I have had lots of questions asking what each piece is for so I hope this explanation helps! The thread bed (flat rectangle piece) is used to hold your different pieces of floss. For example if you are using blue floss for just a few stitches and then need to switch colors but will still need that piece of blue floss, simply lay it on the fuzzy fabric and it will stay there. As opposed to laying it on the arm of the couch and then it sticks to your arm or your cat! Personal experience on that one😂 The needle minder is a place to lay your needle and the magnet keeps it in place instead of it falling into the cushion or carpet. Again, personal experience😂 The thread catcher (tall circular container) is basically a mini trash can. Put all your thread or fabric clippings inside and it keeps your workspace tidy. The pin cushion is a safe place to hold straight pins and needles.
Yes, excellent idea! And because it's white, it's easy to see the exact thread color ( say if you have three different shades of blue). I can't wait to make one. I'm excited to get started. Off to the thrift store I gooooooooo!!!!! 🚗 Zoom Zoom
Great idea! As we have cats, I'm going to use a metal shortbread tin with a lid - essential!, and add the magnets to my items rather than the other way round, so they will stick to the tin.
What a fabulous idea ! My work table gets so cluttered and I constantly lose my pins, needles and leftover threads......... this will be a life saver! Also handy if you go camping, everything neatly together, though I think I'd use a metal tin with a lid for going away. Thanks for a great tutorial.😊😊
What a lovely project! Thank you so much for sharing. I love the bird/spring version best but they are both very nice. I think I will try to add a place for a pair of embroidery scissors on my tray as I'm forever losing them!
Just found you. I travel on rv. I going to make on that is a lap tray with folding legs And add a magnet for my tiny scissors. I CC and hand sew hexes.
I was literally sitting in my recliner doing some slow stitching while watching this video. Needless to say, I was fishing out fallen needles, paper pieces, etc. and getting annoyed! I definitely needed one of these ASAP. I am spending my Sunday making one. No more lost items in the cushion of my chair! 😄
I'm making one THIS WEEK! I sew and I make earrings. This would be a great surface to work on both projects of an evening! Thank you! I'm thinking of placing a sheet of metal in the base and then putting magnets in the bottom of each accessory so they can be placed anywhere... Time will tell :-)
These are really nice. I think I'll make one for car travel, because everything has a tendency to roll when I stitch in the car. Thank you for the tutorial.
Wow i love them especially the bird one❤❤❤❤❤ this will work great for me, i am always up and down and have to put everything on my end table which usually has alot of other stuff on it so this will be amazing thank you so much for sharing i think i will put 2 magnets on the thread cup holder great idea 💡
They are both adorable… what a great idea. I have a lot of crafty friends that travel and I think these would make great gifts. My favourite is the primitive one but I love the bird theme as well! Thanks for sharing.
I love the idea for this, but think that will substitute either a cookie tray or a large but shallow cookie tin for the base, then I don’t have to worry about placement of magnets on tray. Thanks for sharing the idea
OMG!!! You are truly my inspiration this morning!!! As I was watching your video, I thought to myself I already have a cat (once a candle holder) holding my pins, I have a needle holder book so I can lay that down on the tray, and I was practicing my embroidery stitches on a piece of muslin from the 70's so I can cover my tray with that and my thread catcher is a crystal ashtray mom used to have in her living room but used as a coaster.....and then realized I don't have a tray!!! LOL!! When the snow storm blows over, I will definitely go shopping for a tray!! Thanks for your inspiration and popping into my feed!!!....and yes I like them both - if I have to choose, it would be the primitive one!!
So cute!!! Love it!! Question.... what is the purpose of the "thread bed"? Also, I am SOOOOOO making one of these this weekend!! Thanks for sharing! Edit.... Nevermind about the question lol. I just saw your pinned post with explanations!! ❤
A thread bed is used to hold the threads you aren’t currently working with. It’s a handy place to put them so they stay put and don’t get stuck to your sleeve or your cat 😂
Yes I did on the primitive one but not on the bird one. I didn't find the glue made any real difference and I didn't like the way the fabric stuck to the cardboard.
The thread catcher is the tall circular container and is basically a mini trash can. Place all your thread clippings in it to keep your work space tidy. the thread bed is a place to lay your floss so you can come back to it at another point in your project. Instead of laying it on the arm of the couch and then loosing it😂

I like the primitive tray only because it is larger. I appreciate the comments about using a cookie tray or metal tray because I like to move my pieces around a bit. Great tutorial!
Just stumbled across this video👏! Would a thin poster board be an ok substitute for the cereal box? Also could you recommend a substitute for the “hot glue”? “LAST” time I used hot glue it wasn’t PRETTY🫢. Thanks for this cute and useful tutorial. I’m a quilter and am ALWAYS “misplacing” or dropping (sometimes into the waste paper can next to my chair🫢) as I move from room to room to porch. M🍀
What a totally clever idea! TFS and a big please - Could you tell me the name of the red sampler fabric that you used for the primitive pincushion? Love it!
Ok, I do have a legit question though that i wasnt able to find the answer to lol. Where do i find crushed walnut shells? I do know they help to keep needles sharp too (as you slide them in and out of the pin cushion, so i would like to use them as well. Plus it adds a little extra weight to the pin cushion, which is a plus)!
You can purchase from your local quilt shop OR pet supply - it's called "lizard litter". I use it all the time for pincushions. Add a drop or two of essential oils. 😊

