What so many people miss about Jenny's story is that she is only with the bastards because she has no self-esteem from her childhood trauma and feels she doesn't deserve better but doesn't really recognise that within herself. That is why so many people who come from abusive backgrounds walk right into abusive marriages ............ the cycle of trauma is hard to break from the abused and abusers side.When will we learn as a species??
When Forrest was giving his speech at the capital, according to Tom Hanks, his inaudible words are: “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing. That’s all I have to say about that.” Adds even more depth to that scene, I think.
I always crack and start crying at the part when he asks if his son is smart. It's the moment in the movie where I knew that he knew he was a little slow. He did a great job proving he's different in a good way, and at that moment he saw it as a bad thing..and it breaks my heart. I'm a total mess from that point on. I'm emotionally and mentally exhausted after watching this movie every time. Loved your reaction!! 🥰
Fun Fact: Zemekis was very eager to have Hanks find the right voice for Forrest Gump. So rather than just pulling a voice out of thin air, Hank decided to hang out with Micheal Connor Humphreys (who played young Forrest) & recorded the pair of them chatting in order to replicate how he spoke.

I'd add Apollo 13 (Lt. Dan is in it, too!), and Philadelphia. For more lighthearted ones: Big, the Money Pit (my fav. comedy of his), the Burbs. Can't go wrong w/ any of his films, though!
There's always been two schools of thought for viewers as to why Jenny treated Forest the way she did. One thinks she's just a self-centered, egotistical, self-destructive witch that uses Forest when she needs him, and ditches him otherwise. The second (and group I subscribe to) is that Jenny felt SHE was the problem, that she truly wasn't worthy of the love Forest offered her, and that if she "went with it", she'd end up destroying Forest, because she can't do anything but taint and ruin everything around her. And she didn't want to ruin the one pure and good thing in her life. I always had an issue that she didn't tell Forest about his son sooner, but I bet it took her a long time to work through her issues to get to that point.
Due to the abuse from her father I'm sure she had major trust issues and possible PTSD. Throughout her life all she wanted was acceptance, and while Forrest was always there for her she had trouble with it.
I agree, I don't know why people say that she used him,Jenny never asked Forrest for anything Jenny's father messed her up,so she was to the one who didn't know what Love was, she had no self esteem and let men abuse her, she didn't feel worthy of Forrest, all she ever did was run away, that's why she told him to always run But she didn't not tell him about his son, Forrest was running around the country for 3years and when he went back home she got in touch with him
The thing about not telling Forrest about his son sooner, its kind of hard to deliver news to a guy who is constantly on the move. Considering he was running across the nation basically the entire time, I can see how she couldn't reach him until he was home and got the letter.
@@tkurz3071 Yeah, but consider Forest went running right after Jenny left, and ran for 3 years, x # of months, and so many days (can't remember the exact number). Jenny had 9 months of pregnancy, then little Forest looked to be about 5 years old when he met his dad. So by my calculation, that gave Jenny at least two years to tell him. Maybe 1. But it's not like she couldn't have written him a letter to the address he had lived his whole life in Greenbow, Alabama, and he'd have gotten it when he got back.
What's interesting about this movie is if you're familiar with world news over the past few decades...you'll love how they blend fiction and reality, especially when they digitally edited Tom Hanks into actual news reels.
In the book that's the sequel to Forrest Gump, Gump and Co., author Winston Groom reveals that Jenny died of hepatitis C. That strain was discovered in 1989 so it fits the timeline.
At the time of the movies release HIV had recently been discovered to be passed by sharing needles. So because the movie didn't say most people thought she had contracted HIV from her years of drug use and unprotected sex. But the books say it was a new form of hepatitis

But it's my understand that the movie is an adaptation of the book meaning they may have changed a number of things. So in the movie universe its definitely implied its aids, so you right, but maybe some events are different enough that Hep C made more since. In the book

