The capital was moved to Constantinople because it was in a more strategic location. Militarily it had a natural sea barrier which prevented it from getting invaded on multiple occasions. And it was a better place economically and administratively in running the empire. In addition, Rome was still recognised as the spiritual capital of the Empire and remained significant until its fall.

@@keydaaq1805 Constantine located the capital of the unified Roman Empire on the site of old Byzantium. There were several reasons for his choice, both practical and symbolic. Firstly, Byzantium was closer to the center of the empire making control easier. Rome had become a periphery and Diocletian’s choice of Nicomedia in the east was difficult to defend.

As a Spaniard I can give a little insight into this topic, although I'm in no way an historian. About "ALL" the gold: The mining methods during the time Spain controlled the American colonies were EXTREMELLY primitive compared to what we have now. I don't remember the number but there was some comparison that went something like "the equivalent of all the gold and silver that Spain took from the americas is mined in just 2 years nowadays". Its probably more or less time but it was something like that, just to give context to how slow and basic surface mining was at the time, without any of the advanced machinery of nowadays. Also it is true that the gold and silver was spent and left spain almost as soon as it got in, but inflation also plays a part, as Spain was bringing so much new silver to Europe that the value went down. Spanish coinage was so universal that they were found almost annywhere in the globe and were the de-facto global currency, to the point that USA used Spanish coinage for many decades after independence, and pegged the dollar value to the "Spanish dollar" for many years.
Castile spent most of that gold on wars, and their military was unbeatable for a hundred years. They Owned modern day spain, south italy, including scicily and the islands between. Holland, most of south and central america, and at one point they (or the Habsburg family who Ruled spain) were the Emperor of the Holy Roman empire with Austria, hungary, Bohemia and various lands in Germany and parts of Northern italy in their direct control. They were the superpower of their day.
@So Woke Spaniards are White Europeans..... nice try troll... Most Western Europeans identify as White/Anglo/Caucasian and they push Christian ideology onto minority/ colored groups. But please continue to push the narrative that colonizers are not predominantly white, having benefited from a system their ancestors established through force.
@HHHearn worse is that he said that the Romans moved it to an entirely different country, like America moving it to Canada. When Constantinople had been part of the Roman Empire for 300 years when it first became a capital.
@HHHearn true. Asia is everything from turkey to Japan. But lands east of Persia were mostly unknown. The asia they knew or understood was rather limited
The Romans have all the reasons to be confident. 2000 years of continuous ruling over a sizeable portion of the world can give to you that kind of confidence. And moving the capital to Constantinople was correct. Hence why the empire still lasted for centuries there while the western empire fell.
Isn't it interesting how rabid atheists claim the Catholic Church led the West into the Dark Ages, while actual history shows the West was slowly crumbl9ng for centuries. If anything, the Church kept the West going. I'm a total agnostoc btw, just in case you think I'm defending Christianity in any way. I'm not. I'm just interested in the facts as I can get them. I try not to take sides anymore if I can help it.
@@connorgrimshaw5457 it's a stretch tbh. i know it's also known as the eastern roman empire, but they spoke greek and didn't even control rome. also around 700 AD the byzantines lost most of their territory, so there goes the "sizeable portion of the world" part. greece (and sometimes anatolia) is not exactly a huge empire.
@@connorgrimshaw5457 but the Byzantine empire is different than the Roman Republic turned Roman Empire. Different traditions, military and political structure. The Roman Empire is generally considered by most historians to have fallen in 476 AD when Odoacer sinks his sword into the throne of the Roman emperor and declares himself King of Italy. The Byzantines were a surviving offshoot of Rome but they were far from Roman in anything other than name only. Completely different culture, political influences, different societal norms. That would be like saying Alexander’s empire lasted 300+ years because the Seleucid Empire and ptolomeic kingdom lasted til 63 BC and 30 BC. In reality, Alexander’s empire was split up by 321 BC, 2 years after his death.
3:02. A number of Roman writers understood very well the revolution of empires. An extract from Seneca, the Roman philosopher: “Ancient empires have fallen when in the very heyday of their power. The number cannot be reckoned of the kingdoms that have been overthrown by other kingdoms. God now makes it His special aim to exalt some and to overthrow others; nor does He let them gently down, but dashes them from their pinnacle, so that no remnant of them is left.” (Natural Questions. 3.8-9)

