Prayers for a full recovery, Mr. Sweet. My 15-year old just discovered your songs and it blew his mind when I immediately pulled out Girlfriend. I guess Mom isn't so bad after all!
We had so much fun shooting this video, and Matt is such a sweet cat, his wife is a darling, and Roman crushed it as usual. Our 9-cam welded steel box to hold the 9x super8’s was soooo heavy, but it came out great. Our main camera was a 35mm Cameflex, lensed with Zeiss primes pretty wide open. Fun day at Matt’s.
Now I'm shooting an entire documentary on a Canon M50 that's less than 2lbs. Thanks for the memories; Matthew has shaped my music world for over 20 years.
One of the 10 best songs of the '90s. Love the video too. Would love to read some of the concepts and thought processes behind it, if you don't mind sharing.
All the camera specs are gibberish to me I just know it was heavier and more cumbersome to work with. Despite my ignorance thanks for your work on this! Airwalks and a 70 challenger r/t 4speed bring me back to a simpler time when such things were not out of reach. Hope he held onto that car at least till the 08 financial crisis lol
Heard this on the radio for the first time my Junior year of college and went straight to the record store in Manhattan, Ks and got the CD. Still have it too. Great album!
Let's all keep Matthew Sweet in our prayers, every day let's all pray for him to make a miraculous recovery, he's blessed us with his great songs, let's give him back his much deserved blessings! may Almighty God and Jesus Christ and the saints, tomorrow Nov 1 2024 is All Saints Day, heal Matthew and may Matthew feel God's , Jesus's and the most holy saints love and holy presence through his recovery and healing.
The 90’s was the best.we had song after song that was cool with awesome hooks-guitar bangers…love this era so much.Matthew Sweet is awesome.still listening 2022
Ikr? I saw him in Nashville in 1994, he was great in concert, a whole lineup of different guitars switching it up, it was after Girlfriend, the tour for Altered Beast... So underrated
This song and the follow-up single We're the Same (also very good) was played pretty heavily in the spring/summer of 1995 where I was. If I had to guess, it was the Oasis album What's the Story Morning Glory that was released in fall that dictated what alternative music was going to sound like for the next little while, namely Britpop and bands like Oasis, Blur, Elastica, etc. It doesn't exactly jive with Sweet's music which is decidedly more bubblegum in tone. If I remember, Sweet did a slew of soundtrack and compilation album singles (notably he did the Scooby Doo theme song, which I thought was awesome), but I don't think it did much to help his recognition. I wish more people knew about Matthew Sweet too.
I couldn’t have said it better! The first time I heard this song, I was at work. It was late at night, and I was ending my shift at a supermarket. A friend of mine came over and played it to me. I was completely blown away! It was one of the most perfect songs I had never heard! Some years later, I was looking for the album at a local record store. I asked the girl behind the counter if she had it, and she replied:” Matthew Sweet?” We don’t keep that kind of junk in stock anymore...it just doesn’t sell”! I immediately walked out. I was totally surprised.
Matthew Sweet layed down some of the best pure rock & roll in the 90s. His sensibility as a writer was just pure brilliance. It's decades later and it still sounds fresh and vibrant.
I'll just say there's a hidden agenda behind the music industry that seeks to promote certain things while burying others. The people who own the record labels, networks, and airwaves are interested in more than just money or rewarding talent.
Prayers for a full recovery, Matthew. Rise out of this like a phoenix. You've given us so much for years with your music. Now we're here for you. You got this!!
I haven't heard this song in a couple decades. Was at the gym this morning, and it came on over the speakers. What a wave of nostalgia that hit me! On my home I had this thing cranked.... my God what a tune!
Man I forgot about this song and all the sudden the chorus popped into my head today like over 2 decades later! Pure joy, 90s where the best music just awesome! ❤️💖❤️💖
Konnichiwa! I came back to watch this video for the first time in years. And liked all 600+ comments to be with all the people who love this song! From a Japanese Matthew fan who spent her youth in the 90s!