The actor who played Lt. Dan formed a band and plays for service men. He has build houses for Veterans and is heavily involved in helping them out whichever way he can. He, in my opinion is a real true hero for that
Someone probably already mentioned it, but in the book Jenny had hepatitis. I don't remember if it was B or C....but one of them. It was wonderful to see a reaction of someone who got all the references. Very few channels catch the significance of Forrest staying at the Watergate or the "Have a Nice Day" smiley face. Also, Jenny gets blasted by a lot of people as they think she strung Forrest on or used him. But she always told him to leave her be and pushed him away. He was just too sweet to give up on her. I love the symbols in the movie. For Jenny, it's birds. Young Jenny and Forrest pray in the field for her to "turn into a bird and fly far, far away". Later Jenny remembers that and stands on the bridge, scaring Forrest. Further on in the story she stands on the edge of the balcony as if she might be thinking about turning into that bird again. In the end, as Forrest leaves the cemetery a flock of birds fly up. And finally, the feather falls out of the book as little Forrest In the beginning it's a bird feather that floats down and Forrest puts it in the book. From that time forward we are included in Forrest's story. Forrest asks his mom what his destiny is and she tells him she believes "we make our own destiny." But Forrest seems to stumble into luck. He gets chased across a field and ends up playing football. At graduation a recruiter asks if he's thought about his future and he goes into the Army. He asks a soldier what that little white ball and paddle are for and becomes a ping-pong master which gets him the money to buy his boat. A hurricane destroys all the boats but Forrest's.......and more. Is he just lucky? Or did he make his own luck by being ready for those challenges? Later at Jenny's grave Forrest tells Jenny "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze. But, I think, maybe it's both." And finally, the feather falls out of the book as little Forrest is getting on the bus, and it floats away.......and so do we, accidental-like.....on a breeze.
When you key in on Forrest's reaction to him having a son, and being smart...that is priceless. I love that you understand how important it was to him that his little boy was smart, because he knew he wasn't a smart man(remember he said it to Jenny). It is wonderful to see you appreciate the wonder and simple love that comes thru whenever Forrest does or says anything. Love your reaction videos, You do a great job! Thank you!
Tom Hanks in the "Is he smart?" scene is probably the greatest acting in history. I don't even like this movie but his ability to pull up everything that Forrest had ignored his entire life until that moment because suddenly he's not as important, it is perfect. Masterful.
So many incredible scenes and moments in this movie: Bubba by the river, Lt. Dan when he shows up on the dock, Lt. Dan when he shows up at the wedding, and as you noted, when Forest's voice cracks when he asks if "little Forest" is smart. Every one of those is just a gut punch, and some amazing moments that just touch your soul.
Jenny was Robin Wright. Mom was Sally Fields. Lt Dan was Gary Sinise. Forrest Gump Jr was Haley Joel Osment. Bubba was Mykelti. They each have done some great movies.
This movie was like a box of chocolates in more ways than not knowing what we would get. It's got variety, it's got a lot going on, it's awesome, it makes you feel good, and it can make you cry at times.
It took me a good 3 or 4 viewings to notice that lieutenant Dan was standing behind the seats at their wedding because he spent so much time sitting that he just wanted to stand whenever he could. ♥
You asked why Jenny didn't tell Forrest about little Forrest. It is possible she tried, but, Forrest was running for over 3 yrs and could not be gotten a hold of to tell him. Great reaction to a great movie.
The feather in the start at the end is quite a nice touch to the film. It actually represents Forrest being free, carried in the wind wherever the wind takes him as how he lived his life.
I always thought the feather symbolizes life and how we choose to live it, cause when the feather randomly landed on Forrest we get to know how he chose to live his life. That's why it came to us at the end. It's like they're telling us: "That's how he lived his life. How are you planning to live yours?"

He was great in "Sleepless in Seattle," "Big," "That Thing You Do," and "You've Got Mail." In sleepless they reference a Deborah Kerr movie (B&W) "An Affair to Remember." Sandra Bullock is great in "While you were Sleeping," with Bill Pullman, from Sleepless, made around the same time.
gentle reminder that Jenny has early onset Childhood PTSD and that her behavior is how untreated childhood PTSD can affect and manifest someone as an adult. Unfortunately she grew up in a time when PTSD wasn't spoken about and certainly wasn't considered an illness that could affect children or women. Jenny's theme throughout the film is that she's unconsciously running from her abuse. Bc it plunges her mind constantly, she was always trying to numb herself to bury her trauma. But as a woman in the 70s and 80s, there was no one to explain to her what trauma even is, let alone how it affects her.