I read a statistic that claimed that Spain mined from its colonies in 3 centuries almost the same amount of gold that nowadays Peru mines in a single year, so they didn't take all the gold from America. Most of that gold was spent on wars in central Europe (which was part of its empire) to fight Protestantism. Another great part of its gold was spent battling separatist revolutions in America and Asia, as well as fighting against the US in Cuba and the Philippines. The Royal Navy did little harm to the Spanish Armada, most of the Armada's ships were sunk by bad weather. It was most probably the other way round, a Spanish commander, Blas de Lezo, literally single-handly (he only had one arm, and also missed a leg and an eye) defeated a whole British fleet at Cartagena de Indias. The biggest threat to Spain from Britain was the British Freemasonry, which conspired with separatists to spark revolutions in the Spanish colonies (i.e. Simón Bolívar, the idol of the Marxist Southamerican dictators, was their useful idiot). The little gold that remained was lost in the Spanish 1936 Civil War when the Communist Revolutionist Government stole all the national reserves before retreating from the capital, Madrid. The commies gave all the gold to their sponsor, the Soviet Union, but they surely pocketed some of it themselves because they lived some pretty fancy lives in exile.
@@yourepathetic6706 what was the joke? That he said he likes history but doesn’t tell it. Where’s all the gold? It’s simple it was used by everyone. In regards to Spain you totally didn’t even mention Portugal which was forced out the moors and became a sovereign nation and huge empire themselves, in fact Spain had to steal some of Portugal’s sailors because they were superior to the Spanish (Columbus was first employed by the Portuguese, also Fernando Magalhães aka Ferdinand Magellan was Portuguese and sailed for Spain. Also the Arabs didn’t just colonize Morocco they colonized all of Northern Africa and many countries in the Middle East that prior to Arab arrival were not Islamic nations
Even Sicily and Anatolia. Even Syria and the Levant in general were neither Muslim or Arab until Arab invasions. Nevermind the legacy of the hundreds of years of the Mediterranian/Barbary slave trade that wasn't stopped until Jefferson stepped in.
He should definitely have Tom Holland (the author and historian) on the show to talk about early Christianity and the Roman world. Super fascinating stuff! And since Joe likes discussing different faith issues, I'd love to see some proper Christian thinkers on the show. Philosophers, historians, or scientists perhaps? For different perspectives. Like William Lane Craig or N.T. Wright or Francis Collins. Would love to see Joe extend the faith discussions with people who are leaders in their areas.
The extent that the Byzantine Christian Empire was destroyed by the Islamic expansion is largely overlooked in the modern European view of history. The battle of Tours was in Northern France. That's how far the Moors advanced into Europe. Columbus was looking for alternate trade routes that bypassed the Arab stranglehold that they held on the existing trade routes.

The thing is you can take that Jordan Peterson excavation of meaning and do it for every mythology or fairy tale. He even does it himself with Harry Potter and Pinocchio. It’s just that some people think the characters in the Bible were real
Emperor Constantine was one of 3 emperors in a empire divided into 3. Also Constantinople was a more geopolitical important location than Rome at that time.

Spain didn't take "all the gold," spend it on a navy and get defeated by the British. Spain used its wealth on its empire. See "The Spanish Empire and its Legacy: Fiscal re-distribution...in Spanish America" by Grafe and Irigoin. It built universities and hospitals throughout America, and cities like Mexico city and Lima were richer than cities in Spain during the empire (which lasted 350 years and defeated the British plenty of times). Thank you for bringing up this concept of the black legend. I had no idea what that was when you mentioned it. I now know that there are multiple black legends that include many now faded civilizations and empires. It looks like Spain's legend was exacerbated by the invention of the printing press that allowed anti Spanish propaganda to proliferate and stick around.

