Thanks for watching. This Poulan Pro chainsaw only needed to have the fuel lines change, But after inspecting the Carb, It turns out it need more than just that. Авто/Мото
The Bob Ross of small engine repair.
lol.. thanks.
My wife bought that exact saw for me at a yard sale several weeks ago for $15.00 . Had to put a new carb and lines in it. The carb was a Hipa replacement one. Not an exact fit due to its throttle linkage setup. But manageable. Runs fine now. Good video
thank you Jim S.
got the same deal on one, haha. 15 dollars @ a yard sale
I've watched many videos that deal with this topic ,yours is the best. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this knowledge.
So nice of you thank you Don Kuwik
@@HomeGaragechannel great video. I would like to know what oil you can use in the 2 stroke chainsaw because I'm having a really hard time finding some decent 2 stroke motor oils for my 2 stroke generator at a point that I'm currently using Motul mineral 15w40 and any straight grade Sae 40 mixed with gasoline at the same proportion. Not the best thing to do but apparently it works, a little bit of visible smoke.
I have a little spark plug sand blaster that works well, have to use carb cleaner and air to remove all the grit.
that's a pretty good tip
Personally I always clean the plug first. Many places that sell plugs for chainsaws don't sell them separately but put them in a package with air filter and gas filter. I don't like buying things that I don't need.
that's a pretty good idea, thank you Steve Everett
Nice repair as always, it’s amazing what a spark plug clean can do, checking gapping is important too.
Love the spark plug tester.
I’m assuming the oil bar was oiling the chain, that little hole can get blocked with saw dust, another thing is importantly it doesn’t leak oil.
Have a nice Easter😀🇦🇺
thank you Rick Thelian, and yes it was oiling nicely
From what I have seen the spark plug usually is not the issue so I would check it later. But this is a great lesson and certainly should be considered when repairing engines of all types. Great job. Thanks for the video
thank you D Butler for your time
In my dads Honda GX35 4 cycle powered line trimmer I had to replace the spark plug because it was playing up like that, the plug was actually shorted out internally by a few thousand Ohms.
When I did a small automotive course at tech once they explained why they check the spark plugs for spark in a vacuum chamber after sandblasting them, it's because as in your case it might not fire in the combustion chamber despite firing on the tester under no vacuum.
The vacuum chamber simulates the combustion chambers environment !
that's pretty cool, I didn't know that. thank you Russell Booth.
PP4218 chainsaw you will either love or hate it. Speaking of spark plug, make sure you set the gap to .030" instead of factory setting .025 gap. These model are notorious for not starting after warm up and usuage due to spark plug issue. Also sometime they can be finicky with Champion spark plug, NGK spark plug do work well. If you have a good one, it can a real ripper.
thank you for the information Mickey Kim.
Gap to 0.30 and remove spark arrestor and she rips.
I agree on gap to 0.030
Isn’t it nice to see how folks maintain their saws.🤓
LOL!!
I tried building the original carb and the got a new one. It would run until I started opening the extra butterfly and then it'd lean out. I had a new plug in it too but the son-in-law said he got it running but he sure scarfed up the 261 as it went by. I'll never understand why they have that carb setup anyway but it's gone and I grin every time I think about it being somewhere else. Glad you got it fixed. Blessings!
after this video I will check the spark plugs whenever I have issues. Thanks!
no problem
The only problem I have had with my Craftsman chainsaw is the rotting fuel lines. This was caused by using ethanol gas. After replacing the lines, all I have used is non-ethanol gasoline, I don't even bother to empty the tank. It cranks after sitting for 2 years or more. I just shake it to mix the oil and gas again. Have good days!
that's pretty amazing. thank you Buddy Reed.
I’ve found over time that when things go wrong it’s generally user related. Yes quality and manufacturing isn’t what it used to be in this disposable society we live in today. If we take a few minutes to actually read the manual re the use and storage, our equipment will always work and not let us down. Just my opinion.
With my 025 Stihl chainsaw I had to replace the fuel lines and gromit, however it ran well for a few seconds before it kept cutting off. I cleaned the carburetor and I realized that I have to get a rebuild kit for the carburetor. I also need to replace the bar because it is bent but other than that I'm quite happy with my 32 year old chainsaw. I forgot to mention that I'm also using the original sparkplug from 32 years ago bro.
wow simply amazing! goes to show you what happens when you take care of them.
