Rather frustrating that it has all gone down like this. I fear that within ten years gaming in general will be completely irrelevant outside some indie and small developers. It will probably all move to mobile devices and televisions capable of directly running or streaming games. But who knows, perhaps that can lead to a second golden PC age when the mainstream audience has moved on to other platforms.

Apparently the Grabber was in development before HL2's release. "Resurrection of Evil has come under some criticism about the use of the Grabber due to the prior popularity of the similar weapon in Half-Life 2. The developers have commented that the tool was originally in Doom 3 before Half-Life 2, and was used to create "damaged" rooms; instead of building a ruined room, they would build a pristine room and use the grabber to "damage" it realistically." So that's interesting. I did like the increased monster count, though. Doom 3 was very, very slow paced for me. Pinkies were used all of what, 4 or 5 times and Revenants were made slower than PSX Doom's.
+M. Birchman Doom 3 was slow paced because it was a horror shooter. RoE was faster paced because it tried to be more like the classic Doom games, using the Doom 3 engine. That combination didn't work for everyone though.
I just find it unfortunate that the combat was so lackluster. Doom was interesting because each monster had a simple purpose and were combo'd with others to make you strategize, where Doom 3's were just as simple but only put in solitary encounters most of the time. It's for that reason the "horror" shooter falls short, because the monsters take 10 seconds to teleport in and are simply not smart, numerous or threatening enough (slow-ass revenants doing 17 damage per rocket on Veteran?) and you're loaded to the teeth with health and ammo to deal with them easily. How are monsters supposed to be threatening at all when you can just walk up and shoot them in the head as they play their hour long teleport animations? It's just left in this awful blend of trying to have oldschool run and gun shooter combat with the pacing of a survival horror game, and they picked all the wrong parts to mix. RoE improved that, then made it even easier anyway by adding the artifact... the two are just disappointing.

Gggmanlives The Berserk boss can be made much easier with the Helltime power. The invulnerability one though is quite possible even on Nightmare without anything. I do like this game.
+DoomPowerMetal When I first saw the E3 footage I was let down. Then I stepped back and looked at it with fresh eyes a few months later. Now I am so fucking excited, it looks like everything I've wanted in a game for the past few years. And of course stoked to see Gman's opinion on it
I recall my first experience with Resurrection of Evil being particularly special, which might have been due to my graphics card. The visual effects created by the Grabber and the Artifact did some magical things. The Grabber's visual effect is represented by a giant circle in the center of the screen when latching on to something, which looked a bit glaring. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't flip the perspective within the circle completely upside down. And using the artifact flipped the whole screen upside-down, which made the mandatory artifact sections a royal pain. That being said, I'm somewhat grateful that I didn't know how to fix these visual bugs at the time, because it meant I could spend most of the game without using the incredibly overpowered Artifact. I think I only completed it on Normal Difficulty, though, I should go back and try Veteran Mode at some point.
how about Dagger of Dunwall and Bridgemore witches expansion packs/DLCs for Dishonored? those are probably the best ones in the last decade in my opinion.

