    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
George (Gary Sinise) takes a dead mouse away from Lennie (John Malkovich), causing Lennie to cry, but promises to one day buy him a puppy.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered.

From the book, I love how Steinbeck shows a strong sense of isolation with just a place George and Lennie travel to. Soledad.

I remember reading this at school. The movie was a good rendition, but I have yet to see the original. It is a film about loneliness and the need to belong in the time of desperation (it was the great depression), and the finding of companionship between two men that was rather like brotherhood. It is deeply moving and sad mainly because of the lack of understanding of Lennie's condition and the overwhelming danger it puts them in. John Malcohvich delivered a great performance.

I first saw this when I was 8. Never felt that Lenny or anyone else with that condition was the object of ridicule. Thought nothing of it. Then my 10th grade English teacher told us all "Please. Be kind to Lenny." I tried so hard not to laugh out loud. I put my head on the desk and covered up. The teacher told me to watch the movie or get detention. I told him I'd take it.

This scene was sad, in both the book, and the movie. We watched this in class (Yay, more people from english) and I went 'Aww, Lennie don't cry.' under my breath. I was mad at George for a while after that, honestly.

This is late but sometimes you have to be tough in order to get a point across. As someone who adores Lennie's character, this scene broke my heart. But I understand george had to do it because it's a dead mouse and Lennie could get sick. It could've also been perceived as strange by then boss and the other ranchers when they arrived to the ranch.
