Episode 96: Patrik Laine Injury - Dirty or Clean?

  • In this episode, we discuss...
    Patrik Laine had to be helped off the ice following a knee on knee hit with Maple Leafs player Cedric Paré. The hit did not look good and neither does the injury. Sadly, Laine has not yet played a regular season game with the Montreal Canadiens, and it looks like he could be out for a while. We're hoping for the best, but it did not look good. To make matters worse, former 5th overall pick David Reinbacher also went down with an apparent knee injury. Let's just say that we and our fellow Habs fans are very discouraged right now. We're hoping for the best but it does not look good. Both players were seen leaving the Bell Centre with a knee brace and on crutches. The question everyone is asking is whether the hit was dirty or not.
    Should the NHL re-visit the pre-season format/rules? Are there too many pre-season games being played?
    Xhekaj took matters into his own hands and decided to stick up for his teammate by going after Paré. Many agree and believe that Paré had to expect someone (Xhekaj) to force him to defend himself after injuring a key player on the Montreal Canadiens roster. However, some do not agree with how Xhekaj went about it and are comparing it to the Moore/Bertuzzi situation. Which was one of the worst gestures and injuries to have ever happened in the NHL. Do we think that Xhekaj did the right thing? Was what he did as bad as some (very few) people say it was?

    In your opinion, was Paré's hit on Laine dirty?

      There's a comparable in basketball, you can't have your foot under a guy when he lands. Ankles give out spectacularly if you keep your foot there. Have to move it. Doesn't matter if the guys landing in the space you occupy. This guy doesn't use his knee, and Laine gets by cleanly. Defender trades a blow by for a dirty and dangerous hit that may end a career.

      Ok while we are having another look why don't you take a look at Pare and his knee just before contact he purposely bends his knee so he makes sure his k ee does all the hurting and removes it from the 50/50 chance on whos knee gets hurt. Give me your honest answer do you or do you not see what I am saying? And do you or do you not now feel like the chances of him not meaning to hurt the other guy maybe he was doing it because he knows that protects his knee (because it does) now yes thats fine so he did it to protect himself fine. My issue is this and this is fact by bending your knee forward that does protect you the problem with that is 100% by protecting yourself by doing that you are at the same time almost guaranteeing you hurt the other guy. If you want confirmation of this just ask the guy who probably taught him this, thats just a maybe but he was the best at that game just ask his coach the goon.

      @jimmyboy2165 ridiculous argument.
      Basic human biomechanics.
      He pushed off his right leg to try and get his body in front of the offensive player, which will of course cause the left knee ro automatically bend if he has any sense of balance.
      Go and try and move side to side and notice what your leg not doing the pushing does.

      @@alchemical.fitness I still play hockey, have my whole life, it doesn't matter how wide the attackers legs are set, I've never hit a guy knee on knee. Almost 40 years of hockey without injuring a player. Even when I played contact, I was always able to move my body to avoid dirty knee on knee hits.
      Your argument applies to open ice hits, but the league is tired of skilled guys with huge contracts and huge fan bases exiting their careers over those. Which is why players are expected "avoid" crushing open ice hits. Still a stupid argument?

    Why don't you see this every day in NHL games? Because they're NHL players. I've played a high level of hockey and what these guys are taught is to step up on the forwards on the blueline...but the result is AHLers trying to make an NHL team are dangerous to NHL players - period. I feel bad for both guys, I don't think its intentional, but it is an issue of talent. The AHLer is NOT going to let Laine blow past him when he's trying to make the roster. And Laine was wide coming across the blueline. Its a perfect storm. Im a huge Habs fan and it was a bush leauge play. No ones "fault" per sae.

    Bottom line a knee on knee hit is a dirty play no matter the circumstance which usually happens because the guy missed the check and stuck out their leg so the attacking forward doesnt dance around them making them look bad. Defending or calling it a nothing play is confusing but to each his own. When an opposing team puts out an ahl roster i think the other team should ice a similar roster the habs made a bad call putting out their top two lines. A hockey play that is a penalty is a dirty play come on man wake up lol.

    there is no clean knee checks. should be banned totally and when it happens suspensions must follow. knee hits is a serious thing for the careers of pro hockey players. Fans pay the big $$$$ to see them play not to be injured with a knee hit. NHL need to clean up this part of the game. No matter who uses the knee and injures a player there should be consequences like many games suspensions if the player is seriously injured. those injuris can end a career!!!!!!!!