Needle minder is usually a magnet to hold your needles that are threaded and being used. When using only two or three strands of thread at a time the other strands are placed on a thread bed which is usually felt, till needed.
Yes I would be happy to!😊 The thread bed (flat rectangle piece) is used to hold your different pieces of floss. I don't do a lot of hand stitching these days due to carpal tunnel and eyes that aren't 30 any more, but I'm going to adapt this marvelous idea to hold other craft supplies. When I'm working on a project while watching TV in the evening I'm constantly wanting something that I left upstairs, or vice versa (and my legs aren't 30 any more either).😊 Thank you for sharing your great idea.

I love the idea of a metal tin for travel! Thanks for watching🧡

Great idea! Just made a version of it - thanks! No more losing things down the side of the sofa! 😀

Hope you enjoy making one!

It would be great for the car! Thanks for watching🧡
This is such a practical, useful idea! I sew & do cross-stitch, therefore two of these are in my future! Thank you for sharing!!!
You are so welcome!
Excellent tutorial ❤ Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea. Both were nice...the Spring was happy...both were clever❤
You are so welcome! And thank you for watching 🥰

Great idea! Thanks. I like the primitive better. And I’ll have to try this. I agree with previous comment about a place for scissors.
Thank you!
Fabulous idea!! I’ll certainly be making one of these!! I choose primitive because that’s my style! 😊
Thank you and have fun!
Very clever, wow. Thanks for sharing! 😘
Thank you!🧡
Love this project. And both your trays are beautiful but if I did make one for myself, I would make primitive thank you for sharing this project. 😀💖
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Both are adorable, but I like the spring bluebirds!
Thank you!
This is a cute stitcher's tray. I like the spring colors best.
Thank you!🧡
Wonderful tutorial. I like the sign style better, with handles added. Thanks for sharing. Happy crafting.
Thanks so much! 😊 I love the idea of adding handles!
Excellent tutorial instructions. Just what I needed. Thank you!
Thank you!
They are both adorable… what a great idea. I have a lot of crafty friends that travel and I think these would make great gifts. My favourite is the primitive one but I love the bird theme as well! Thanks for sharing.
Great gift idea!!

That's a great idea!
so cute
Thank you🧡
I love both of them, very beautiful!
Thank you!
What a wonderful idea!!! I love it 💖. Thank you for your tutorial!!! Truly an inspiration! I like them both!!😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Great tutorial, I like the bird fabrics 😊
Thank you! 😊
Genius! Yes, will make! Both adorable! But I prefer the primitive, I think!
Thank you and have fun making one!
I love both styles! I've made a list to get my supplies.
Wonderful! Have fun making one🧡
I just finished reading Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney and it is amazing!
Thank you🧡

It could be fun looking for tray in salvage type shops. ❤
This is so great. Thanks for the tutorial.
You're very welcome!
Fabulous ! 😊👍👍
Thank you!
Great Idea Awesome project Great video TYS (Pauline S)
Thanks so much!

What a great idea.
Thank you!

It’s a rubbish/trash bag.
Ok and thanks so much for watching
I used a mason jar ring to make the ring. Instead of the Pringle ring.
Wonderful idea! That will work great! Thanks for watching and commenting🧡
Happy St. Patricks day
Thank you and to you as well!
What is a thread bed used for sorry. I am keen to make this sewing tray. Love the idea of it. Thank you b
A thread bed is used to hold the threads you aren’t currently working with. It’s a handy place to put them so they stay put and don’t get stuck to your sleeve or your cat 😂
When you put the piece of cardboards with metal inside the pincushion, did you use glue to hold in place?
Yes I did on the primitive one but not on the bird one. I didn't find the glue made any real difference and I didn't like the way the fabric stuck to the cardboard.
What a great idea! But, what is the difference between the thread catcher and the thread bed??? Aren't they both for the same purpose? Thank you!
The thread catcher is the tall circular container and is basically a mini trash can. Place all your thread clippings in it to keep your work space tidy. the thread bed is a place to lay your floss so you can come back to it at another point in your project. Instead of laying it on the arm of the couch and then loosing it😂
Awesome project. I dont know what a thread bed is used for. Can you explain? Yes I will be making one of these!! Thank you for sharing!! Hugs ❤

Hi! Yes poster board would work great! Instead of hot glue I would try Aileen's Tacky Glue. Thanks for watching🧡
Just subscribe 3-16-2024 been stitching since 1981 late comer at age 30
Thanks for subscribing and watching!
What a totally clever idea! TFS and a big please - Could you tell me the name of the red sampler fabric that you used for the primitive pincushion? Love it!
Thank you and the fabric is Rhubarb and Ginger by Blackbird Designs for Moda. Pattern # 2565. I purchased it off of Etsy.

BTW, great idea about the essential oil. I am definitely going to do that.
Yes, either a quilt shop or lizard litter from the pet store or Amazon
