Great mash-up of a travelogue, a cruising tutorial, and a boat design discussion. I really enjoyed every part of it. Holland looks like paradise!

Nice to see. I rented this exact boat for 2 weeks in 2018. It didn't have a stern thruster then.
Made a similar trip through Friesland and Groningen, great fun.

Wow look at you guys world travelers so cool 😎. We're on our albin 27fc stuck in Chicago waiting for the locks to open. When we were looking for a pocket trawler I came across the European boats they were exactly what we were looking for 😁. Really enjoying your trip looking forward to the next episode 👍👍

I love how this experience speaks to you. I grew up yachting in Friesland. My family is from there, and lots of relatives had their boats at Terherne or Sneek. We used to spend entire summer holidays cruising. I think it's the best kind of boating.

I have a Dutch Cruiser circa 1987 , 30 foot long so very similar to the model in this video. My understanding is that they were not built for long term living as the canal / narrow boats were in the UK. Having purchased and refurbished a small cast iron wood burner stove , fabricated an Indian Sandstone hearth , fitted flue pipe etc my next task is to convert the tiny WC compartment into a wet room/ shower room . I shall be watching your cruiser ideas closely

2:09 Build or buy? Good question. Here's my answer: I was dreaming about building a wooden sailboat for me and my kids. I asked tons of questions on the WoodenBoat forum and even bought plans. I was ready to go. Some wise person saw a fiberglass boat for sale and thought I might be interested. I had never thought about buying a boat, and I was kind of shocked they'd suggest such a thing. But he had a point: Buy a boat for now, while the kids are still young, and I can always build a wooden boat later. Best thing I ever did. I've spent a lot of time in the fiberglass boat with my kids as they grew up. I never did build that wooden sailboat, but now I'm dreaming about a smaller wooden boat. Or buying a larger fiberglass boat. Actually both. I'm just so glad I've had those experiences with my kids, and I didn't waste those years building a boat and not sailing with the kids. I hope to have grandkids, and then we'll see what happens next...

On my bucket list is to travel the Erie Canal. In a sailboat? Maybe, but you have to take down the mast. It's not really a sailboat trip. A nice trawler like that seems perfect. But how many boats can a person reasonably own?

New York State canal system is over 500 miles long and includes the Erie Canal (339 miles), the Cayuga-Seneca Canal (plus Cayuga and Seneca lakes-each over 36 miles long), the Champlain Canal (about 60 miles) including Lake Champlain itself which is about 126 miles long, and the Oswego Canal (about 23 miles) up to Lake Ontario, and many navigable miles of the Genesee River at Rochester and southward. The canals pass through beautiful Onondaga Lake, (about 5 miles long) and Oneida Lake (about 20 miles long) and smaller lakes like Cross Lake. It goes from the beautiful upper Niagara River near Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River at Troy in the east, to Lake Ontario in the north, to the Richelieu River and Canal leading to the St Lawrence River at the north end of Lake Champlain. It passes through large cities and small towns and beautiful open countryside. You can rent small diesel powered canal boats of about 33 feet with all you need. I will say this, the Dutch have a lot more density to their canal system that is so impressive.

Wow, this was amazing. I had never heard of Frisian language before. Thanks for the bits of history and geography. The place looks like a lot of fun.
Are there a lot of people who live on boats permanently? Are there laws restricting them at all?
What does it take to charter a boat? From what I understand, to charter a sailboat in the Caribbean requires an extensive resume of documented hours being a captain of a boat.

Hi Charles. Don't worry too much about chartering a boat in Holland. You don't need exensive resume or whatever.
If you can convince the charterer that you have some experience you will be fine.
Some companies require you to demonstrate your skills or take a short one hour course.
Drop me a line if you need help.