The capital of Rome was moved to Constantinople (Istanbul) since it was much wealthier at that time. If you look on the map it was the land bridge between Asia and Europe. Centuries before it was given to Marc Anthony to rule during the second triumvirate which included himself, Caesar Augustus who held Spain and Gaul, and Marcus Lepidus who held onto Northern Africa. All three collectively ruling over Italy/Rome. Augustus and Agrippa quickly dispatched Lepidus and took over control of his area. Leaving Marc Anthony in the East drinking and boning his life away with Cleopatra until they both died. Augustus ruling the entirety of the Roman Empire from there on. Anatolia, before the Islamic invasions, was ethnically and culturally tied to Greece since classical antiquity. Moving the Roman capital from Rome to Constantinople isn't as far fetched as you'd think. The American equivalent would be like swapping Washington for Pittsburgh.
Constantine didn't move the capitol, he made a second capitol in the east that would control the more wealthy and thriving eastern side of the empire and a place from which to defend against the regular attacks from the east. It didn't become "the" capitol of the Roman empire until Rome split into two empires and the western empire fell.
He does realise that the Roman Empire was in essence divided into two sections as it was to large to govern, you had western Roman Empire with Rome as the capital and eastern rome or also known as the Byzantine Greek empire which had Constantinople as its capital. Western being catholic and eastern being orthodox. This guy is the epitome of knowing a little about a lot but talking as though he knows alot about alot
It's actually incredible how wrong you are in your very confident assertions, and it's funny because you say that this guy knows very little about what he's talking about, but look at yourself before you start judging others. First of all, Rome was never the capital in the Western Roman Empire, the capital of West Rome was Ravenna, not Rome itself. Secondly, you say that West Rome was "catholic" and East Rome was "orthodox", when in reality there was no such thing as Catholic Christianity or Orthodox Christianity back when the Western Roman Empire actually existed. The great Schism happened over 500 years after Western Rome fell, both East Rome and West Rome followed the same Christianity before West Rome fell (Nicene/Chalcedonian). West Rome was never Catholic, and East Rome was not Orthodox when both Empires existed.

Actually giving money to the Church as an act of charity is explicitly sanctioned in Acts 5 and the concept itself is sanctioned by ancient tithing standards of the Israelites.
It was specifically indulgences that Luther had a problem with or the teaching that paying the church merited favor with God and saved ones (or a loved ones) soul. Luther saw this as contradicting the Bible’s teaching on being saved by grace alone through faith in Christ alone.

I think one thing we tend to forget when referring to empires falling and how common it is in the grand scheme of things is that, the difference now than from the past is how connected the internet has made the world. Before the world might as well be run through those whose agenda it was to make conquering a point. Now, whether you are a conquerer or not, you know the agendas of every empire. People are beginning to think for themselves. This was not possible in the past. So the future is kind of in the air as far as who maintains power and for how long. We are living in a time unlike any other time in the past. The internet and this access to information changes everything.
Unless you literally get invaded and conquered nobody is going to collapse anymore. Especially not the huge economies. They would drag everyone down with them so the world would cancel debts, etc. Culturally you can have major upheavals and enter a malaise period but things move too quickly these days for it to last as long as it might have hundreds of years ago.
People have always "thought for themselves", but for most people, the only things they ever think about are the issues in their immediate existence. Sustenance, income, employment, etc. They neither grasp nor care to discover the larger issues that face humanity as a whole. Those who will maintain power will be, just as they were in the past, those who understand and are willing to manipulate other people for their own advantage, whatever the cost may be to those whom they manipulate.
I am studying this era now. Martin Luther and Erasmus had conversations that were very interesting. He's talking about the Damascus story and how Spain formed to be tolerant of three religions. There were Jews, Arabs and Christians living side by side. They were the big example to the world for a long time. They set a standard during the Italian Renaissance and when the printing press came all of Christendom got a bible book to read. Humanity became literate and were competing immediately about who was more literate. This is when man evolved big time and we don't explore this history enough. It was just as big of a jump into evolution as I can think of. Printing Press was bigger than the computer. The English Revolution and John Milton's "The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates" is the most fascinating historical event. That is the main force of my scholarship, John Milton. The Protestant Reformation is so important to understand before you know the English Revolution. England was all Catholic until Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries. It was an administrative process that happened between 1536-1541. People should know Luther and Erasmus because we all became literate after this. That describes this time period in basic form. I loose myself for whole weekends doing this with resource materials at JSTOR.

Spain could've Reconquista'd much earlier, like when Castile first started to regain territory like Córdoba 250 years beforehand. But they left Granada because inter-Christian conflict got in the way of a unified front and they totally ignored it to the point where the Castile crown didn't even ask for reparations from Granada for raids into Castile.

