    I've never seen a match where Ben hit so few winners. The first set the error rate was on par, just Boss was building up to something, making errors in the process, while Ben was doing nothing but waiting for the opponent's mistake. His usual drop shot - passing shot / lob combo wasn't there. By the end of the set he seemed to be reminded of it but three successive attempts to drop shot failed. I don't know what was going on there. Perhaps Boss reacted too quickly to some of the early drop shots or Ben just knows he's quick and good at volleying but for sure Boss is not good at making overheads, so I don't know why Ben didn't try more.
    In the second set Ben lifte his game, hitting more winners (unsurprisingly 2 lobs) and fewer errors. Boss however raised the bar hitting 7 more winners and 3 fewer errors, so the result remained the same (27-14 and 26-15).
    A pattern we've seen before with Ben is that the opponent's errors are more often in the first 5 shots (today 17/25) and his own errors more in the rallies (13/20).

    The Boss lives up to his name! Very impressive in his tactics. He understands spacing and how a player moves. In other words, he knows when to go for shots to the open space and when to go "behind" them. He can move MEP laterally as well as up and down. If someone wants to learn tennis technique, this is definitely not the match to watch - but if you want to watch perfectly executed tactics and decision-making, this is it. 👍

      I still think MEP is slow as treacle around the court., that kinda of makes his opponents feel like they are playing dead or the ball has stopped in their tennis and they're having trouble trying to start the ball up again (lack of momentum).. He reminds me of the Iceland magma just slowing ooozing along the ground. Just creeping slowly along...... I'm waiting for his match now with Ian. MEP has too much time in the world on the ball. What's likely to happen soon as Ian rushes up into the net on MEP. MEP just lobs it over his head and puts Ian in trouble. The problem with Ian's slices off his forehand side is that they are just too high and floaty in the air..... So its not a very good slice if the ball is always going high in the air Like Mary Poppins going to the moon. You don't want your slices to always float up high in the air. So I think his slice needs working on.

      Not until we see a couple of matches first from these two to play together for the first time to see how well they do handle each other to see if they are going to play just safe pickelball tennis or play aggressive I don't know how Ian will handle Ben's pushing feather duster tennis. But Ian will need to watch out for the backhand passing shot. Ben sends up alot of
      high loose balls and it will be interesting to see what Ian does with those high loose balls. Is he going to put them away or just let them bounce.
      But after seeing a couple of matches from them, then we will be able to get a clearer picture. We can do stats and stuff of them playing with other people in matches to get some idea of their playing styles they like to use with others, but the match is all about these two and their performance on the court when they do start playing the match.

    MEP had a solid performance, as usual. But for Boss to beat him so convincingly: 1) Both implied that they'd played a few times before, so that Boss knew MEP's game. This is my pet peeve about defensive players like MEP, is that they are just playing such a novel game, that even though you could figure out how to play them and beat them if you played repeatedly, it often takes more than a match to figure that out, so it's the NOVELTY of the style-of-game that you're really competing against. Or so I tell myself... 2) But MEP will always find out how solid his opponent really is, and Boss is SOLID!!
    (--On his serve, if Boss kept his tossing arm up until his hit forced it down, and delayed his rotation, he'd easily add 10 mph to his serve, but other than that, great to see Boss so solid, great stokes, especially how far down he was on most strokes. Beautiful game and great, strong footwork. He's working his a** off but making it look so easy--?Fed).

Showing a 7-month old MEP match (in which he loses easily to a lefty) just a week prior to ET publishing the MEP/Ian match is sure to tip the odds more towards Ian. It is interesting to note that Ian has been publishing his training/practice episodes to show his preparation for MEP. However, very little from MEP showing his recent preparation for the match with Ian. Although I enjoy MEP's ability to defeat more traditional players, I still think Ian has a clear advantage, due to his net and overhead game, and to his improved backcourt game.

    Boss has all the game components necessary to beat MEP:

    2. Patience
    3. Consistency
    4. Accuracy

    6. Confident Net play
    7. Enough Power
    If a player lacks ANY one of these components, MEP becomes a lot more difficult to beat.
    As a coach, if I were to advise MEP on where he needs to improve to make life tougher on Boss (and similar players), it would be these 4 things:
    1. Better DEPTH on neutralizing groundstrokes
    2. Greater ACCURACY of groundstrokes WHEN ON THE RUN

    I can't see why players who are 4.5 would have problem with players like MEP. MEP shot doesn't have pace, so if you're 4.5 you should good enough to take his ball on the rise and not blast it back but with good stroke mechanics should be able to easily give him back balls that are deep and more pace than he's comfortable with. And eventually he'd give you a high ball or short ball, and you just finish it. This is not easy to do if your stroke mechanics is not good, but I would think with 4.5 rating, that should not be a problem.

      Everyone thinks this until they play him. Then, they realize how much they rely on the pace from the incoming ball to generate their own pace. Having to generate all your own pace throws a lot of players off. Plus, MEP likes to hit to the open court almost every time. Plus, he's great at absorbing your pace so that again you have to make your own pace on almost every stroke. This can frustrate a player and wear them down. I agree, if your game mechanics are solid, if you are well rounded, if you are in good shape, and if you are patient you should have no real problems with MEP. But, many upper level players like to bang, bang, bang, rinse and repeat.

    • @sportscastercanada
      @sportscastercanada 3 года назад

      MEP has to be near perfect with his unforced errors because he has horrible technique and zero pace. He has good speed/strong endurance, and usually places his weak shots very accurately, but when he’s off like in this video, his game is between a 3.0 and 3.5.

    • @arvinsingh3637
      @arvinsingh3637 3 года назад

      @@IamnotJohnFord totally agree that players generally like and need pace. Constantly trying to create your own pace is not always easy. And yes, that can certainly expose bad mechanics.

    Finally a good example why people should take tennis lessons. Watching MEP play he actually has very good footwork, keeps his eyes on the ball at contact, but without proper form and understanding of court positioning it will never be enough against someone who actually invested some time and money into learning proper tennis.

    Strange game, from my desk Ben looked unusually anxious. In the post-match interview (great idea by the way) I understood that MEP didn't think his A plan could win so he tried new things. I fully support that search. It's difficult at first. When you only have one plan you don't have to think much. When you have more options, you have to think which strategy is better and that isn't so easy :) But it will pay in the long run

    good game by Boss. Clean technique and smart strategy. But I get a bit bored by watching MEP pushing balls as I don't see any improvement in his game since last year, nor can I discover anything new in his game that would enrich me as a Tennis player.
    Well, I get it of course: MEP has defeated many players that seemed way more advanced than him, almost like if a bloody beginner is defeating seasoned, well trained players easily. That of course must have excited many - maybe including myself. The oddly playing underdog beating the shit out of some Tennis snobs.
    Meanwhile however, it's just frustrating to watch him not improve. It seems to me his training is more focused on solidifying his odd, autodidact technique, hoping for a miracle, which however ultimately means he's solidifying all the wrong moves, the wrong technique. It's a dead end. In the long term this will hinder MEP to make substantial progress. That would be a pity as for sure he's a Tennis talent and more importantly he seems very passionate about this sport. And he's also young enough to still continue playing Tennis for many decades. Hence maybe an effort worthwhile to learn play Tennis.