I first heard this song when I was 15. I'm now 43. I've never heard of another Matthew Sweet song. Yet I can remember the first time I heard this song. Weird.

This is just one of those songs that brings me back to my teenage days, on the couch in the basement with my 4 friends, MTV in the background, when we acted like life was so hard but knew how easy we had it. This song brings back the good part of being a 90s kid
This song and album will always be the soundtrack to the first love of my life at age 19. Just hearing this song gives me that lovesick queasy feeling again at 43.
Im only 32 and I have already realized nastalgia is one if the most powerful things in the world. Its amazing how this song can make me feel like a little kid playing super Nintendo again.
I remember initially dismissing this album when it came out. I let a friend use mycar & he left the CD in my stereo. It stayed in there for a solid 3 weeks before he made give it back. Such a great album front to back.
Sean Kelly totally agree i was in my very early 20’s and i miss how organic everything was, even dating was so easy! Boy meets girl, boy ask girl for number, these days dating is rife with nonsensical complexities such as profiles and likes and pics of yoga poses and judgements made by what is written! Younger gen, has lost all touch of what is real and organic! They can stay in their virtual world of victim-hood and ambien pills!
@@jbauer140 lmao, love that at the end .... We are certainly in the age of victimhood... Someone told me recently that something I said wasn't very "woke" & I said, "I woke up in the 90s, none of this shit is original, it's just become more lame"
So, reviewing Matthew Sweet's Wiki page, this fellow had a limited amount of commercial success, but got to make music with artists most people would recognize. Matthew Sweet is a journeyman, musician, recording artist, song writer, I'm stunned that I didn't know more about him and his accomplishments. Because I gravitate to 90's punk-pop, invariably the RUclips algorithm would point me to this song...thank goodness it did.
I fell in love with this song when it came out and I am still in love with it today. And it is still dedicated to the same person. It is the perfect little gem, capturing a time that will never be again.
Hands down my favorite Matthew Sweet song. Played it on ghetto gear back in the 90s, play it with some modern gear now, but now mostly the same vintage as the video. The gear in this video is better than my modern stuff by far.
Hearing this in 2021 reminds me of a very important song that had been left off my list of classics. Wow Wow Wow. us old school enthusiasts are hard pressed to have our "solid lists of the greatest" I've done so many internet searches.... stuff like this somehow filters through. Well, not now. I've got this from now until "I'm sick of myself"
Matthew Sweet was the 90s king of the buttery power chord progression. I saw him live once at an outdoor festival in '95, and he's as good live as he was on the album. He was drunk off his ass at the time, and still kiling it.
I might be off but matthew always felt like one of the best writers to come out of the 90’s. A musical genius imo. He had everly level harmonies and the spine of the replacements. Im sure there were many other apparent comparisons but what an timeless writer. I will never understand why he wasnt bigger than alot of things but such is life. Its a complete mess and he always made me feel a bit of hope or peace while listening. Pure genius
I remember being 17 and singing this when it would come on the radio to my girlfriend Amy and her just laugh and blush..this song is bittersweet now because we never got the chance to marry because she had an aneurysm and passed away but I can still listen to this song and smile and think about one among many good memories
About a year after this album came out I worked for Apple's Tech support (It was my first full time job as a teen). Matthew Sweet called in twice and I helped him both times ( I was in a paid support line for people who paid extra specialized help). I remember what a generally shy and nice guy he was. After the weird marriage proposals, I'd say this is the most memorable part of that time working there...
Isaac Brown - She knows it was him. When you work in a specialized service job you have brushes with celebrities, and it’s unmistakeable. Usually it’s a known thing by your boss and co-workers. At my job we get them, and we’re notified in advance. Sometimes their lawyers have us sign confidentiality agreements, so yeah.
One of the great songs of the 90’s. Matthew Sweet always had a Beatlesque way of approaching songs with some fun and upbeat things going in his songs. He’s a rocker.

