 🤫 I was simply alluding to the fact that Dire straits enjoyed their most critically commercial run during the 80s and are generally more associated with this decade particularly the Brothers in arms era.
@@theodoreritola7641 dude chilll 😂
@@philkearney0577 But your all so telling people that you think this is a 80s song Thats what i would think if I DIDNT know better
Hey man, I wasn't expecting you to take the time to record it again, but I'm damn glad ya did. Glad you liked it.
I had read that the drummers father was in the audience this night and it was his first time seeing his son play !! What a treat for all of us huh?
Terry Williams is an amazing drummer.
Special mention to Terry Williams on Drums!!
Wasn't the drummer playing for Man prior to DS? They were a cool band.
A lot of now a days music will be forgotten, but music from those days will be remembered and listen to for years, years years
I was lucky enough to have seen Dire Straights in concert and Stevie Ray Vaughn was opening for them! I was too young to really appreciate what I was witnessing... Only 15🙄 but it was still awesome
Whhoooaaahhhh
I am sure CSNY did something for you even if it may not be obvious.
ok we hate you now, happy? :)
I saw that tour also except Eric Clapton was with Dire Straits as second guitar..and Stevie Ray opening...it was awesome
The voice always surprises me~ those deep, haunting vocals . Coming from such a benign looking guy! Brilliant performances!
The drummer as mentioned below deserves a big proper respect indeed - that's a crazy tempo to hold for such a long song - and then Mark Knopfler does this crazy solo to boot
This is incredible! I can feel what you are feeling when I saw you reacting!!! I'm from Argentina, and I love this song since I was a kid, when my dad showed me up this band. And all can I say is thanks god youtube algorithm drop me here... Kind regards my friends. Keep going like this!!!
Would be INCREDIBLE if you react to some music from Argentina! We have some really great music from here! Some of the greatest artist of all time would be Charly Garcia, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Gustavo Cerati, SUMO, Fito Paez... Just for tell some ones...
Same....I am a German, and my father introduced me - among many more groups - to Dire Straits.... he did a great job! Greetings to Argentina!
It's not that you do the wrong video it is just we want you to experience the best. You are not to know...isn't that the point.
Thats right we will help him explore. Keep picking stuff that you need help with and we will help my friend.
One of the best live performances captured on video! Saw this band many many times. They always blew me away!!!!
I will NEVER for get how music was in the 70s, This song was released in 1978 THE GOOD OL DAYS FOR SURE
That was an orchestra with five people.
So choreographed by reactor. Ugh.
Terry Williams Hammers those drums!!! 💯🔥🥁
U know its good when Mr Video shows his elbow.
brother's in arms pretty pls 🏴🏴alchemy is on sky arts now how freaky is that 😳😳😂😂🏴🏴🏴
Yes, please. Brothers in Arms.
This performance is like an addiction everytime i get into it i have to listen to it several times in a row until I'm satisfied
I have heard that song 1000s of tines but never saw this live one. Blew me away too man
Glad you “got it”. This is an epic song that gets me the same way. I’m 70 and had music all my life. So glad you got the hair raising too!!
The drummer steals the show. Beats up a storm.
You did nothing wrong doing the studio version first then the live version
I think it’s better that way. Get a feel for the song with the video version and then hear the live jam version! Same with Money For Nothing probably.
oh I totally agree there. 100%, but I knew if he didn't experience that version he'd be missing out on a seriously legendary performance.
The live version is the best😉👍
Yeah, when the music & the tempo drops, your emotions flood in and drown you. We feel you, Mr. Video. Such a genuine reaction to a live masterpeiece.
Their instruments SANG that night ! Masterpiece...
"Brothers in arms" if you really want your heart broken. I love the music Mark Knopfler wrote for the film Local Hero - just lifts my spirits.
Wild Theme in particular is beautiful isn't it? Have you heard Altimira from the soundtrack he did with percussion legend Evelyn Glennie a couple of years back? It's another stunning classical guitar piece.
"going home" on Alchemy was the Movie Theme from Local Hero love it
Listen to Brothers in Arms from the One Night in London -Live album.
Who needs guitar picks to pull off one of the greatest guitar live performance when you have Mr. Mark Knopfler
I may be mistaken but I believe Mark Knopfler plays with finger picks.
@@jameskirschling7887, yeah you're mistaken. It's just straight finger picking, clawhammer style. I've seen Mark use a pick occasionally and play slide guitar, but I don't think I've ever seen him use finger picks.
@@jjc5407 thanks for the correction. I thought I had read or heard somewhere that he used fingerpicks. After looking at the video closer I couldn't see any picks. Thanks again.
@@jameskirschling7887 it would certainly be interesting to hear Mark play with finger picks. I wonder if he's ever tried them. Part of what I love about his playing is just how varied it is with a variety of guitars and different techniques. So many other guitarists tend to just stick with the same sound.
@@jjc5407 here is a video I think you will find interesting. Judging by the way he talks in the video I would say he never used finger picks. ruclips.net/video/qvdPB97-C5o/видео.html
The creme of guitar playing right there. The best in the game in my opinion. Great reaction
I've heard this countless times and I was tearing up WATCHING YOU tear up, bc it hits the soul every single time ❤️
Alchemy Live might be the greatest Live album ever released. So damn good music all in one take. 😄
We ALL need this sometimes. Music is one of the few things that can make me cry. That’s what makes it so special. Keep em coming...stay safe bro.
"Hooo-ly shi-zyl!" :)
The drummer is God in this one. Love how he is getting camera time so you as a viewer actually knows how much they are working up a sweat. Knopfler is great as well of course. Also, love how the other guitarist is moving kinda out of beat.
As much as I love Neil Peart (RIP), this drummer totally gets some serious props.
The drummer is Terry Williams.
@@trismaccarran9950 I agree! Neil Peart was a genius, and it was a sad day when the world lost him. Leo has become a guitar enthusiast (and justifiably so), but he has taken notice of a drummer or two. :) The day Leo starts playing air drums will be a great day indeed.
I always forget that Pick Withers quit after “Love Over Gold”- yeah, Terry is a monster of nuance.
This the feel good channel of 2020. Everyone and their mother need to watch this dude.
bro, that's just the right way to react to this masterpiece - all out screaming from joy, snap and clap along. you gotta move to feel the song, words are not enough :)
I'm genuinely in love with the way he reacts.
My favorite bit was around the 8 minute mark when knopfler starts showing off doing those muted string picks with the cheeky smile and Mr vid shouts "you smooth mother....", it summed the moment up perfectly
Amazing how music can bring emotions out and inspire us. It’s in all of us
A Honky Tonk - is a bar with live music!
It can depend on where it is.
In the context of the song, Honky Tonk is the style of piano the Keyboard player "Harry" plays in.
That may be my favourite reaction yet. When you have the time, sit down and listen to the whole album. A masterpiece. Telegraph road is another incredible live version. Keep going Leo. You da man.
Just where you pause it for the drum solo you can seen Mark Knopfler laughing at just how good Terry Williams is on the drums. Love it.
And the drummer comes from Swansea Wales about 30 miles from Cardiff
Such an amazing performance which makes me so emotional but doesn’t stop me watching it over and over. Mark Knofler is simply the best guitarist ever. No contest. The drummer was absolutely amazing also and makes the whole performance just the best ever. Love it
Mark Knopfler is so smooth! His vocals and his playing seem so effortless. Loved your reaction!
If you want to hear more from Dire Straits, check out Telegraph Road.
My favorite. The way the song builds up to the end - fcking masterpiece.
@@vinniemoran7362 the whole Alchemy album is imho a fcking masterpiece. From start to finish.

