Choosing the right steel is really important t10, L6 is the best bang for youre buck if.you want a functional battle ready sword 5-700$ folded and clay tempered and razor sharp
Unfortunately, folding doesn't benefit modern steels (common misconception) The sole purpose of folding was to remove impurities from the steel to make it much harder, now what with all our modern steel that has no impurities, you only end up removing the metal alloy from steels such as T10(tungsten) or L6(bainite) so they end up losing their unique steel alloy qualities. Furthermore, unnecessary folding also presents high risk for creating a large grain size in the metal as well as a risk for air pockets. Any of these will cause the blade to be brittle and low quality. If you see any modern steels that claim to be folded, stay away from them. Truekatana.com have a pricetag of 100+ dollars/euro/pounds for some serious quality blades. They are low price because they aren't traditionally japanese made, instead they are produced by american smiths. I can assure that the quality is just as high (if not, higher. due to modern metals etc.) as if they were made traditionally. Also with some unique and beautiful swords to boot. T10 is often regarded as the highest performance katana, While yes, they do hold among the keenest edges, you do need to treat them incredibly well with regular waxings and oil coatings because T10 is notoriously prone to corrosion. my top three are the 9260 and 5160 spring steels for superior resistance to bending, amazing shock absorption and ability to hold a keen edge, as well as higher resistance to corrosion that is only surpassed by two steels, stainless (which is pretty much useless as a practical katana) and my number 1 High Manganese steel. It's currently sweeping the market and gaining popularity among collectors. It has even better resistance to corrosion than spring steels, can hold just a razor sharp edge as any other steel, has ample resistance to bending, amazing resistance to shattering and the best part is that it's cheap. Also real L6 is super expensive, and rare to find a sword made out of it too. Sword creation using L6 is heavily HEAVILY regulated. plus it corrodes too
I agree with SHW, you will have to search for ones that you like. If it makes you feel better, I'm 66 years old and gotten a smart phone 3 years ago. I look for swords and some how I'm clear over on other sites or even more stranger...I end up on a site for women's dresses ! 😨 If you find a site that you like, write down the company's name and the sword. Then keep looking and you might come across the one you like at a cheaper price. Any sword videos you watch write down the site of the sword company etc. There are a lot of sword sites out there, don't settle unless you really like the sword. In a couple of months you will hate the sword if you settle for 2nd best choice. There also are some top quality swords out there for sale prices. I hope this helps.
Awesome thanks for the information. Can you recommend an exact katana to use but costs under $200usd? I have a WWII katana but I'd rather not use it. Thanks again. God bless

I think weight is a very personal thing one sword won’t fit all. I can’t effectively use a sword that weighs 3lb , using one hand and I’m not big and strong anyway. It’s not straight forward regarding weight though as depends where the point of balance is, if a sword is more blade front heavy it will cut better but I still couldn’t effectively make cuts with it, also as I’ve said before manufacturers weights on web sites can be very inaccurate, I bought swords that state 2lb 3oz , weighed it and it’s been 2lb 9oz ! If you can try before you buy, if not read reviews on it and even then it’s pot luck how it feels when you actually get it. Or have one made, exactly to suit you. There are a few web sites that offer the service obviously Chinese but you can still get a good one made to your own spec cheaper than you would think. Google custom katanas and see what comes up 👍
@@andyclare03 , it's a shame that there are people out there that try to make themselves look skillful and intelligent by belittling those that already are skillful and intelligent. You have a nice collection of swords, mine isn't as nice. I loved it when you said that, "if you had an expensive sword, you wouldn't be taking it out and cutting with it. 😀 ( I wouldn't either ! ) I've joked overt the years that I have 33 different weapons that I collected over the years ( I'm now 66 years old ) and if some one breaks in, they will have to wait a minute. I have to figure out what weapon I will use 😀. I'm looking forward to your other videos. And your cutting through 4 water jugs with one of the hardest cuts, that's really impressive ! 👍
@@RaoulDuke333 I think it’s down to personal choice and only a real sword expert would be able to choose between the 2, traditional katana would have been made differentially hardened with the more forgiving flexibility of the spine with a harder edge, the through hardened in theory could break easier as there’s less scope for flexibility in the steel but I have a few swords with both designs and as I’m no expert and just do a bit of backyard cutting etc I’m not really fussy as they will all do what I want , which one would I choose for the battle field ? Not sure as they can all break and get damaged at the end of the day . 👍
@ Don’t know as here in the U.K. things have changed with curved blades etc with the silly laws so we can’t get hold of many brands nowdays such as the Ronin training ones , luckily I teach martial arts so I can own things that some others can’t legally but still there’s not much choice now over here so glad I bought my swords years back .