Funny to see a review for this in 2016. I loved that DLC. After the first boss fight which I just found annoying, the rest of the DLC felt like a true Doom game: less "boo factor", more chaotic action with many big enemies in closed areas.
Since people always whine about the flashlight - it never bothered me. In fact, I found it useful - it never runs out of power and can be used as a decent melee weapon against weaker enemies (e.g. zombies). No reason to complain.
It sucks that they made it not an equipment in BFG edition, and it runs out of battery there. If you're playing the vanilla version that's the only way you'd know there was an equipable flashlight haha
Many people also wouldn't know that the equippable flashlight was a clubbing weapon - more powerful than the fists and pretty useful against occasional zombies ;)
I remember reading on the DOOM Wiki that the Bruiser was supposed to be a terminal you'd interact with and then it would show the Bruiser's eye or mouth and transform into the Demon...I think that would have been really cool but was scrapped unfortunately so they're just kinda there
I know everyone hates on the horse armor and shit, but the shivering isles might be one of the greatest expacks ever made, and was basically the last of its kind.
The "Vulgar" enemy was actually id Software's original Archvile design for Doom 3. They dropped the design shortly after they nailed in the Hellknight design, and wanted the other demons to fit that style instead. So the model was removed from the game completely. As were a couple other early model concepts that featured more horns and spikes.
Im on the flash light love side... i didn't notice levels too dark because i played it on xbox which had the pistol flashlight but that toxic level was hard but i loved how it was refreshing. Lastly, you didn't give that double barrel more love, fuck man, that reload sound, and the fact you can basically fuck up a hell-knight with just a few shots is so fuckin sick. love your work mate
+gast128 I always found it to be a big faff. Not tense, just annoying. Especially when I hit the wrong button and switch back to the start of my armory during a gunfight. The armour-mounted torch was a bit generous with its battery life, though.
True... but the flashlight runs out of power in the BFG Edition and can go out when you really need it. That's why I still prefer the original separate flashlight ;)
In speaking of classic expansion packs, I too have my favorites. The expansion packs I consider to be the best include Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity for Quake 1, Mysteries of the Sith for Jedi Knight, the Plutonium Pak and Duke Caribbean for Duke 3D, the Plasma Pak and Cryptic Passage for Blood, the Nitro Pack for Interstate '76, and Opposing Force for Half-Life. I also am partial to expansions in other genres, like Hellfire for Diablo 1, Beyond the Dark Portal for WarCraft II, and Brood War for StarCraft. I lament that some of the awesome games from the past didn't get expansion packs, like Sacrifice, Deus Ex, Alice, or Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Some expansions I wish were better, like Return to Na Pali or The Nightmare Levels,
Good review. I bought this back in the days to experience the super shotgun, since that was my favorite weapon in Doom 2. However here the single shotgun is powerful enough and the scarce ammo availability makes you think twice to use it. I also got the feeling that the grabber gun was largely inspired by the gravity gun. the end boss was criminal difficult on my old Pentium 4, but strangely enough on a new faster PC it was suddenly doable.
Disappointed you didn't pick apart that Bruiser demon. Without the artifact powers that demon is a real bastard. Plus the monitor mouth design and the mechanical leg sound effects seemed pretty top notch. But love that you ended the video on a death by Bruiser.
Man, going back in time couldn't feel any better. The words "expansion pack" are so alien since "DLC" and "Pre-order exclusive bonus" are now thrown around these days. Also, it is so true that most expansion packs had far more content packed in than a lot of DLCs of today. Basically, expansion packs cut the the bull$hit and offer a better deal for your wallet.
One of the DLCs that I like as it really porgressed the story left off during the original Doom 3 game. Just kinda hate the way of how the Artifact just allows you to use all the Hunters powers and not allow the player to choose which power is to be used during fights.
I played this expansion on Hard Mode, and I gotta say I've never hated Revenants more than during the back half or so of the game. It just loves to spawn them in in these cramped spaces where there's little room to avoid their rockets. I remember one particularly irritating part where I was dealing with like two of 'em and one other enemy from the front only to get taken out by another god damn Revenant that I had no idea had spawned behind me. As with F.E.A.R. I was trying not to rely on the time slowing mechanic too much because I didn't want it to turn into a crutch but near the last half or so with the enemy count going through the roof it's obvious that the developers reeeeeaaaally want you to use it.
Pretty much agree with the points of this review as I not long ago played Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil again. I mourn the passing of shooters such as Half Life, Doom, Elite Force, and Jedi Knight. Yeah I know new Doom is coming but I am going to have to try it before I think it is good or not.
Hmm? Replaying these games is never the same as experiencing them for the first time, the campaign still being unknown. I was reminded again of parts that I liked but also what parts I found dull back then and that I consider dull now. The problem with story driven games is that they often have little to no replayability. I wish it was easier for fans to make new story driven fan content.
I miss medical packs, before everyone copied the recharging shield from Halo. And the goddamn atmosphere man, I loved games survival horror the most. Especially the ones with rich environments where you can go have a look at the chips and soda and all those amazing little details you find in rooms like the staff kitchens and break rooms.
Awesome review mang, resurrection of evil was the SHIT! i also remember from the "Chatting With Salokin Sekwah" vid, you mentioned your old / deleted videos; and something of a Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Review? if you could even still find that or possibly remake it, that'd be awesome, i'd love to hear what you have to say on the mulitplayer; best CoD multiplayer since COD4
It isn't clear from the video if you already did that, but check the pcgamingwiki for some commands to put in the autoexec.cfg file to enable Ultra settings in modern computers. The engine is bugged and forces low settings regardless of your choice, which is especially visible on textures (they are too blurry), but can be made to use proper ultra mode via the autoexec.cfg file.
I have to say, I just went through Resurrection of Evil through the BFG Edition, and while I myself am divided on how to feel about the changes made to the base game, the BFG version of Resurrection of Evil just feels better. There's more ammo for the shotguns, which is great, and the lighting is brightened up just enough for make most of the levels able to be seen without needing a flashlight, but preserving the darker look of the expansion. In fact, I prefer the lighting of Resurrection of Evil, or at least the BFG Edition version of the game, over the base game's, which was generally either dark or light, rather than BFE RoE, which seemed to straddle the line very well. Can't say I have the problems with the grabber that you do, though. I never found myself needing to hold a projectile for more than a second or two, as I usually switched to it just to toss the projectiles of the imps, vulgars, and hell knights back at them before switching back to another weapon. Also, maybe it was removed in the BFG Edition, but I don't recall having a helmet on when I went through the sewers. I was even wondering what helmet you were talking about as I went through it. One of these days, I'll go through the original Doom 3 again, and give non-BFE Resurrection of Evil a shot, but IMO, BFE RoE is an improvement over the base game.
nice to see a recent review these.. great synopsis if those the original two, we prolly played (last man standing) LMS COOP roe and OpenCoop modifications classic doom mod together, cooperative the replaybility goes thru the roof with them,,, well i think so I helped with em
I'm actually playing Doom 3 right now, it's good for what it is though I get a lot of Half Life vibes with it. Great review. I'm gonna play it after I finish Doom 3. We occasionally on a blue moon get a proper expansion in the modern age of gaming. I mean Wolfenstein: The New Order was a really good one that came out last year and hopefully Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansion is gonna be some good fun. I hate it when Destiny calls their DLC expansions, it's glorified DLC people. You get roughly the same amount of content as you would by buying some CoD map packs. I'm very disappointed that the new DOOM is going the same route in DLC map packs, I wished they would do an expansion instead.
Good thing that we have the mod perfected doom for doom 3. Its makes you feel much more powerfull and the dark theme has bin fixt the way that you can see the game better without turning the brightness to a max.
Expansion packs didn't really die untils somwhere after red dead redemption i think. I'd say the difference between an expansion and a dlc is that an expansion could be considered it's own game like resurrection of evil, opposing force or any of the fallout 3 add ons while dlc just adds a bunch of stuff that's purely gameplay related like (name of any cod post mw2).
That artifact has some Wolfenstein 2009 feeling to it. And the engine still looks interesting, just that the people are so damn shiny and Half Life 2 in the same year did that much better. Can that be modded to run on a Voodoo 2 like the main Doom 3 game?