There really hasn't. Movies in the '80s and ESPECIALLY (imo at least) the '90s were just made differently. The stories were better. They just don't make Forrest Gumps, Shawshank Redemptions, or Green Miles anymore and that's such a shame.
The 90s were the best period for movies. There was a little CG in some movies, but it wasn't overdone and a lot of those movies age better than movies 10-20 years newer. The early 90s especially had some really underrated movies. I still watch My Girl and A League of Their Own, even though they're chick flicks. And I have a soft spot for A Goofy Movie.
Unfortunately a movie like this CAN'T be made in these days. Some people are already saying this movie SHOULDN'T have been made, because of some of the issues they touch on, without some sort of WOKE message or comment. Those people are too stupid to get the fact that by how the movie showed those issues it DID comment on it, without having to say a word about it.

Oh, you've got to watch The Green Mile with Tom Hanks .. and again with Gary Sinise (they made 3 movies together). It will shock you, surprise you, make you angry, make you tear up and eventually cry, make you cheer, and a whole lot of other emotions. It is an amazing movie. BTW, Jenny died of AIDS. The reason why Jenny kept pushing Forest away was not because she didn't love him or thought he wasn't good enough for her, but she wasn't good enough for him.
Simply one of the best reaction to this movie I've seen. I enjoyed following this story again through your eyes and feeling those same emotions I had when I first saw this in the theater.
I watch this movie nightly to help me fall asleep. When I married my wife and we got a place together, she got out her out VCR player and started playing this movie to fall asleep to. It was her go-to movie to help her go to sleep. After 10 years, we're still growing strong. It might have been different if she hated Forrest Gump. I also had the pleasure of seeing this movie in the theater in 1994. It was epic. I wish I could unsee it and have that same experience you did.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this. The opening scene was a little cringy for me, just because I was SO aware of who Tom Hanks was. But his performance was so amazing, that feeling evaporated completely within the first five minutes, and I didn't even realize it was happening. I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching people react to this. It just takes me right back. Thanks man!
He did win the Oscar that year. In fact, since he'd already won it the previous year for "Philadelphia" (another great movie) when he got out and the reporters asked him about it, he put on his best Forrest Gump accent and he said: "So they invited me to the Oscars... again... and I won the Oscar... A-GAIN!!!" LOL
Abbie Hoffman is the guy in the flag shirt. John Lemnon was shot because a guy read Catcher in the Rye and put his own meaning to it. Basically, he was a typical loner killer.

This might be the perfect movie. This movie gives you all of the emotions. From writing to directing, acting, amazing soundtrack. The soundtrack was a 2 cd set when it first came out. More Tom Hanks: Apollo 13 (which also has Gary Sinese), Castaway, The green mile, Captain Phillips, Sully
People always ask why Jenny didn't tell him sooner about Forrest Jr. Remember that he did spend over 3 years running back and forth across the country. Granted, that doesn't cover the entire time that little Forrest was around, but it does cover some of it.
I remember seeing this film for the first time in history class. It was a pioneer for digital insertion of an actor into historical footage. As always, I love your enthusiasm and genuine reaction.

