  • Loaded with history and original canal features -- locks, lock houses, aqueducts and other structures, the C&O Canal Towpath run 184.5 miles between Georgetown and Cumberland, MD. Our ride started in Cumberland and went to Oldtown (about 22 miles one-way). We also made a stop at the Paw Paw Tunnel -- a not-to-be-missed engineering marvel at 3,118' long. The trail is a gateway to the Great American Rail Trail which eventually will connect the country from Washington DC to Washington state.

Looks like a really nice trail. I need to check this trail out at some point. I already rode 5K miles in Florida, it's time to get out and explore other states trail systems. Nice video, thanks😊

Hi Thomas -- Thanks for watching. The C&O is a great trail. We just came back from riding two additional segments -- so keep an eye out for those videos coming in the next few weeks.

Great video Again - love the history element. I really enjoyed getting a look at the surface and terrain - I’ve ridden the whole GAP Trail but people have told me the C&O can be a bit more gnarly - especially in bad weather. Even though you guys weren’t crazy about the part you rode being in the middle of nowhere I think I might enjoy that. When I was younger I camped at the campground right by the Paw Paw tunnel but wasn’t that into cycling so didn’t even realize it was part of a much larger trail. For our annual bike touring trip we are considering The Erie Canalway, GAP - C&O, or doing the Ohio to Erie again - your videos are more helpful to me than just reading web sites articles so thanks!

Hi Tim, Thanks for the comments. We are going to try the C&O from Georgetown to Harpers Ferry in the spring. From other videos that looks very interesting and more history filled. If you are going to go near the Paw Paw tunnel you may want to check on it's status. We heard it was going to be closed for 2 years for repairs. Thanks for subscribing.

@@Adventuresonebikes Thanks for the heads up - yes that would be a big issue. I can't imagine there is a good detour if they put 20 years worth of effort into building it!

Why did you walk back out of the Paw Paw Tunnel? Ghosts? It is haunted they say, but the C & O trail is fantastic, sorry you weren't crazy about the trip from Cumberland down, but to me it's beautiful and peaceful and get to see the locks from Hancock into Williamsport...it's where I grew up

Hi Greg -- Thanks for your comments. We didn't ride our bikes to the tunnel because we had to get to VA, so we just stopped and made a short ride there. I didn't feel comfortable riding through the tunnel because it was very bumpy and I thought I might hit my head on the ceiling (we are tall people). So I just was lazy I guess. Now we regret it because it is closed now for repairs. In our ride from Cumberland we didn't get farther than Oldtown because we only have 30-40 miles on our bike batteries and we wanted to have enough juice for the return trip. We plan to ride the C&O this year starting in Georgetown.

Enjoining your adventures. Tell about your e-bikes. What brand are they and why did you choose them over others? Are they Class 1,2,or 3? And what about your headlights that go on when you need them? Were they original equipment on your bikes or aftermarket?

Hi -- Thanks for letting us know you are enjoying our adventures. Can't wait until the snow melts so we can get back out on the trail! Our ebikes are Raleigh Cadet IEs -- we bought ours 2 years ago and aren't sure if they are still being sold. They are Class 3 bikes. Headlights are sensitive to sunlight and go on and off when needed -- or you can turn them on for your entire ride. The only thing we have done to the bike is change the seat to a softer one and added a post mount luggage rack.

Hello, it looks really nice trail and I wanted to give it a try. However, I only have a road bike (Trek Emonda), would that be okay on this trail? It seems the road isn't paved though. Please give me some advice on that and also if you could share the address of your starting point of the parking lot, that would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi. Thanks for watching and your comments. We've written more than half of the C&O Canal trail and outside of a few yards in Cumberland, I can't recall any pavement. Some sections are smoother than others. We did see a number of people on road bikes. We started this ride at the western terminus of the Canal -- so you would want to park in the Cumberland Canal Place Parking. You can learn more about it here: www.canaltrust.org/pyv/cumberland-canal-place-parking/

At 7:00 Randy looks ready for a beer. Just a comment dear, but it's not dear dear, it is deer......but you knew that. I gather you would rather do the Erie Canal over this one??

Ha Ha Don! Of course you would find my typo! Thanks for keeping me honest. I guess I was so worried about Randy getting a beer I missed that. Actually we want to ride the C&O from Georgetown to Harpers Ferry. I think that is where you can really get a better sense of the canal and the history. We have that on our Spring trip list, right next to meeting up with you and Nancy on the Virginia Creeper trail.
