  • Finally after around two years of tinkering it works.
This is the last video of the build I hope to add a catch-up in a few months. I also hope to finish the schematics for the hardware and the mechanical design.
In the mean time message me for the Arduino code
No warranty or liability accepted for its use.

      Awesome, thank you!
It's been a real trial to get this made.

Great job with designing your Power Drawbar. Have been following this series and really enjoyed it's development. Cheers from Canada. Stay safe.

Great build. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎

Awesome work. I've found an all electric similar concept commercial one: Grizzly Industrial H8368 - Electric Power Drawbar, which also doesn't require an air compressor.

      Thanks for sharing.
I looked at this but its not available here in the UK also it just replaces the spanner used to tighten the drawbar. Fine and dandy but probably not suitable for using tool offsets in Mach3.
Having said that it will save oodles of time in changing cutters.
      Cheers.

Could you do a walk through of your syil x4 plus setup
I also have one and love what you have done.

Fantastic video. I just happened to stumble across your channel. You have a lot of interesting videos. Not sure if you looked at pneumatic cylinders yet but I tried a similar setup and it seems to work

      Thanks Sean,
I did look at pneumatic cylinders that is what sparked off the whole thing. They are so damned expensive hence my cheapskate approach.
      Cheers

@@CazualHaze I just watched your other video and seen why you went that way. That's my bad. I found an 80mm double cylinder going for 110 cad. On AliExpress

      Thats quite cheap.

I enjoyed the saga verry much. have a look at linear steppers at steppersonline might be another solution there.

Thanks Jeff, I looked at these but could not find one with the push I needed. My drawbar pull is in the order of 1500Kg or over 3000lbs good thought though. Making one of these cheaply is a bit of a challenge.
      Cheers

So this is fantastically engineered but what bugs me is that this gives 1500kg. HAAS publishes their drawbar force and 1500kg aligns with their 50 taper 30HP spindles! I feel like there must be a variable somewhere thats making such great forces necessary

Hi @Rainbows871 I think the difference is that the BT30 is a taper drive so does not need a massive drawbar pull as the taper does the driving. The Tormach and my system is straight sided so the tools have no taper to jam into. Hence the massive pull needed to stop them slipping.
Incidentally mine will move in the collet with moderate force on a spanner. I have found the tools can 'walk' out of the collet if you dont have enough drawbar pull somewhat catastrophically!!
      Cheers

Ah! That makes sense. I'm restoring a Denford Starmill and have been debating TTS vs 30 taper conversion (nabbed original drawings for the 30 spindle).I was about to go TTS but that force might swing the balance@@CazualHaze

@Rainbows871 Yep good choice I want to build a mill from scratch and the spindle I think is the hardest bit. The speed range is an issue along with the torque for rigid tapping and orientation for tool changes. I will go taper spindle for sure three phase motor or servo is still up for discussion.
Good luck with the mill. Cheers

Did you have to drill any holes in the mill to attach the drawbar?

    • @CazualHaze

No extra holes that was one of my design criteria so I could remove it if I sold the mill.
      Cheers