Really? I don’t think so. The moors were kicked out because they had been kicked out of all of Europe centuries before, and Spain was one of the last places to have Jews still. The Italians called us “Marrani” or “Circunciso” (circumcision) for centuries, as they said that the Spanish blood was tainted with Jews and Mors blood. Even the northern countries used these terms, especially after the reformation. In the late XV century, there were around 360k Jews in Spain. Of this, about 70k we’re expulsed, the rest converted and accepted in the society. It was not a total expulsion like in England in the XIII century o in France in the XIV century. Regarding the Inquisition, there were Inquisitions all over Europe, the first one was in France against the Catars on the XIII century (1184). Why do we only know about the Spanish Inquisition? That, by the way, was the last one to be officially implemented in 1478? Plenty of historians have gone through the documentation of the Inquisitions of Spain; in total, they calculate about 2,500 to a maximum of 2,700 deaths penalties handed over by the Inquisition; this is about 7,6 per year on average (it lasted 352 years). Of this, almost half never were performed because the person already died or they were not in custody. You compare this with only the deaths to “witches” in Germany (around 25,000), and it pales in comparison. All this comes from what we refer to as the “Spanish Black Legend”.

One another fascinating aspect of Martin Luther was that the basically invented the German Language. Germany wasn't a country till 1871 so in the 1500s when he translated the Bible into German, they basically spoke nearly different languages in different parts of the first Empire (first Reich) so he has written his translation in a way that everyone from all parts of the Reich could understand it. So he created a nearly complete new language that has spread over the whole Reich and lead to that all over the German territory they spoke the same language (but of course with strong dialects, that's why Germany has such enormous different dialects that for sure sound for foreigns like a different language.)
That last bit there.. I got my grandmother with a bible verse. Grandma- "I'm going to Red Lobster, for lobster tail." Me- "thou shalt not dine on the shelled fish of the sea". Grandma- "the bible doesn't say that". Me- "yes, it does. I've read the bible, too". Grandma- "well, that was for back in the day" Me- 😂
The amount of silver and gold the Spaniards took from the New World was enormous, it completely changed the economies of Europe and created the modern age. The industrial revolution could never had happened without the monetization and modernization of the European economies that occurred after the discovery of precious metals in the Americas. So powerful were Spanish gold and silver coins in this worldwide economy, were that they only ceased to be legal tender money in the United States in 1857!
To be fair, the Spanish DID end up losing A LOT of that gold, to Piracy and Shipwrecks.. It's estimated there is more gold on the ocean floor, due to Spanish shipwrecks, that the amount of gold could transform Spain, even today.
We put them there as privateers to raid Spanish supply lines and I would also argue knowingly fired them there so they would continue raiding the high tides effectively destroying Spanish trade routes destabilising them and taking pressure off us as it wasn’t really us doing it the British empire was a master at unconventional tactics
Listening to this show on Spotify, this guy, who is generally so nice and fairly funny, renders himself unintelligible from such severe TDS and partisan blindness that his whole conversation is mostly useless. And Joe, there’s no way in hell Michael Obama would win the presidency.
Yep, I watched about a minute from his new special, same old left wing bull shit, I lost a lot of respect for him. Trump isn't off limits or anything like that, but Jesus Christ, give it a rest already..
It depends on who's running against Michelle Obama. If the other person is wholly unqualified and/or unlikeable and/or unknown, voters would take what they could get. For instance, let's say the other candidate was a confirmed ex-member of ISIS whose professional background outside of fighting the infidels included flipping burgers and selling drugs to middle-schoolers and was running on a platform of legalizing the killing of puppies for bloodsport. I think the choice would be clear.
Curious if the whole interview is worth listening to ? Jim is so woke and leftist is there any debate or uncomfortable conversations that would be worth a listen ?
Spain used to get gold out of the mountains of Utah. The natives ended up with a lot of it, and when Joseph Smith came to Utah, he ended up with a lot of it to build the mormon church. Interesting stuff..
I always had respect for Gaffigan as a comic because he's 1) funny and 2) works clean but I have a whole new level of respect for him now that he's a student of history.
I really enjoy Jim’s work. He is hilarious! That’s said, an hour into the full podcast revealed that Jim has no earthly idea of what’s really going on in US politics today… smh. His question that floored me was centered around who is worse, Antifa or “the insurrectionists”… and he was serious. And “there wasn’t a storming of the Capitol when Trump won…” did everyone forget how mobs torn up DC after Trump won?!?! Look it up. Dems torn up the town. Again SMFH. He lives in a bubble and has Don Lemon on speed dial. Ridiculous.
Why are you so convinced you’re right and he’s wrong? I think your arrogance, conceit, and closed-mindedness prevents you from learning and understanding. It should be easy to humble yourself because there is no reason at all for your intellectual conceit about politics. How many PhDs in political science do you have? How many books and articles have you published in political science? Politics is like any academic discipline-takes years of serious study to even have a basic understanding. And there’s a zero percent chance you read academic journals on politics and a 100% chance you consume mindless ideological political propaganda. The other problem is your closed-mindedness. The only way you could fathom that DC was “torn up” and it was by “dems” is due to major blinders on and artificial filtering of information in your brain where you apply ideologically driven preconceptions consequently keeping your mind imprisoned in a bubble of echo chamber and ignorance.
ironic you use the word “bubble” when all everyone around you hears is the sound of muffled rambling from your own bubble. For instance if hundreds of black people against against trump behaved the same way-broke into the White House, destroying property, death threats, revolutionary slogans, etc.- there is no doubt you would be screaming to tar and feather and hang them all from trees until you are red in the face,
So glad someone said this. It’s the only reason I even came to this video. To make sure I wasn’t the only one who was in disbelief at how in the dark Jim was on all this
Yes we were also the best at unconventional warfare which is where our brutality came from it was evil but genius from killing of native populations with infected bedsheets, forcing a drug epidemic onto China because we knew we couldn’t sustain a conflict with the rest of China indefinitely to keep Hong Kong to lighting our own ships alight and crashing them into the Spanish Armada and I would also argue we knowingly put our own privateers into the West Indies with full intentions of firing them there to force the to raid the high seas effectively destroying Spain and Frances trade routes
@@snowtfl5617 yes England did all those things. And why wouldn’t England do what it could to stomp on Spain’s toes? Spain was a mighty empire and a European bully, England was small, low Population and traditional limitations on taxation so you couldn’t just bleed the ppl dry to pay for weapons and ships. English Pirates in the Caribbean and fire ships into the armada were its way of mitigating Spain’s potential for attack