    He stuck his knee out, an AHL / ECHL level plug took out a top 6 sniper for who knows how long.
    The refs should have a called a minor or reviewed the play for a major.
    Arber took matters into his own hands ( literally)
    Pare was a coward for not answering the bell, and lucky that Arber in his moment of rage kept his glove on, otherwise he’s be eating puréed food for the next 6 months.

    Remove Matthew from the Leaf lineup, do they easily make the playoffs? Yes, Matthew and Laine are not the same caliber, although they were drafted 1 spot apart.
    You add 2 more players (Dach and Laine) on your top 6.. and you’re saying it doesn’t make a huge difference? Again, remove two top six from any team and tell me it doesn’t make a difference!
    You want 35 more goals than last year? Again, you add Dach and Laine to your roster, and split them right in the middle.. 17 goals each. We good now?

    • @GETPUCKDPodcast
      @GETPUCKDPodcast  16 часов назад

      @yannirugby what are you talking about?
      When did we ever say the leafs would or would not make the playoffs if matthews is there or not?
      Last year, the Habs lost Dach for the whole season and did not have Laine as a 30+ goal scoring threat. The habs had one line. If any team wanted to stop them, they just had to focus on the one line. When the Habs acquired Laine, what habs fans were excited about was to see another potential 30+ goals, a new scoring threat, a more complete top 6 and a talented player like Laine in the fold.
      We never compared Laine and Matthews.
      Dach and Laine make a significant difference, but laine is likely out long term and Dach's potential is there but he hasn't stayed healthy enough to go into the season and definitively say, he will play to his potential.

    • @GETPUCKDPodcast
      @GETPUCKDPodcast  16 часов назад

      Additionally, when we said 35+ goals we were just referring to Laine's production. Dach's production was not considered the idea was to have 2 goal scoring threats in Cole Caufield and Patrik Laine on separate lines and on the PP

    Ive watched the hit several times and when the Leafs player shifts his weight while Laine is trying to split the D, You can clearly see the Leafs player sticks his knee out. Question for the GET PuckD Podcast. With Laine most likely out for the season Montreal will have about 19 million in cap space due to Laine and Price on LTIR, Do think Hughes and Gorton will look to bring in another top 6 forward?

    • @GETPUCKDPodcast
      @GETPUCKDPodcast  Час назад

      Well, they won't have cap space, but they will be able to go over the cap by 19.5 million. It will depend on how long Laine is out for. If there is a strong chance that he comes back before the season, then it would be wise to avoid going over the cap beyond Carey Price's contract.
      The last thing that Hughes and Gorton should do is make a panic move. They will likely stay the course and see what they have in Kapanen and see if Roy can step up.
      There is not denying that this is a big loss for the Habs, but they really should be careful to jump into anything. The Habs are not a Stanley cup team yet where they are 1-2 pieces away. Acquiring Laine was more of a "it's time to take the next step and thank the existing players" type of move.
      We will see what happens, and whatever does happen, we will cover it here. So make sure to tune in again

    They start squared up then laine changes to moves down the middle between 2 leafs and pare leans into the middle to close the gap as a reaction to Lanie sudden change. when he leans to the middle Pare's knee bends as it would any time you shift your weight from one side to the other. Laine legs are so far apart, its not possible for him to fit between the 2 leaf players without contact or closing his stance. Laine maintains a wide stance the whole time he is moving between the 2 leafs

    I’m a leaf fan and this absolutely kills me, I was actually really excited for Montreal and Patrick to have a new start, I think he’s a great player and this play was just a fluke play, both of there stances were already out, it just sucks that it was a nobody that put him out, and if that was Matthews I would be pissed aswell so I do get it, it’s a tough play to call but let’s not get stupid about it, he didn’t stick he’s knee out he’s legs were already wide and so was Patrick’s, he probably should of let him go by but there was just no room, I hope he’s ok because I really want him to do good for you guys, to be honest I’ve never even heard of this guy lol, not even sure where he came from, I think the preseason should be more for the kids to see how the do

      We love this comment, and we agree with you on all of it. Whether you're a Habs fan or a Leafs fan, the injuries that are starting to pile up against star players during the pre-season just hurts the overall game and league. People pay to watch the star players, the storylines, the rivalries, and so on.
      Obviously, we are not leafs fans, but we acknowledge and know how talented Matthews is, he is good for NHL and USA hockey. When he scores a goal against the Habs, we want to boo him and hate him, but we understand and see his talent. If someone injured him, it's bad for the sport.
      The Laine storyline with the Habs was/is one of the few storylines we were most excited for. So, it's understandable that Habs fans are upset and discouraged.
      Anyway, thank you for tuning in and for the comment
