    Gordon! The new red rectangle idea is brilliant. You can really see the difference between the focal lengths. Keep up the good work!

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  13 лет назад

    @SDV0307 It could replace them and be more convenient, but obviuously you'd be lacking the 200-300 range, so it depends whether you're willing to trade that extra reac for the convenience of a single lens...

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  14 лет назад

    @quity919 The wide angle on this lens is the same as your 18-55mm. It just zooms much closer at the other end.

    @mayhimsh er, didn't I review the 17-40mm and 24-105mm? I also have a review of the 8-15mm at cameralabs...

  • @cameralabs

    @onlysirdave Sadly not. The lock is only at 18mm.

    This was one hell of a review. Well done sir! Very clear, very informative, very professional. Top grade! Thumbs up for that.

  • @cameralabs

    @kdum8 I agree, but it could loosen over time, so it's still good to have the lock for transportation.

    Hi,
    i have a question about the clicking sound on my 18-200mm vr II. every time my VR engages i would hear a clicking sound. unlike my other VR lens 18-105mm and 18-50mm they dont creat a clicking sound every time the VR engages. just wanted to know if theres something wrong with my 18-200mm vr II lens
    thanks

    This lens has a built-in AF motor so it'll work fine with any Nikon DSLR. But either way, so does the D7000 for working with older lenses, so you're covered on both bases.

    Hi, I'm trying to buy nikon d5200 with 18-200mm or 18-300mm lens but my friend told me not to buy those lens b'caz they give u a very low image quality so he suggested me to buy 18-55mm lens with 70-300mm another lens. I'm very confused now,I really do like to buy 18-300mm lens for my camera.........., please help.

    Thank you for the review. I use one with an old D300.
    The creeping zoom is bit of a pain.
    I know it has a lock, but only at wide, it would be handy to lock it at any focal length. Example, I may take a picture pointing down or up, the zoom will creep.

    I first found out about the focal length difference when watching a video on youtube comparing the Nikon 70-200 with the Canon 70-200. I was still scratching my head after watching that video trying to grasp how that could be. Great job Gordon on explaining this concept to all of us with examples. I have the version I of this lens and it is a very versatile and fun lens.

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  11 лет назад

    Yes it's compatible with the D5200. If you like your 18-55 but wished it zoomed-in longer, then the 18-200 would be a good choice. But for portraits you might want something which can blur the background like a 50mm f1.8. Head over to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and check out my Nikon lens guide for more ideas!

    After this lens is used for awhile, zoom creep gets worse. It is just a matter of being "broken in". I have found that even sitting at a 30deg angle on a tripod, the lens can also creep - so much so that the rubber band trick is necessary.

  • @quity919

    i'm abit confuse about the wide angle aspect of this lense. i am using a D3000 with the starter lense but now i want to buy a wde angle lense to take better photos. but wen i saw this review i though having a zoom and wide angle would be great but i'm just confused if this lense is any wider than the 18-55 that i have now.

    If you zoom in at 135mm (for example) and then use the "lock feature"... Would it actually locked it for lens creep?? Is this lock feature just to prevent creep for 18 mm?? Thanks.

    14 years later, this is still a great and useful review. I'm looking for a 2nd hand lens to upgrade my 18-55 and 55-200 VR combo (used with my D80). The full review and the comparison on the website were exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
    In the meantime, Nikon has released the 18-140 VR. Is this lens a better alternative to 18-200 in terms of image quality and barrel stability (creep)?

    nice I've been a forum member of c'labs for a while now, and I really like the reviews, but that red box you include in the review to show what you can capture with various focal lengths is really helpfull, It'd be great if you could do that with all of the reviews for people who, like me like taking good snaps, but can't visualise what 200 or 85mm or whatever looks like in practice.
    Cheers

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  14 лет назад

    @tomsaunders123 Because most viewers at YT weren't supporting me. This is my full time job and I have to pay the bills and sadly the videos weren't doing that. BUT there will be a new video on the D7000 in the next few days, although you'll need to visit cameralabs . com to see it.

  • @kdum8

    This is a very good review. Thanks Gordon. I am not sure what the point exactly of the zoom lock is. Since it only works at 18mm anyway and zoom creep isn't an issue at that range it would seem to be somewhat superfluous surely?

    On DX (d5100/d5200), does not distort 50mm? From what I know 50mm on FX format is to the human eye. And something else 24mm has less distortion than a 35mm on DX equivalent of 50mm on FX? sorry for any kind of mistakes

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  11 лет назад

    Your friend is right, two lenses covering the same range will almost always out-perform a single lens with the same total range. But it boils down to convenience. Lots of people are happy to sacrifice ultimate image quality for the convenience of having only one lens and never removing it. It's a choice only you can make.

    Just got my first dslr (D5200) with 18-200mm VR-II Nikorr lens... I was worried specifically about zoom creep and its one of the first test I did on the lens... Guess watt..?? I didn't observe creep at any focal length.. tested again and again.. lens just stayed in place.. :) Not sure if this will change over time.. but it could also be that these newest batch of lens might have been corrected for zoom creep, which is the only major complaint with 18-200mm lens..

    The focal length change effect when focusing can be seen easily on macro lenses. My SMC Pentax DA* 60-250mm 1:4 ED [IF] SDM also has this effect of course. Closest focus distance is 1m at all focal lengths. It has never been a problem though.