@@HomeGaragechannel you sure right about that bro👍👍
Today I picked up an old Snapper snowblower from the repair shop that my first job was at. So I got it to my place and gave the carburetor a good cleaning. Unfortunately the entire choke assembly was missing so the thing had no choke. I had to use my fingers to cover the air intake while I pulled to make up for that. The thing started and ran great, I’ll be getting those parts for it soon
very nice haul!
I clean sparks all the time. Otherwise, I would have to stock lots of different plugs, or run to the store a lot. Spark plugs last for several years. Think about a car going100,000 miles before replacing plugs.
you are correct, thank you Mike Spain.
I had one chainsaw that still wouldn't run after cleaning the plug. I put a new one in and it ran great. Usually cleaning the plug works fine.
Great point! thank you Brian King
Nice video very well done , and checking the spark plug is always good
thanks again.
I always learn something new here. Thank you very much.
Glad to hear it!
yep i would install a new spark plug plus very easy to cure most starting problems in my case when the fuel and spark and even compression and fuel delivery is good still and once done 9 times out of 10 it starts up for me and hardly any problems and it helps to reduce flooding too and i believe this video would help someone out if they had a McCullough CS-420-T 42cc 2 stroke aka 2 cycle engine with a 16" (inch) bar from memory which i have and yep some people say it,s complicated but yeah watching this video helps me out for sure.
thank you Patrick Stapleton for the information, and I hope so as well.
@@HomeGaragechannel my pleasure mate and yep very similar by design from my view but yeah it might help me out on a basic tune up one day etc.
Another good job HG 👍
Thanks 👍
I’m really enjoying your videos as I also work on chainsaws and other small engines. I have a little tip that I’ve done before and it works well. You can drill out the filter line hole in the gas tank so that all the fuel lines are the same size on those saws
thank you Hester's Workshop and thanks for the tip.
I really enjoy your videos as well. The more than entertaining, they are concise and informative. One question for now, where do you get (or how do you make) your fuel supply tank? i.e. the condiment bottle.
More questions to come this spring as I get my equipment out.
I get them from Amazon, there should be a link, in the description for the video.
Great repair my friend 🙏👍🙏👍
Thanks for the visit RayFpv
Yes I have same saw it’s been really hard to start but runs fine when you get it started any ideas your videos are great and very helpful keep ‘em coming
Thanks I appreciate it. IF the carb is fine, I would look at the Engine, it might be worn, so every pull, doesn't pull the Fuel from the Carb like it should.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks so much I check that out
I have a chainsaw like that. A friend found for me I am fixing up for me to use I am having issue with it also after cleaning the carb I will check the plug on mine again to see if I have carbon buildup or if I have the carb adjustments out of sort I hope 🤞
good luck with the saw
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you
I have lots of used ngk plugs for them and I use a very old champion spark plug cleaner and tester
I change after use and clean up and gap at .030
Great tip!
hey home garage. i recently got a kbl23a kawasaki trimmer. the engine was stuck with old sticky fuel. i got some degreaser inside the cylinder to break up the sticky old fuel. but when i took the cylinder head off the piston i had a 5mm by 5mm chip strait out of the BOTTOM CORNER of the piston there are no scratches on the cylinder wall. can i still run this engine as it is a very good trimmer and it will be hard to find parts
unfortunately, I don't think I would use the trimmer, with a chipped piston. I would consider replacing the piston.
your vids are supra entertaining, handy, and helpful.
Glad you like them!
Nice job. I'd clean the plug first. If no difference, then I replace the plug, & look for other problems.
me too Christopher Marshall.
I have similar problem with Poulan Pro 5020, where is starts then stalls. I have changed everything I can think of new carb, fuel filter and lines, air filter, spark plug, new fuel, and still have the same issue plus smoking more after the new things throwing at it. What else could do that? Bad fuel cap?
if the fuel lines, and carb have been changed, I would then try adjusting the carb to deliver a bit more fuel to the engine
great video mate keep up the good work. I'm a small engine mechanic and work on a lot of those saws and most of the ones Iwork on have lower than normal compression. Not sure what this is due to.
Cool, thanks, I would assume cold engine usage,
I would have kept banging my head against the wall fiddling with the carb. lol Where did they think that spark plug was going? Man, it was tight. Thanks Home Garage
I know right, Guess they didn't want it to fall out, while it was running.
