I just bought this Ralph Aust razor, And Holy Kow ,, it is nice. Watched this video and was sold. I used it 20 mins after i got it and it is a smooth shaving machine. If you are on the fence about this razor,, Well jump off and get yourself one. I started with a razor from these guys and just graduated. I cant wait til tomorrow to shave again.. Thank You Matt for the video and new razor. Brian P. Greer
Great video. I bought a 5/8 Ralf Aust from you and I'm learning to shave with a straight. This video showed me it's alright to have stubble after the first pass - my mistake is trying to acheive close shave with a straight in one pass.
Matt hydrophilic vs hydrophobic. B.S Biology , geek, Razor Emporium subscriber and a straight razor newbie. DJ is awesome though she tells me not to share that information because she sometimes has a doppelgänger that is the complete opposite. Thank you for taking care of my razor issue and you truly earned me as a customer. Will you send me a shirt if you will. I would wear it here in Florida.
That is quite an interesting video. This shows me up close how to do a straight razor shave. I expect it does take a long time to learn how to do it well, and I'm not sure of how exactly to take care of the blade.
Just used my open comb Gillette DE that came in my WWI khaki shaving kit I ordered from you guys and WOW! It was my first time using an open comb DE and it mowed through my 6 day stubble like a knife through butter! Zero cuts, Zero irritation and it only took one pass and a few touch up swipes! Thank you Razor Emporium!
I have been using this for about 7 months and love it. Great shave at a great price and excellent for learning. I am looking forward to getting a second Ralf Aust razor and possibly splurging a bit more on it. I use it with a nice caffinated shave cream (though I forget the brand) and have never gotten a better shave. It is forgiving enough to use that even while learning I have been able to shave fairly quickly and no cuts or incidents any worse than a standard cartridge razor.
Ralf Austs truly are among the best straights out there. My Spanish point/olivewood takes keen, comfortable edges off any stone, and it’s one of my favorites in the collection!
Nice shave Matt💈💈 Tried a straight years ago, just took me too long, at that time, to get a good result. Wanted to get handy with one but no joy. Thanks for the tutorial and no color, I call it a success. Enjoy!
I have a scar on my cheek. Trying to improvise a razor blade into a straight razor when my Dorco travel razor got killed by a Humvee tire one time. So now in the field I use a different travel razor and is currently my daily driver only due to the fact I got deployed. I chuckled at the scar from shaving.
As for the blade angle, there is an old video here from Geofatboy in which he does a three pass straight razor shave applying an almost perpendicular blade angle. Seemed to work extremely well, so not sure about the old picture you refer to is that off.
BW, I have seen Geo on several occasions use that same “perpendicular” angle to perfection. He has a face made for shaving for sure. I think it must be that Euro heavy beard that supports his shave speed and angle??
Hi Matt- Great straight razor shave; thank you! Nice highlights of both the Ralf Aust and Wholly Kaw products. I hope you are doing well. Take good care and best regards, as always!
If you haven’t tried it, you can experiment with a butter knife; some hold a straight razor the same way. Definitely helps to safely build some off hand muscle memory!
Just go for it! Try an easy section like a cheek and then continue with your regular shaver until you build confidence. Keep razor flatter than it looks in tutorials and very little pressure
As usual a great video! I have been using a Dovo 5/8" Round point for about 6 months. Not every day but I try, at least, once a week. The only difference is that I have a full beard and shave my head. I have been experimenting with different soaps which leads me to my question. What were you rubbing on your face after the water but before the soap? The hair, especially at the back of my head, are hard to cut and need several passes. Maybe with the right preparation they will cut more easily.
Good video. True statement about exfoliating. I've tried/have a few straights. My favorite is the Boker Arbolito. True that you need to take your time and enjoy but there is a bit of a learning curve. As you master it, you get faster, but there's where the danger lies if you turn it into a rush. Lol. But it does take time to strop and hone the blade properly so it is a more time consuming effort overall but if you look at it as an enjoyment, time for yourself, plus I think it's a good thing for every man to learn IMO. At least treat yourself to a straight razor, hot towel shave from your local barber to feel the experience. Some say it gives the closest shave but not sure about that; I think with the great engineered aggressive safety DE razors out today, you can get just as close a shave.
If you take a machine sharp blade like that in a DE, and put it in a razor with no guard, i.e. a shavette - then you have your closest possible shave and also i will add, your most unforgiving! Straight razors are all different, depending on who honed them and how, on what - but they will let the odd lapse in pressure or angle slide before they cut you. Shavettes will not. T
Bought a brand new razor and it hardly cut my beard. My beard is very coarse but it should cut. Is it possible it wasn’t sent sharp? Certainly felt that way
Just starting out, & am finding that I don’t get quite as close a shave with the straight razor as my usual 2 or 3 blade one. Is this typical, or am I doing it incorrectly?
Hey, Matt, I like the way you CASUALLY describe the moment you got a GNARLY scar using a SR… all the while demonstrating shaving with a SR! 😳😬 It’s akin to a Harley salesman, on a demo, saying, “So, I broke my hip in three places after I fell off my “hog,” , but hey, hip fractures are COOL, right?” 😆🤣 Aside from that, SOLID video, my SECOND time seeing it, all the way through. 🤓 BTW, what’s a brother gotta do to get a T-shirt around here? 😩 (I fit an “XXL,” just in case! 😉) P.S. - Just noticed you no longer sell the 5/8” version of a “Ralf Aust,” which is a shame, since it’s the one you recommend for beginners. 😕
I have been using a shavette for the last 2 months and it's much better than a cartridge razor but the one downfall to the shavette was my hair got caught between the blade and the closure. I just ordered this straight razor from Razor Emporium today and can't wait for it to come in.
Hey, I just start watching your videos, and I realy like it... can you tell me witch razor is better, I know they are not top quality, QSHAVE Adjustable Safety Razor Double Edge Classic or FEATHER Hi-Stainless Double-edged Holder Razor Popular... I have been using razor blades with cartridges for 15 years, and your video made me change, and now I want to try double edging razors, so ai need your help... Thank you
So in one video you said to not rinse the blade after each stroke. Two reasons. Its carbon steel and water is its enemy. Second you risk hitting the faucet and damaging the blade. So why you rinsing? I'm confused...
He mentions in another comment a response about that; basically doing that isn't inherently terrible-it's just easy if you're careless to mess up the blade. For him, he's got the tools and the training to fix any issues, but for your average person cracking the blade against the tap will require sending it off to get repaired; so it's just not worth the few seconds it saves.
@@mafiacat88 Yeah and he keeps using the term honemeister which is a made up word for a made up profession that coincidently requires NO formal training! But dumb people fall for it.
Love your videos, but one constructive comment if I could. The original music was much better. It was upbeat and matched the energy better. This music is a bit dreary. IMO. I’ll be grabbing one of these razors btw..👍
It's funny to me that you say “don't always have time to use a straight razor” I can shave faster with a straight than I can with a safety. But I'm very used to my straight razors.
I’m starting to think that a great piece of equipment for a beginner straight shaver... is a goatee. I used a straight for a little while but gave it up when I couldn’t avoid irritating my skin, but I’m realizing all the irritation was around the divots in my chin. A goatee does help. I do a full shave with a straight and honestly, about half my time shaving goes towards the area that would be covered by a goatee. Also, that is where I get the most irritation; even when I used cartridges, so I may regrow mine from when I was in college.
My mask and chin area always suffered irritation. I now use olive oil for a pre-shave and hair conditioner to shave with. No irritation. What works for me might work for you.
I’ve always wanted to use a straight razor. You have convinced me to try. Great video.