Sometimes I take these films like these for granted, having grown up with them. Really enjoy rediscovering them with you man. You're right about that soundtrack; I mean I was born in '91 and still give the 60s and 70s the award for best music.
John Lennon was murdered by Mark Chapman who said that he was jealous of his fame at least that is what I remember from a documentary about Lennon many years ago.
It's a very special movie. In case you missed the ending where Forrest spoke to Jenny's grave, when he leaves, a bunch of birds take off from the tree. Remember how when she was a molested little girl she'd prayed for God to turn her into a bird. The theme kept replaying with her suicide thoughts of jumping off "can I fly away" and even the feather. The way Forrest turns and looks back and watches all the birds take off, it's obvious he's thinking it's Jenny in some form or or other. IN the books sequel, the book says Jenny died of Hepatitis C. I could care less, the MOVIE makes every effort to subtly hint that it was AIDS. Her lifestyle, the time that scene took place (early 80's) is dead right for the time Aids came onto the scene but wasn't given a firm name and VERY little known about it yet. I will die on that hill. Incidentally, while it's DEFINITELY NOT SAFE for a man to have unprotected sex with a woman with AIDS or Hep C, and those diseases ABSOLUTELY can be transmitted to him, it's not nearly AS EASILY transmitted rom woman to man through sex. From man to man, yes. Man to woman, definitely . But woman to man, not as easily transmitted, since SHE doesn't really "leave fluids" inside HIM the way a man leaves them in a woman or man in another man (depending on what they do.) Anyway, probably too much TMI. "Little Forrest" (Forrest Jr) actor was AMAZING a few years later in "The sixth Sense." definitely one to check out. It will probably blow you away. Probably considered one of the best performances by a child actor. Tom Hanks was trying to figure out how Forrest should talk (accent, style of talking) Turns out the little boy who played Forrest Sr. as a child was from Alabama (or nearby) and had never acted before. Tom Hanks spent a little time with him and decided that he was going to model his accent/speech after the young actor. So, that's really how that little boy did talk, and Tom Hanks copied it. That boy grew up to be a soldier. Don't think he actually did any real acting except this movie.
@@AwesomeUSMovies This is a sort of good explanation on what Jenny's condition might have been, but in my opinion and me personally working with the sociological and demographics study cases and historic records of the time (and working closely with epidemiologists and medical sources as collaborator) I myself have a different opinion on what Jenny's condition was, I believe in fact the author was trying to reflect the social panorama of missinformation and lack of general knowledge surrounding AIDS at the time, in fact, I read it as her having contracted HIV, developing AIDS and because of their community-environment, not being aware of it, maybe not even connecting at all this new disease with anything she had or not knowing at all of AIDS and HIV altogether. Actually in the early 80's/that point in the film's timeline Hep C was still relatively unknown and there certainly wasn't a cure. Jenny's lifestyle certainly could have caused her to contract that too.

Dan) has been very active raising money to help veterans. He has really done great work. Tom Hanks and Sally Field are simply incredible. Completely random comment here, but I just realised that watching reactions to movies is basically like being in someone's head when they read a book you recommended for the first time...
That is what I love these kind of videos. And i was young when I first saw these "big.movies" and since I can't turn back time to see these master pieces again for the fisrt time... We need these videos
I am surprised that commentors and reactors miss the whole point of the movie. The main conflict is not in the love story. The main issue being looked at is whether our lives are predestined or if we are "floating around like a feather." The question is posed as we see 4 different life tracts of this generation: military man who comes from military family legacy who becomes disabled, black man who dies in the war, hippie who wanders through life in anti-war counterculture with drugs, and the war hero. The last, Forrest, stumbles into other major, unprecedented, and profound events of that generation, both good and bad, such as ping pong ball craze, running craze, numerous assassinations, start of Apple, Nixon, hurricane Carmen, opening up with China, civil rights, etc. Were all of these events destined to occur? Is there some force pulling the strings? Could it be it was all chance/happenstance? The answer Forrest comes to (while standing at Jenny's grave) is that these events and his personal events are both chance and destiny. You can see the book author exploring his own and his generation's unusual experiences and pondering what it means by going through it with all 4 characters: Jenny, Bubba, Lt. Dan, and Forrest.

There wasn’t any therapy for little girls or boys back then. She had to deal w/that on her own. No mother, no doctors. That…that’ll mess u up for life, man.