Top of the morning
hello
How do you know if the chain is over tightened??? this one seemed like it was, or maybe I am used used to seen them being used a little lose.
care grab the top of the chain, and move it along the bar. IF it's hard to do, but it does move, than the chain is too tight
I have the Poulan Pro PR4218 and my problem is getting too much chain lube at just idling. I can see oil oozing out of oil port while it idles. I didn’t see any adjustment screw on bottom of saw. 🤷
it'd take that any day over the opposite situation of not getting enough oil
This saw is based on the HQ240/236/235 series. It actually has a better carb than the real deal. The low compression is most likely caused by the 2 plastic inserts in the cylinder along with a bad piston ring. The cylinders are usually in very nice condition still. Example: 574 19 09-01. Be sure to select the correct one depending on cubic inches.
thank you for the information
awesome video
Thanks for the visit
Also, do you have any idea why my throttle cable keeps sticking? When I rev it the rpms won't go back down. The throttle cable isn't the issue it's the little plate above the spring
is this on your chainsaw?
@@HomeGaragechannel Leaf Blower
if it's related to something on the carb, I would just replace it.
@@HomeGaragechannel I don't think it's the carb, the carb works fine it's just the throttle plate won't stay in the idle positions so I have to push it forward to Mannually idle it.
Ok I have a problem with this carb it's not on this chainsaw but a poulan pro weedeater and when I prime it it just leaks out the inlet so I need help with that if you can help thank you
sure, it means there's an internal leak inside carb, because it's not supposed to do that. The easiest thing would be to replace the carb, unless you're willing to remove the carb and find out where the leak Is coming from.
@@HomeGaragechannel i forgot to mention it does that to both the old carb and a replacement carb is there something else that it could be
yes, you probably have the lines on the wrong port then
Well at least you are doing better repair shops they are mostly in the repair business for high end stuff not the big box store items
you make a good point. I don't know who worked on this one but I'd like to know
@@HomeGaragechannel you are interested in the work some one else did because of the messed up condition.this machine was in I don't blame you for wanting to know that information
Would pull the stock plug and cleanse it will a mapp torch the same way you did. If it happened again I would buy a iridium fine tipped plug and not have to worry about the it again. All my equipment still have The plug that they came with except for my twenty year old Stihl FS-250 R brushcutter/trimmer. Just replaced the plug with a iridium plug and runs like new.
thanks!
@@HomeGaragechannel your welcome. I think the fine tipped electrode produces a very hot and reliable spark initiating a faster and more complete combustion. I do know is they are faster to start, quick acceleration from idle to top end. All around just alot better especially with lower compression engines. Can't go wrong with Bosch iridium spark plugs. Two cycle and four cycle. My sports car has noticeable power and torque gains in all five gears.
i had a crastfsman same saw as the poluan and how do i put a groment in the hole on top of the fuel tank
why did you do that?
@@HomeGaragechannel i accidentey drill a hole you know where the fuel line gose
I would like to know we’re did you get the spark ⚡️ plug tester 15:45 on your work bench? The one you showed in the video. I would love to have one of them.
sure here's the link, these are pretty affordable too.

@@HomeGaragechannel
Thanks your man I just ordered it
no problem and thanks for watching.
After using my chainsaw for so long it wants to die and act like it’s not getting fuel but after it cools down it’s just fine. Is it getting too hot? Should I increase fuel at H?
sure, I'd give it a try
Would you be able to make a video of how to put spring back in the boot of the ignition system? Mine came off while I was trying to change the Spark plug
I'll try and see what I can do.
How many turns on L & H speed adjustments?
the turns on this carb may not necessarily work for your machine.
Should I empty my fuel tank on my sthil FS 85 after use
I would, I do on all my stuff, I just pour the Fuel back into my Fuel container.
Only if it is going to sit for more than a few weeks imo. I would store it with engineered fuel, I like doing that better than storing them dry.
very true, engineered fuel is some of the best stuff.
I have a stihl bg56 which cuts out if the throttle is pulled, the carb is clean, it has compression and I cant find any leakes. Do you know what could be causing this?
Sure, the Carb might need to be adjusted , or the spark arrestor screen might be clogged. If the Carb is brand new, it might need the adjustment to work with a blower that isn't new.
