How to Disable the ESS - Auto Start Stop on a Jeep JL

- Like it or hate it, its up to you, leave your comments below. My opinion is that the Auto Stop Start on the new 2018 and 2019 Jeep JL Wrangler JL and JLU is annoying as all get out. Just about the time the light is turning green your Jeep decides to stop the engine to save fuel and then it holds up traffic as it starts up again before its ready to go, putting what I believe is unnecessary strain on the engine components for what amounts to a trick to get the fuel economy numbers in line with what the government wants. What do you think?

The biggest concern I have is, how much is this feature going to effect engine life? They can say whatever they want, but I will never believe that restarting the engine over and over again at short intervals is not going to have some negative effect over the long term. I'm just happy my JK doesn't have this, it would drive me insane
I solved the start stop problem feature by buying a TJ
You also solved the lack of torque problem lol.
@@jeep6242 and you overpaid another 20k for that whopping 45 more ftlbs of torque..
@@trsoff-road321 Missing the point. I like the TJ and the 4.0 the torque is at lower RPM. I
XJ for me!
A redundant double safety switch for the hood very nicely represents how over engineered vehicles are nowadays. My work vehicle has auto start stop, seems like a terrible idea to stop at a light for 60 seconds while all the oil drains to the pan, then take off to 3k rpm right after the engine starts back up, ill spend the extra dollar in fuel savings to ensure long component life.
He did say that only one switch disables Stop/Start, the second switch is probably for Remote Start from the key fob.
So let me get this strait, they put in a fuel saving feature but it is disabled when you're low on fuel and potentially need it the most?
George Konrad because it does not save fuel, the moment an engine burns the most fuel is starting, so unless you stop for minutes shutting it off doesn't have any sense
@jjw3579 I'll bet they sell a lot of starters in those Countries.
Not sure but I think auto start stop is there for emitions. Which pisses me off even more.
Auto Stop Start is ASS... literally.

We hate this feature, too! Even if it does save a little gas, the constant restarting can't possibly be a good thing for the vehicle. I like your method of unplugging 2nd battery sensor. I'd rather deal with a simple warning light, which we know the minor cause of, than to have this constant nuisance and ware on our new jeep. Thanks for the helpful video. :)
*chrysler lawyers have entered the chat*
Lol
I know I'm not buying a new Jeep after a watch this love the video Happy New Year
*SAVES $100 in fuel over the life. Requires a new starter/battery every 5 years for $350*
So I installed the second option of the ODB2 connectors in my father WK2 and it works great he loves it. It does use a jumper wire into the and open port and distribution panel behind the dash that runs down to obd2 plug which sets its memory so when you need to take for inspection (like in NY) you can pass and same for any dealer required maintance
Wish they would of just had a key so much better
I realize this video is 4 years old. I just installed the Auto Start/Stop Eliminator from WV in my 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys for $100. It works great and only took about 20 minutes to install.
Great video. I was trying to figure out my auto start/stop wasn't working. First thing I've seen the sensor being used. I had my engine replaced and that sensor wire got damaged. Replaced it and now everything is working. Thanks for the information.
I had it on a rental truck and in traffic when it’s hot outside the AC doesn’t work with the engine off. I had also found with the feature on I got worse mileage in city driving with a lot of start stops.
"It saves fuel!"
I don't have to climb under my car to replace the fuel. The starter, on the other hand...
My jl is a 6 speed and I've been driving a manual for over 2 decades. There are times it cuts off when I'm simply trying to move slowly, such as roll up at a red light. Ugh! I hate it! Thanks for the video!
I’m sure the JL is a fine vehicle. In my opinion TJ and older are the best Jeeps.
Last option is to hire someone to drive you around and their other job is to hit the button upon startup. LOL. Great video.
What tells me it doesnt save fuel, is that if your fuel is low, it becomes disabled.
Got a 2018 jk in July my first thought was to get the JL for the lighter doors and new cosmetics. But. After much research...all winter.... I stayed with jk,proven model to avoid the ess along with other electrics.your right it would make me crazier than I am already! Very pleased with my choice, good vid. I’ll be watching! !
