Avant-tom, I have never responded to anything online before, but I will now. I rowed with Katelin for 3 years at UW and was a part of 2 of those National Championships. A coxswain is the most integral part to a winning boat and a successful team. Without her we would have been nothing. To say that a coxswain does not work is insane! That is like saying that your coach does no work in preparing the team, because they are not physically exerting themselves. Or its like saying a bench player for an NBA championship team does not deserve a ring because he did not play in the final series.
To your point, work is defined as activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result. A coxswain takes over all the mental responsibilities of the rowers. Everything from technical elements, motivational elements, and strategic elements and making those "game time" decisions that make or break your day. I emphasize "your" here because the rowers depend on those leadership skills and decision making responsibilities in order to achieve the optimal boat speed and the desired outcome. A coxswain exerts themselves in a way that benefits the team to achieve their purpose and hopefully the best result. You may have rowed for 4 years in high school, but you never understood the sport and what it means to be a teammate and a champion.

you're talking about giving a medal to someone who does zero work.

according to the definition of work, which you are free look up in the dictionary, it is a straight up fact that cox does zero work. ALL of the work that moves the boat is done by the rowers. When is the last time you saw a cox throw up at the end of a race huh?