@@AwesomeUSMovies I think many people forget that Forrest was mentally challenged. Everyone is like "Oh Jenny why don't you want to be with Forrest? He's so sweet to you!" But really, he wouldn't have been a good partner for Jenny. He would have been her lapdog, and she didn't want that. Even as a grown man, he had no idea why she hated her father. Not until probably after they were married did she get him to understand. Imagine trying to have a fulfilling relationship with someone that has the mental capacity of a 7 year old. She probably felt like she would be taking advantage of him if she married him as well. She had infinite opportunity to get money and protection from him, but she chose not to. She was messed up, and didn't think she was worthy of love in the first place either. Jenny is a fascinating character. She's truly humble and honest. But she was damaged, and couldn't accept or understand love. But she was also a fully mentally functioning person that knew she couldn't be in a real relationship with Forrest.
James, as you continue in your film journey, certain directors will become more recognizable along with the actors. In fact, film is often called a "director's medium" rather than an actor's medium. Directors often have recurring themes throughout their movies. This film was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also did the Back to the Future movies and another one that will hopefully be on your list one day, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I'd argue that his main theme is a sense of mysticism and whimsy.
He also deals a lot with themes of belonging, purpose, destiny and chance, in fact I see these as persistent themes in all of these movies, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the Back To The Future trilogy, Forest Gump and Castaway another of my favorite Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks movies of all time and one of my top movies ever…
I love this movie. Tom Hanks is such a great actor. The soundtrack was so mazing to me that I asked for it for Christmas and I wore that cassette tape out. I also love the altered history aspect of the film. Placing Forrest Gump in the middle of these major historic events was such a great idea for a film. His straight man act always makes me laugh, and I always appreciate his outlook on life and wish I could have that level of optimism.

The saddest part of this movie is that Jenny's traumatic childhood made her feel unworthy of love, not that Forrest was ever unworthy of hers.

I'd add Apollo 13 (Lt. Dan is in it, too!), and Philadelphia. For more lighthearted ones: Big, the Money Pit (my fav. comedy of his), the Burbs. Can't go wrong w/ any of his films, though!
There's always been two schools of thought for viewers as to why Jenny treated Forest the way she did. One thinks she's just a self-centered, egotistical, self-destructive witch that uses Forest when she needs him, and ditches him otherwise. The second (and group I subscribe to) is that Jenny felt SHE was the problem, that she truly wasn't worthy of the love Forest offered her, and that if she "went with it", she'd end up destroying Forest, because she can't do anything but taint and ruin everything around her. And she didn't want to ruin the one pure and good thing in her life. I always had an issue that she didn't tell Forest about his son sooner, but I bet it took her a long time to work through her issues to get to that point.
Due to the abuse from her father I'm sure she had major trust issues and possible PTSD. Throughout her life all she wanted was acceptance, and while Forrest was always there for her she had trouble with it.
I'm sure the abuse she received when young gave her some major trust issues.

Jenny's father messed her up,so she was to the one who didn't know what Love was, she had no self esteem and let men abuse her, she didn't feel worthy of Forrest, all she ever did was run away, that's why she told him to always run
But she didn't not tell him about his son, Forrest was running around the country for 3years and when he went back home she got in touch with him
The thing about not telling Forrest about his son sooner, its kind of hard to deliver news to a guy who is constantly on the move. Considering he was running across the nation basically the entire time, I can see how she couldn't reach him until he was home and got the letter.
@@tkurz3071 Yeah, but consider Forest went running right after Jenny left, and ran for 3 years, x # of months, and so many days (can't remember the exact number). Jenny had 9 months of pregnancy, then little Forest looked to be about 5 years old when he met his dad. So by my calculation, that gave Jenny at least two years to tell him. Maybe 1. But it's not like she couldn't have written him a letter to the address he had lived his whole life in Greenbow, Alabama, and he'd have gotten it when he got back.
There are a number of must see performances by Tom Hanks. "Saving Private Ryan", "The Green Mile", "Cast Away", and "Apollo 13" are all incredible.

In the book that's the sequel to Forrest Gump, Gump and Co., author Winston Groom reveals that Jenny died of hepatitis C. That strain was discovered in 1989 so it fits the timeline.