Constantine moved the capital to Byzantium because of its harbor, defensive abilities and closer proximity...really not that wild. Practical.
There was no Byzantium back then
@@keydaaq1805 Constantine located the capital of the unified Roman Empire on the site of old Byzantium. There were several reasons for his choice, both practical and symbolic. Firstly, Byzantium was closer to the center of the empire making control easier. Rome had become a periphery and Diocletian’s choice of Nicomedia in the east was difficult to defend.
@@keydaaq1805 yeah he renamed the old city afterwards

@@keydaaq1805 In 324, the ancient city of Byzantium was renamed “New Rome” and declared the new capital of the Roman Empire by Emperor Constantine the Great, after whom it was renamed, and dedicated on 11 May 330.[6] Constantinople is generally considered to be the center and the "cradle of Orthodox Christian civilization".[7][8] From the mid-5th century to the early 13th century, Constantinople was the largest and wealthiest city in Europe.[
Anymore history i can help u with lemme know lol
It's not much gold if you compare with today's methods, but in the context of that time, the amount of gold the Incas had was something extraordinary.
@Chris Cossiga Oh. That's interesting. How were the Jewish and Muslim people treated?
@Chris Cossiga what lies, for example?
@@viniciusalmeida9754 Well yeah, if you got earlier to america and have plenty of time to harvest it....
The Spanish inquisition is something I've heard about often but know hardly anything about it and what happened, I must fix this.
Don't forget The Phillipines.
Rome never fell, it was just divided. We call it Europe.