The bottom line is that this feature IS fuel efficient under the right conditions. Technology for Internal combustion engines have come such a long way from the days of manifold fed choke heaters and point style ignitions. Like many things there is a place for this technology. Is that place in a rural setting down a long country road or high on a dusty mountain trail? Perhaps not. This is reserved for city streets where stop and go is a constant and those short trips in a tight urban setting last a few hours due to high traffic volumes.
By the way, am not a fan of start/stop but AM a fan of the channel. Great New Years Resolution video. 👍👍Really liked that one!!
Just what we would want here in the COLD CANADIAN WINTER when we are trying to keep the frost off our windows and trying to heat up the vehicle. I suspect on the surface you might save some fuel but when you have to replace the early worn out parts the energy needed to make these parts plus the transportation to the seller along with the energy to go and purchase and either bring it home or to the repair shop would use up all the energy saved plus some. It looks good from behind the desk but not so in real life. Doesn't look that good to me if you were offloading and had another button to worry about. Leave them at it long enough and they will find a way to ruin it.
Well said. Did they think I want my engine to turn off when it's 100 in Texas? No, I want my AC to keep running.
Just got a 2019 Compass Trailhawk - my first with the stop/start feature. I HATE IT! It is probably a wash re saving fuel, but what are the consequences for the starter? I pity anyone who has lots of city driving. Thanks for the tips.
THANK YOU for this info! I absolutely HATE that effn button & the only complaint with my new Jeep. I had heard that it's not to save gas tho... it's an emissions control thing. Either way, they need to engineer it out. My Jeep is a manual... imagine having your engine cut out while stopped on a hill. Not too damned smart is it.
Great video, thank you!
Great advice. Thanks....
First woot woot love your videos Matt. I have been able to do a ton of custom work on my 98 xj from you.
Question 1. I do not like auto start stop, I think it’s a flawed system and will eventually prove to be problematic for off-readers.
Question 2. You drive a Jeep so why do you care about gas mileage 😂😂😂
I just bought a 2000 XJ, would love to see some more XJ videos!
When I test drove a jl that was the first thing I asked if it can be turned of permanently. My biggest problem with it is that it turns off the ac or heat when it turns the engine off.
if start stop really saved fuel, then why would it turn off when the fuel is low?
good question...
Start/Stop does not save fuel. Change my mind!
How could it save fuel if it doesnt work when you are low on fuel? You would think that is when it would be most helpful..
I have three cars that have it, tried it with and without and it does save a little fuel.
I'll let a professional do that: ruclips.net/video/dFImHhNwbJo/видео.html
Seems to me it would be better engineered to only activate auto start stop when you turn it on by the button instead of having to turn it off by the button every time.
Exactly
there is an adapter you can install between the wire harness and switch that reverses the switch. the switch is off when you start up. you have to push the button to turn it on.
My 1984 AMC Eagle had a stop/start option from the factory. Whenever one of gazillion vacuum lines AMC used developed a leak or the computerized BBD carb on the 258 fritzed it would quit at stop lights and signs. This requiring me to restart the engine, hold the clutch in, and heel-toe the gas and brake. My solution? Remove all the unnecessary vacuum crap and swap on a pre-stepper BBD. It worked fine ever since and there were no warning lights to worry about either!
It can wear out your starter but would be good if you were stuck in traffic. I am surprised that it wouldn’t remember it was off kind of dumb especially if yo use it on a farm where say you might stop because of a obstacle your trying to navigate. Great vid enjoy your new Jeep
There is one more way to avoid stop/start to work but it works on vehicles with manual transmission. It's just keeping vehicle on first gear and clutch pedal pressed when standing on red lights for example. With manual transmission it engages only when you throw gearstick to neutral position when vehicle is standing.
I do a lot of driving for work and get a lot of different rental cars. I did notice auto start stop is becoming more prevalent in the rentals. It took a little bit to get used to it, but it's not going to stop me from buying a vehicle with it if I like the vehicle enough, particularly if I know I can disable the feature full time with a programmer. I had a JL rental and did not see where the delay was holding up traffic at any point, but when the light turns green , I am ready to go whatever I am driving.
