I would suggest an alternative to smashing is to wait for 40 min and keep the dal on low flame when everything is mixed to cook it well and will make it soft as well.

If 2tbsp of salt is added at the time of soaking the dal-rajma, or for that matter any pulses, washed and boiled with water & salt the next day, they will become soft sooner.