At the time of the movies release HIV had recently been discovered to be passed by sharing needles. So because the movie didn't say most people thought she had contracted HIV from her years of drug use and unprotected sex. But the books say it was a new form of hepatitis

But it's my understand that the movie is an adaptation of the book meaning they may have changed a number of things. So in the movie universe its definitely implied its aids, so you right, but maybe some events are different enough that Hep C made more since. In the book

The actor who played Lt. Dan formed a band and plays for service men. He has build houses for Veterans and is heavily involved in helping them out whichever way he can. He, in my opinion is a real true hero for that
Someone probably already mentioned it, but in the book Jenny had hepatitis. I don't remember if it was B or C....but one of them.
It was wonderful to see a reaction of someone who got all the references. Very few channels catch the significance of Forrest staying at the Watergate or the "Have a Nice Day" smiley face. Also, Jenny gets blasted by a lot of people as they think she strung Forrest on or used him. But she always told him to leave her be and pushed him away. He was just too sweet to give up on her.
I love the symbols in the movie. For Jenny, it's birds. Young Jenny and Forrest pray in the field for her to "turn into a bird and fly far, far away". Later Jenny remembers that and stands on the bridge, scaring Forrest. Further on in the story she stands on the edge of the balcony as if she might be thinking about turning into that bird again. In the end, as Forrest leaves the cemetery a flock of birds fly up. And finally, the feather falls out of the book as little Forrest
In the beginning it's a bird feather that floats down and Forrest puts it in the book. From that time forward we are included in Forrest's story. Forrest asks his mom what his destiny is and she tells him she believes "we make our own destiny." But Forrest seems to stumble into luck. He gets chased across a field and ends up playing football. At graduation a recruiter asks if he's thought about his future and he goes into the Army. He asks a soldier what that little white ball and paddle are for and becomes a ping-pong master which gets him the money to buy his boat. A hurricane destroys all the boats but Forrest's.......and more. Is he just lucky? Or did he make his own luck by being ready for those challenges? Later at Jenny's grave Forrest tells Jenny "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze. But, I think, maybe it's both." And finally, the feather falls out of the book as little Forrest is getting on the bus, and it floats away.......and so do we, accidental-like.....on a breeze.

I don't even like this movie but his ability to pull up everything that Forrest had ignored his entire life until that moment because suddenly he's not as important, it is perfect. Masterful.

So many incredible scenes and moments in this movie: Bubba by the river, Lt. Dan when he shows up on the dock, Lt. Dan when he shows up at the wedding, and as you noted, when Forest's voice cracks when he asks if "little Forest" is smart. Every one of those is just a gut punch, and some amazing moments that just touch your soul.

This movie was like a box of chocolates in more ways than not knowing what we would get. It's got variety, it's got a lot going on, it's awesome, it makes you feel good, and it can make you cry at times.

The feather in the start at the end is quite a nice touch to the film. It actually represents Forrest being free, carried in the wind wherever the wind takes him as how he lived his life.

I always thought the feather symbolizes life and how we choose to live it, cause when the feather randomly landed on Forrest we get to know how he chose to live his life. That's why it came to us at the end. It's like they're telling us: "That's how he lived his life. How are you planning to live yours?"

He was great in "Sleepless in Seattle," "Big," "That Thing You Do," and "You've Got Mail." In sleepless they reference a Deborah Kerr movie (B&W) "An Affair to Remember." Sandra Bullock is great in "While you were Sleeping," with Bill Pullman, from Sleepless, made around the same time.

Glad I'm not the only one
gentle reminder that Jenny has early onset Childhood PTSD and that her behavior is how untreated childhood PTSD can affect and manifest someone as an adult. Unfortunately she grew up in a time when PTSD wasn't spoken about and certainly wasn't considered an illness that could affect children or women. Jenny's theme throughout the film is that she's unconsciously running from her abuse. Bc it plunges her mind constantly, she was always trying to numb herself to bury her trauma. But as a woman in the 70s and 80s, there was no one to explain to her what trauma even is, let alone how it affects her.