I'd be more concerned what disconnecting the BMS is doing to my batteries and charging system; if it's getting too hot or causing damage to the battery because the charging system is being limited due to lack of info from the sensor.
i think it depends on how long your stopped but i think it uses more gas unless your stopped for a long time either way it would suck in my opinion
I just got a 2020 Rubicon as a rental and hate the Start/Stop. Question if it was a manual Trans do they start/stop?
Question, if the auto start/stop saves gas, why would low fuel levels turn the system off? Could it be because it doesn't?
I personally hate the system and any fuel savings is offset by starter replacements and premature engine wear.
Why couldn't they program the button same way max ac works? Where the vehicle remembers that you pushed it off?
how much does it shorten the life of the starter motor to have to start the motor every time the vehicle stops? It's a lot easier for most people to put a little extra fuel in than to change the starter. also, it's not like chrysler/fiat/dodge/jeep is concerned too much about fuel savings or they wouldn't put out those heavy boats.
@jjw3579 If you can't confirm that the same grade of starter is on these Jeeps, you don't have an argument.
i know i hate the feature too i just watched a video for the f150 my truck starts and stops at lights they said plugging one of the 7 way trailer test lights stops it too
Good video - learned from this channel. The feature is ridiculous. Jeep owners understand it is not the most fuel efficient vehicle - and who cares. If you actually want a fuel efficient Jeep, go with the I-4 engine. But then of course you have an awesome off road vehicle powered by a wimpy sewing machine sounding 'engine'. Even with $5 gasoline, the start stop feature won't keep you from being broke - it barely helps if at all - and won't make any appreciable difference in your pocket book.
Turns out mine was the inboard plunger! Yours was the only video that mentioned that (everyone else thus far was specific it was only the outboard one). The Engineering Explained video was good, but only focused on fuel efficiency- not wear and tear, drivability, or impact with all the additional equipment. Living in a rural area, 7 to 8 seconds to be at a complete stop doesn’t seem realistic, probably good for heavier traffic though.
Thanks for another great video. Does that start stop warning stay on all the time? Constantly telling what you already know?
yes it does.
I really don’t mind the feature on my JL. It does immediately get turned off when going off road though 🇺🇸
It does work. Some of the lights here keeps you waiting 130 seconds (if you're just caught). In those times I stop the engine until 15 seconds mark. But I personally hate car being able to do things that I'm not telling it to do.
So it may work, but I'm the driver of the car. Car's not driving me. Control freak? Maybe
the f150 disables the auto stop if you have a trailer plugged in or at least it thinks you do like a hitch mounted 3ed break light
Soon as you put the foot on the clutch the engine should start, by the time you pull away engine is running, does not matter if there is 20 cars waiting their engines will be running before you need to pull away
(some cars will drop in to limp mode if you disable the start stop battery)
But I agree stop start is annoying as some cars have zero delay on stopping the engine
I can confirm that's what happens with the manual JL if I shift into it into neutral and put my foot on the brake it turns off, but as soon as I hit the clutch it turn right back on and put it in first and drive away. I haven't found it to be much of a delay. If your foot is on the clutch the whole time at the light the JL will not turn off doesn't matter if your in gear or not.
We hate it!! We’re using the smartstopstart on our 2017 Grand Cherokee and don’t have any complaints.
I hate the start/stop function. I like working on vehicle mainly Jeeps but how much extra stress is the starter going through with the constant need to be used. I am going to try the hood button.
Do you save enough fuel over the reduced lives of the battery and starter to justify the replacement costs? I doubt it. BTW It's even more annoying with a manual transmission. Thanks for the video topic!
They do this with the manual??? I can't believe that!