Yes, indeed. 😢
What happened to Matthew Sweet
I miss the 90s everyday 😫
I was so concerned about the future....forgot to enjoy the present
was just about to comment the same thing.
They are never coming back.
GREAT decade to be out seeing shows and checking out new albums. Feel really lucky to have been a younger person during that time.
Prayers for a full recovery, Mr. Sweet. My 15-year old just discovered your songs and it blew his mind when I immediately pulled out Girlfriend. I guess Mom isn't so bad after all!
Prayers going up for Matthew, hoping he has a full recovery from his stroke.
My favorite Matthew Sweet song. Such a talented yet underrated artist. Keeping you in my thoughts for a full recovery.
Mine too ❤
Quite possibly the most underrated rock song ever.
it's not that under rated, although, yes it is
This song as well as several others by Matthew Sweet are in my list of the best 1000 songs in my lifetime.
Yeh I’d say it’s underrated
No. not even close. Good, not most underrated. shut your hyperbole.
The whole album is amazing.

20000 percent
Heard this on the radio for the first time my Junior year of college and went straight to the record store in Manhattan, Ks and got the CD. Still have it too. Great album!
Masterpiece of a song. The drumming and guitar are insane, and the chorus is brilliant. Matthew Sweet deserves much more recognition.
The drumming is ordinary that's why the song is perfect.
Absolutely, You are 100 Percent correct!

"World that's ugly and a lie, it's hard to even want to try" is an all-time lyric ever.
Was in a crummy mood and this tune came on. Haven’t heard it years. Completely changed my day. 👍
That's awesome! Great music will do that.
Was just thinking the same 😊
Well wishes going out to Matt. Better days ahead brother.
This is probably the greatest power pop song of all time.
Along with The Records' "Starry Eyes" and Flamin' Groovies' "Shake Some Action". All pure power pop goodness.
I’ll add Matthew’s “We’re the Same”, Big Star’s “Back of a Car” and Superdrag’s “Hellbent” to the discussion lol. 👍🏻
What about All I Want from Toad The Wet Sprocket or Diane from Material Issues
"Girlfriend" needs to be added too.
Sending healing energy & prayers to you Matthew. Please get well soon!
Such an underrated artist.

90s the decline of rock n roll
Rapp took over n and of great talent out there but rap $$ for 1 hit Das it
The 90’s were good, but I am 74 and think that about the 60’s and early 70’s. Fortunately, there were bands that saved me from disco.😊
He is so great, it’s a shame more people don’t know how good he is.
At least he got to party with Mike Meyer and that Bangles chick.
I’m beginning to think ... maybe they don’t know .................
Those who know, know.

I still sing this song at karaoke. It gets the whole place rocking.

Never tire of this song. Perfectly crafted. Classic pop song. I don't understand why it did not receive more airplay.

Hello 😉
15 in '95.
Hi!!! 😀
This is my favourite song by Matthew Sweet. His entire back catalogue is full of gems. Please get well soon.
Matthew Sweet layed down some of the best pure rock & roll in the 90s. His sensibility as a writer was just pure brilliance. It's decades later and it still sounds fresh and vibrant.
Awesome song. Never understood why Mathew Sweet never got more airplay and acclaim, so talented.

You don't know how you move me
Deconstruct me
And consume me
I'm all used up
I'm out of luck
I am starstruck
By something in your eyes that is keeping my hope alive
But I'm sick of myself when I look at you
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie
It's hard to even want to try
And I'm beginning to think baby you don't know
I'll take or leave
The room to breathe
The choice to leave you
I'll throw away
A chance at greatness
Just to make this
Dream come into play, I don't know if I'll find a way
'cause I'm sick of myself when I look at you
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie
It's hard to even want to try
And I'm beginning to think baby you don't know
I'm beginning to think baby you don't know
There's something in your eyes that is keeping my hope alive
But I'm sick of myself when I look at you
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie

This song was on such heavy rotation on MuchMusic that they may as well have changed the name to Matthew Sweet TV. Total classic.

Guitar playing is so unique in this classic.
Great jam. Full-on mid-1990s. I was in downtown Mobile, sipping Pabst, running around in my Reliant K. Clueless. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