There really hasn't. Movies in the '80s and ESPECIALLY (imo at least) the '90s were just made differently. The stories were better. They just don't make Forrest Gumps, Shawshank Redemptions, or Green Miles anymore and that's such a shame.
The 90s were the best period for movies. There was a little CG in some movies, but it wasn't overdone and a lot of those movies age better than movies 10-20 years newer. The early 90s especially had some really underrated movies. I still watch My Girl and A League of Their Own, even though they're chick flicks. And I have a soft spot for A Goofy Movie.
Unfortunately a movie like this CAN'T be made in these days. Some people are already saying this movie SHOULDN'T have been made, because of some of the issues they touch on, without some sort of WOKE message or comment.
Those people are too stupid to get the fact that by how the movie showed those issues it DID comment on it, without having to say a word about it.

Oh, you've got to watch The Green Mile with Tom Hanks .. and again with Gary Sinise (they made 3 movies together). It will shock you, surprise you, make you angry, make you tear up and eventually cry, make you cheer, and a whole lot of other emotions. It is an amazing movie. BTW, Jenny died of AIDS. The reason why Jenny kept pushing Forest away was not because she didn't love him or thought he wasn't good enough for her, but she wasn't good enough for him.

I watch this movie nightly to help me fall asleep. When I married my wife and we got a place together, she got out her out VCR player and started playing this movie to fall asleep to. It was her go-to movie to help her go to sleep. After 10 years, we're still growing strong. It might have been different if she hated Forrest Gump.
I also had the pleasure of seeing this movie in the theater in 1994. It was epic. I wish I could unsee it and have that same experience you did.

I'll never forget the first time I saw this. The opening scene was a little cringy for me, just because I was SO aware of who Tom Hanks was. But his performance was so amazing, that feeling evaporated completely within the first five minutes, and I didn't even realize it was happening. I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching people react to this. It just takes me right back. Thanks man!

In fact, since he'd already won it the previous year for "Philadelphia" (another great movie) when he got out and the reporters asked him about it, he put on his best Forrest Gump accent and he said: "So they invited me to the Oscars... again... and I won the Oscar... Sometimes I take these films like these for granted, having grown up with them. Really enjoy rediscovering them with you man. You're right about that soundtrack; I mean I was born in '91 and still give the 60s and 70s the award for best music.

It's a very special movie. In case you missed the ending where Forrest spoke to Jenny's grave, when he leaves, a bunch of birds take off from the tree. Remember how when she was a molested little girl she'd prayed for God to turn her into a bird. The theme kept replaying with her suicide thoughts of jumping off "can I fly away" and even the feather. The way Forrest turns and looks back and watches all the birds take off, it's obvious he's thinking it's Jenny in some form or or other.
IN the books sequel, the book says Jenny died of Hepatitis C. I could care less, the MOVIE makes every effort to subtly hint that it was AIDS. Her lifestyle, the time that scene took place (early 80's) is dead right for the time Aids came onto the scene but wasn't given a firm name and VERY little known about it yet.

Incidentally, while it's DEFINITELY NOT SAFE for a man to have unprotected sex with a woman with AIDS or Hep C, and those diseases ABSOLUTELY can be transmitted to him, it's not nearly AS EASILY transmitted rom woman to man through sex. From man to man, yes. Man to woman, definitely . But woman to man, not as easily transmitted, since SHE doesn't really "leave fluids" inside HIM the way a man leaves them in a woman or man in another man (depending on what they do.) Anyway, probably too much TMI.
"Little Forrest" (Forrest Jr) actor was AMAZING a few years later in "The sixth Sense." definitely one to check out. It will probably blow you away. Probably considered one of the best performances by a child actor.
Tom Hanks was trying to figure out how Forrest should talk (accent, style of talking) Turns out the little boy who played Forrest Sr. as a child was from Alabama (or nearby) and had never acted before. Tom Hanks spent a little time with him and decided that he was going to model his accent/speech after the young actor. So, that's really how that little boy did talk, and Tom Hanks copied it. That boy grew up to be a soldier. Don't think he actually did any real acting except this movie.