+DoomPowerMetal When I first saw the E3 footage I was let down. Then I stepped back and looked at it with fresh eyes a few months later. Now I am so fucking excited, it looks like everything I've wanted in a game for the past few years. And of course stoked to see Gman's opinion on it
Beating this expansion on Nightmare difficulty is truly one of the hardest challenges I've ever taken
The early 2000's were really a strange time for games
Daniel Tejnický The ballad of gay tony was great
Minerva's Den for Bioshock 2
Hearts of Stone/Blood & Wine for Witcher 3 as well.
F.E.A.R. extraction point and perseus mandate were also great expansion packs
No was a resell of the OF game for more money
creators of fear didnt even make those expansions and doesnt consider them canon
@@Dead_Hitori that's i say
and what that expansion pack are from fear not doom
Given the quality of your reviews you seriously deserve more subs.
+Paeronhierta Thanks!
I got RoE as a birthday gift and it was awesome. I definitely see it as an improvement over D3.
Nah... It's basically a rip-off of half life 2 and max payne. The original doom 3 was way better.
@@fightingforce8498 Atleast Resurrecction of Evil has the double shotgun
DLC back then were simply continuations of the base games. Like extra chapters or acting as an epilogue.
First! Really enjoy your vids man and your opinions. You really bring me back to my childhood with your retro reviews. Nothing like the 90's one hell of a decade! Keep up the good work!
i am addicted to the video's that you create (also thanks for replying to my last comment) but i am DYING to hear you're take on The Elder Scrolls Skyrim ! please do Skyrim next !
Funny to see a review for this in 2016. I loved that DLC. After the first boss fight which I just found annoying, the rest of the DLC felt like a true Doom game: less "boo factor", more chaotic action with many big enemies in closed areas.
Sounds like I gotta skip this DLC.
1:30 standing there shooting demons as they spawn in. That pretty much sums up doom 3 in a nutshell
That's crazy cool you got to meet the voice actor.
Since people always whine about the flashlight - it never bothered me. In fact, I found it useful - it never runs out of power and can be used as a decent melee weapon against weaker enemies (e.g. zombies). No reason to complain.
I bet those people who whine about the flashlight are noobs.
Another great rewiew from the most underrated youtuber. Great work mate.
the grabber was awesome.
i remember enjoying using it
ever gonna review left for dead 1 & 2?