Haven’t mustered the courage yet to shave with a straight. Someday!
Awesomeness!!
Nice shave Matt
I'm glad to see the facial hair returning. Great shave and I hope you're well

how was the shave with that straight razor you used
For a possible next straight razor shave, could you use a "new" Dovo or Boker and show the razor prep routine?
Thank you.
Yes!
Hydro-phallic 😂 If you know your Greek, I think he meant hydrophobic...
You make that look sooooooeasy !
I still a, reluctant to try the straight razor. I’m intrigued by the holy kow. The scents look a little strong, so I want to smell it in person.
They are on the more mild side if you ask me
Am first trying wholly Kaw soap.I’m really enjoying it. What is the price on the Ralph Auoght straight razor?
$125
$125 seems to be what it goes for most places. I got mine at Maggard and it was that price as well.
Bought a brand new razor and it hardly cut my beard. My beard is very coarse but it should cut. Is it possible it wasn’t sent sharp? Certainly felt that way
That's a common complaint of nee straight razor users. Takes time to get down the angle
@@RazorEmporium So it comes down to prep and angle? I tried a few different angles from as small as 10 to 30 degrees. No luck

You still do all cold water shaves?
Absolutely :)

Dare ya to do a 5/8 round point manscaping tutorial 😆 No balls! 😂
You said not to wash the later off with water because it causes your razor to start rusting

Holy cow do you spend an awful lot of time rinsing! If I rinsed as often as you it would take me over an hour to shave

Correct - but if I messed this razor up I can fix it with ease. The top 10 advice is general rules to live by for the average shaver.