WoOsKii 1 yes, my dad's bmw has it and it's the dumbest shit, but at least it doesn't work if it's below 4°C outside and if you don't let go of the clutch pedal, so if you stop briefly leaving it in gear it doesn't shut off
That would make you use MORE gas!! I've been told over and over by several mechanics and others over the years that its easier on gas to leave it running if its a short stop..so red lights and stop signs and it shuts off would piss me off to no end!! What if at a red light someone is approaching your car to jack it and oh..oops..cant floor it and get away coz the damn thing isn't started!! That short hesitation could mean life or death!! What a dumbass idea!! Glad you are putting this video out!! Thank you!!
Just fyi, if you happen to have your seatbelt unbuckled and a carjacker opens your door the jeep will automatically go into park...
I hate it in my 2017 focus. My 2004 truck is older than the a.s.s. garbage. I haven't tried yet but I'm sure you can pop the switch out and shunt it with a small piece of wire. I don't know what that will do to the warranty or if it will pass inspection though.
Auto stop/start blows goats. It was a happy day when I installed an eliminator from TRL Automotive on my F150. Best $90 I've ever spent on the truck...
Does the AC stay on when that happens? I can see a few issues with this just for a tiny amount of fuel saved....I had heard the second battery was very expensive but have not looked myself...
It still blows but no the ac starts getting warm.
In some situations stop start will save fuel. Like LA or New York. But in most other situations other then large city rush hour it’s not going to. Plus the extra ware and tare on the engine is dumb. Also places like Canada or in Alaska with the cold temperatures in winter. That would be really hard on the engine. I think the JL tazer is the way to go. Yeah it costs more but it has lots of uses. Can adjust your tire size, gear size, tire pressure warning turn off the start stop and even out on a light show. If you will be upgrading or changing tire sizes it’s handy being able to adjust your speedo yourself.
Just wondering, how do you change gear ratios "electronically"? What do you mean?
Just a calculation so your speedometer is still correct.
I dislike the auto start/stop on my 2018 JL Jeep Wrangler. It's a major annoyance to me and not a fan of the delay on the restart at signal lights as you mentioned. Do we really have enough data on how well the starter will hold up with the constant starting?
Mine sorta stopped working all by itself, I noticed it about 6 months ago or so, I checked all the wires and everything seems connected and fine. It just says "stop/start not ready" all the time. Mentions nothing about charging or anything like that. I wish I knew what keeps it disabled.
I've never owned a vehicle with the auto start- stop, but I've driven a few rentals that had it and do not like it.
Does it save fuel? Probably some, but realistically not a lot. That and how is it not murder on the starter?
I hate the Start Stop feature on Jeep Wrangler. I am researching buying a 2020 and I did a test drive. If I ever decide to get rid of my 2016 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I will disable the Start/Stop on my new Wrangler.
Hey Matt I’m kind of like you. Not crazy about the feature at all. I imagine there has to be gas savings or why would they do it? But I don’t like the additional where in tear on the starter. Another thing I’ve noticed on vehicles that have this feature Is when sitting at a set of lights And the engine shuts off the AC gets warm!
Yes it does
Dumb electronic features. Fuel injection is all the technology I prefer in a Jeep.
Also a good radio.

Agree, EFI is the off roaders dream come true. All those previous years of carb floats on steep hills and altitude in mountains lean/rich, temp or elect chokes etc. EFI is the ultimate. Vacuum or elect 4WD transfer case sucks, no hubs like Dumb Ass Dodge and Ford not to mention poor front hub designs that takes a good $2,200 to make right and the "automatic" this and that stuff. Really, they truly need to poll some of the Jeep owners before they push their inflammatory technology in drivetrain and functionality.
its direct injection now...
I don’t own an auto start stop equipped car but I’ve been in one and it’s annoying. If you live in a bigger city with a lot of stops, I think it could wear the starter our sooner which will not be the amount of fuel you’ll potentially be saving. I think it’s another little thing for people to be an aww over and buy the car bc of that feature..... maybe it’ll save you $5 a year in fuel if you drive a lot but I don’t think it’ll save that much
I did the hood pin method and used JLscan app to disable the warning light on the dash. JLscan is waaaay cheaper then the Tazer and it pretty much does everything the Tazer does.
