  • Machining Steering Knuckles in the Automotive Industry
The steering knuckle is a key component of the vehicle suspension system, designed to link the front wheels to the steering system and to carry the brake components.
Traditionally, steering knuckles are made of nodular cast iron.
However, the recent car market tendency is towards lightweight components and new car models are supplied with aluminum made knuckles.
ISCAR offers a wide range of knuckle machining technologies according to the workpiece material, the customer’s machine type, and part holding fixtures.
Special combination tools, capable of running sequential operations without being replaced by a tool-changer, eliminate multiple tool replacement time, which also contributes to minimizing the total cycle time.
ISCAR’s special drilling, chamfering and slotting tool performs a sequence of operations for machining steering knuckles.
The small inserts, located on the drill's neck, perform chamfering and back chamfering of the drilled hole.
The MINI TANG-SLOT cutter with rigid, 4 edged tangentially clamped inserts rapidly slots the material, leaving a nice and burr free surface finish.
A straddle milling cutter, featuring TANG-MILL inserts with reinforced land for unfavorable conditions, is the ultimate machining method to machine two parallel surfaces in a single path.
Its combination with a taper drill, which has a SUMO-CHAM head on top and SUMO-MILL T290 tangentially clamped 2-edged inserts along the flutes, creates the most productive tool concept in the market for machining steering arm components.
ISCAR’s INDEX-H-REAM single blade reaming system is ideal for conical reaming.
The indexable cutting blade has 2 long cutting edges and can be adjusted to the tightest possible hole diameter tolerances within a few microns.
Carbide pads, together with a properly directed internal coolant supply, ensure excellent surface finish, high geometrical accuracy, hole roundness, and cylindricity.
A unique rough boring tool machines several diameter sizes of the main bearing bore at once.
In addition to the common peripheral positioning, the TANG-MILL inserts are placed also on the tool face.
All 8 corners of the insert can be utilized, which directly contributes to cost savings.
Main bearing bore finishing is performed by ISCAR-REAM - a high speed multi-tooth reaming system with internal coolant supply.
The tangential reamer with a 4 cutting edged insert can be adjusted to its final dimension using calibration carbide pads to provide accurate results, especially on cast iron knuckles.

Hello, I just happens to have my car's steering knuckle replace but the mechanic couldnt find the original one, but the new one seems to have a little biger drill for the the spindle ball joint so at the time to install it they had to overtighten it, but it seems that the piece bent in couple of milimeters to actually fit the spindle and bite it correctly. My question is , the material of standar construction of this kind of piece alloes for maleabilty or elastic defromation without being broken? In case the stress is excesive , shuold I look for amy initial crack that later can become longer? Or it might break in any time without any sign of cracks or something.. thanks a lot for your help? Nice channel by the way.

      Hello Jerry,
We appreciate receiving your input and thank you for your positive feedback.
Please note that ISCAR is a producer of cutting tools and not automotive parts.
You may want to check with the automotive parts supplier.