Music is so very powerful, I absolutely love everything about music...the lyrics, the instruments, the movement, the feel.
I've seen this many times and I'm still amazed at the drummers passion

The song 'Romeo and Juliette " from this same concert is fire 🔥too!
Back in 1978 when this song came out IT was EVERY WHERE ,, The 70s Baby
To get more of the crazy beautiful that "touches you when you least expect it" I hope you can visit some of the early to mid career stuff that weren't massive hits but were still massively amazing...
Hey Mr. V, I love your reaction to Dire Straits on both counts...the studio version, but especially this live version. These brothers rock! Keep on keeping on!
Some experiences hit you deep in the soul my friend and will stay in your soul forever. Honky tonk is the piano player in case noone else said. Peace and good health to you.
Hands down best guitar solo in the history of rock music
And you can feel this isnt forced or prepared, they are just having a blast :'D

You sir are a lucky man for that.
@@FloridaManRacer you want to know how lucky....
My Dire Straits story...
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show
I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
@@daveking9393 Hey, you fail the mid-terms you can always re take the class (not the best option but one's there) You don't go to the concert, you never see the show. Ever, no re-do. Correct choice was made lol.
You’ve been redeemed. The drummer gave more fills there than a gas station air pump!
This is the blues. Terry Williams is a monster. I saw them in about 1994. Incredible.
Leo, the beauty of this is overwhelming, thats why you cry, can you imagine being there cocooned in this beautiful sound, an experience never forgotten.