What no steering wheel dance to disable.? The auto brakes on my new standard trans JK was very hard on the clutch. Just about burned out the clutch, before we learned what was going on and how to disable it. The long clutch pedal stroke is also a pain for off road.
I think in a big city were you have stop lights every half mile it might save some money. Does the AC keep working when it's stopped.
That could be a problem in like Phoenix in the summer.
It does not... starts to get pretty warm but if it gets too warm itll start and cool off for a sec. then stop again.
@@bleepinjeep LAME idea. About as lame as a new graduate student on his/her first year employed job at the EPA. Never set foot at a campsite let alone used a Jeep off the road.
Yes it saves fuel. In the long term. But it's only really necessary where you will be in heavy traffic or you have a lot of lights. The other option is to have a delay (10 sec or user adjustable) after you stop. All I can see is extra wear on the starter.
Auto start is just another example of how people don't look at the big picture. The fact the auto start is disabled when you have low fuel should alone be a hint that it doesn't save fuel. Even if it did the wear on the engine, starter, and other parts would end up costing more fuel and emissions in the manufacturing, delivery, and replacement of these parts. It blows my mind alone in the diesel world with the modern emissions, more time and money is spent repairing the systems then using the truck. Someone needs to do a study on how both auto-start and modern emissions effect the overall environmental impact.
Hi. What messages if any do you get when you disconnect the intelegent battery sensor?
roby14 I didn’t get a message but it also didn’t work
How much gas is it really burning idling the engine? It can't be much if hardly any at all.
If it saves fuel, then why do they make the feature turn off when your gas light is on? Hmmm🤔
are you sure there isn't an option in the overhead controls like the older jeeps had, where you check gas mileage and turn on/off auto headlights and auto lock functions?
Yes. Positive
Seems like battery and starter life will be compromised. Also what if the starter fails at the stop light? I think I’ll just stick with my old vehicles.
stop start vehicles use the alternator to start
Profit Lemon Not the JL. That’s why they have a “Heavy Duty Starter” as stated in the owner’s manual.
is this a required feature for the new Jeep Wrangler?... haven't looked at Jeep site yet but will want to avoid it if I can... also... I own a 99tj manual shift 4.0.... I can disable the clutch engage start feature from the fuse panel..... can you disable this miserable start stop feature thru the fuse panel?...
It is required, the ways listed in the video are the only ones I know of to turn off the ess permanently
I hate it, the car I drove would cut off the A/C at every light when it was 100 deg outside. If it saves gas, why does it not work when your fuel is low?
1) I don't like it, I forget to press it sometimes.
2) No I do Not think the short time the engine is off really is any significant gas saver.
3) You are using your Starter, Battery and Alternator more than usual, which puts more strain on your Engine.
4) So how is the Savings working for ya.
I hate it & I don't think it gives any added fuel economy. I tried these methods & it unfortunately disables the remote start feature if equipped.
When I was trying to hyper mile my Honda Civic I would put it in neutral and coast with the engine off. Especially if the red light was at the bottom of a hill. I would then wait until the light turned green to restart the engine. If the Jeep could do that, Then it’d probably make an improvement in fuel economy.
so basically the A! indicator is fine. ?
I found the best way to avoid these modern features is roll around in a xj zj wj or tj.
really dislike the idea of it, believe it may save fuel if your stuck on the free way in peak hour everyday for half hour or more but I do believe it wears engine bearings out faster wears out starter motors faster and shortens the life span of your battery
horrible idea all in all on any car
I also have a 2018 JL Sahara and I can't say that I like the start / stop feature, but after getting used to it, I don't really notice it anymore. I've not taken any measures to disable it and I don't bother to press the button to do so. I don't know if it saves gas or not, however I think it's interesting, as you mentioned, that the function is automatically disabled when you are low on fuel. If it saves gas, it seems odd that it would be disabled when you were low on fuel as that's when you would want any savings you could get. My guess is: It does not save gas, but it cuts down on carbon emissions, so they government / mfg want it in place and just say it saves gas as they think that will generate less resistance. Also, I would be interested to see any data on the cost of starter service visits in vehicles with a start / stop system intact vs. those same vehicles where it was disabled.
