i always learnt that the knight moved forward one and diagonal one in an out ward way, never knew of the L or cared about it
actually that is precisely how the horse (yes it is called a horse in chinese chess) in chinesse chess moves, but with another rule that if there is a piece that is on the position of the first forward move of the horse, then the horse cannot jump over it.

Fixed a bug that lets the king and rook swap places under certain circumstances.
Peons can now properly go backwards
Queens been a little too strong so weve nerfed her movememt speeds by 50%
Rooks take a little too long to get out into the gameplay so weve aded a feature that lets them jump over their peonson the otherside one per game.

There are actually a ton of chess variations and a whole set of extra pieces in "fairy chess", like the nightrider (moves like a knight but can make as many jumps as it wants in the same direction unless it captures a piece) and the grasshopper (can move in any direction but must jump over a piece of either color to move, the piece it jumps over is unaffected but it can capture a piece in the place it lands), and the Anti-King (must remain in check, if you cannot move it to a spot where it can be captured by the opponent on their turn, you lose)

Make the knight a camel which moves like a knight but with a 1 square range enhancement, and make custom promotions, like a piece that moves like a queen and a knight, add a piece called the Mortar also, which looks like a cannon and can only be obtained through promotion, it can move like the camel, knight, and queen.
