61 year old professional kidney stone passer. 1st stone in 1989. 5 at one time. Since, I’ve passed 38. Largest stone was 11MM. Promethazine and pain meds are a savior. Be smart with the pain meds and stop taking them after passing. Takes a few days to get out of your system but it’s worth it. One occasion I was on 10/600 opiates for 4 months. Man that was pure hell coming off of those after 4 months. Couldn’t sleep for 4 days and night sweats were brutal. I can definitely understand how people get hooked on opiates.

Bless you heart. I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. I’m a 61 year old man and currently I have an 8 mm stone in my right kidney and a 3 mm in my left. A slight infection has set in and the urologist put a stint in my right kidney. Lithotripsy is scheduled a week from now. Just wanting to get this all over with. Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video.

I've had 27 stents, a few nephrostomies and other procedures.
My advice would be save any stones you pass so they can have some pathology done on them. This will tell them what type you have so you can change your diet to help prevent more (unless you stone form for a clinical reason)

Sorry to hear you had such a rough time. Sounds like some of your issue was due to the anesthesia. I had my first lithotripsy done about three weeks ago. (soundwave, not laser)
I have a lot of trouble with anesthesia, ( I get very aggressive and violent when I wake up) so I talked my Dr. into letting me go through it without putting me under. I only let them give me a tiny bit of Versed and a little bit of Fentanyl. Only because the Dr. and anesthesiologist kept saying it was going to be very painful. Once the procedure started, I realized I didn't even need that. The soundwaves felt like no more than someone thumping me in the back with their finger. Only noticed some slight discomfort in the kidney about the last 5 minutes. I was slightly sore for about 2 days afterwards but only if I sat in certain positions otherwise wasn't noticeable. Having my other kidney done in a few more weeks and will not be taking any meds at all this time. Was able to get dressed and walk out of the surgery center 10 minutes after it was done. No recovery room. Only took 1/2 hydrocodone as a precaution when I left the center and that was all. Never needed anything else.

Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s so helpful! And I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this, I totally relate to your situation. I’m 24 and have passed kidney stones since like 2014, it’s rough! But the stone that’s causing my issues right now is about 8-10mm large so I had to get a nephrostomy bag in my kidney so my urine can drain and I’m on a waiting list til late April to get lithotripsy done. I’m nervous about it since I’ve always passed stones on my own but this one is not gonna go down on it’s own.

7mm kidney stones and 1 10 mm stone in his left kidney and 11mm in right kidney and the stones are from calcium oxalate which are sooo spiky and causes soooo much pain and blood he is in pain from 8 years and we just don't know what to do and he is only 31 so he didn't want surgery really worried about him 😓

@@anmolyasirbutt2584 I’m so sorry to hear your husband is going through this, I know from experience it’s very painful, but he should do lithotripsy, it’s the least invasive surgery possible that will break up the stones in his kidneys and that way he can pass the fragments. Ultimately, that will help with pain and kidney/urinary function. Hopefully, you can find a good urologist in your area that you can consult to see what procedure they think is best for tour husband, but overall the safest and quickest recovery is lithotripsy. Hope he can recover very soon and feel better 🙏🏻

After my Lithotripsy I was in the waiting room waiting for a ride home the pain started and I was on the floor. They had to put me back on iv and I stayed overnight. It took many hours to get enough pain meds to stop the pain. Turned out I had a big bruise on my kidney from the blasting.
I recently had the other procedure, a ureteroscopy and it wasn't as bad ( I at least went home the same day) but the pain during urination for a few days was intense. I was basically in bed for 4 days. The pain killers got me through 2 days at least.
There is another pain killer that helps - Torridol which is a prescription NSAID (like inuprophen) which is not an opiate and works well with stone pain. You can only use it for up to 5 days for other reasons however.
It's very unlikely you would develop a dependance on opiod pain killer in just a few days. Especially if you are just taking enough to dull the pain.

The nausea is from the anesthesia. I get very sick when waking from the anesthesia put in my body. Some people have no issues with it and others like you and I, wake up vomiting for hours after having it. If you ever have to go under anesthesia again, let the anesthesiologists know that you get very sick from it. He will give you a nausea meds prior to surgery to prevent you waking up sick. My last surgery, the anesthesiologist gave me a shot, pill and patch which seemed to do the trick. I didn’t vomit once. So, just make sure to tell your anesthesiologist the next time you have surgery and they are always happy to help accommodate.

Had the procedure on a Wednesday, and everything was fine for a few days. I started passing rubble Saturday thru to Monday. That's when my lower back pain started and I began taking pain meds to sleep. Had an xray on Friday, 9 days after my procedure, and I see my urologist tomorrow, Monday. This pain medication is pretty lame and doesn't help a whole lot. Tomorrow I find out what the next step is.

That...is not addiction. Addiction has a very specific set of criteria that you absolutely did not meet if you think it's something as simple as mild flu like symptoms.
      Physical dependency is not addiction.
Drug addiction is not 'over-hyped', in fact it's ignorance like you're showing here that undermines the work many of us do in helping those get to recovery. Go help out at a sober house, volunteer at a rehab, go to a local AA or NA meeting, talk to people. Ask them if it's over hyped and something they got over in 24 hours. Tell them it's not a big deal. I assure you, you have no clue what addiction is or the struggles they face they get and stay sober.
