Visit the Vieste co-cathedral to witness the splendor of the Apulian Romanesque architectural style. This magnificent cathedral, which honors the Assumption of Mary, was constructed while Vieste was a Latin Catholic diocese.
The bell tower of the cathedral was redone in the Baroque style in the 18th century and has a basilica layout with a nave and two aisles. Pope John Paul II recognized the co-lengthy cathedral's history by designating it a minor basilica in 1981. Its brown color distinguishes it from the surrounding buildings and landscape, and its triangular shape is complemented by three bastions on the northern, eastern, and western corners. The castle overlooks the calcareous rocks of the coast, offering a stunning view of the sea.
Despite suffering damage during the struggles between the Papacy and Federico II in the thirteenth century and attacks by Venetians, it remains a prominent landmark in Vieste, and is currently used by the Italian Navy.