I would start thinking about it. Most engine wear occurs at start up which is why I use Amsoil in my engines.
My thought is if it saves gas, why not let it operate when the fuel level is low? Seems to me if it was a gas savings measure this would still operate to extend the range of the vehicle. I believe it to be a tree hugger option to not produce emission while at idle, and is the most annoying option on a vehicle.
I had a loaner while my charger was in for recall repair that had it, I think it was a jeep journey or something jeep only by name... It was annoying.. So I just power braked at every stop light.. thing didn't even have enough power to chirp the tires.
Should try this.
The fact that when the vehicle is low on fuel the ASS is disabled so ironic. This feature helps automakers meet emissions requirements on a large scale, and makes the dealerships money replacing starters far more frequently. For the consumer it’s an inconvenience that costs us money and downtime. Absolutely stupid.
My 2020 Cherokee has this and dislike it. I unplugged it at the battery. Does not come anymore but get a warning light.
Funny seeing people talk bad about this that don’t even own or have driven one.. it’s literally not annoying I don’t even notice is. The only time you would even notice it’s working is if you have the top off and you can hear the engine shut off which is actually nice..
Maybe in just used to it, but I don't have any problem with stop/start
I don't like this feature
if it's really saves fuel I don't know depends on the driving area
Like the Harley i rented in Las Vegas that shut off one cylinder at stops ! Very annoying when the whole bike vibrates like an old threshing machine .
Yes while the engine run out of balance and accelerates wear.
I actually have two different opinions.
1: This applies to all port fuel injection engines. I don’t like it because it puts more wear and tear on the starter. I also know it takes quite a bit of fuel to start an engine as opposed to the short amount of idling time the engine experiences during a red light.
2: This applies to direct injection engines. I like this system because it doesn’t use the starter to start the engine. Because it has injectors directly in the cylinder, the ECM reads which cylinder is closest to Top Dead Center on the compression stroke and fires the fuel injector and the spark plug simultaneously. This is a much better way to do stop-start systems. Although the small delay in initial throttle response would still drive me crazy. From a maintenance standpoint, though,
I would prefer the direct injection engine stop-start system or is rather have none at all, because I still doubt how much fuel it saves.
also if your starter is going to fail its better that it happen when your parked somewhere and not blocking traffic !
Cars no longer use more fuel to start than to idle. That went away with fuel injections arrival.
The starters are not standard they're designed to start the car countless times and it takes less than 10sec of idling to match 1 time starting in gas
Don't have it. Would never want it.
Agreed. Don't have it, and have zero interest in having it in any vehicle I buy. Will disable it ASAP.
Instead of not buckling up to disable the start-stop system. Disconnect the seat belt sensor. Although the seatbelt chime might go off. An idea? Hate new cars so I’m not sure how the system works. Something to look into.
I wish they made vehicles like the old days. My daily is an 80 k10 with 33”s and a 5.3. Idc about the fuel bc if I was, I’d drive my wife’s 18’ corolla. Everything is simple on my truck, everything works except the oil pressure and only when it feels like it. But buy a gauge and it’ll work
It’s handy in some areas we drive as we travel. I do have mine set to off via my TD2. Save gas? Who knows. Not why I own a Jeep. 😀
It probably saves fuel city driving with long waits at stop lights.
They annoy me a lot driving. I always think there's something wrong with the vehicle.
I think the primary reason they're putting them on is to wear out the engines so they can sell more cars. If this was not the case they'd also have electric oil pumps to keep oil moving when the engine shuts off.
I hate the Auto Stop Start. I don't think it saves much gas either.
It also doesn't work very well in the city when you get a bit of traffic. When you are in traffic it works the first time, but if you only move a little it doesn't give enough time to recharge the battery, so there really is no difference if its working or not.
Real question is why does the JL still have standard wheels on it ?
Are you doing a sort reader 😉😉😉
Increases fuel economy by about 5%. not that great if you ask me. doesnt really damage the engine either since its not a cold start every time, but I bet we'll begin to see some starter failures soon.
