She helped Harry fall in love again. But also made him realize that he should allow Veda to be a child without laying so many adult responsibilities on her. She also taught Veda about womanhood and that she truly loved her & cared for her. She came into their lives at just the right time.

I don't think Harry made Vada "grow up," or had her do any "adult responsibilities." BUT I do think either he ignored her and he was not paying attention to what was going on in her world. For Harry, as long as she was healthy and alive that was all that was important to him. He lived and died (no pun intended lol) by his funeral parlor business and threw all of his energy into it, semi-ignoring Vada and relying on his mother to take care of her but when she got alzheimer's and his brother Phil can all do so much. Shelley was a maternal figure she needed even though at first NOT wanted, and only wanted her to be a friend. But Shelley fell in love with Harry (obviously), cared for Vada and felt welcomed by Phil and I'm sure Grandmoo would have liked her if her mind was clear NOT suffering from Alzheimer's

It would be traumatic I would think to live in a funeral home. That big old mansion house, they lived on the top floor. The basement was where they prepared the bodies and the main floor used for viewing rooms and funerals. Godawful to live there. It was so hard to watch this movie again, as an adult. My son lost his best friend when they were in 3rd grade 😢, very suddenly from a virus. He was with him earlier in the day, same day he died. I remember the bus driver telling me my son was laying on the seat, his head where his friend used to sit next to him, crying to himself in silence. He refused to let any other kids sit with him. And when he would get sick with a typical virus himself, he thought he was going to die so I would sleep with him on the couch. He was somewhat of a hypochondriac growing up not only because of the sudden loss, but because the day his friend died the boy was complaining to my son about cramping in his hands. He replayed that day so many times thinking he could have saved him somehow. The boys fingers were stuck / cramped but they still did their secret handshake before departing that day not knowing it was their last moment together. The school counselor helped my son a little, but looking back I wish I could have done more for him.

@Leanne0531 That's true. I was very sad too but, I guess in some ways, it was Thomas J.'s fault that he died since he kicked the beehive being unknown why he did it whether it was because he wanted to see if the mood ring was under it, or he kicked it to see if the bees were in there, or if he was just bullying them since he came up with the idea to knock the beehive off the tree branch. However, between Thomas J. and Vada's grandmother Gramoo, it should have been Gramoo being the one who passed away instead for one thing, she was very old who had Alzheimer's Disease and she was mostly a troublemaker on the film.

I was reacting so, so similarly to Veda. I knew he was gone but I just couldn't stop the crying, and the viewing was also the hardest part in my case, just like for Veda. I also lost another best friend to a shooting at w club, he was one of the bouncers. Didn't fully hit me until the memorial service, and I was a complete wreck. With my friend who died of cancer, we all knew it was coming. With my bouncer friend, it was so unexpected and sudden.I doubt I will ever watch this movie again....