Watch out for anything that claims to be damascus. It usually just means pattern steel, which unfortunately has a practical quality well below standard. However it looks GORGEOUS as a katana.
@@someonenotfunny9823 agreed,...I’ve heard of delaminations in the folds of the steel, I believe the man making the sword is more important than the steel used,...but I’m not a wealthy man so I can’t spend $3,000 for the “amazing super-sword”, I don’t have a personal relationship with Hatori Hanzo,...or a rich uncle who would will me his 12th century Masamune blade,...but I have been tempted buy cos like “swords of north shire” and so on but for now I’ll just be happy with my hanwie practical,.....good luck to you and God bless.

If it’s a wall hanger then matters little what it’s made of as long as visually it looks nice . Cutting wise , anything will cut soft fruits, I even use stainless swords for that sometimes but I wouldn’t try a pumpkin or even a pineapple with a ss blade if got your edge angles wrong it could shatter the blade.👍
Expat Trader 1060 is probably in my opinion the best all round sword steel to do pretty much everything but depends if the blade has been made well and has no flaws or weak points in that particular sword and you never know that , no one can untill it breaks that is 😁

Kitty mia Only Over 18s can buy a sword or any knife in the uk. There are laws regarding the sale of curved blades under 50cm and a few other rediculous pointless stupid garbage rules on sales unless the sword “has been made and forged with traditional forging methods “. Most companies get round the law by advertising their swords as being traditionally made and forged and if that’s what they have to do to sell them then so be it but to answer your question basically yes you can go out with no licenses etc as long as over 18 and buy a sword 👍😁.
Hi im a first time buyer and im looking for a sword for home defense. should I buy "1045 Fully Handmade Quality Japanese Samurai Katana Sword Dragon tuba, full tang, sharp edge, and functional 230$" or should i buy " or should i buy "Lyuesword Japanese Full Tang Ninja Sword Battle Ready 1060 Carbon Steel Ninja Sword 160$"?
Home defense ? Lol. Depending on the size of the rooms in your house I would go with a shorter blade as you may have little room for swinging anything other than a kitchen knife in your home without destroying your doors and light fittings 🤣 Seriously though, just buy whatever takes your fancy from a trusted known manufacturer and let’s hope you never have to use it to defend your home 👍😁

I have antiques (oldest over 500 years and I don't use these of course) and modern martial arts Katana's (Higher end but had some lower end earlier - hunwai and stuff) on, as I was learning some Iaido and cutting) but had one commissioned from a registered Japanese smith (family goes back generations of sword making - and I also forge and was able to score some real tamahagane so one day I hope to make my own) but it cost me in british pounds about 9000! Im a Canuck from Canada so it was almost double that for me, but I did have horimono's engraved both sides and splurged on fittings and the polish, so it can be cheaper but year......you can get a decent one for around 1000-2000 cdn dollars but to be honest, some of the one's you spoke of highly are not all that good......just sayin...there are some upper end Hunwai that are ok, but eh.....
Plus, with a differential heat treatment there is no reason to go below 1085/1075 steel, tougher, better edge and holding capability and the heat treat leaves the spine still flexible....if properly heat treated not batch like the mass produced ones.....You will see that in the higher end one's or maybe even L6 or L6/O1 for damascus (pattern welded is the true name) as you can get bainite easier in the heat treatment with martensite edge.
You know your stuff then 👍 I would love an original katana to display. still any katana is a thin piece of metal and steel is steel and if abused enough all will break no mater how good or expensive it was 😁.
Absolutely, if well made and that’s the key thing being well made. 1095 will keep a good edge but remember though a lower carbon steel is more forgiving if you mess a cut up if your not experienced. 1095 can be a little brittle, if you look at the link in these comments you will see another video I did a few weeks ago where I’m cutting water bottles that’s with a 1095 sword . 👍

@@someonenotfunny9823 the question of the metal is pretty hard to explain cause i dont know how they work when they hit a stand or harder things than paper, at least i want something that is durable. i saw videos where people can cut wood or trees without having dents or something. only thing i know is springsteels wont break as fast as 1095 or something like that but im not sure its right or not. so at least something durable and good for cutting bamboo or targets like this maybe this question helps to answer thanks alot for the good infos btw :)
@@TerrorFahrer I would recommend either of the two spring steel variants 9260 or 5160. They offer extreme shock resistance and their blades difficult to dull, chip, crack or shatter. They also have considerably higher corrosion resistance than other steels, so you don’t really need to be waxing and oiling it like you should other swords. And another bonus, is it holds a great edge too. Then my favorite is Manganese steel. A katana made from this stuff will last. It’s even more corrosion resistant than the spring steels, and holds an even better edge than spring steels for longer. If you want a ridiculously durable sword that you don’t have to sharpen nearly as much as others, or don’t have to corrosion protect it at all, this is your steel. It’s also cheap too. As are the spring steels. T10 is an honorable mention as it does hold among the more durable and keenest of edges, but the terrible corrosion resistance makes it a quite bad choice for people living in damp conditions (Uk, and other places with a lot of annual rainfall) and also humid climates (Florida, southern and Central America, Southern Asia etc.) So if you still want this steel, you will have to devote plenty of your time to regularly oiling and waxing the blade for corrosion protection, especially after it has done any cutting (due to the protection rubbing off during practical use) Cutting wet targets is also a no-no for this metal. Hope I helped with your metal questions. Anymore questions? then let me know!
Charles Bunch Yep, my favourite all round steel, has a little bit of everything you need, strength, flexibility, edge holding etc , all the harder steels people brag about being superior is partly true but always a trade off with them being more brittle and likely more to break .

