💯 facts! I was born in the 80's so I'm a 90's kid. The 90's had the best movies, video games and music. There was enough technology to have fun but not enough to destroy us. The cost of living was affordable and people weren't fighting over politics. The 90's is the best decade in history. The 90's became awsome because the people rebelled about all of the nonsense that was going on in the 80's. Everything was about being a goody goody in the 80's so people exploded throughout the 90's which gave us dark awesome movies and music like pulp fiction and nirvana. 90's movies had a dark, mysterious, magical feeling to them that just doesn't exist anymore. Even Disney kids movies were better in the 90's!! Everything was better!!!
My father always said "if anyone ever tells you about the Good old Days. Tell'm I was there it wasn't so good. Things are better. We don't appreciate what we have.
Both of these men grew up in homes that wouldn't need to lock their doors. It was an era when innocence was allowed to be innocent. The front half of Lowe's late 1970's.
Things actually were better in the old day's though. I was born in the 80's so I'm a 90's kid. I promise you that the 90's was better than 2024 in nearly every way. The country did get worse over the past 20 years.
@jl696 Inflation and interest rates are through the roof. People are ruined now because of social media and romantic relationships are difficult to find. Movies and television have been destroyed because the studios focus more on ideology than the art and story. The music is worse than ever. Basically everything is worse right now. Gen Z has basically been destroyed. Just imagine being gen z growing up with Disney star wars and the rings of power 😳. We had George Lucas star wars and the original lord of the rings. They have no one respectable to look up to in their movies. It's honestly sad 😔..
Just listened to the full podcast. Great questions by Mr.Lowe and how I wished he would have gotten to them all. Dan hooks you in as he always does. :D Great pod!
Dan Carlin is a national treasure. He's 100% right, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the grass is greener on the other side, and it depends on the context the time, who you are, where you are, what status you have etc. These answers can't be answered because it depends on so many factors.
Yes! I love it when Conan starts talking history. He briefly had a show called Serious Jibber Jabber that would have authors as guests. Most of them were historical in nature it seemed. It was great.
Yeah, just saw an episode of Maioranus YT channel stating the same, in some areas the retraction of the empire was terrible (Britain), in others so so, and others still even improved (also because there were more resources not spent in far away areas of the empire) and there is legal documentation proving in some areas laws were changed because the administrators didn't have the means to maintain the infrastructure like baths or aqueducts.
Yeah, the Ostrogoths were better rulers than most late Roman Empire rulers. However, they don't compare favorably to the Republican rulers before the Punic War and the Western Empire rule under the "5 Good Emperors".
But anyone who knows history knows comparing modern America to the fall of Western Rome is pretty wrong headed. We have problems. Some of those problems if not solved could fester into societal rot. But America is still at or near the height of our power. Economically, militarily, technologically, and culturally no other nation is as preeminent.
It is important to note those who invaded the Western empire were current or ex Roman auxiliaries called foederati. Rome fell to unpaid Roman soldiers, not savage barbarians. Best part, they were paid in food not coin. No excuse for the Romans
The last bit of conversation about the 50s and 60s really makes you think about today and maybe there is more reason to be hopeful than we may think. It really does not feel like that. With the upcoming election bullshirt, stagnant wages and growing expenses, and not feeling like there has been much progress on getting people to pull in the same direction to prevent the worst of climate change. I don't feel a lot of hope.
Thats the point, we do not know if something is a downward turn to a big upswing or if its a crash. We can try and predict, but we have such a narrow scope individually that its impossible to be accurate. When the predictions are negative en masse, then the economy goes south, even when the objective truth would be positive.
The 1990’s was the best decade. We were never more free, we had cell phones and internet like today. But also remembered the time before personal electronics. At the same time, it’s the decade that society started to unravel, even though The Wall had just fallen.
