  • The architect of experiments to detect microbes that went to Mars in the 1970s says they showed life on the red planet.
    spie.org/as - SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation
Gilbert Levin has a long history in space biology. In 1965, he served on the Planetary Quarantine Advisory Panel commissioned by NASA, then chaired a NASA-sponsored committee recommending experiments for the Biosatellite, was principal investigator on a NASA-sponsored Return Mars Sample study, was a co-investigator on Mariner 9, and was a member of the NASA-sponsored Mars Oxidant Experiment on the ill-fated 1996 Russian mission to Mars. However, it is on his 10-year stint as Experimenter of the Labeled Release life-detection experiment aboard the 1976 Viking Mission to Mars that he makes his claim for having detected microbial life on that planet. In other projects for NASA, Levin's team developed and instrumented life-detection experiments based on photosynthesis, metabolic uptake of essential elements, and the detection of ATP by the firefly bioluminescent assay.
Chairman of the Board of Spherix Inc., which he founded in 1967, Levin directed the company's R&D programs with emphasis on innovative bio-technical processes and products. His inventions include wastewater treatment processes, rapid methods for microbial detection and identification, low-calorie sweeteners, and pharmaceutical drugs. He has published more than 120 papers in scientific journals, and he has received over 50 patents.
Levin is currently Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University, and Honorary Professor of Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham (UK). He has B.E. (1947), M.S. (1948) and Ph.D (1963) degrees in civil and environmental engineering, with minors in public health and chemistry, all from The Johns Hopkins University. He served as public health engineer for the states of Maryland, California and the District of Columbia before founding Spherix. He has been a trustee of The Johns Hopkins University, is a member of its National Advisory Council for its Whiting School of Engineering, and served on the National Advisory Council of the Hopkins Sheridan Libraries. His awards include the NASA Public Service Award, the Newcomb-Cleveland Award of the AAAS, and the Whiting Medal from Johns Hopkins, where he was also given Distinguished Alumnus status. With memberships in the Sigma Xi, various professional societies and the Cosmos Club, he is listed in "American Men and Women of Science," and in "Who's Who in America."

Great video. It's really unbelievable that in the last 48 years not a single space agency has followed this up. "Is life on other planets?" is the most important scientific & philisophical question we can ask. And yet not a single space agency is willing to ask it. Instead we get endless of photos of rocks.
I have tried to get details on these experiments in the past & this video never came up in any Google or RUclips search results. I am really glad it was suddenly recommended by RUclips for no reason.

Asked a large language model to come up with a song for this unsung hero. It came up with the following tribute:
"The Mars Man (Gil's Big Dream)"
    (Verse 1)
He sent his probes to the red planet, so far,
Through dust and space, in his cosmic car,
Gilbert Levin, with a heart so bold,
Told the world that Mars might not be cold.
In the land of dust, where no plants grow,
He looked for life, he wanted to know,
Not a rock or a stone, but something alive,
"Just give me a sign," he'd say, "I’ll make it thrive!"
    (Chorus)
Oh, Gil, the Mars man, with a twinkle in his eye,
You sent your tests to the stars up high,
You found a hint, though they didn’t agree,
“Could it be life? Or just chemistry?”
But you didn’t back down, you stayed on the case,
A humble hero from the human race,
Now we sing a song, to honor your dream,
For Gil's big idea, it was truly supreme!
    (Verse 2)
You heated the soil, and CO₂ did flow,
But some said, "Oh no, it’s just minerals, bro!"
But you stood tall, with a scientific grin,
"Could it be life? Well, let's dig in!"
You didn’t shout loud, or claim you were right,
Just quietly waiting in the quiet night,
But now the world knows, though it took some time,
That your Martian quest was truly sublime!
    (Bridge)
So here’s to the guy with the vision so wide,
Looking at Mars with a gleam in his eyes,
Through Viking’s dust and the red soil’s heat,
He saw a future where life could compete.
Not just a dreamer, but a man with a plan,
Sending us messages, yes he can,
"Life on Mars? It's not so far,
You’ll see the signs if you just raise the bar."
    (Final Chorus)
Oh, Gil, the Mars man, with a twinkle in his eye,
You sent your tests to the stars up high,
You found a hint, though they didn’t agree,
“Could it be life? Or just chemistry?”
But you didn’t back down, you stayed on the case,
A humble hero from the human race,
Now we sing a song, to honor your dream,
For Gil’s big idea... it’s still our theme!
    (Outro)
So raise a toast, for the one who believed,
In life on Mars, though the world wasn’t deceived.
Gilbert Levin, you sparked a new light,
And we’ll keep looking to the stars, night after night.

Even though the Viking experience will certainly never give us an undeniable proof of the existence of Martian life, it could in any case push Nasa and the many private companies that wish to go to Mars to think better about the problem of human contamination. If the probes are sterilized for the moment (but never as well as for the Viking, the authors recall), it will be difficult to do the same with a cargo of humans.

Upon further reflection, if there were microbes that ate your "radio active carbon food", what would be their "natural" food source on Mars? Would it not be necessary for at least some of the Martian microbes to be photosynthesizing microbes like on Earth (i.e. algae, phytoplankton, diatoms) and capture their energy from the sun?

    1. The common story I always here from people who work in NASA is that they are always afraid that their funding will be cut if they make a mistake. It is really sad that they have so much fear of this happening that they won't take any chances.
    2. I don't blame them for being skeptical of the experiment's results since that is what they are suppose to do but it seems they wanted to shut this down anyway they could which isn't fair.

    • @derp195

I do blame them, because they set certain criteria for what they would interpret as a positive result, then moved the goalposts when the experiment satisfied those criteria.