+Lewe :) Yes.
still waiting on that TES review :-*
@@Gggmanlives How about Roboquest?
Dude you deserve WAY more subs you're in my top RUclipsrs
I remember reading on the DOOM Wiki that the Bruiser was supposed to be a terminal you'd interact with and then it would show the Bruiser's eye or mouth and transform into the Demon...I think that would have been really cool but was scrapped unfortunately so they're just kinda there

Pariah mate, love you thanks for another awesome review
In BFG edition the Artefact becomes hilariously overpowered, which totally gave me that RIP&TEAR vibe.
Almost everything gets overpowered in the BFG edition thanks to the increased ammo.
u need way more attention bro ur reviews are honest and freaking amazing...........can u plz review dark souls
"From that point in time when these old school shooters were on their way out of the industry"
Don't remind me man...
This channel needs more views and attention.
Great review man, keep up the good work!
Playing this game again now and damn is the nostalgia strong. One of my favorite expansion packs for a game ever.
Just recently found your channel! Top job! :)
I know everyone hates on the horse armor and shit, but the shivering isles might be one of the greatest expacks ever made, and was basically the last of its kind.
By the way your accent is AWESOME
Good review. Good thumbnail as well.
+DamienAzreal I don't think this is true.
+Gggmanlives They comment on it in "The Making of Doom 3" book. When the artist talks about creating the Archvile.
Great video! Cant wait for more!
Doom 3 BFG Edition solved that problem with the flashlight.
+Dawid “DeWitt” Freeman don't you think it took something from the immersion away? in the old game you had to choose between flashlight and weapon.
+gast128 I always found it to be a big faff. Not tense, just annoying. Especially when I hit the wrong button and switch back to the start of my armory during a gunfight. The armour-mounted torch was a bit generous with its battery life, though.
Constant Rage For me that was annoying ;(
True... but the flashlight runs out of power in the BFG Edition and can go out when you really need it.
That's why I still prefer the original separate flashlight ;)
@@DawidFreeman I agree with you a shoulder mounted flashlight is what Doom 3 supposed to be just like Half life
lovin these Doom reviews. Im really excited for the new Doom. Hope you are too sunny jim :)
another great review sonny jim
Awesome review as always!! ^^
***** Fuck yeah!! Cool to see you here yo! GUNGA
Some expansions I wish were better, like Return to Na Pali or The Nightmare Levels,
+Cephalopod51 Blue Shift for Half-Life 1? I liked both expansion packs for Half-Life since you experience the events from a different perspective.
The whole "farted in their face" line at the beginning made me lose my shit. Good video.
So did you relive the era
Dude I love the darkness
If your ever thinking about doing another mod corner, You should Check out Resident Evil 2:Mortal Night.
I did just realized that McNeal's Suit? Or Clothing-thing kinda resembles what Olivia (Doom 2016) is wearing, or at least it kinda looks like it.
Definitely wasn't expecting a Suburban Commando reference, and my day is all the richer for it.
You should do the Quake 2 Mod Corner :)
"how it differs from half-life 2 is you can also grab enemies projectile and throw it back at them" you can do that in HL2 :P lol
My favorite thing about the roe expansion pack on Xbox was the inclusion of the first two games plus the master levels

+Dynomite D Rise of the Machines doesn't work on Windows 7.
Let"s not forget Borderlands the pre sequel. That was a gigantic expansion pack and superbly captured the spirit of BL2.
+brawlmaster7 It wasn't a review it was a joke video about how many people use Noob Tubes in the MP mode.
Oh, DEFINITELY that to
brawlmaster7
And I'd guess the MP is still like that too.
Kinda.. a few less players but can still have some fun with it
It isn't clear from the video if you already did that, but check the pcgamingwiki for some commands to put in the autoexec.cfg file to enable Ultra settings in modern computers.
One of these days, I'll go through the original Doom 3 again, and give non-BFE Resurrection of Evil a shot, but IMO, BFE RoE is an improvement over the base game.
nice to see a recent review these.. great synopsis
if those the original two,
we prolly played (last man standing) LMS COOP roe and OpenCoop modifications classic doom mod
together, cooperative the replaybility goes thru the roof with them,,,
well i think so I helped with em
Another great review.
Verdict: 4/5 Reuben Sandwiches
LGR!!!
Just reinstalled the game today, I will say, still a master piece.
It's ok, cause Doom Eternal got 2 Story expansions
1:26 @ Damn, the EXPANSION pack was released in 2005!?! You sure that wasn't yesterday? Crap, feeling old.
Oh snap, I had no idea Doom 3 had an expansion. Thanks for the info.
Good thing that we have the mod perfected doom for doom 3. Its makes you feel much more powerfull and the dark theme has bin fixt the way that you can see the game better without turning the brightness to a max.
I liked this expansion more than the regular campaign. Fast paced, more enemies (less of those annoying babies) and the slow motion ability is awesome
I liked the expansion too more than the original.
3:40 looks like the Verdugo from Resident Evil 4
