    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Curley's wife (Sherilyn Fenn) interrupts George (Gary Sinise) while he's working and starts to seduce him.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered.

I know a lot of people probably hate Curley's wife, but I honestly feel very sorry for her. Sure, she's smug, arrogant, lusty and irritable, but can you blame her? She's in an abusive/possessive/empty marriage with a smug, selfish, possessive asshole who doesn't let her talk to any one but him, and even then he's not nice to her. Before any of you come at me with him being vengeful and grief-stricken when she died, I think it was more of him feeling like a prized possession was stolen from him. Curley already has a temper and picks fights constantly over nothing, so I don't think he's above going to the extent of murder if someone stole from him.

The whole point was the fact that she could be trouble. And no one wanted anything to do with her because of the consequences. She could have been innocent for all they cared but the fact that she had a man was the reason why she was trouble. Remember the time period this is based on. Behavior like hers wasn't really praised.

You have to admire the character a lot. He gave up a good bit of his early life just to take care of Lennie when he had no real obligation to do so. He could have abandoned him at any time but he chose not to. Even when he shot him, he was ironically only doing it to protect him from an inevitably worse kind of death.

This scene wasn't in the book, a lot of scenes with Curley's wife aren't in the book, but they're really well written and play to her character very well in my opinion. This scene shows how flirtatious and lonely she is when Curley interrupts them, and in a later scene it shows how lonely she really is. Though Steinbeck didn't give her many scenes, and the writers of the movie had little to nothing to actually work with on her character, they were able to add in more scenes and cjange a few other scenes in very good ways. In my opinion, her character is explored more in both the sense of her loneliness and her flirtatious manner. Really shows the talent and time that went into it.

At school my class had to watch the whole awesome book and movie then do an exam entirely focused around how curleys wife expresses strong feelings and attitudes. I literally wrote down 9 pages worth of information about that character and we still never know her real name.

The only character I didn’t feel heartbroken for in this book/movie was Curley. Everyone else just had such a hard, lonely, hard life where all they wanted was a damn chance to live a happy life.
We all think about Lennie (and rightly so as he had it worst of all) but George has to give up his whole life to work and look after Lennie, and Curleys Wife has no one to even just talk to.