As an African American, I have no desire to live in the past. However, I would love to observe the past. I would love to observe ancient Kush during the meroitic period or Mansa Musa's two-year pilgrimage to mecca
This captures the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind to the day before 9/11 and that’s perfect. You also just made me realize that there was less time between those two events than between 9/11 and today. And that makes me feel really old.
There's nothing quite like someone trying to get Dan to agree to their really simple narrative interpretation of history and watching Dan get to completely tear it apart. 😂
9:25 Film TV 101 This is called "crossing the axis" and is considered a boo boo. If Rob were a car he would suddenly be going in the opposite direction. If he were onstage we would be jumping from the audience to upstage of him. If you found the moment jarring that's why, if you didn't, please comment because perceptions evolve and I'm interested if the kids find it as "wrong' as I do.
The best time period to me is the 90's.. We had enough technology during that decade to have a good time but not enough to destroy us. The best video games and movies came from the 90's and a majority of the modern music that people are listening to today originally comes from that decade. The 80's didn't have good gaming consoles and it was one of the worst decades in history for music and movies. 2000-2010 was the last decent decade although it wasn't anywhere near as good as the 90's. I honestly don't think we'll ever see a good decade again in our lifetimes. I kind of feel sorry for gen z become they've never experienced an awesome decade.
The music largely sucked, I remember lamenting how boring the "Grunge" and "Nu-Metal" scenes were. The 90s was the only time in Rock, at least, that the music declined. From the 50s to the 80s, the musicians and audience were both great and got better. Then the insecure 90s "Flannel Monkeys" crawled out of their Starbucks. The great Cobain-con of mediocrity-worship and bland music convinced the world that everyone had to be "in" on something all the time. They weakened Rock enough and cleared the way for Fred Durst and a whole new Pop explosion of Divas and Boy Bands. It like 14 years for music on Rock radio to re-learn how to play awesome things and realize how fake "Grunge" actually was. Luckily the Underground music was still alive and the video games of the 90s still had the creative spirit intact.
So, Nero had this guy. His deluxe gourmand. Arbiter of taster and elegance. Gaius Petronius Arbiter. There's so many interesting Petronii. I say unprompted to no one in particular.
Turns out the real world is more complex and nuanced than the basic soundbyte Rob was trying so hard to get. To his credit, though, he rolled with it. Some hosts would be shouting down the very guests whose expertise they were ostensibly seeking out when that guest didn’t fall in line with what they wanted to hear.
@@jonbarron8049 Hardly. Things were better for most people back then. You can gaslight yourself about it all day if you choose but most people know better having lived in different eras.
America has a much more dynamic self correction mechanism. Will that allow it to survive? I don't know. But as far as "great civilizations" go, it's unique.
After the fall of Constantinople, the Ottoman Emperors legitimized their claim to that area by crowning themselves Kaiser and marrying their children to survivors of Constantine's family, so there is a minor claim to be made the Roman Empire didn't fall, it was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire and didn't fall until 1922.
It's foolish to think we are in the midst of a collapse. We are the world's largest most advanced economic and military power. We produce more oil and gas than any other nation. Our culture, movies, music, sports, television, etc. pervade the entire world. Our technological innovations continue to lead the world. Of our many close allies around the world, 6 of them are among the 10 largest economies (Japan, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Canada). Of course we have our issues, but we are still at the height of power. People forget that nations last a long time. England has been around for roughly 1000 years. Hellenistic/Roman culture lasted over 2000 years until the fall of Constantinople. America may last another thousand years. But it doesn't mean all those years will be tidy. Great societies all have messy periods. Ours isn't even all that messy. We're just addicted to social media doom and gloom.
I want recent too because I want indoor plumbing, vaccines, refrigeration, electricity in general (even the greatest Roman emperor couldn't flip a switch in the kitchen to make himself a sandwich). So when you add all that up, you end up with something pretty recent.
Failure to pay soldiers in the Roman Legion would've been a good sign of collapse. Countries are only as strong as their military's are. Military might is what props up a country and gives it credibility...IMO.