@@AwesomeUSMovies This is a sort of good explanation on what Jenny's condition might have been, but in my opinion and me personally working with the sociological and demographics study cases and historic records of the time (and working closely with epidemiologists and medical sources as collaborator) I myself have a different opinion on what Jenny's condition was, I believe in fact the author was trying to reflect the social panorama of missinformation and lack of general knowledge surrounding AIDS at the time, in fact, I read it as her having contracted HIV, developing AIDS and because of their community-environment, not being aware of it, maybe not even connecting at all this new disease with anything she had or not knowing at all of AIDS and HIV altogether.

Actually in the early 80's/that point in the film's timeline Hep C was still relatively unknown and there certainly wasn't a cure. Jenny's lifestyle certainly could have caused her to contract that too.
Tom hanks got his characters manurisms and dialect from the little boy who played younger forest, he just mimicked him.

I am surprised that commentors and reactors miss the whole point of the movie. The main conflict is not in the love story. The main issue being looked at is whether our lives are predestined or if we are "floating around like a feather."
The question is posed as we see 4 different life tracts of this generation: military man who comes from military family legacy who becomes disabled, black man who dies in the war, hippie who wanders through life in anti-war counterculture with drugs, and the war hero. The last, Forrest, stumbles into other major, unprecedented, and profound events of that generation, both good and bad, such as ping pong ball craze, running craze, numerous assassinations, start of Apple, Nixon, hurricane Carmen, opening up with China, civil rights, etc.
Were all of these events destined to occur? Is there some force pulling the strings? Could it be it was all chance/happenstance? The answer Forrest comes to (while standing at Jenny's grave) is that these events and his personal events are both chance and destiny.
You can see the book author exploring his own and his generation's unusual experiences and pondering what it means by going through it with all 4 characters: Jenny, Bubba, Lt. Dan, and Forrest.

In the book, Jenny was an only child. I never understood this storyline. She didn't have sisters.
Forrest Gump is just such an incredible piece of fiction in itself. It’s such a quirky but profound parable.

Great reaction, James! Forrest Gump is my favorite movie, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.😉 Btw, keep in mind Jenny was sexually abused by her father. THAT’S why she was the way she was. There wasn’t any therapy for little girls or boys back then. She had to deal w/that on her own. No mother, no doctors. That…that’ll mess u up for life, man.
And she lived at a time that it was kept a secret due to the shame.

She didn't tell him about their child for a few reasons, but primarily: He was running across the country with no possible way to reach him.

@@AwesomeUSMovies I think many people forget that Forrest was mentally challenged. Everyone is like "Oh Jenny why don't you want to be with Forrest? He's so sweet to you!" But really, he wouldn't have been a good partner for Jenny. He would have been her lapdog, and she didn't want that. Even as a grown man, he had no idea why she hated her father. Not until probably after they were married did she get him to understand. Imagine trying to have a fulfilling relationship with someone that has the mental capacity of a 7 year old. She probably felt like she would be taking advantage of him if she married him as well. She had infinite opportunity to get money and protection from him, but she chose not to. She was messed up, and didn't think she was worthy of love in the first place either. Jenny is a fascinating character. She's truly humble and honest. But she was damaged, and couldn't accept or understand love. But she was also a fully mentally functioning person that knew she couldn't be in a real relationship with Forrest.
James, as you continue in your film journey, certain directors will become more recognizable along with the actors. In fact, film is often called a "director's medium" rather than an actor's medium. Directors often have recurring themes throughout their movies.
This film was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also did the Back to the Future movies and another one that will hopefully be on your list one day, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I'd argue that his main theme is a sense of mysticism and whimsy.

He also deals a lot with themes of belonging, purpose, destiny and chance, in fact I see these as persistent themes in all of these movies, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the Back To The Future trilogy, Forest Gump and Castaway another of my favorite Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks movies of all time and one of my top movies ever…

I love this movie. Tom Hanks is such a great actor. The soundtrack was so mazing to me that I asked for it for Christmas and I wore that cassette tape out. I also love the altered history aspect of the film. Placing Forrest Gump in the middle of these major historic events was such a great idea for a film. His straight man act always makes me laugh, and I always appreciate his outlook on life and wish I could have that level of optimism.