@HHHearn Asia Minor
@HHHearn worse is that he said that the Romans moved it to an entirely different country, like America moving it to Canada. When Constantinople had been part of the Roman Empire for 300 years when it first became a capital.
You would be surprised
@HHHearn what ancient ppl called Asia is what you and I would call the Middle East.
Lol 2000 years
Isn't it interesting how rabid atheists claim the Catholic Church led the West into the Dark Ages, while actual history shows the West was slowly crumbl9ng for centuries. If anything, the Church kept the West going. I'm a total agnostoc btw, just in case you think I'm defending Christianity in any way. I'm not. I'm just interested in the facts as I can get them. I try not to take sides anymore if I can help it.
@@donderstorm1845 yeah if you include the Byzantine empire it’s 2000 years which is nutty

'Spain' at the time of the Armada was ruled by a Hapsburg who didn't care about Spain. He was a dynasty man who sunk the wealth of Iberia into expanding his family's domains.
Well, many of us, with the number increasing every single day, are waking up to the fact that the bible is a nothing more than a poorly written book of fairy tales and lies, it's pure unadulterated fiction, and to figure that out all one needs is to use some common sense and logic....

Constantine also comes from a Byzantine lineage. He's not of Roman descent. The modern-day equivalent would be like if we elected a president that was from Puerto Rico and then he moved the capital to Puerto Rico.

The guest is drawing on the Black Legend.

It did the capital was moved regularly by that time
He does realise that the Roman Empire was in essence divided into two sections as it was to large to govern, you had western Roman Empire with Rome as the capital and eastern rome or also known as the Byzantine Greek empire which had Constantinople as its capital.

What an ignorant comment. The internet has just made it easier for these people to control everyone.
@@weignerleigner3037 what a troll comment. You were made to troll.

He was such a TDS whiny crybaby over the last few years, it’s tough to see him now without rolling my eyes.
how long are you gonna cry about it?

The Spanish Inquisition
@@randomuser1596 Didn't happen out of a vacuum.
World history is truly fascinating!!

@@blacksheepdog9810 like I said, I enjoy his stand up(stuff from back in the day) but other than that his personal life is all up to him lol. Especially if it’s how you describe lmaooo
So sad how we have division around houses of worship when we are all reading one book on love and kindness and service.
To be honest, squeezing years of history into a few hours is impressive alone. Schools try and do a pretty basic job at it. But to do it like you guys are explaining, wow. I'm interested to go watch some. Thank you.

I get my information from books not podcasts thanks
I do as well his podcast is more of an audiobook itself it’s easy to listen to at work
Growing up Lutheran, I learned so much about Martin Luther.
Thanks for the politically correct, infantile digest of European history and Christian philosophy, Jim.
lol
Where could I find the raw content I would love to research this ?

Ooooh, you sound smart.
And thanks for your comment. You must be so much smarter than him.
I love how they squeeze hundreds of years of history into a few hours...and its a legit history lesson
It’s actuator not
Eastern Empire lasted 897 years, the Double Wall and Sea Chains lasted until Cannons and Gunpowder broke them down.
It was so sad to see Jim get ugly political during Trump. Lost a lot of respect for him.
I hear he's covid fear monger as well.
Don't always agree with all of Joe's opinions, but damn I love watching his podcast. Wish the full episodes were still posted on youtube
No one agrees with all of anyones opinions. This was not a necessary qualifier for enjoying someone’s stuff.
they're free on the Spotify app. There aren't even that many commercials on there either.
@@SweetSpot909 Yeah, but Spotify is just voice, isn't it? You can't actually see Joe on there.
@@xzonia1 Of course you can!
@@xzonia1 no it's both. If you open the app and watch the video on your phone in full screen and then close the app and listen to audio. It will sync where you left off. The early app was not good but they've worked out most of the issues now.

So he created a nearly complete new language that has spread over the whole Reich and lead to that all over the German territory they spoke the same language (but of course with strong dialects, that's why Germany has such enormous different dialects that for sure sound for foreigns like a different language.)

the bible was already translated into german in his monastery.
Love this content. Philanthropy is an exciting topic.
Jim constantly amazes me
Jim should write cool historical facts to be put on Hot Pocket wrappers. It would seriously level up the knowledge in the nation!