No idea, t10 is a hard tool steel , Titanium is an extremely strong lightweight material even stronger than steel but not sure how it would hold up in a thin sword blade, if it would be able to flex enough no idea. Be a bloody expensive sword though 🤣🤣
wait wait wait. dont go titanium. This will break if you try to put it into a thin blade for practical use. it is however remarkably light and does not corrode.

T10 is often regarded as the highest performance katana, While yes, they do hold among the keenest edges, you do need to treat them incredibly well with regular waxings and oil coatings because T10 is notoriously prone to corrosion.
my top three are the 9260 and 5160 spring steels for superior resistance to bending, amazing shock absorption and ability to hold a keen edge, as well as higher resistance to corrosion that is only surpassed by two steels, stainless (which is pretty much useless as a practical katana) and my number 1
High Manganese steel. It's currently sweeping the market and gaining popularity among collectors. It has even better resistance to corrosion than spring steels, can hold just a razor sharp edge as any other steel, has ample resistance to bending, amazing resistance to shattering and the best part is that it's cheap.

Want a cheap, nice looking one for it on my wall, please tell me suggestions
Do a web search and read reviews that’s what I do 👍
I agree with SHW, you will have to search for ones that you like. If it makes you feel better, I'm 66 years old and gotten a smart phone 3 years ago. I look for swords and some how I'm clear over on other sites or even more stranger...I end up on a site for women's dresses ! 😨
If you find a site that you like, write down the company's name and the sword. Then keep looking and you might come across the one you like
at a cheaper price. Any sword videos you watch write down the site of the sword company
etc. There are a lot of sword sites out there, don't settle unless you really like the sword. In a couple of months you will hate the sword if you settle for 2nd best choice. There also are some top quality swords out there for sale prices. I hope this helps.

The katana I hav dis kinda heavy for me and I’m 5ft should I get a smaller one ? Or do I just need to work out 🏋️♀️ so I can spin it properly

Kitty mia Only Over 18s can buy a sword or any knife in the uk. There are laws regarding the sale of curved blades under 50cm and a few other rediculous pointless stupid garbage rules on sales unless the sword “has been made and forged with traditional forging methods “. Most companies get round the law by advertising their swords as being traditionally made and forged and if that’s what they have to do to sell them then so be it but to answer your question basically yes you can go out with no licenses etc as long as over 18 and buy a sword 👍😁.

Dragon tuba, full tang, sharp edge, and functional 230$" or should i buy " or should i buy "Lyuesword Japanese Full Tang Ninja Sword Battle Ready 1060 Carbon Steel Ninja Sword 160$"?
Home defense ? Lol. Depending on the size of the rooms in your house I would go with a shorter blade as you may have little room for swinging anything other than a kitchen knife in your home without destroying your doors and light fittings 🤣

Is a high carbon steel good?
Yes it is. The best ones are 1060 and 1090 Carbon Steel.
I’m looking to buy my first katana, Is 1095 clay tempered any good for heavy cutting ?
Absolutely, if well made and that’s the key thing being well made. 1095 will keep a good edge but remember though a lower carbon steel is more forgiving if you mess a cut up if your not experienced. 1095 can be a little brittle, if you look at the link in these comments you will see another video I did a few weeks ago where I’m cutting water bottles that’s with a 1095 sword . 👍

maybe this question helps to answer thanks alot for the good infos btw :)
@@TerrorFahrer
I would recommend either of the two spring steel variants 9260 or 5160.
T10 is an honorable mention as it does hold among the more durable and keenest of edges, but the terrible corrosion resistance makes it a quite bad choice for people living in damp conditions (Uk, and other places with a lot of annual rainfall) and also humid climates (Florida, southern and Central America, Southern Asia etc.) So if you still want this steel, you will have to devote plenty of your time to regularly oiling and waxing the blade for corrosion protection, especially after it has done any cutting (due to the protection rubbing off during practical use)
Cutting wet targets is also a no-no for this metal.
Hope I helped with your metal questions. Anymore questions? then let me know!

Is 1060 steel okay for cutting
Charles Bunch Yep, my favourite all round steel, has a little bit of everything you need, strength, flexibility, edge holding etc , all the harder steels people brag about being superior is partly true but always a trade off with them being more brittle and likely more to break .