@@HomeGaragechannel I cant find a way to get the spark arrestor out so I'm guessing it dosnt have one and iv tried adjusting the carb to give it more fuel but it stays the same. There are limiter caps on so I might try to remove them.
let me know how it goes.
@@HomeGaragechannel iv got 2 blowers with the same problem now do you have a video on how to remove the caps?
14:38 🤣😂
thank you Mr Merhtin.
Funny thing is, sometimes dirty spark plugs is why cars don't run properly. People don't try to clean it and just change the spark plug which is much more expensive.
Honestly wondering how the last person even torqued that spark plug in so tightly.
you are absolutely correct
I don’t believe I’ve ever run across a bad spark plug , just carbon up
come to think of it, I think it's only happen to me once, with an E3 plug
Great video, did you get your spark checker on amazon.
the "poorly" named Sparking plug tester, yes I did,
If there is a harbor freight store near you thats where I bought all of my spark checkers and they have worked for a long time
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank You wery much.
Nice video. Where did you get your little fuel squeeze bottle?
from amazon.
hi...what happens if i use 4 strok oil to mix gas for a 2 strok engine?
it would work, But it will probably smoke, and the concentration might be different, because it's not 2 cycle oil.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks!!
I have good luck with 0.30 cap on my poulan saws, 4218
good choice
I check the spark by feel lol
lol..
@@HomeGaragechannel no I’m serious surprised I’m not dead yet lol
Chain seems to be tight or the oil Port is clogged. Could just be me though.
Nice work
I think you might be right.
you should warn your friend about that carb. as long as it works it is fine but the plastic arm on the upper butterflys looks cracked. as long as it is still in place it is fine but when it breaks and falls off the engine won''t do much other than idle. they make a upgraded carb with all metal arm and linkage but usually about $20. for him it may be worth the $20 but i generally won't waste money on a cheap saws.
thank you for the tip crazzywolfe.
To ya
right back at ya.
I have got a smal engine from 1994 and it has got 95 psi. Is that good for its age?
what kind of small engine is it for? lawnmower engine, blower, edger or weedeater,
A weedeater with a metal blade.
(sorry for not specifying)
the reading isn't bad, for the age.
@@HomeGaragechannel good to hear
Once it hits 60-70 it is really not hard at all to replace old rings with new ones. Never hurts to clean out the exhaust ports while you're doing this too. I have a 2 cycle lawn boy from 1984 I have rebuilt a few times. Still love cutting grass with it. They just don't make like they used to anymore. Sadly i am on my last set of rings. Can't seem to find any more new ones online anywhere. Maybe ill get lucky and see a set online in the next few years.
I would first clean the plug, then replace it if that didn’t do the job…you know….waste not, want not. Poulan to me is right up there with the a Weed Eater brand, it’s a cheap chainsaw for home use only.
I know how you feel, thank you William Snow.
hey home garage can you did a video on a zero-turn mower or something similar
I'll try, thanks for the suggestion
@@HomeGaragechannel no problem
I think you have a very good chance of being a police hostage negotiator just give the police department your RUclips channel and they'll hire you on the spot
thanks
Working on it never 🤕
I remember when Poulans used to be great saws. Now its a bit dodgey
I understand that feeling too.
Where DID YOU GET The Plug Tester Man?!!!
there's a link in the description but I get mine from amazon. you can get them at most auto parts stores too.
Your missing step one taken the muffler off... and checking the condition of the cylinder and piston!! I wouldn't even bother working on thoses brand of chainsaws waste of time and effort and plus money for parts that's just me... good videos thought..
Great point!
The gas and oil caps on this saw get stuck and chain tightening knob is a joke
What is the normal setting for the H and L screws? I have the same chainsaw and I'm having trouble getting it to run.
No the setting I used are only for this particular saw. Yours may not be the same.
@Home Garage the only difference between yours and mine is that yours is a PP4218AVX and mine is a PP4218A. The carb on yours is identical to mine. I have a RUclips channel. I have a video about the chainsaw.
I'll check it out, thanks
I recommend the non ethanol pump gas ⛽
very good advice
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks man
no problem
Damn bro gotta put caps on everything why is that?
oh let me fix that. thanks
😂
And you also inspired my kid so thanks 🤣 But really you did so thank you so much
And or also there were micro cracks in it and it was arcing that’s more likely