No he should not, he is bad at history
Constantine wanted to start in a city with little pagan influence and it was easier to defend then Rome at that point.
That last bit there.. I got my grandmother with a bible verse.
Grandma- "I'm going to Red Lobster, for lobster tail."
Me- "thou shalt not dine on the shelled fish of the sea".
Grandma- "the bible doesn't say that".
Me- "yes, it does. I've read the bible, too".
Grandma- "well, that was for back in the day"
Me- 😂
The amount of silver and gold the Spaniards took from the New World was enormous, it completely changed the economies of Europe and created the modern age. The industrial revolution could never had happened without the monetization and modernization of the European economies that occurred after the discovery of precious metals in the Americas. So powerful were Spanish gold and silver coins in this worldwide economy, were that they only ceased to be legal tender money in the United States in 1857!
Thanks for watching, send a direct message to the above ☝☝ number for more insight, enlightenment, and mentorship...
To be fair, the Spanish DID end up losing A LOT of that gold, to Piracy and Shipwrecks.. It's estimated there is more gold on the ocean floor, due to Spanish shipwrecks, that the amount of gold could transform Spain, even today.
I heard that the amount of gold and silver back then...is the equivalent to like what they mine out now in a 2 day window.
British Crown actually employed Pirates to steal it from Spanish ships. Captain Francis Drake was one, look him up.
We put them there as privateers to raid Spanish supply lines and I would also argue knowingly fired them there so they would continue raiding the high tides effectively destroying Spanish trade routes destabilising them and taking pressure off us as it wasn’t really us doing it the British empire was a master at unconventional tactics
@@IblewuponyourfaceIII we’ve all heard of Francis Drake and queen Elizabeth’s seadogs!

As a Lutheran watching this made me realize I’ve never actually read the Bible myself only ever passages in church
@@tintinismybelgian ok, if that’s the choice then maybe. 😉. dear god i hope that’s not the choice. 🤦♂️
Curious if the whole interview is worth listening to ? Jim is so woke and leftist is there any debate or uncomfortable conversations that would be worth a listen ?
@@Remi-bt7tp the wokeness is predictable and boring, but when they’re just joking and catching up it’s funny.
With zero idea what he's on about
I love Dan Carlin. Everyone should listen to everything he does.
This feels like CLASSIC JRE from back in the day
I really enjoy Jim’s work.
For instance if hundreds of black people against against trump behaved the same way-broke into the White House, destroying property, death threats, revolutionary slogans, etc.- there is no doubt you would be screaming to tar and feather and hang them all from trees until you are red in the face,
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 I think your being deprived of oxygen in your bubble, try researching your subject.
So glad someone said this. It’s the only reason I even came to this video. To make sure I wasn’t the only one who was in disbelief at how in the dark Jim was on all this
@@23BEATNGU that’s exactly why I cam here too. My jaw dropped to the floor once he started talking politics.
Claims to "love history."
YESSS!!!! Jim Gaffigan!
Joes ignorance of the Moors and dismissing them as “evil” is very telling..
How is it telling?
3:24 it wasn’t “insane” that Constantine moved the capital. It made perfect sense on every level. Wtf????
Cry about it
Duning-kruger effect hits hard bb
British were literally amazing, they introduced industry, everyone should at least thank them for the modern civilisation
Spain was a mighty empire and a European bully, England was small, low
Population and traditional limitations on taxation so you couldn’t just bleed the ppl dry to pay for weapons and ships. English Pirates in the Caribbean and fire ships into the armada were its way of mitigating Spain’s potential for attack
@@Patrick3183 yes of course what we did was the stepping stones to pave the way for the strongest and biggest empire world has ever seen and probably will ever see as someone who is English it does give me pride how big we became and what we accomplished why acknowledging the blood we spilt and the ruthless things we did to get there but let’s be honest any empire that has changed the world significantly had to be ruthless to maintain order from the Romans to the mongals
@@snowtfl5617 yes England was sneaky and ruthless. Did you know that in the late 18th century, 83% of Englands GDP was spent on the military?
@@Patrick3183 no I didn’t but it doesn’t surprise me to maintain an empire of that size your power output has to be considerable
Random, but do you ever wonder how much of this historical review is true? I mean right now we're witnessing history being rewritten on a daily basis with current events, word definitions, daily false political claims, etc. I wonder how much we think is true from hundreds of years ago, and what *really* happened way back then. Can't wait for Elon to make a time machine so we can find out.
